9:18 am
historical part of it the tragedy of the columbia, it is amazing. >> there are an incredible amount of dots to connect when i first started doing my research i thought i was telling a holocaust story as i started to peel back the layers what i found was the amazing story of columbia crew the most diverse group of astronauts to fly together in space, as you will see tomorrow night what they brought to the world was a message of diversity, and how important div.ty is, to all -- diversity is to all of us that is why this story is so important today that this story should be told, woven within them is the story of the holocaust, and this horrific attempt to stamp out the diversity in this world. ultimately while i thought the story was telling a holocaust story it becomes the story of the magnificence of the columbia crew and space

9:32 am
would talk a little bit about how special discovery is. >> it was the third shuttle to join the fleet, it first launched in 1984, you are seeing that launch right here the first shuttle to return to space, after both challenger and columbia disasters and it was the first shut toll dock with the russian -- shuttle to dock with the russian space station it is the only one to fly five times in one year. >> as a programming note a reminder we are going to stay on the air past 10:00 a.m. to bring you live coverage of the fly over along the potomac as discovery heads out to dulles airport you can also watch our coverage online, at myfoxdc.com then of course it goes on to udvar hazy e-mail pictures you snap of the shuttle, to fox 5 news pix@g mail.com. >> where it is headed again?
9:33 am
>> another vary hazy. >> i just like -- udvar hazy. >> i just like making you say that. yesterday was the warmest day of the year, 89 regan national, cold front came through temperatures have fallen back a little bit but comfortable afternoon, highs mid-to upper 70s. 69 washington see the numbers, 70 annapolis, dulles, 65- degrees a few clouds filtering through, that will hold temperatures down here temporarily a nice pop in these, comfortable range at the moment, 73 quantico, and leonard town, good morning, 72 degrees for you. let's do winds, want to mention the winds they picked up our cold front came through overnight, south and east of the city in its wake winds out of the north and west gusting
9:34 am
21 washington 14 dulles, 17 manassas, a bit of a breeze today i don't think you need a jacket temperatures 70s later tonight as temperatures fall back into the 50s. overnight it will be a cool down tonight we will be in for a cooler regime of air next couple days your light cloud cover and you saw in the live shot here scattered clouds at best, i don't thing this will be a major issue here for your day today, we should see mostly sunny skies as we have a little system approaching from the south and west, impressive rain, down into tennessee, down into louisiana, we will see if we can get a little bit of sha that shower activity we need -- of that shower activity we need the rain we are running big time deficits maybe a few showers in the forecast by tomorrow afternoon, cooler temperatures with cloud cover, until then nice looking day mostly sunny looking skies, breezy and cooler, winds out of the northwest, 10 to 15, partly
9:35 am
cloudy tonight, cool overnight jacket overnight, 55 your overnight low winds out of the north and west 5 to 10, mostly cloudy tomorrow a few showers during the afternoon s then get it out of here thursday and friday look great and could be a soaking rain this weekend's forecast, still question marks, possibility of pretty good rains, need it for some period of this weekend. that is weather i think i am going over to you. >> tucker thank you. jury selection under way in the roger clemens trial the award winning pitcher is accused of misleading congress in hockey a tough playoff loss for the caps how do they look heading into game four, mike wise of 106.7 the fan and washington post joins us for sports talk i read you and enjoy reading you thank you for coming in. >> thanks tony appreciate that. >> caps first. rocking the red very exiting, unfortunate loss last night but
9:36 am
you know things still look promising. >> if you are a caps fan you can't come out of last night's verizon center gathering with the notion your team is done they went toe to toe with the defending stanley cup champs, scored some goals, braden let one by late but back and forth, the big concern is nicklas backstrom, the star player along with alex ovechkin he got a penalty at the end, a match penalty that should cost him a game unless it is rescinded, by the nhl lords of discipline. >> right [ laughter ] >> so they need to be in the nhl office to say that wasn't as bad a penalty as people thing it was it was lost in the hull a be loo over the loss. they need him to play. >> when will that decision be made? >> before thursday's game four but with all the fights in pittsburgh philadelphia series they may wait until tomorrow. >> i want to interyou want for
9:37 am
a second -- interrupt you for a second these are the first images of space shuttle discovery arriving in our area coming from the south we mentioned it was being seen in fredericksburg it is approaching our area coming from the south it will fly over the dulles airport area first and then my understanding kind of go around the belt way then up the river, down near national airport across the washington area, parts of the mall area and head back out to dulles. >> i feel like i am a part of history. >> well, you are. one thing about the caps i want to say you mentioned toe to toe, and they are going -- i know they have last two but they are doing great against the bruins i think they can still pull this off. >> they are going to have to they got out hit last night they will have to get a little bit more production from their top two lines, other than that, they are sticking right there, such a deflected puck off the skate kind of series, anything a break here or there will determine who wins this.
9:38 am
let's talk about roger clemens i will be honest with you, i am not even following this, that closely, why are we going through this again. >> i think, you are in the majority of americans tony, there is such a disenchantment over congress prosecuting an alleged steroid user from back in the day, my only thing is i would tell people this, when congress embarrassed baseball and the commissioner, bud selig on capital hill in 2005 and brought if suspected steroid users that embarrassed baseball into stricter drug testing policies and i really feel, that while there is a segment of society that enables the player to use and just wants to see that ball go into mccovey cove in san francisco don't care how it got there, another part wants to see -- believe what we see and these guys are uber humans working hard and not just putting syringes in their bodies >> my son said that is what most people want they want it
9:39 am
to be real >> you can't lie to congress who should be lying to congress? shouldn't be lying to anybody but congress not good. >> all right. mike, we have to cut it short but do appreciate you coming in. >> good seeing you. >> come back any time. >> allison tucker back to you. >> tony thank you. so tucker, we are on discovery watch we said between the hour of 10 and 11 we should see it all the people camped out and get that up close personal look but at 9:39 a.m. we are starting to see the first spotting of shuttle discovery, as it approaches dulles. >> here a couple minutes early i guess it will lower its elevation to people can get a good look at it and then come into town but beautiful of course ideal weather conditions to get a chance to check it out many people can probably just step outside their house and see it, as it will be approaching here shortly, incredible scene there.
