8:43 am
you know, you might think of video games as a way for kids to goof off and have fun. >> but at the smithsonian, they're actually works of art. our will thomas takes us to a new exhibit opening today. >> all right, prepare to travel back in time and perhaps into the future for a brand new exhibition at the smithsonian american art museum here in downtown washington. the exhibit is called the art of video games and the curator is the man of the hour, chris, good to see you my friend. >> good to see you, too. >> how many games are we talking about? >> about 85 games that spans 40 years of video gaming. >> let's take a look.
8:44 am
>> absolutely. it is in the playing of games that they become art. as you can see from the expression on the people playing the games, they're looking at it very differently, with the television or movies or books. people create video games, do they study how people play and look at the reactions? >> well, i don't know if they necessarily study it but certainly appreciate that in the playing of the game. and these people really are playing. >> there you are. >> there i am. i guess i'm doing okay. >> the exhibition allows people to be interactive and play the iconic games. >> that's correct. >> we have five games playable by the public and each of the games are iconic within the generation which they were created. >> really an evolution of many, many years. you've got pacman here and super mario brothers over here. >> that's right. >> what about this over here. we have a game called flower on the play station three. and then moving further into the space, we have a game called the mist. >> chris, would you agree, this really shows the progression of technology, the games don't
8:45 am
look like they used to when we were kids. >> exactly right. these games really did something different from their respective areas that changed the way game developers looked at games. >> and we should call this the honorary room for chris, because you own most of the games we're about to see. talk about old school. what is this? >> the atari vcs released in 1977. it was released in the 70s. why? it has a beautiful faux wood grain paneling. everything had wood grain in the 70s. >> this is a step back in time. talk about this. >> absolutely. this is quite honestly a step back in time. we're looking at the very first video game systems in american culture. >> from our vantage point, you really get an idea of the 40- year evolution this exhibition really highlights from. the x box to the atari and everything in between. one thing i have to ask you though, if you're not a gamer, is this really an exhibition you would be interested in?
8:46 am
>> i believe so. and it is because video games are such a part of american culture. and i believe that even if you didn't grow up playing games, if you have come to this exhibition, and allow yourself to really look at the messages, the poetry, the social reflection that exists in so many games, you may wind up becoming a video game fan yourself. >> your kids might be playing. your grand kids. >> and really especially if you look at some of these. show this again. >> this is really, you know, an art mania here. if you don't play the games, you certainly can see some of these images, they're incredible. >> absolutely. >> these are the stories of our lives. out of story books. out of history. out of epic conquests. out of personal discovery. all of them exist within the body of work that are video games. >> once again, if is called the art of video games. and at the smithsonian, right now. the american art smithsonian in downtown washington. how long does it run, chris? >> it will run through september 30. and then it will be traveling to 10 more museums through the end of 2015. so everyone should have a
8:47 am
chance to be able to experience it. >> taking it on the road. chris, thank you. >> thank you. >> cool stuff. >> thanks. my old atari is in the smithsonian. the latest travel show is in the area this weekend. >> holly morris is at the washington convention center, previewing the travel and adventure show going on this saturday and sunday. hey, holly. >> you know what? i love this show. you can come here, you can plan a trip, you can win a trip, or you can talk to experts about trips. people like the first lady of travel. samantha brown. the super popular host from the travel channel, going to be here this weekend. but we get to talk to you first. >> yes. >> here is the thing about this lady. she travels 220 days a year. give or take. >> yes. >> give or take a day. >> and she packs, she usually carries only a carry-on. >> yes. >> do it in a carry-on. that is obviously very important right now, because we get charged to check a bag. everyone wants to carry-on. >> what is the length of time to pack for?
8:48 am
>> anywhere past eight days, i do check, because it is a liquid thing for women. it is not a clothing thing. so i will show you how to pack a carry-on for at least seven days. eight days. >> that's impressive. >> let's get to it. >> so the number one rule of packing, all of your clothes have to get along. if they don't get along, they don't get to go on the trip with you. you have to be really stern with them. here we have a pair of black trousers, nice dark jeans and i like to choose clothing that has a little bit of spandex, so it will keep its shape and dark colors so if you get a little stain, you can wipe it off and good. all four pants match the tops, and you have eight days, with the outfits. and the key is what you want to do is upscale an outfit or make it more casual with accessories. we have accessories here. i love to bring scarves. they're wonderful. especially this on a plane, because it gets a little cold on a plane. and accessories. nice big cos tume jewelry that can upscale an outfit. number one tip to make an

outfit really pop, red lipstick. that is all the room it will take in the luggage. this is for liquids, especially me, where we have the most problem. you can see these things in the drugstore. these big toiletry kits here. this is of course tsa compliable, three and one. and look at how large these containers are. shampoo and moisturizer and that will last six months. we don't need to use this. >> i've been there. >> so this is literally the bag that i put through security. you can see the little containers. shampoo and eye cream and my makeup that is creamy and foaming face wash. you can fit so much and get scaled down things. and start to collect samples. metallics are great to bring. i love them because they are a neutral. this is going to dress up an outfit and double duty and where i put my powders for my makeup. >> this is the space they use for makeup. and pack everything and what important about packing is to get some kind of organizational tool. this is my own luggage line, and packing travel kick. i love the cube.
8:50 am
i will be able to pack all of that, put it in here, and the zipper method is going to condense everything down. i still have a lot more room. now shoes. three pairs. >> big problem with shoes. they do not fit in luggage. you got to be stern. i bring four pairs. i've got the pair i have on me. which is flats to go through security. i've got a pair of nice heels and i've got your seasonal shoes. these are wedges or boots. but the key is, make sure they're neutral so they go with everything. cream colored heels don't go with everything. bring your black. don't bring blue and green. this is the most important part, this is a lot of spaces to create. fill it in with shoes and socks and create a flat service and layer with everything. >> what do you think of a trip to ireland? >> oh, absolutely. i love ireland. a great time to go, too. >> a great time to go. because it is the day before saint patrick's day and because we have the o'neil james school of irish dancing here. with us. and the lady that leads it all
8:51 am
is lorraine. good to see you. >> thank you. it is wonderful to be here again. >> happy saint patrick's day to you. >> thank you. >> and you look great. that's green already for us. >> just something i threw on, lorraine. you know how i am. quickly, tell us about the school and what you are up to and what you got going on. >> we have so many items going on, we're at the sylvan theater tomorrow. i wanted to dance in the capital of the united states. we're going to dance a dance called saint patrick's day. to honor saint patrick. >> and that's free, right? >> anybody can go. it is at the sylvan theater. and we're there from 10:00 in the morning until around 1:00. >> and then you will be here on sunday on the global b stage, part of the travel and adventure expo and show at 1:30. >> yes. >> we're dancing here. and we're just so happy that there will be travel arrangements you can make while you're here. >> and obviously, you have been to ireland, and what would be your tip in taking a trip? >> well, i would certainly go to dublin. dublin is it. o'connell street. the pillar is not there anymore
