victory lapse. by the time he got to george clooney's house for the main event, he had stopped in seattle, where voters will weigh in on gay marriage later this year. >> and here in washington you'll have the chance to make your voice heard on the issue of making sure that everybody, regardless of sexual orientation, is treated fairly. you will have a chance to weigh in on this. >> reporter: outside of these kinds of events, the reception to the president's new stand is more complicated in a country that is just about evenly divided when it comes to gay marriage. the washington post raised eyebrows about the timing of its latest story on mitt romney, describing an alleged incident when he was a high school student, where witnesses say he forcibly cut the hair of a fellow student who some believed was gay. romney didn't deny it, but said sexual orientation would not have been the issue. >> this is no question but that i did some stupid things when i was in high school. and obviously if i hurt anyone

by virtue of that, i would be very sorry for it and apologize for it. >> reporter: mitt romney is going to quickly try to pivot back to the economy, which he thinks is his strong suit heading into november. he'll do that today in north carolina. tony and allison? >> doug, thank you very much. more now on that romney bullying claim that doug talked about. the family of that alleged hazing victim is speaking out against the claims made by the "post." they cast doubts on the accuracy of the story and in a statement they say -- both romney and president obama will be on the campaign trail today talking about the economy. a new poll shows the economy remains the president's biggest challenge. the associated press survey found 52% of people disapprove of the president's handling of the economy. 65% say they are disappointed in his handling of gas prices. both numbers are up from the

ap's last poll, which was three months ago. the first lady is giving a commencent address at virginia tech this afternoon. michelle obama will be joined by virginia senator mark warner. both will deliver speeches to about 5,000 students starting at noon. the first lady then heads to speaking engagements at north carolina a&t university. making headlines this friday, the search for a man put on the fbi's most wanted list just this week in connection with a bizarre murder and abduction case is over. police say adam mays shot himself to death yesterday after he was surrounded by a swat team in mississippi. mays was accused of killing joanne bane, along with her eldest daughter two weeks ago, before kidnapping her two youngest daughters. police say the girls are safe. they were taken to a hospital for observation. mays' wife is already in jail on murder charges related to this case.

a metro employee fired after last month's derailment on the blue line. the agency says it's standard procedure to check the closure before resuming service. a drug bust in laurel, maryland, is one of the biggest pot busts in howard county history. he's a former crime lab worker, and accused of operating a grow lab in his home. people who walked their dogs say they always smelled marijuana over the fence at all hours of the. the first drug that could block the hiv infection endorsed. truvada is already used as a treatment. now the fda is approving it as a preventive treatment. the fda doesn't have to take the panel's advice, though it

some don't, but most do. i've been dead broke and made money. the more you make, the more you pay in taxes. in california, adds up to about 50%, and then you have deductions. this thing with warren buffet saying he's paying less taxes than his secretary, it's false. he's paying 18% of salary, he's paying 15% on capital gains. you can go on youtube, with charles gibson and obama about this capital gains. gibson said, listen, when he's running for president, to obama, well, you want to raise capital gains tax. they found when it was higher there was less tax revenue. you'd think it would be the other way around. but it wasn't. why do you want to raise it? he goes, it will create less tax revenue. he goes, i know, but in the name of fairness. it's like, it's a bad idea, because there's going to be less investment and less jobs and less work. >> you've thought it --

"time" magazine's latest cover is grabbing a lot of attention. and much debate on parenting. >> cover photo shows a mother, a real mother, nursing her three and a half-year-old son who is standing on a chair. the caption reads, "are you mom enough"? the article talks about attachment parenting, the method promoted in a book that came out about dr. sears. it promoting breast feeding on demand, among other things. earlier i talked to a doctor who said whether it works varies depending on the parent and the child. >> my role is not to judge, but help guide people in their lifestyle, personality choices. have to come from their heart,

what works for them. sometimes it's a partner that makes it inconvenient or impossible. sometimes it's a job. many people have to go back to work within a couple of months of delivering a baby. it makes the whole process a very, very individual choice, individual needs. some babies are very easy. they are easily -- fall into a schedule, they'll sleep well, eat predictably. there's not a problem for the parents to have to accommodate that situation. but other babies are more demanding. they really require a much more interactive and supportive and ontouch time of a mom. >> dr. libby says one of the biggest positives about attachment parents is it does encourage parents to be responsive to their baby. but it's really controversial. >> i think it's controversial because, you know, we're not just talking about babies here. we're talking about toddlers or beyond in some cases. >> right. >> three, four, five, six years

♪ it's the end of the road, idol road, for holly cavanaugh, the texas teenager who captured america's attention with her powerful voice and unique accent was sent home last night. she'll be on the idol tour this summer, of course. first, she is joining us live from l.a. this morning to talk about her journey. good morning to you. holly, good to see you. >> good morning. thank you. >> this journey, though, some contestants, like joshua, he came back, too. i specifically remember you from the first time you tried out and you got so far. can you telewhat you're feeling today about your experience? >> i'm feeling really good.

i'm feeling really proud of myself. i watched it back last night, and i mean, i honestly could be happier. i really cannot complain. top four was a big accomplishment for me, so i really can't sit here and say oh, i'm sad. as much as i wanted to be at that finale, i've come so far in a matter of months. so i'm really happy and really thankful. >> we enjoyed your talent so much and saw you getting more comfortable. but that was one of the criticisms, it was like you never perhaps connected as much as maybe you would liked to have with the audience. do you accept that criticism? what do you think about it? >> i mean, yeah, i think there's sometimes, especially with my last performance with "i can't make you love me," i definitely felt that song, and i love that song. but it's one thing when i feel it. i have to make everyone else feel it, and i think that's where the connection wasn't made. i didn't make everybody else feel it as much as i did.

