house. what president obama and mitt romney are doing to sway virginia voters their way. >> many questions lingering around the case of a chinese activist at the center of a diplomatic standoff between china and the united states. word this morning that china is budging. fox5 morning news at 7:00 starts right now. there is a live look outside. you can already tell it's going to be a summery day. the sun is up. it's warm. i believe the humidity is up there as well. this is friday, may 4th, 2012. good morning, i'm tony perkins. >> and i'm alison seymour. already 66 degrees on this nice warm friday morning. and it's friday. almost 90 degrees, tucker barnes, did i hear you say that earlier? good morning. >> good morning. yeah. it's going to be close. well into the 80s today and a lot of humidity. summertime air mass here to stay for at least one more day. let's look at our current

temperature at reagan national, 66 degrees. humidity, 87%. plenty of water out there in the atmosphere. winds, none out of the north now at zero miles per hour. earlier they were out of the south. few showers and thunderstorms overnight. now we're focused on a cold front which is to our north and west. towards chicago and st. louis, that will roll in here later this afternoon and tonight and with that change of air mass we're likely to see thunderstorms develop, and some could be on the strong side. most of the day partly sunny. mid- to late afternoon, potential for strong storms around here and again, with the potential for heavy rain with some of those storms. forecast for today, we've done this the last couple of days, mid-80s later this afternoon with a scattered storm by 4:00 p.m. the weekend looks good. i'll have those details in a couple of minutes. let's do traffic this morning with julie wright. on the roads this morning you'll find the lanes are open

traveling the beltway. however, we have problems to report, accident activity on the ramp from the outer loop of the beltway to exit at kennel worth avenue. involving a motorcyclist. ramp is partially blocked to go northbound on kennelworth avenue. traveling southbound 95 or on the baltimore washington parkway, lanes open, no problems out of laurel. southbound 29 at new hampshire avenue, this is causing major tieups traveling southbound this morning trying to work out from stewart lane towards the accident scene. improves out to trader joe's. no problems on the beltway from university boulevard towards 270. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. thank you very much. our top story this morning involves dramatic developments from china regarding a blind

activist. today the chinese government said they would allow chen to study abroad. this is seen as the most positive step yet in the ongoing tension. chen remains in a beijing hospital two days after leaving the u.s. embassy. he says he's not being allowed to see u.s. officials and gets cut off when he talks with them by phone. chen spoke today with the associated press telling them his situation is very dangerous. the journey on the presidential campaign officially kicks off tomorrow, even though the candidates have been acting like it started months ago. >> virginia is becoming more of a key battleground contest. romney was there yesterday, picking up the endorsement of congresswoman michele bachmann, and the president is in northern virginia this morning. we get more from sherri ly live where the president will be in

arlington. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. as you mentioned, it seems like they have been campaigning for a while, though this isn't an official campaign event for the president. but clearly his appearance at a school here in arlington is an indicator of how important virginia is in the race for president. the president is hoping to take virginia. he took it in 2008 and he is leading the presumed gop nominee mitt romney in polls here. today the president will speak to high school students in arlington, talking about the need for an affordable college education and keeping the federal student loan interest rates down. it's a state romney knows is important, too. yesterday the former massachusetts governor met with virginia's governor to talk about energy and the economy, while picking up the

endorsement of michele bachmann. mcdonald has been mentioned as a possible running mate. >> this president has not always taken care of veterans, not always made the best decisions for the military, has cut our investments in defense. you're going to see a change in our support for military and veterans in mitt romney. >> this is time for the military and people who care about american strength to vote for a change in washington that removes this president and put someone in that will keep america strong, and i will. >> reporter: today's event at the high school is not open to the public. the president as well as the secretary of education will hold a round table first with some junior and seniors here and their parents to talk about the student loan interest rates. then he will address the entire junior and senior class here. to show you just how important

virginia is in the presidential election, tomorrow president barack obama will kick off his re-election campaign in richmond. that's the latest in arlington, back to you. >> sherri ly reporting, thank you very much. to our other top stories this morning, tragedy strikes inside a church in howard county. police say they found two women shot yesterday evening inside an office at the st. paul's episcopal church in ellicott city. one of the victims died from her wounds. the other one is in critical condition. neighbors are feeling unsettled they say by this discovery. >> my thought was that a shooter is on the loose, then it sounded like it was, you know, a murder-suicide from what i was hearing. but then of course my thoughts went to it must be the people that i see coming and going out of there. >> police believe the suspected gunman did shoot and kill himself. they are still trying to figure out the relationship between the three people involved here. a juror says she wants out

