we all have a dream job some may be more difficult to obtain than others according to one author you can land your dream job with the right attitude and right strategy, i recently talked with pete author of i got my dream job and so can you seven steps creating your ideal career after college he has practical advice to help at any career stage. >> let's talk about you and your start because you did get
9:13 am
what you considers a dream job very early with the washington wizards tell us about that >> id did the over -- i did the overall message of the book is anyone can get their dream job you don't need to get lucky don't need to go to an ivy league college i am proof you don't need to be the most talented or experienced person i got my dream job working in the front office of the washington wizards out of college, i was 21 years old and didn't even know how to knot my own tie if i can make it happen anyone else can as well >> there is a story involved how did you make that happen. >> if i could give job seekers one tip stop looking for jobs and look for people. over 70% of all jobs are filled behind the scenes through personal contactnetworking the only way you will learn about most opportunities out there, and the only way you will stand out from everybody else trying to get a job is if you stop looking for jobs and spend your time getting in front of the right people with the power to hire you.
9:14 am
>> that sounds easy but it can you know take some skill sets to be able to do that and handle yourself the right way when you are in front of those people. >> absolutely so i give people a few quick tips in terms of how to approach networking the first tip utilize your existing network most job seekers completely under estimate who they know or have access to. if you know 100 people right now and those people know 100 people that you don't know, you are an introduction away from 10,000 people and you have no idea who those people can be you need to start with the people you already know or have access to first >> i want to show tips you have the subtitle of the book 7 steps to creating your local career after college we have six tips you have in the book a variety of tips and then the second in the book is what. >> be professional the overall message getting your dream job is not the final destination, after you get your dream job your goal shouldn't be to keep it it should be, to be your best you need to have certain
9:15 am
steps you take to make sure you are your best when you get hired. >> tell me let me read something here there is a lot of great stuff in the book one thing that jumped out at me, do you know how the ask for directions and you paint a great picture here excuse me i am lost would you mind giving me some directions sure where are you trying to go well, i am flexible i will go any where where do you think i should go that is an example how a lot of us do our job searches too which doesn't make sense. >> you have to make it easy for people to help you. i think one reason i had success at an early age getting my dream job right out of college i was clear on what i wanted to do getting your dream job is not a complicated process you have to get clear on where you want to go, then you need to find people who have had success in the field, you need to ask them for advice, and then you need to do what they tell you to do. it really is that simple. >> define dream job obviously, you know, you got to -- your dream job at the washington wizards and you would still be there you want to do this
9:16 am
forever but you can have a number of dream jobs. >> that is a great point i think a lot of people think a dream job will be some job you have your entire life i haven't found that to be true you can have multiple dream jobs throughout your life to figure out what your dream job is and to a lot of people that is the hardest part of getting it, you need to ask yourself this question what am i passionate about and really good at, and your dream job is going to be a job that combines your passions and your talents in a way that matters to you. >> you put -- i have to say i have the opportunity to mentor people some times and that kind of thing and a lot of the things you are saying, are things that i have said but you said succinctly and partly, in this book tell -- smartly in this book tell everyone what you are doing >> my current dream job is helping young professionals and students got their dream job i travel the country and i speak to students and alumna how to figure out what they want to do and get their dream job after
9:17 am
college as well. >> did you have the overcome -- a lot of people they are shy they don't like speaking in public and all that kind of thing did you have to overcome anything like that? you are a natural at this. >> well, thank you very much but i went through every challenge every job seeker does, i forced myself to go out and network with people because nothing else was networking for me i tried applying for jobs online tried newspaper ads tried career fairs it didn't work when i stopped looking for jobs and looked for people it was amazing in a period of 6 weeks i went from being hopeless to interview being the team president for nbas washington wizards things can change quickly. >> that is amazing it is a fascinating book, pete, i got my dream job and so can you, pick it up and listen to this guy he is talking sense thanks for coming. >> good to have you here. >> good book i got my dream job so can you.
