fox5's sherri ly is live outside the apartment in district heights this morning. >> reporter: raquel israel was found inside her apartment here on brooks drive. police say she was unresponsive and was already dead. sources tell fox 5 the 32-year- old was strangled. so far police have not identified a suspect. investigators say officers went to her apartment in district heights after someone called police asking to check on her. when they got there wednesday morning they found her body inside a bedroom. family members say a witness in the apartment with israel said a man knocked on the door, pointed a gun at them, forced them to the floor and took israel to the bedroom. there was arguing and the suspect hit her, then silence. the suspect ran. relatives are stunned, can't imagine why anyone would strangle her. >> it had to be someone, to me, that she know.

i mean, in order for all this to happen and her to open the door and, you know, somebody to take her life like that and don't nobody know anything about it, it's kind of strange. >> reporter: israel has four children. they're now being taking care of by a family member. police haven't confirmed the family's version of events and haven't said anything about what the motive may have been. family members are still puzzled. they say they don't believe israel had enemies and they can't understand why anybody would take her life and leave her four children without a mother. that's the latest here in district heights, back to you. thank you. in the district now, the medical examiner has ruled the hypothermia death of an abandoned infant an homicide. she was left outside of a house

northeast in january. neighbors held a candlelight vigil after she died. it was 25 degrees the night she was left on the porch in a towel. the parents have not been found. marion barry is apologizing about comments about asian- american business owners. he said "we've got to do something about those asians coming in and opening up businesses and dirty shops. they ought to go ." he later said "we need african-american business people to be able to take their places, too." he later apologized and said he has a solid record of relationships with the asian people. but yesterday he seemed to dig a deeper hole by suggesting ethiopian business owners would be better. >> a new breed of persons who come in, ethiopians, which are

black, and they are much better connected. if you go to the mellon store, martin luther king, the owner there giving out turkeys. >> mayor gray is not happy with barry's words about the asian merchants and said there is no place for those comments in d.c.'s diverse community. a conference on women and the economy kicked off at the white house this morning. this is a live look at the white house conference. the president is about to speak there. valerie jarrett is speaking now. she is one of the president's senior advisors. as a chair of the white house council on women and girls. she is delivering, or was thereforing opening remarks. rick santorum still hopes to stop romney. he met with conservative leaders yesterday, trying to find a way to prevent romney from becoming the really nominee for president. romney, meanwhile, is turning his attention to the primary in

santorum's home state of pennsylvania. later this month that primary will take place. he worked the phones and is criticizing president obama. >> this president has been an anti-energy president. if i'm president, i will make sure we get our gas, our oil, our coal, and we will build that pipeline of oil from canada that will bring more oil into this country. [ applause ] >> president obama signed the jobs act into law to help small businesses hire new workers. a mixed bag of news on the economy. >> the important jobs report came out minutes ago. 125,000 jobs were added last month. but that's down in each of the previous three months. the rate did drop 1 percentage point to 8.2%. that's the lowest since january of 2009. fox's doug luzader has more on the jobs report now. >> reporter: you don't have to look further than the white

house to see how important today's numbers are. president obama signed a bill with bipartisan support to help small businesses expand. >> we've still got a lot of americans out there looking for a job, or looking for a job that pays better than the one they've got. >> reporter: but the news is improving. fewer americans sought unemployment last week, the lowest level in four years. still, the unemployment rate is high, and republicans, including house majority leader eric cantor point out jobs are one part of the picture. >> gas prices as we enter the summer traveling season are way too high. that will add an added burden on families that need to have more job security. >> reporter: there is no question that gas prices are sapping some of the economy's growing strength. money spent at the pump could be spent elsewhere. >> well, unemployment is declining and that helps president obama. but disposable income is dropping, mainly because of rapidly rising gas prices, and

that's a negative for the white house. so here you have two trends working against one another. and we'll follow them from month to month all the way to november. >> that was doug luzader reporting. the economy has added 850,000 jobs since december, the best four months of hiring in two years. a precident setting case in maryland this morning, involving two women married in california, but denied a divorce here in maryland. the court of appeals is hearing arguments from lawyers for the couple in two hours from now. they appealed after a maryland judge denied their divorce in 2010. today lawyers will argue that maryland should recognize gay marriage performed in other states. maryland passed a bill allowing same sex wedding but facing a referendum challenge in november and is not law just yet. if you would like to take

