is wonderful for locals this is an exhibit you want to come back to why? you never get tired of seeing iconic items like plymouth rock that is a fragment of the rock pilgrims landed on in 1620 doesn't get more impressive than that, but also you will want to come back because they are going to have some of their new acquisitions, items on loan that will be here for a temporary amount of time, like a chute worn by -- a suit worn by benjamin franklin in 1778. here to talk with us is richard barton. he had the task the daunting task of i guess coming up, with a way to present this, and conserve it all at the same time conservation, conservation that is the key word. >> that's right that is the key word that is right we did conserve this object, it needed very little treatment but needed more mounting and how we mounted this, let me step back
9:45 am
and say previous curators had examined the physiology of how men stood and in the 18th century and realized they stood with shoulders match more in advanced position and made a fiber glass mount for it, fiber glass is no longer appropriate now we are using archival material, that will last and preserve the suit. >> so the people understand at home what we are talking about you get this amazing item on loan, from massachusetts s you want to put it in this display but need to come up with a display all while handling it as little as possible so you need to know what it is going to look like without touching it really. >> yes, exactly what we did for that, because this this surface is fragile but the suit is stable the construction is stable, so what we did, we hired a 18th century costume expert an expert in men's costumes he came in, measured the costume, made a pattern,
9:46 am
from the pattern, we then made a new mount, following the old mount that is what i have here, here is the material we used, this is the old fiber glass mount, with our costume conservatory, taking measurements, cutting at the foam which is archival foam, and you can see, this is the layers put together, and then she carves it,. >> then really practices you have like you said, a fake pattern so to speak of the suit, practice make sure it is perfect. >> when you put the real one on. >> it fits exactly. >> least amount of handling necessary. >> as a conservatory when you are at that moment putting it on and seeing it on display, what is the satisfaction like? >> you are doing all the work taking measurements, handling the suit as little as possible and then, you put it on and it fits perfectly just the way you want it to.
9:47 am
>> you are relieved the biggest emotion is relief. >> when you see it, it is right next to a walking cane, benjamin franklins many people haven't seen but when you are talking conservation there is all different things you thing about people don't understand from the dark carpet to low lighting all of that is a part of preserving these special things. >> yes, exhibit design helps preserve objects that is how we display them of course that effects light levels, design of the exhibit, so, things might appear dark, we are preserving the artifacts but giving you a good experience. >> mm-hmm. >> seeing objects. >> let's walk over here you have a couple other things you all have worked on as a conservatory when you are handling these amazing things, i guess it is a bit nerve wracking. >> well, -- >> it is on your watch. >> it is on our watch but we are trained all of us have gone through graduate program, and have at least 20 years

experience,. >> is that all? two decades. >> one of us has more than that, so -- >> here is a manifest, from a slave ship which is pretty amazing just real quickly tell me about conserving this. >> well, here is a before image of the object, and it had tears, cracks, the paper was brittle, the back well, here is some more images you could see tears at the bottom, tears in the middle, how it is crinkled, not on a plane, still isn't but smoother. >> woe could talk about this forever most importantly thank you for the work you do, all of us not only here in the dc area but from all over the world can enjoy these amazing artifacts. >> thank you holly looks great.
