today to discuss north korea's rocket launch. in a spectacular failure, it broke up only a minute and a half after liftoff, crashing into the yellow sea 130 miles west of seoul, south korea. the white house is speaking out, saying "despite the failure of its attempted missile launch, north korea's action threatens regional security and violates international law." some speculate north korea will conduct a nuclear test next. american negotiators are heading to turkey for historic talks tomorrow on getting iran to give up its nukes. it's the first time in 15 months iran has agreed to return to the negotiating table. iran is facing several sanctions that are only just starting to cripple its economy and israel is threatening to atake their nuclear sites. closer to home, a northern

virginia electrician is learning his fate for producing an online propaganda video for a pakistani organization. he admitted to providing support to the group blamed for the deadly 2008 attack in mumbai. prosecutors say he professed a wish to die as a martyr. sex trafficking cases, federal prosecutors say all three men admitted to recruiting high school aged girls into prostitution. the feds are calling it a growing trend, claiming gangs see prostitution as a low risk, high reward way to cash in. one of those who pleaded guilty yesterday faces life in prison now. the other two are hoping for lesser sentences in return for their cooperation. d.c. police want to talk to this man. investigators say he is a

person of interest in a sexual assault that happened in southeast wednesday night. it happened on 21st street. police say the woman was physically and sexually assaulted. if you recognize this person, the clothing perhaps, call police. this morning the white house is in damage control mode after comments made by a democratic strategist about republican presidential candidate mitt romney's wife. doug luzader has more on the controversy and an apology from the commander-in-chief. >> reporter: president obama has been working tirelessly to win women voters. and in an instant, the conversation changed. with white house concerns growing that a re-election strategy based in part on women voters is now in jeopardy, president obama quickly defended romney's wife. >> i don't have a lot of patience for commentary about

the spouses of political candidates. >> reporter: democratic strategist hillary rozen created a political brush fire this week during a cnn interview when she dismissed ann romney's economic views, saying the stay at home mother of five has never worked a day in her life. that prompted this response. >> i will tell you that mitt said to me more times than you would imagine, ann, your job is more important than mine. >> reporter: president obama's reelection campaign instantly saw trouble. just a week ago, the president hosted a conference on women, and prominent democrats have spoken again and again about a republican war on women. before the day was over, rozen issued a written statement. i know my words on cnn last night were poorly chosen, she said. i apologize to ann romney and anyone else who was offended. in a new fox news poll, the president has a sizable 8-point lead over romney when it comes to women voters. romney has a larger lead among

men. a growing challenge as both men now pursue gender specific strategies. the romney campaign has been employing ann romney more and more to win women voters. her role in the campaign has suddenly grown larger over the past few days. in washington, doug luzader, fox news. high school students in fairfax county could be able to sleep in longer. >> last night the school board voted to study what it would take to push the start times back until at least 8:00 a.m. our own melanie alnwick joins us now with more on this debate. good morning, melanie. >> good morning. most fairfax county high schools begin at 7 to in the morning, and parents have been asking to get them to start later, saying their kids can't get enough sleep. the parents presented the school board with studies last night showing that teens aren't wired to go to bed early, and they need nine and a half hours of sleep to perform well in school and on the field and roads. 19 states have school districts that have changed their start

times and that includes arlington county, which pushed back to 8:15 a.m. in 2001. loudoun county high school begins at 9:00 a.m., and fairfax advocates say their kids deserve the extra hour of sleep. a proposal in 2009 was rejected because of costs. there are concerns the switch would mean chaos for other school and family schedules. >> the science is solid. but the problem is, that the school board is putting the cart before the horse. they're setting this as a goal before they've engaged the people who could be impacted the most by any change. and i think that's wrong. >> the superintendent will study how neighboring school systems manage their later start times and report back to the board in june. some parents are now able to get their kids out of first period classes by enrolling them in adult education college or online courses they can take later in the day. they also have the option to request a waive of the seven period day. however, advocates say it's

