back upstairs to you. >> thank you tucker. we continue to follow breaking news out of the district dc firefighters on the scene of a house fire >> it brock out 6:30 a.m., locust road northwest that is where fox 5s sherry lee is live to give us this latest. good morning. >> good morning allison and audrey firefighters are really just cleaning up at this point the fire started in a second floor rear bedroom, three people were rescued from inside that house, one man was unconscious and had to be revived, firefighters got the call 6:35 a.m. of a house fire, locust road northwest firefighters arrived within five minutes smoke pouring from the second floor an elderly woman in her -9d 0s and two sons live in the house, the fire was contained to the second floor and firefighters knocked down the fire quickly they were able to rescue the three people inside, they found the first two people down stairs another man upstairs,

firefighters say they only got one call reporting the fire to 911. they believe that call initiated from inside the house, telling them there were people trapped, one of the two people who was found down stairs told the firefighters there was some body else upstairs that is how they were able to go up and rescue that man he was actually in a room adjacent to the one that was on fire, he did not have burn injuries, so it is believed his injuries are due to smoke inhalation the other two people were taken to hospital as well with smoke inhalation, no word yet on that man's condition. that is the latest here in northwest back to you. thank you some of our other top stories, big stories possible ncaa violations at a local university. >> howard university is launching a self-imposedded investigation into the claims, the school took extreme measures initially suspending all athletic competition and then backed away, from that, only removing some of the

athleting from participating howard -- athletes from participating. howard university said misuse of textbook vouchers is at the center of the inv gas. students -- investigation. students and athletes are worried about future sanctions. >> this is a serious problem you have people here on scholarship as far as athletics you are basically telling students they cannot continue at howard they won't be able to get their scholarships through athletics. >> in a statement, the university said it is working quickly to resolve this matter no word from the ncaa on whether it has launched its own investigation. more trouble on another local college campus police at university of maryland investigating two separate hate incidents in one case, anti semitic vandalism was found in an elevator in another case a supervisor, discovered a noose in a space underneath renovations both took place in

academic buildings so far no arrests. jury in frederick county awarding $650,000 to a couple whose dog was shot by a sheriff's deputy, the whole thing was recorded by the cruisers dash cam, the couple let one deputy come inside their home and while they were putting their dogs in a kennel another deputy walked outside the house. their dog trotted toward the deputy with her tail wagging but that deputy pulled his gun and shot the dog it survived but has a badly damaged leg that may be amputated, the jury awarded them $620,000, paying the couple -- saying the couples rights were violated when deputies entered without permission. some other top stories texas governor perry will take a tour today of the devastation caused by a series of tornadoes, as many as a dozen twisters ripped through the dallas suburb of lancaster on tuesday, destroying more than 600 homes, another 100 homes

were damaged in the town of forney, at least 150 people were injured across the region no one was killed. former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky heads back to court today he is accused of sexually abusing ten boys over 15 years lawyers will debate his request to have all charges against him dropped among other issues the hearing comes two months before he is scheduled to go on trial sandusky does deny the charges and currently is on house arrest until his trial in early june. later this afternoon president obama is signing the jobs act, into law in a rose garden ceremony, it is part of a jobs initiative that he proposed last year to help small businesses and start ups create new jobs. >> on the president's health care law the white house has until noon to see whether the president believes the supreme court has the authority to review his health care plan as doug luzader reports a federal judge is demanding it in

writing. >> so far in the white house it has struggled to explain the president's remarks about his health care plan and the power the u.s. supreme court has to over turn it. the president sounded resolute >> i am confident the supreme court will not take what would be an unprecedented extraordinary step. >> it was a remarkable statement from a president and former constitutional law professor, seeming to question whether the u.s. supreme court has the authority to over turn his health care plan, critics pounced saying he was trying to intimidate the court saying a federal court in texas ordered the justice department to explain what the president meant. the nonpartisan group said the statement the president stated was false they have over turned laws by congress 159 times. the president has since tried to clarify he meant

when we walked into the studio marcus and i were talking about the fact everybody really ponied up the difference this year, is all of these kids are making these songs their own they are not doing them verbatim they are doing break downs, prechoruses, changing things up it made it an interesting year a great night for almost everyone. >> almost. >> i think jack and i were talking about the level they have you have to have an identity and confidence, to do what colten did and then give a shout out to the band, that you took the arrangement from, that is a level of class, that you get with experience or i just think now because maybe shows like american idol the artists come in having a certain level of experience. >> you can attest to that you need to walk on the stage with a certain amount of swagger. >> absolutely just about all the performers seemed ready the

