7:35 am
called "the baby book." he has three tenants of attachment parenting and they are this nursing on demand, basically, regard of his of the age of a child. and also wearing your baby, holding your baby close to you with the slings as long as that can happen. and also cosleeping or having the child in the bed with the parents. when you hear those three -- let's start with the cosleeping. i've always heard that this could be pretty detrimental to a child in their normal development. what do you think about that tenant? >> you know, all these things relate to really what you have to consider of a primitive culture. when you look at our evolution and the way we live thousands of millenia of years ago, you have to expect people literally had their babies attached to them, because you didn't have places or situations to leave your baby behind. it would be dangerous. cosleeping was a natural and expected experience.
7:36 am
and you could keep your baby quiet while the animals roamed outside the cave, whatever that might be. and breast feeding, that was the most natural and certainly by nature the normal way to feed a baby. as long as you could, you would. teeth come in much later and you couldn't create a feeding pattern. these are things steeped in our basic history as humans. when you look at them, for instance, cosleeping, i think cosleeps is something that's natural, it's a very individual choice, certainly personality of the parents. the nature and temperament of the baby, that delivers a lot of influence on whether you choose to do that. it can be a fairly hazard in the first months of life. >> we've done those stories. >> in my own practice in the last few years, we lost two
7:37 am
babies cosleeping. one was found wrapped in a pillow and dead in the morning. the other one, the mom rolled over on the baby during the night, unaware, and that caused the demise of that child. really, really devastating and terrible situation. if people want to cosleep, they have to be careful and understand the risks and understand there are certain conditions they have to set up in their bed and bedroom so they don't put themselves and child at risk. >> understood your point that time magazine is selling issues, copies. but the question is, are you mom enough? when a mom comes in who hasn't slinged, used the sling all of her infancy with the baby, if a mom hasn't nursed until they're two, the question is, are you mom enough? as a pediatrician, what's the answer to your parents that come in? >> my role is not to judge, but to help guide people in their
7:38 am
lifestyle, in their personality choices. what works for them. sometimes it's a partner that makes it inconvenient or impossible. sometimes it's a job. many people have to go back to work within a couple of months of delivering a baby. it makes the whole process a very, very individual choice, individual needs. some babies are very easy. they are easily fall into a schedule. they'll sleep well, eat predictbly. there's not a problem for the parent to have to accommodate that situation. other babies are more demanding. they really require a more interactive and supportive and on-touch type of a mom. there are lots of variabilities there. >> our time is fleeting, unfortunately. let me just ask you this question, are we damaging our hurting the child, basically, if we sort of set up this precident that you're always going to be here with mom, you're going to get your milk
7:39 am
from mom? >> i don't think you can say it that way. limit setting has been a problem in our society. that's when you start to breach the boundaries of what is good for a child developmentally. i think there are a lot of pluses, probably way more pluses than negative in being responsive and accommodating to the needs of your baby. >> there's so much more to talk about. unfortunately, we to cram it into these four minutes. we appreciate your insight. >> thank you. >> come back any time. this is dr. russell libby. very interesting stuff, tony. >> really is. thank you much. it's 7:39 now. coming up, prince charles the weather man? we have his debut coming up. it's the real thing. >> as more states move to pass laws against texting while driving, a new jersey town is taking it a step further. >> we want to tell you about a