of the trial of five men accused in one of the district's bloodiest mass shootings. juror number 16 sent a note to the judge saying she was feeling intense pressure to change her mind. the judge says he will not excuse people over a disagreement. five men on trial are accused in a series of shootings in 2010 that left five people dead and nine wounded on south capitol street. this is a disturbing story to report this morning. a little baby in northern virginia is recovering after being attacked by the family dog. culpepper county sheriff's officials say the boy was bitten more than 30 times by a jack russell terrier. this happened tuesday evening as the baby was in its bassinet. the boy's father reportedly came home from work to find the dog biting the child. he shot and killed the dog

before deputies got on the scene. a principal is in trouble with the law. police say she embezzled more than $8,000 from the school in woodbridge. investigators say she used her school issued credit card to buy personal items. she's now on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. former d.c. council member harry thomas, jr. is going to jail for three years for stealing from the city. federal investigators are also continuing to look into other investigations of several d.c. leaders, including mayor gray and council member brown. all eyes on the april jobs report due out next hour. investors remain cautious, and doug luzader takes a closer

look at what we can expect to see from the numbers. >> reporter: economists think we added around 160,000 jobs last month. that is headed in the right direction, but it's not expected to change the unemployment rate. will the celebration continue today? you don't have to look further than the white house's cinco de mayo event. >> that's why we've worked hard to create jobs. >> reporter: even here, the president was talking jobs. [ bell ringing ] >> reporter: the markets weren't too happy yesterday. the dow fell 62 points after very mixed signals. jobless claims were lower than expected last month. that's good news, but big retailers reported sluggish sales and that hurts hiring. >> the economy is not growing quickly. 2.2% gdp growth. as long as productivity stays at a similar level, that 2, 3% level, companies don't need to

hire as many people. >> reporter: if hiring doesn't pick up fast, month after month that could be a problem for the president's re-election hopes. >> the guy who promised he'd keep unemployment below 8% has not been under 8% since. a guy who promised he'd make things better and now we have 23 million americans out of work. >> reporter: if the numbers are weak today, it could be in part due to the weather. economists think the warm winter inflated job creation earlier in the year and that may have stolen some of spring's thunder. in washington, doug luzader, fox news. still ahead, a heads up if you plan on riding the rails this weekend. >> if you take the bus, metro wants to hear from you. the agency is looking to consolidate some stops, but wants input from riders before they make changes. how you can weigh in next. >> plus, this being called the trial of the century. more on the case folks across

turn, improve on time performances. but riders aren't so sure it's a great idea. >> i don't think that's good, though. i think it's good how it is, 'cause you got these older people, that will make it bad for them. >> i think that's not a good idea, because basically people will have to walk a long distance and that's not a good thing at all. >> metro officials also think reducing the number of stops will mean more efficient fuel and maintenance costs. you can find information about the meetings on myfoxdc.com. getting around on metro this weekend could be a little tricky. that's because both the nats and the caps play at home and construction is also planned. starting tonight at 10:00, four green line stations will be closed. as for after the games, metro will run extra gap trains to help move crowds out of gallery place and navy yard stations.

beltway, you are starting to slow leaving the john hansen highway heading to the accident scene at kennelworth. outer loop closed 95 around georgia avenue. southbound 29 at new hampshire avenue, three-car accident. once you get south of the accident, the pace improves. traveling the inner loop of the beltway, delays braddock road to 66, eastbound route 7 before idlewood and towards marshal drive, accident activity has eastbound lanes closed. outer loop of the beltway, not busy leaving university boulevard headed around bethesda. that's a check of your fox 5 traffic. last words of osama bin laden are available for anyone to see on the internet. documents seized in the u.s. raid that killed the terror master mind show he was focused