important to meet with the student's guidance counselor first. back to you guys. thanks, melanie. checking other headlines, a police standoff in new hampshire is over. the police chief of that tiny town of greenland was unfortunately shot and killed during a drug bust last night just days away from his retirement. after several hours of the standoff, police sent in a robot, and found the bodies of a suspect and a woman believed to be his hostage. four other officers were shot. they are in the hospital this morning. another police standoff, this one on the west coast. fire broke out at the apartment where a suspect was holed up after he shot two people, including a sheriff's deputy. the fire which was just put out, started after police tried to serve an eviction notice. more than 100 officers are still surrounding that building along with the fbi and swat team. now to the trayvon martin

shooting. george zimmerman made his first court appearance yesterday. he was dressed in a prison jumpsuit and handcuffs. he was accompanied by his new lawyer. he barely spoke during the hearing. he's charged with second degree martin. zimmerman is being held in protective custody because of the notoriety of the case. he'll be formally arraigned may 29th. it's hard for reston residents to forget their founder. >> simon still lives in the virginia town where there's a statue of him. he just celebrated his 98th birthday. we're going to talk to him about this major accomplishment. ♪ there he is. all right, as we head to the break, did you play the lottery in the district? how you could be a millionaire. someone bought a power ball ticket on georgia avenue, i was

tomorrow reston will host a celebration in robert simon's honor with special guests and everyone is invited. joining us more now is robert simon, the founder of reston, virginia. mr.simon, it is a pleasure to have you on the air this morning. may i first say happy birthday to you. >> thank you very much. >> what did you do to celebrate your birthday? >> we had a lovely party at the nature house. it's the 70-acre nature center. lovely building. nice party. >> i'm glad it was a nice party. tell me about, after all these years, founding reston so many years ago. you still live in the community obviously. what are you most pleased about when it comes to your creation? >> i'm not sure i got that

question. could you give it to me again? >> sure. what are you proudest of when it comes to reston? >> oh, i think there are a couple of things. one, families grow here and stay here. the other thing is, we have quite a few people who could afford mega houses, but they chose to stay here in smaller houses, because this is a community. i think that's what i'm proudest of. >> i've had occasion to spend time in reston, and it's remarkable to see how it's grown. the reston town center, that area, where over recent years we've seen some of the high rises go up, and i know early on there was some concern about that, but that area really has turned into quite the region for night life and the like. are you excited about how that

has developed? >> well, i think the thing that's a little unusual about the united states is we do not have plazas. in europe, the plazas are the gathering places, the heart of the communities. when we got started here we built a plaza at lake ann, and that's where we're at now. this is the mother of town center, which is a wildly successful plaza. >> there are more changes coming. we have the big construction project out there for the metro stop that is going to open there at some point. do you see that as a plus, or do you have concerns about metro being out there? >> well, i'm of two minds, one it makes sense to have rail coming from washington out

here. one of the problems, of course, is that it was hijacked by the people from tyson's corner, so that the federal government was all expended there and phase two is what should have come to reston town center and out to loudoun county. there's a question still whether the funds will be available to complete rail to dulles, which is what it should have been in the first place. >> i know that is a topic we cover and will continue to cover. tell me about the celebration taking place for your birthday that folks can come out to. >> well, this is going to be a community outpouring and we're going to have young and old and people in between dancing, music and art exhibition. it should be lovely. and good food.

looking fairly good. allison? thank you. ♪ tell me something good ♪ it's time for ask allison. today's topic is about boundaries and boundary busters. here is this week's question from a concerned mom. she writes, my mother-in-law bought my daughter a cell phone to reward her for good grades. now she spends most of her time on the phone with her, and my daughter will stop whatever she's doing to answer the phone when grandma calls. she spends nearly every weekend at they are grandmother's and all they do is eat and watch tv. i've tried talking to my husband, but he says he doesn't want to get in the middle. am i wrong for thinking she should spend more time with friends? let me say before we introduce our guest, it would seem to me that you, mom, would have to have a heart to heart sit down with your mother-in-law if your husband doesn't want to get

involved. sounds like the one major thing you have in common is your love for your daughter and her grandmother. so i'm hopeful something can be reached that this will be resolved in a peaceful manner. here to help you answer is emory baldwin, a licensed clinical marriage therapist and parent educator. wonderful to have you here again. welcome back to the show. >> thank you. >> i got a little more information because i wanted to get to the bottom of this. grandma did not ask permission before buying this phone. and that was a huge conference in my home with my 11-year-old. just starting from there, that seems like a problem. >> sure. essentially stepping over the leadership of the mother and father making decisions on behalf of their own child. so it's a boundary, and it's

