well, it is the big story, historic announcement from president obama. he is the first sitting president to come out in support of same-sex marriage rights. the president said over the years that his personal feelings about gay marriage have been evolving. his shift in support, was influenced in large part by members of his administration in committed same-sex marriages. the contentious issue will likely be an issue in the race for the white house. >> 50% of americans do support the legalization of same-sex marriage. 48% against it. mitt romney did not directly criticize president obama for his gay marriage but did reiterate he opposes it. >> my view is that marriage itself, is a relationship between a man and a woman that is my own preference. other people have their own views. this is a tender and sensitive

a part of me thinks joe biden sent this out as a trial balloon or to run interference. clearly the two men have talked about this issue. this has been a topic of conversation at the obama dinner table. this is a major cultural issue they were going to have to take a stand on because evolving is not enough way to sort of commit yourself on an issue of justice and fairness. >> lenny good to see you. appreciate it. allison. 9:09 a.m., thank you tony. coming up two standing ovations on american idol as the final four belt out songs they wish they had written. one contestant didn't do too well. idol panel weighs in on who did well and who will likely go home, right after the break. we will be right back