show business the vibe he is with the band look at him strutting on stain here, fooling around with the players that is a good thing and look at the production value on this, a strong performance but the vocal was flat he can learn that. >> somebody i think has the entire package is joshua, i cannot believe you thought that was the best performance when you had joshua doing this ♪ [ music ] ♪ >> the whole little group and then walks out. taking awhile to get to it here he is coming up and the performance of the night was the duet between joshua and jessica here he is. >> right there he shuts it down. >> i was blown away, by this performance, even in listening to the original song which was powerful, this version he definitely took it home. >> i think it was probably the second best performance of the night. i agree he really showed a

rich soil gerber daisy prefers rocky soil by full sun your hyacinth is a spring bulb it will grow after a period of times the done. now, the hydrangea a great gift plant and a lot of people wonder why it is a little more pricey than lillystuff like that, is because the hydrangea after it has bloomed what you want to do andly actually get rid of one of these blooms to show the viewers, you want to take and cut it, right below where the bloom came out, okay so you want to remove that when the bloom is spent, take this and put it out into your garden and this is one from last year, if you are challenged with your space, you can actually plant it in a pot, and a hydrangea will grow and bloom in a pot for years to come. >> that is good to know because they are so beautiful. >> they prefer a little more shaded now i want to do a

little project for the viewers, so say that you don't have a garden but you want a mix of plants all yearlong. what we are going to start out with, these are tulips they are done they are spent. >> right. >> but what i am going to do is layer these in, as the first layer, okay so these bulbs will go down. once these -- i am going to go ahead and cut these away just for illustrative purposes. >> mm-hmm. >> once these turn completely yellow this year if you are doing a container like this, you plant these down, you plant them a little lower, than what you were anticipating now what we can do is, those bulbs are at the right depth to come back next year, what we can now do is we can create a seasonal planter, that is going to be gorgeous, all season long, that is a begonia, a tuberus beowen

yeah this is a plant -- begonia, this is is a plant called creeping charlie in the back we will pop in a corral bell, now, you've created a beautiful container that will stay on your patio, on your front door on your entry, all season long, and the great thing about it is next year, the corral bells the creeping charlie will come back and the tulips will come up next spring on cue. >> so i don't have to worry about my tulip bulbs. >> being buried underneath absolutely not so you will get like double bang for the buck with that container. >> now what about lilies because that is such an easter kind of thing pass over. >> right. >> will those come back next year. >> every year make sure you do a really rich loam cut them off below the lowest bloom a lot of people want to just cut it here if you leave the seed head that zaps the plant from energy cut

it below the lowest bloom put it outside in good rich loam and you will have lilies for years to come. >> dead heading with a purpose. >> absolutely if you know the plant things like the daffodils which are sold now, they can be put into your garden in a sunny or in a shaded location, and you can enjoy those for years to come. >> now suppose you don't have much of a green thumb you just want to keep them how long could you keep them looking pretty? >> indoors. >> a few weeks indoors make sure you don't let the soil mass dry out these plants have been forced which means that hydrangea should look like this, so make sure that you keep it moist because it has been forced into bloom, if you keep it moist and you don't have a lot of leaf loss you can take that plant and put it outdoors and it should rebloom for you this summer. >> derek some great really great advice. i think about all the

>> how long is the season. >> it is almost a yearlong. >> say way enough. >> way enough. >> and check it, fore side check. >> basically, six days a week and we go from about september through june, and then most people row in summer, so some people row abroad and i rowed in japan and england and italy then you come back and row it is a yearlong. >> it is i am thinking you have to cross train this is really cardiovascular >> yeah, a lot of us do track running a lot of people do swimming. sorry. a lot of swimming a lot of track but rowing is a very unique kind of thing most people just row yearlong. >> how intensive is it when you are out on the water do you have a good concept of those around you. >> yeah, you are pretty pumped with adrenaline i don't know it is probably the hardest i have

ever done you don't necessarily have to be coordinated like catching hand eye coordination but you have to kind of -- you have to be in top shape push yourself through a lot of barriers and i don't know probably hardest sport i have done. >> really mentally? >> yeah, mentally you have to be in the race mentality, all about pushing your limits and like ignoring the pain because you are going to hurt a lot. >> you guys get ready for the fast cart and i will tell you the invitational, friday and saturday we have a link 1 to 4 each afternoon come down and cheer on gw these guys are great and the other 11 teams that will be here as well and it is a beautiful setting no better place to watch the sport. >> ready. >> everyone sit.
