a fairfax county farm, park, several animals purposely attacked and this morning, police say, it is not the first time something like this has happened in the area. the latest as fox 5 morning news at 7 starts right now. >> it is 7:00 a.m. on monday, may 28th. the sun is up it is going to be a hot one out there. i am sarah simmons in for tony perkins. >> i am allison seymour. weather and traffic just a minute first we continue to monitor tropical storm beryl off the coast of florida. the storm made land fall just after midnight near jacksonville beach. near hurricane strength winds, 70 miles an hour. heavy rain, strong winds are expected to continue today. beryl is forecast to weaken as

though, those who served and lost their lives in iraq and afghanistan. today, president obama will honor them. one of several ceremonies throughout the area this memorial day. first at 8:00 a.m. this morning, world war ii memorial, surviving veterans of world war ii will attend the breath laying at the freedom wall, u.s. -- breath laying at the freedom wall. traditional breath laying at the tomb of the -- wreath laying at the tomb of the unknown soldier will happen this morning. anyone attending will need to go through the security. standing room only at the wreath laying. later in a afternoon president obama will speak at the vietnam veterans memorial wall to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the war, there

will be a wreath laid and 10 new names added to the wall. president regan and clinton are the only other two president's to speak at the wall. miss america will also be with that live on fox 5 at 2:00 p.m. today. back here at arlington you can see the flags at each grave site. this year, army soldiers placed more than 260,000 flags it took them about three hours, and it is something that they have done here now, for the past 40 years. that is the latest here on memorial day, back to you. >> thank you sherry. while president obama gets set for a whole day of remembrance, mitt romney will spend the day in san diego, first stop a tribute to service men and women at balboa park, then he will be joined by john

mccain visiting the veterans museum, for many this added importance the 50th anniversary of the vietnam war. rolling thunder rumbled from the pentagon to the district yesterday. bikers from all over the nation took part in the 25th annual event. it is about love of country and gratitude for those who served in vietnam and other conflicts. >> basically rolling thunder is big on awareness of pows and mias but in support of veterans from every war, making sure the public is aware. >> we are here to bring attention to the fact that we still have men and women being held in foreign lands and foreign countries, from different conflicts. >> roughly 400,000 people took part in this year's

demonstration ride. check of the mornings other top stories, family members of a marine found dead in his racks another -- barracks at fort mead. the 19-year-old was training to be a combat camera man. so far, no word how he died but his family have not ruled out anything including foul play. we spoke with his father by phone from north carolina. >> he was loving the marines, is all i know. he was having a good time. i've heard of no trouble, i've heard of no -- he was in good health as far as i know, just a big shock. >> this memorial day will be tough for his family's the victim's dad, both grandparents and great grandmother all served in the armed forces. prince georges county police say a 60-year-old man involved in an alleged hit and run is in custody this morning the man accused of hitting a

pedestrian, in chillen leaving him in critical condition. the man drove off after the accident saturday night but came back to the scene sunday morning to talk to police. according to police the victim was not near a cross walk or intersection when he was hit. disturbing discovery at a farm park in fairfax county, sunday morning staff at kid well barn at frying pan park discovered two goats, a calf, and chicken had been cut. one of the goats had to get stitches on his head, all of them will be all right. but now police want help finding out who did this. anybody driving by or walking in the area may have heard or seen something we want to hear from those people. >> it doesn't make sense. i don't know who can do that, you know, why would you do that to animals. >> the attack comes weeks after three horses were stabbed in a barn adjacent to the park but police says the not clear if the two incidents are related. >> rescue teams searching for a

national memorial day parade kicks off on constitution avenue. we will carry it live here on fox 5. this year it will feature a very special tribute to the generation that served and sacrificed in iraqi freedom. tim, the executive director of the american veterans center joins us live. good morning tim. >> good morning sarah. >> give us an idea about the special tribute to some veterans just coming home. >> absolutely. back when the war ended in december, 2011, there came a lot of calls out there, in the press with a tribute to the iraq war veterans and generation that served in iraq. whether in new york or here in washington with troops in afghanistan it was decided a big ticker tape parade of sorts may not be appropriate but memorial day is a day where we honor the sacrifice as well as the service. so we decided that why don't we make that a big part of this year's parade, we are inviting