up until the end on attacking americans. but he also worried about bumbling going on inside his terror network. his letters indicate he was upset at the inability of spinoff terror groups to win public support for their cause. another painful chapter is set to begin for the families of those killed on 9/11. >> one of the alleged master minds of the attacks and his four coconspirators will have their day in court. >> the men will head off to an arraignment hearing tomorrow and at the same time, victims' relatives will gather at military bases along the east coast to watch it play out. khalid shaikh mohammed is finally heading to court, more than a decade later he and his four accused coconspirators

will face charges. the case was delayed when the obama administration decided it wanted to try them in the u.s. congress fourth the effort, forcing the president to go against his plan to close the detention center in guantanamo bay. >> how is the world going to perceive the trial? i think that's where there's real debate on the benefits of the military commission versus federal court. >> military legal expert charles stemson says it will be complicated. >> it will be start, stop, start, symptom, because of the complex nature of this. >> they face counts of conspiracy, terrorism and more and murder. colonel davis is a former military prosecutor. he says one of the challenges

george washington university hospital is honoring national stroke awareness month which started tuesday. today the medical staff is offering free stroke screenings. evaluations will start at 8:00 and last until 1:00 p.m. they're being held outside the foggy bottom metro station on the gw plaza. nurses and doctors will provide information to help lower stroke risk and save lives ultimately. strokes, which are known as the silent killer, are the third leading cause of death in the united states. a record donation to the smithsonian means new digs for

the dinos. david koch has given $35 million. it will be used to build a new dinosaur hall. the current exhibit would close in 2014 with the new space set to open in 2019. during renovation, some fossils will go on display in other parts of the museum. here's one that will have you shaking your head. it seems nato needs to do its homework. >> talking about chicago, where nato will host a summit in more than two weeks. yesterday they released a promotional video about chicago, and in it it said chicago is the capital of illinois. the video also said the person for whom the convention center where the summit is being held was named founded the chicago tribune. nope. three other guys did that. and it also claims president obama grew up in chicago. we know that's wrong again. the president spent his early days in hawaii and indonesia

[ laughter ] on the roads this morning, what you will find is we have accident activity that continues to block the ramp from the outer loop of the beltway to kenilworth avenue. on going investigation and this ramp from the outer loop is closed. we have the flashing lights causing a distraction. beltway itself is open, but it will slow leading 50 to john hansen highway. here at braddock road, 32 miles per hour. the crash eastbound route 7 inside of the beltway has cleared. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic.

more than three years in prison, that's how long former d.c. councilman harry thomas junior will spend behind bars. he pleaded guilty back in january to embezzling $350,000 earmarked for the youth sports programs. joining us this morning liz farmer who has been covering the trial and other council news. you've written really eye opening articles about what goes on in council chambers. first, let's talk about harry thomas, jr. were you surprised with the sentence? it could have been lower. this judge had some room to make it a lower time, but he didn't do that. >> no, he didn't. and throughout, you know, i could feel myself trying to guess what's it going to be throughout the proceeding. i think a lot of us had the sense he wouldn't go as far as prosecutors wanted, which was almost four years, but would definitely get more than the 18

months thomas's attorneys requested, and he leaned much more towards the four years. it's three years and two months, which is more than twice as much as his attorneys wanted. i don't think it's necessarily a surprising sentence. what was interesting though is the judge's demeanor and attitude about, he kept saying the word betrayal a lot of the time. and he seemed to want to make an example out of thomas. >> do you think it was the amount of money, do you think it was where the money was supposed to go? what do you think was the deciding factor in that attitude you speak of? >> well, you know, this is a guess, but i do think the fact that thomas stole from programs he claimed to be a champion of, and the judge several times noted the irony of that, and the fact it's kids, it's something prosecutors hammered home when they reasoned their sentence out. the judge seemed to agree with that. he said the fact that these were needy children really spoke to how severe thomas's crime was. >> this isn't something that

the former councilman could do alone. the money came from somewhere. he was in partnership with other people, whether they knew or not where that money was going. my question is is anybody else waiting and nervous and wringing their hands today? >> no one will say that publicly, but there's got to be. the children and youth -- i'm blanking on the name, but the trust thomas used, the city run nonprofit, the trust he used to funnel money to that, back to himself, that's still under investigation by the feds and the city is still looking into it. some people there who have been forced to resign or forced to move on, resign from their city jobs. i would not be surprised if people behind closed doors are really concerned about where they're at. >> might not be over yet, the fallout from this. in court yesterday thomas's mom came up and spoke and really said they had had like a meeting mom and son, and really