also respect. the grandmother, i'm sure the father's respect for his mother and wife's respect for her mother-in-law. but also the grandmother's respect and supporterring that relationship, too. >> other sticking point is mom doesn't want to push too hard. she's trying to sign her up. the little girl used to be in activities but seems disinterested now. to you, what is that a red flag of? no problems in school, but still has no interest in spending time with anyone other than grandma. >> sure. it raises a lot of questions in my mind in a way, i think sometimes when children go along too easily with what their parents want them to do. mom is pushing her to do things, but it keeps mom busier with her in a way that it's hard to get mom involved in the stuff she does. this might be a way of keeping her mom busy with her, keeping her mom maying attention and even worried attention is better than too little attention sometimes. >> is there something she needs

to do to maybe encourage her daughter to want to spend more time with, she has older brothers and a little sister, and their nuclear family? >> sure. i wonder, hearing the story, i wonder if when the girl goes to her grandmother's house, she has that one-on-one intention of feeling like her grandmother is fascinated with her and enjoys her company. and i know this mother has been busy, of course with the birth of a new baby and a toddler and an infant. so to give her, regain her daughter's relationship, i think it would be to show she's interested in her and she wants to be involved with her. a lot of this is curiosity, asking good questions. letting her know she enjoys her company. >> my advice to the viewer was, you got to sit down woman to woman with the mom. especially if husband doesn't want to get involved. is that the answer here?

>> oh, yes. i think the mother and grandmother are natural allies. they love and cherish this girl and how lucky this girl is to have a mother and grandmother who love her so much. so there's so much they can do to support each other. that grandmother doesn't need to be afraid mother is trying to cut off her relationship with her precious granddaughter. but also the grandmother can see she can be so much more helpful to the granddaughter by also supporting the mother and of course, i had a great relationship with my grandmother. it was wonderful to go and complain and know i had her ear. >> sure. >> but it's also valuable to know my grandmother helped me understand my mother by explaining things. there could be in a way a back channel supporting each other that way, as well as respecting the boundaries of the family and the mother's natural desire to want to be close to her

daughter. >> there are so many more issues here, grandma is recently single. still a young woman. just turned 60. my question so the viewer can have a real concrete thing here, how much does she push? am i wrong for feeling this way, so does she throw down the gauntlet and say, no, this weekend you're staying with us? does that happen? >> sure. often it turns into a fight. so i think -- sounds like these are problems with solutions. to approach them as, this is a problem that's really bugging me, what can i do to solve this, how can we work together? and you know, to her mother-in- law, i'd like to solve this problem with you. but i'll solve it on my own if i have to. but to open up the doors and even with the daughter, this is a problem that i'd like to solve. would you be willing to work with me on this? >> there are wonderful resources like pep to come and speak with someone who is a

9:46 this morning. holly is getting great design tips. >> she is at the d.c. design house open now through the 13th. good morning. >> reporter: it actually opens tomorrow and we are getting the first inside look today. that's how we do things here. this is a wonderful home built in 1956. the family that lived here raised six children here. the people in the area called it the blue house, because they had to 40-year tradition of always decorating their house at christmas time in blue lights. it has been redecorated on the inside, thanks to 21 of the area's top designers.

we are on the third floor now. we're going to show you where the kids hang out. we're starting out with nancy, a kid at heart. she had the responsibility of doing a boy's room. that's your speciality, is kids' rooms, and for the grownups who love them, right. >> that's right. exactly. >> reporter: what are you doing here? >> we started with a wonderful window treatment fabric that had elements of the forest, and we incorporated in a tree bookcase, and little animal elements. >> reporter: you have a theme, but it's not in your face. it's understated. >> no, definitely not. definitely don't do themey rooms. >> reporter: one of the things i liked about this, simple things that maybe someone could do at home, is the use of the two head boards. explain your thought process behind that. >> most parents want to know when we're doing a room for a child, what elements are going to stay and which things are going to have permanence.