your favorite wine out to a special dinner to drink it, you will soon be able to do that in maryland. yesterday lawmakers approved a bill allowing customers to bring their own bottles to restaurants. not everyone is ready to raise a glass to the idea. beer, wine and liquor sales are critical to the restaurant business and some owners are worried patrons will shy away from their wine list to save money. >> there's a whole difference from that and a guy walking in with yellow tail he bought for $4.99 because i don't want to pay your wine prices. >> the bill's author says there are safe guards to protect owners. not all owners have to participate, and they can make their own corkage fees and retain the rights not to open a bottle if it's on their wine

list. maryland's mega million mystery has lottery officials concerned. no one has come forward to claim their part of the jackpot. a baltimore woman told friends she bought the ticket, but has yet to show proof. now the director of the maryland lottery is suggesting players who bought tickets at that 7-eleven double-check their numbers. >> in all of the information that's out there in the media, that people not be mistaken in thinking the ticket has been claimed, only to have the legitimate ticket holder discard their ticket. that would truly be a tragedy in this circumstance. >> there were a total of three winning tickets in the drawing. so far, none of the winners has claimed their prize, but they have until september 28th to do so. still ahead on fox 5 morning news, we all know it's common for men to have facial hair. but what you may not know is it's common for some women, too.

♪ it's friday, today we answer an ask allison question, and this one is from an anonymous viewer. here's the question. she writes "it's about my facial hair and removal. i know there are laser hair removal treatments out there, but it seems to only last temporarily. is there a way for the hair to be removed permanently? if anyone can find a real and true answer to this problem so many women have, i know you can

." thank you very much. she says she has tried everything. thank you for having that much faith in me. i reached out to a friend of the show, because it issue affects so many women. i was reading online, cnn just said like some 20 million women each week go for facial hair treatments. that's probably waxing or they do the creams. it affects so many women. i know it can be very difficult to deal with. so if you watch the show, you've seen dr. todd perkins with metro derm come in and give answers. i reached out to him and got the short answer. he says laser hair removal does the trick. it does remove -- offer a permanent reduction of hair, which means the hairs that are removed are permanently removed. but it usually doesn't remove 100% of the hairs. basically the ones it does remove, it's taken care of and the hair that comes back, it's much finer and less noticeable.

because hair grows in cycles, you'll need five to six treatments done every four to six weeks. so multiple treatments to achieve generally 85 to 90% of permanent removal. the hairs that are left are smaller, thinner, lighter. he says laser hair removal can be done on any skin type from very light to very dark skin. but different lasers need to be used on lighter versus darker skin. we're looking there at examples as we continue to give you this answer here, the before on the left, of course. on the right after laser treatments. for example, if you have darker skin, like when you go into his office, for example, they use a laser that penetrates deeply into the skin. it destroys the hair follicle, while skipping the skin and not leading to color changes in the skin. some lasers can't be used on

darker skin, and if used can lead to permanent lightening or darkening of the skin. it's important to bring up that subject with your dermatologist. here's another picture, on the left the woman was a light mustache. she got the treatment, and on the right she looks hair-free on the right. it can be helpful for people with ingrown hairs, shaving bumps on men and women. it's important you choose an experienced doctor in the field. side effects, discomfort for a while, and swelling and redness lasting one to three days. remember that. there are at-home laser treatments, too. dr.perkins suggests you check with a physician before doing this. finally, a lot of people wonder about shaving. shaving does not make hair grow thicker or faster, because i think we grew up learning that. but waxing and plucking do make hairs grow thicker and faster.

what they are doing now. the magazine hits shelves today and i spoke with a staff writer for a preview. >> we caught up with all the finalists from the last 10 years. there have been 11 seasons now. there have been so many stars whose careers have been launched. from kelly clarkson, the ultimate first idol, and then later on winners like lee dewyze and how their careers are different is interesting. >> i had forgotten lee was a winner, because sometimes the number two or three even, they surpass the winner that year. but they all got their start the same way on idol. >> yeah, it's really interesting. sometimes the people who don't actually win go on to bigger and better thing. jennifer hudson, she didn't win her season and she won an academy award for dream girls. she's the only one on idol who has gone on to things like that. and then you have clay aiken who had a successful career and

has been on broadway and now in celebrity apprentice. and he was the number two guy, too. >> really, if i'm honest, because i have gotten a sneak peek at this, the hairstyles over the years, sanjaya cut his hair. it's amazing to look at the evolution. >> it's fun to see how people looked and you know, it's funny, but 10 years ago kelly clarkson had that funky hairstyle, to see all the fashions have changed and the hairstyles. and justin, if you remember him, he cut his hair, and was having a bad impact on his career, and now back to his original look. >> people magazine is always there on the cutting edge of what we're talking about, so i have to assume that "american idol" is definitely has made an impact on pop culture in our society for what is now the past 11 years. kind of amazing. >> it's kind of amazing. there are people that you now consider to be superstars that