talked about what it meant for their family and the shame. but she also asked for mercy. thomas himself spoke and he apologized. tell us about the sort of mood when all that was going on. did it feel sincere, what do you think? >> that was actually really very -- i'm not sure if touching is the right word. especially when thomas's mom was up there, i think everybody's heart broke for her. no mother wants to do that for her child. i think the judge really appreciated what she had to say. he took what she said to heart. he thanked her and he recognized her for being a pillar in her community. and thomas's testimony, unlike his plea hearing, which i felt he didn't have the right attitude there, he seemed remorseful. the judge seemed to believe him. i believed he regretted his actions. >> would love to talk to you more about what the council is doing now with -- has their behavior changed, but we're out of time.

making headlines, police in memphis arrested two 18-year- olds after a pair of home made bombs exploded at their high school. the bomb threat was called into the school before noon

yesterday. after the threat, staff members heard a loud noise and saw fumes. authorities say it appeared the two students planned a prank bombing that got out of hand. no one was seriously hurt. it was a chaotic scene in ohio last fall. dozens of exotic animals set free by their owner who then killed himself. today that man's widow will get some of those animals back. the zoo plans to return two leopards, two primates and a bear to marion thompson. the five animals are just a few that had been survived. authorities were forced to kill 48 of the other wild animals. america's tallest man has a larger than life problem. finding shoes that fit. but now thanks to reebok, he'll no longer have that issue. after cramming his feet into the same shoes the past six years, he mentioned online he was in the market for new foot wear. that's when reebok stepped in offering to make him a custom

presumed republican nominee mitt romney by 7 points. the president took virginia in 2008 and a changing political environment has made this a swing state. in arlington today the president will speak with high school juniors and seniors about the need to keep interest rates down on student loans so they can have an opportunity at an affordable college education. he goes to richmond, virginia tomorrow. romney is taking his campaign to the commonwealth and former rival michele bachmann endorsed him yesterday. he got a boost with virginia's governor, who has been mentioned as a possible running mate. they were talking about energy and the economy, both major issues in this campaign. >> no question about energy having gotten more expensive under this president and part of that is because of his policies. >> he'll make clear, continually, it's his strong conviction it is the wrong thing to do for our economy to adopt the policies that got us into this mess.

rubio are the top two choices for vice presidential candidate for romney. chris wallace joins us this morning. good morning, how are you? >> good morning. i think it's fair to say rubio -- look, in the end it's not a popularity contest. romney will make the decision by himself. but i think he's the clear favorite at this point to be romney's running mate. he excites the base. he's young, he's articulate. he has star power that perhaps romney doesn't. of course, he would be the first hispanic-american on a national ticket. and hispanics will play a big role that voting block in this election. >> that is key it seems to me in terms of the role he may play in attracting the hispanic vote. is he going to open up and talk about this? i know they don't like to talk about it, all the speculation beforehand. >> i don't think he's going to say, yeah, i want it desperately or romney has asked me, no. i very much doubt that.

together, a huge deal. all of the films, thor, captain america, have been huge successes, even iron man making over $600 million world wide. they come together. they have to save the world. >> he was in the thor movie. >> right, he was the bad guy in thor. assembles the avengers. >> with all these characters and sometimes it's hard to bring a bunch of superstars together and make a good plot, does that work in this movie? >> here's the problem, and i say this because there's a lot of great action and i'll get to that. but the plot line is too convoluted. they try to do too much with the characters, specifically black widow and hawk eye. they're nowhere near the level of iron man, hulk, captain america. when they cut to those scenes, i'm like, i don't care.

stop giving us back story on black widow. there are scenes where they'll cut to an iron man, hulk action scene and cut to arrow shooting. dude, doesn't feel like an ironman. i'm not saying arrow shooting is bad. doesn't feel like a super hero power. >> talk about the action. >> wheaten has created some of the most epic action i've ever seen in a film. there is one seven-second shot that is worth the entire price of admission. a seven-second shot. and another 30-sec continuous action i love. this is really hulk's movie. i feel like it should have been called the hulk. he was born to play this role. >> better than the previous two. >> pummels edward norton and lou ferrigno. he plays the character with such subtlety but with epic
