chewing up food and give it to their baby it is a problem if you make it routine. >> she put it out to the public people are weighing in on this. can you tell us about premastication. >> it is not new and it seems there are many cultures still, in some parts of the world where that is an acceptable and predictable way of transitioning babys from breast milk to solid foods in our country it is not routine it is not standard, i think that when we look at how we deal with that transition it is a much more sensory and developmental process, that i think needs to be directly parent to child, with your eyes, looking at them and giving them the kind of feedback they need. i am not sure that is necessarily i think prolonging something, in the form of premastication is a healthy thing for a baby >> basically babies need to learn how to chew and eat as you would in today's society is that fair? >> i think it does confer a

real nice transition for them to understand what nutrition is about their bodies and their brains are sponges they just are taking in everything nutrients as well as all that feedback when they can use their mouths, to sense something new, it is very different from what they were doing breast or bottle feeding it is a real new experience exciting, they need a face looking at them giving them that encouragement and enthusiasm becomes a real social element i think that is how we grow our families, with the goal of having our meal time and our exchanges at meal time very positive psycho social event. >> let's talk about advantages to this though because the question was what about the adults, the bacteria in an adults mouth what about if there is anything going on is this sanitary and safe let's talk about advantages to this. >> well, if there are advantages, they are strictly in the mouth of the beholder, so to speak. if you are doing this because

you have no other way of feeding your baby that is a great advantage if you are doing this because you don't like the way other foods are prepared and you thing preparing them in your own mouth is a better alternative that is great too. i don't think there is a great confession to any other let's say immune logical, nutritional benefit certain societycultures where there may not be that kind of scrutiny of the quality of food we feed our babies or not access to kinds of vehicles we use, prepared food or baby find grinders to feed your baby maybe it is a reasonable alternative in that transition phase to solids, the biggest thing for me is our society has a hard time limiting their babies if they develop behaviours they feel are reinforcing for them as parents reinforce their own specific social and emotional needs it can get out of hand i worry about families where that becomes the norm and that actually extends into a period

class when i finished the book. >> well, you will be taking it soon. all right holly thank you. derek thomas of thomas landscapes how are you sir. >> good how are you? >> good a little chilly. >> a little brisk cooler than it was earlier this morning. >> time for us to do our segment ask the garden guy these are questions literally people have -- people see you on the streets and say i have a question for you. >> or send them to the website or through facebook. >> you are nice enough to answer them a question from michael in dupont circle the question is, last year my herb garden was over run with weeds i don't want to use chemicals to prevent them what do you recommend that will help me have a great garden and not loads of weeds. >> a lot of people are going organic what you can do, mulch has been used for years, as a weed preventative but what you can do, is use things like paper towels, newspaper, or even a paper bag, the one thing
9:53 am
to make sure if you are using newspaper make sure the ink you can usually call the paper producing it, find out if they are using a soy based ink if you are using a newspaper you don't want to use the ink with chemicals in it, what you can do if they are using the paper towels, take and cut an opening and put that around your existing herbs, what that is going to do, is give you the ability to then go back, and mulch over that, and it is going to help prevent the weeds. >> overtime does that bio degrade. >> that bio degrades that is the reason we are using paper the other thing you can do is take the paper bag, you make a cut in it, take your herb plant, plant it down in there, once again, we are going to mulch around that, and then tony i know you have got a couple more segments, stand back a little bit there, and
9:54 am
what you want to do at that point is water all of that down, what that is going to do is help keep that in place, you can mulch, put more mulch over top of it and cut more slits as you decide that you need to plant more plants. the weeds are not going to be able to germinate but yet you will be able to have good vegetables organically. >> all right tell me how much time i have left please 2 minutes which question do you want to go to. >> about the grasses. >> all right this is from kathy from grover park my ornamental grasses have become over grown is it difficult to divide them. >> not difficult make sure this grass is not really -- it doesn't have much of an edge but what you want to make sure if your grasses do have an edge you use gloves cut it like that and take bigger sheers, and actually get down in there, don't be afraid of it, get down in there, cut, and pull apart at the roots, and what you want
9:55 am
to end up with is 2 or more grass plants that is a little tough to get in, once you get it apart you end up with, this, will grow a brand new plant. >> okay great. 1 minute left question from susan capitol hill i have been given gift plants for the holidays, rosemary and tulips what do i do with them now. i was told tulips would not live but i would like to try to plant them is it worth it help. >> tulips aren't worth it they have been totally bred out but if you want the try with the tulips cut off the spent blooms make sure they don't go to seed give it a try but they are so inexpensive just get new ones in the fall rosemary is a fabulous herb you want to make sure as you take the foil off that, get rid of that, and then you also want to get the plant out of the pot, the big thing is you want to make sure there is no roots that are really
9:56 am
like a mesh, these roots will be nice and healthy but when you go to plant it break it apart so that when you put it into the ground you get a good start and it will last for years. >> tour man great answers ask the garden guy, thank you very much. >> tony a little bit of dirty hands. >> we will be right back
