7:36 am
key states you never know how the math of the electoral college will work out in may elections in november but it is clear virginia is key, keep in mind one fact, virginia, the 50 states was actually closest to the national picture in 2008, obama got close to 53% of the national vote, virginia gave him 52.6 that was closer to the national result that any other states that is really unprecedented for virginia, believe me they used to be an out wire in presidential elections. >> and so let's talk about how things have changed since 2008 how has the landscape in virginia shifted if it has at all. >> well, if it shifted, it shifted in two contradictory ways the first is changes that have transformed virginia, from that -- what it used to be a heavily republican state, presidential level to competitive state, those
7:37 am
changes demographic changes have continued especially in northern virginia, if anything, the climate is more favorable for president obama, than it was in 2008, but, the national climate, the national economy, is less favorable, so i would expect virginia to be closer and much more competitive in 2012 than it was in 2008, just like this national election will be this will be a close competitive election, and i think people are going to sew that as we move into the -- see that as we move into the fall campaign. >> what does the president have to do if he wants to win gin yeah. >> well, he is doing the organize -- virginia,. >> well he recollects is doing the organizational things he has over a dozen offices set up some have been operating for many months if not years he is going to spend a lot of money here he picked virginia as one of the two states to launch his re-election campaign. but the truth is, he is going to have to hope for better economic numbers if he is going

to carry virginia and the nation a lot of this veally out of his hands we never like to think of elections as being a product of luck and chance and circumstance but this may be one of them. >> all right how about mitt romney , what does he need to do, to broaden his appeal to virginia voters. >> he needs to consolidate first the republican vote in gin yeah you may remember -- virginia, you may remember there was an unhappy republican primary. only romney and ron paul were on the ballot and romney didn't even get 60% of the vote running against ron paul that tells you something but i have to say because the focus is on the incumbent because as usual it is a referendum on the incumbent president republicans have gathered around romney in virginia and nationally, much faster than democrats expected there has been a consolidation of the republican vote not because they like romney, but
7:39 am
because they dislike president obama. does -- if romney were to name bob mcdonald as his running mate would that help him in virginia? >> i've seen three surveys, all three public opinion polls from very different pollsters have shown the very same thing bob mcdonald adds nothing i mean nothing it surprised me i expected him to add what a vice presidential candidate normally adds to a presidential candidate usually you get about 2, 3% in the home state you don't get that nationally but you get a bump in the home state, not here. it may be because of what happened recently in the general assembly session that was a very controversial session and it took a big chunk out of governor mcdonald's popularity rating. >> all right very very interesting, we are going to keep our eyes very much focused on virginia.