but i definitely don't regret that song. and i love that song, and i think each week i started getting more comfortable and, you know, started connecting more and singing for the love of it. >> you have a beautiful voice. speaking of voices, we said it in the introduction there, can you explain the difference with being a texas teenager and having your european accent? tell us about that history a little bit. >> it's an interesting one. i was born in england, but i've been here for 11 years, so it's not as strong as it used to be. when i'm around my family, it's like really, really stronger, any english person it's stronger. that's the mystery behind that one. >> we enjoy it and you on the show. the tour is coming up. what happens now between the tour, finale and the tour? do you stay in los angeles? >> yeah. i'm not going home any time

>> thank you, viewer, for writing in. it's much more complicated. we've been in contact for several weeks, i want you to know that i appreciate you sending in this question. the viewer did go on to tell me that she contacted the salon, which was my original advice. first, don't go a legal route and all that. try to talk to them. but it comes down to sort of a he say, she say sort of deal. which i knew that was going to be hard. that was going to be my advice. she did that. they went on to offer her treatment at their place or elsewhere. but she had to sign a nonliability affidavit so the salon could have it on file. since then they've been not as responsive. at the end of the day, i say take the treatments and move forward emotionally and mentally, viewer. i would get a second opinion on what's needed to repair the

damage, along with an estimate from another salon as well. about the document, at the end of the day, get the treatment and sign it. if they give you more resistance, then at that point you might have to seek a legal option or have legal counsel call the salon on your behalf. but for right now, that is what i would do. now, viewer, i also phoned a friend to give you further advice about moving on. joining me today is diane stevens from cole stevens salon. a friend of the show. good to see you. >> good to see you. >> you deal with natural hair and how to make the transition. this viewer did this and was enjoying this big head of hair, and all of a sudden this happened. let me ask you, is it possible that something could have been put in her hair that would make it shed or come out like she says it has? >> sure. there's quite a few factors. of course, the first thing is

what's going on internallally with her? doesn't sound like she has internal problems like hormonal. >> but it could. >> it could, right. >> then there's environmentally. >> in this you start going into -- then you start going into chemicals. that can cause concern for shedding and damage. they could have potentially used a chemical. but more than likely, because i was listening to your words, and said she had it straightened, pressed i think that's the word she used. and thermal heat is usually the cause of many concerns. >> the same with the blow dryer? on this occasion she got it blown straight. >> thermal heat, as opposed to ceramic heat. a couple of times, this can. thermal heat is the best damage. because the other thing, especially with chemical, sometimes you have to just cut

it out. with thermal heat, there are some areas that you can improve. >> let's show, diane, the before and after picture. it's a little hard to see, because she still has, you know, the natural hair, which sometimes doesn't show well as like the straightened. but there she is before, and you can see that thick wavy hair. and there's the after picture. and you can clear see that the hairline and then the ponytail itself. moving forward, the salon did say that, and i did a little research, protein treatments, would it take about three or four treatments to get on the road? >> three or four treatments. protein will be great. that will strengthen her hair. using a clarifying shampoo will be wonderful. so many companies have a clarifying shampoo. then add moisture. when you get it strong,

moisturize. she'll have to wear her hair highly textured. different things like flex rods, permanent rod sets, those are great to get that curly hair back. and then continuing to trim, trim, trim, and treat. laying off the heat, especially thermal heat for a long while. >> my point, diane, was that it comes down to, well, i didn't do that. it's so sort of, i didn't give you that treatment, or who knows what happened. so to do this and to move on, because -- and she says, i am not my hair, and i like her positive attitude. but it is still, you know, what people see and so she does want to get that healthy head of hair back. that's my advice. >> perfect advice. before you get legal things involved, i would go back to the salon, have them continue to do my hair in a natural way with the flexy rods, whatever they can do for texture, and then continue to move on. >> diane, thank you so much. i will add to that, get the

end art and academics and they do service projects. they've done face painting and they help us our art shows and they're always there when we need a helping hand. they're doing our silk screening for tomorrow and shirts for us. they painted most of the banner for us. >> reporter: i love the fact, i guess this is supposed to be like chantilly lace, right? >> we did try to silk screen the lace, and it was a little too fine. we came up with a different pattern. but we sing chantilly lace at every football game, and every time we score a point at any sport event. so chantilly lace comes into our school quite often. >> reporter: you are doing a wonderful job. i want to check in with a couple of the kids here. tell me about this process. >> well, want to know how it's done and everything? >> reporter: in like 10 seconds.

>> there's a design, it's printed inside the pink screen. you get the paint and squeegee it through with this. like a stencil. it gets all the paint only in the areas you want. >> reporter: are you happy with how it's coming out? >> yeah, it actual turned out well. >> reporter: won't it be cool when you see people carrying it around? shirt crew, what's going on over here? >> we are tie dyeing shirts and we're going to land out the shirts -- hand out the shirts, too. >> reporter: tell me one of your favorite things about chantilly. >> that's a tough one. >> that is hard. well, i'm a senior here this year with luke and kylie. i like the different senior privileges we have. we get to leave early on fridays. >> reporter: it's always cool to rule the school, right? i got it. i'm going to check in with my ladies doing the ironing. you love ironing, right? >> of course. >> reporter: your parents are happy to see you do this. they have a load for you at
