shoulder, one world trade center it is interesting because this milestone comes nearly, a year after we learned of the death of osama bin laden. later on this afternoon the installation of steel beams at one world trade centre will propel that building, into rare fied air here in new york city it will become the tallest building in the city's skyline as you guys said, eclipsing the empire state building right now standing at 1,250 feet tall, a little bit of accounting here that does not count the broadcast tower on top of the empire building which adds 203 or so feet to the top of the empire state building but most people don't factor in antennas when figuring on the height of a building but there it is, one world trade centre many years in the making as you guys know and once it is all said and done that building just behind me will stand at 1,776 feet

7:36 am
watched senate races, in the fall, in the country, but george alan, has a primary challenge that he still has to get past and he is facing three challengers all from the right, all pretty much espousing the tea party's opinions, and he has to get through three debates before he presumably as most people expect, wins the nomination and then goes up against cain this was the first of those three debates. >> in this debate you felt he acquittalled himself well. >> yes, i thought he basically escaped pretty much without any serious damage, in a couple ways, first of all there were no gap, you know, he didn't say anything that will get him in trouble. remember he lost the senate seat, in 2006 after the famous, comment which hurt him a lot in the general election there was nothing like that but then also, i was rather surprised actually i mean these tea party people you know are usually pretty aggressive and george
7:37 am
alan someone they really have their eye on, i mean they see him as an example of what is wrong with the republican party, because when he was in the senate from 2001 to 2007, he voted for a lot of spending increases and a lot of increases in the depth debt and this is exact -- debt and this is exactly what alien ates the right wing and super fiscally conservative wing of the republican party these challengers in this debate weren't that aggressive two of the candidates, didn't even mention him by name, and then the other one, jamie who is the former head, of the state tea party, federation, she was more aggressive but even she only mentioned him twice by name and i thought he basically, had a defense, of his past position, and i thought he basically got away, pretty much on scathed. >> his defense was, a lot of those spending increases that he voted for, came in the wake of 9/11. >> right defense and security
7:38 am
and also he said the deficit is much bigger in the house, and so he couldn't possibly vote to raise the debt ceiling now, unless there were really strict spending caps, really strict spending controls, then he might be willing to do it. before when he voted to increase the deficit it wasn't as bad as it is now. >> the fact that the other three candidates in the primary against him are more to the right, more conservative, more physically conservative is that going to force him to move in that direction somewhat? >> i think it has pushed him to the right, already and i think that was evident in a couple ways not in the debate so much but last summer when you know the big debate over whether or not to raise the debt ceiling, the huge crisis in washington last summer, george alan was under a lot of pressure from the tea party people to say what he would do if he were in the senate he said basically he would have voted against the
7:39 am
compromised package that ultimately ended the crisis and prevented the united states from going into default a lot of conservative republicans voted for that compromise, eric cantor the house majority leader from virginia, he voted for that compromise but george alan because of the pressure from these primary challengers said he would not have voted for that compromise i would expect we will be hearing about that, in the general election, from -- general election from the democrats when they criticize alan assuming he wins in june. >> now folks who may have wanted to watch this debate were not really able to. it was limited -- it wasn't really on tv. >> it was live streamed by one of the roanoke television stations there are strict limits on this debate and i think part of that was because the republican establishment wants to down play attention, because they don't want -- they
7:40 am
are basically expecting alan to win and don't want alan to get beaten up too much in public, before he goes for the main event against cain it was live streamed by this one roanoke tv station we only learned it would be live streamed fairly late then copies of the tape, were given to all four campaigns and they can do with the tape as they like, so maybe one of them will release it and everybody will be able to see what happened but i thought the main problem from my point of view with the debate was that the questioners, only one was from the media the rest were republican party officials. the questioning was lame they asked a lot of softball questions they asked questions on issues where they all agreed everybody sort of agreed they were against same-sex marriage they all agreed they had to do something about social security but had to protect it. there wasn't enough probing of
7:41 am
what the actual differences were except in the first question, which was about raising the debt limit and another interesting thing none of them would openly enthusiastically endorse mitt romney, as the republican nominee because you know the tea party they are very luke warm about romney he is too moderate so the three tea party people none of them said they were ready to endorse romney yet and alan said he wasn't ready to formerly endorse him although he looked forward to working with him he was awkward about the romney thing. >> robert thanks. >> good to see you. >> allison. >> 7:41 a.m., 51 degrees on monday morning a divorce case turns ugly more than a decade later details of a murder for hire plot. >> festival celebrating children's day went terribly wrong in mexico why hundreds of kids ended up in hospital. we will be right back
