island, maryland, with travel tips. >> sherri ly, are you there? >> reporter: i am here. forget the traveling, the sun is out. i'm going to stay here and soak it all in. tucker said it was going to burn off, and it has. the bad part is if you are heading to the beach, you are going to have to deal with the traffic. bay bridge over here, you can see the traffic is getting heavier. a lot heavier than a few hours ago. it will get worse. if you're heading out there, you're going to have a lot of company joining you in your misery in the traffic. about 875,000 people aaa estimates will be hitting the roads and the skies this memorial day weekend. the unofficial start to the summer. nine out of 10 of them are going to be on the roads. that means it's going to be awfully crowded. across the bay bridge, expecting about 300,000 vehicles to cross heading out to the beaches and maryland and delaware. the good news about all this,
9:07 am
though, if you are on the roads, the gas prices are dropping. the last seven weeks in d.c. now, the average price for a gallon of gas is $3.76. if you want to save a few bucks and you can get to maryland, it's $3.59. and starting out in virginia, that's the cheapest gas around at $3.47. in fact, it is more than 27 cents cheaper than memorial day weekend last year, another reason to head to the beach. >> the roads are going to be very crowded. with the weather forecast that we've got, hot, humid, 90 degrees, i think we're going to see a lot of people deciding to go, probably some of of those who didn't indicate they might be taking a vacation. >> reporter: a lot of those people who might be last-minute decision makers heading out to the beach. they're waiting on that forecast, waiting to see what it's going to be like. hear the low gas prices. you could have a lot of last minute people heading out to
9:08 am
the beach. the one thing aaa says, even though we're seeing more people traveling, a lot of people are pinching their pennies and looking for cheaper hotels, restaurant deals, that type of thing. and you could use that savings, because if you are heading across the bay bridge, folks, if you can remember, the toll went up to $4. that's a big change from the $2.50 last summer. that's the latest on kent island. back to you. >> a quick question, do you get to stay at the beach all weekend and report from there? >> reporter: you know, i might as well stay put, because i'll be back with you on memorial day. so you know, will they book me a hotel and can i buy new clothes? >> we'll check on that for you. thanks, sherri. coming up, his case put thousands of children on milk cartons and prompted a national missing children's day. coming up, more on the man who claims he killed etan patz. >> one foundation is working to

9:14 am
the national mainstream media. that's a big part when it comes to recovery, or at least closure for those families with these missing cases. black and missing not only works to increase awareness of these cases, but they work with the individual families to help them, because it can be expensive to go into try to find someone, putting up fliers. they help the families deal with the police and trying to find someone once they go missing. >> we're going to show a couple of photos, a few photos of some missing children from this area. you may be familiar with some of the cases. talk to me, though, a little bit about, i think efforts have improved, probably largely due to the efforts of the black and missing foundation, in terms of getting coverage for these children. why do you think there has been this disparity between coverage for white children who are missing and not so much for

children of color? >> well, as a journalist i've worked in several newsrooms across the country, and it's my assumption, there's been no official study of this, of why this happens, but what i've experienced is, there's just subconsciously no relationship to the faces when they see these faces of children of people of color, this is just no relationship. felicia barnes went missing in baltimore a year ago, and her case was a huge case. but basically, the baltimore police department told me how frustrated they were trying to get national coverage on this particular case. her case was really no different than that of natalee holloway's case, who gets coverage on a regular basis. >> pretty much had to beg for that coverage. they did ultimately get it. one of the things you work for is being proactive, not just reactive. can you tell me about that? >> yeah, because a lot of families do need to realize what they can do in advance.
9:16 am
for example, having a recent photograph of your child. having your child fingerprinted in advance. if they do go missing, you can have those things to hand over to authorities. knowing what your child is wearing. i know it may seem extreme, but knowing what your child is wearing. if they go missing, what did they have on? what did their hair look like? glasses, braces? the features that makes them stand out. if your child is young, knowing they know their full name, their address, how to use 911, if they're older and latch key kids, the safest way to walk to and from school. things like that can make a huge difference when it comes to whether or not your child goes missing. who they play with. we look' etan patz case, he was confessed by the offer of a