9:40 am
i mentioned much earlier today when i was a kid i still remember it down in houston, and i had a chance to see one of space shuttles piggy backing on a 747, i don't remember which i was small but still remember it like it was yesterday. >> i wish i remembered i am wondering if the one i saw was enterprise coming here many many years ago this is our view from sky fox now, so indeed it is here. >> wow. >> i saw one look at the escort planes flying along with it, very cool. i saw one in the 80s, i know that doing a fly by as well very impressive and actually, kind of moving especially now, because this is the retierment of really the work force of the shuttle fleet. >> of course the final resting place would be, the space museum, udvar hazy space museum, throngs of people waiting today, i am sure the excitement is building,.
9:41 am
>> a lot of space buffs take a look thousands of them here, you think you are down on the space coast watching a launch, these are folks who have been out here before dawn, it will pass overhead and eventually make its home for eternity, near dulles airport, you see the folks here taking a look, it is about the fly overhead, we are told it will be about 1500 feet, which is fortunately below the cloud cover, there is quite a bit of cloud cover there are times it will dip lower than that but people here are very excited we were in earlier and saw where discovery will be displayed, it is where the shuttle pro toe type enterprise has been since 2003 it will be replaced thursday when they finally get the shuttle off the back of the
9:42 am
747, and then, wheel discovery into the big hanger here, 14 of the shuttle commanders who flew aboard, who piloted discovery will be here thursday as will john glen the first american to or bit the earth he will be here thursday as well for that ceremony we are just moments away from an exciting moment, for all these many hundreds perhaps thousands of people, lining the property here, we are just below, just south of the runway at dulles airport where discovery and its piggy back will land n about an hour from now so we will keep our eyes open here we are waiting to see helicopters here government helicopters making sure everything is okay you will see a sight in just a moment as this baby and an $11 million ride this is costing the government nasa working with the government an $11 million piggy back ride to bring discovery from the
9:43 am
kennedy kennedy space center here to dulles virginia where on average 1.2 million people visit even though it is way out in dulls will this is not the museum on the mall we are out near the airport but a million two visitors come here, every year, to visit a lot of artifacts including the inola gay soon they will be joined by discovery thursday. there are a series of events here through sunday, at air and space for the welcoming of discovery 39 visits to space, to or bit, including launching the huble telescope, docking with the russian space station and of course the two flights after challenger in 88, space shuttle fleet was grounded for two years after the january 1986 disaster, discovery was the first one up after that and again in 2003 after columbia, we are going to spin around
9:44 am
here take a look at the folks we g moments from now we saw it in the horizon. it is on its way it will be close to us all here at discovery, where finally it will be wheels down on display, for eternity they are telling us here in an hour but in a moment or two it will fly over head i think what they are trying to do is expose as many people as possible to this unusual sight and frankly it will be a sight similar to this later, next week, when nasa takes enterprise the pro toe type, it has been here since 2003 at udvar hazy it will get a piggy back ride to new york city and go on display at the intrepid museum, and we interviewed mr. chris kaiser earlier he flew for the navy many years he is here brought his wife here he is a space
9:45 am
buff just wouldn't want to miss this thing we have a lot of families out here, and you know i don't know if you guys can see, discovery on the 747 from another vantage point but we will see it in a moment here and everybody is very excited. >> bob we will hang with you because we do want to see it, you know we want to get reaction from everybody and see it as it does approach dulles airport for those wondering yes, it is early, it is running i would estimate 15, 20 minutes ahead of schedule, which is great, and we don't know what the exact plan is, but nasa when it does this kind of thing, is pretty accommodating, so you know the folks at nasa know everyone is coming out the see this my suspicion even though it is ahead of schedule it will continue to fly around the region for the allotted amount of time. >> from 10 to 11 still. >> i suspect even though it is running a little early. >> i mean, it is hard to understand that we are watching
9:46 am
now a 747, outfitted to you know, give this shuttle, basically a lift but how magnificent how fitting, for the work horse of the fleet, to be basically -- >> here we go guys. >> bob. >> oh, my goodness i don't want to get too excited take a look at that puppy that is not 1500 feet. >> wow >> my goodness that is about a couple hundred feet. >> wow. >> i am going to be quiet and let the people applaud as it goes overhead. oh, my goodness. [ applause ] [ sound of jet engines overhead ] >> woohoo >> my sentiments exactly bob.
9:47 am
>> man. >> that has got a t 38 escort with it, we will see this in an hour it will take that same path and land in about an hour but first, folks all around the legion are going to -- region are going to get a chance to see that that was no 1500 feet. >> bob let me say nasa did say at certain points it will fly as low as 300 feet that what you just got. >> what is your reaction ma'am. >> oh, it was amazing to have it just above us, incredible >> my goodness yourself. >> i thought it was amazing just seeing it upfront it is beautiful. >> are you supposed to be somewhere else but here now. >> yeah, i am supposed to be at school. >> show and tell. >> yeah. >> very cool. >> take a look. >> work. >> a lot of people are missing work, school look at these people all excited this lady on the sidewalk, she is wiping tears that was cool guys.