all iraq war veterans who would like to participate to come out and join this year's parade and walk down constitution avenue in honor of come raids who made the ultimate sacrifice. >> very emotional for those folks as well. emotional as people reflect and look back at other wars we have fought. special tributes for other wars from years past. tell me about those. sure well, the parade is amoving timeline of american history, tributes and reenactors from the american revolution up to world war ii we have veterans from if war, korea, vietnam, gulf war and bu war -- bigotry tribute to the iraq war. chuck yeager was a world war ii veteran before becoming a test

the archbishop of washington is taking aim at the media, speaking on fox news sunday, cardinal donald whirl said networks quote missed the boat by largely ignoring the lawsuits, filed last week by catholic institutions challenging the obama

institution so called contraceptive mandate. steve has details. >> reporter: police call, religious and legal fire storm continues to swirl around the obama mandate, that employ injuries provide contra sieve tip coverage, -- employers provide contraceptive coverage. the president offered a redemption to religious groups allowing insurance companies to pay not the hospital or school but the bishop says since some of them are self-insured they would be directly paying against something against their religion. >> this isn't about contraception it is about religious freedom embedded in the mandate is a radically new definition of what constitutes, a religious community. what constitutes, religious ministry. >> reporter: the archbishop of new york is also active in this legal battle he agrees the administration uses a narrow definition in its exemption which is too restrictive.

some catholic groups are fine with the compromise and polls show 80 to 90% of americans approve of contraception whether catholic or non- catholic, democrat or republican. >> it is about health, every religion has its place in women's lives but shouldn't be to hamper health decisions i don't think the church has a right to make decisions for the women. >> reporter: that mandate goes into effect in august. in washington, fox news. some military veterans started a new website to tell the stories about those who made the ultimate sacrifice. aim of american hero project.org is help people make a personal connection with the fallen the same way they do with movie starathletes. they are encouraging surviving family members to visit the site and submit their loved ones stories. memorial day weekend provides a major boost for tourism across the weekend. it turns out more tourists than

the author retired lieutenant, he is joining us on this memorial day, with more information and also how we can all help. this is the author of the post. u.s. marine corp. retired it is wonderful to meet you. >> thank you so much for having me. >> our pleasure indeed. this book i was talking to sarah before, who doesn't want their story told we don't tell the story of these brave men and women enough do we. >> no, and the problem is the people, the veterans don't talk about their stories. we had one veteran who liberated another veteran on 29/april, 1945 and they were in the same post together for 15 years, and they didn't know about each other. >> wow. >> it wasn't until we did the book, a year later, the two different stories, came into my mind at night and i ran down stairs and looked at my notes and said this guy liberated

that guy on april 29th. this is why the book is so great you are talking about carl hall and gerry wolf during world war ii. i will hold this you have and hopefully capture this image in the book, you also had these wonderful picture that is tell the story. can you explain what the viewer is seeing there. >> what viewers are seeing there are images, most cases, then and now, of the people whose story -- their life story is told in this book. it is a story that is not just a snapshot of what they did in world war ii, korea, vietnam, or the modern wars, it is about the lifetime of service that they gave. beth of these gentlemen went -- both of these gentlemen went on to great lives gerry worked in defense industry, carl went on to become a phd engineer in an engineering school, they lived amazing lives, and it is not just the little piece that was going to war, that is what the book is about.

>> you spent what i would imagine is a labor of love, for years documenting, you have one veteran from world war 1, how far up do you go sir? >> we go all the way up to the afghan war. we've got in fact, in the afghan war, we have john, decorated by the germans, with the highest medal, that the germans give for saving german soldiers lives, in afghanistan. we've got a young man who is a bilateral amputee, you see pictures in the book of him standing for the first time on his new legs, and then later, skating on the wounded warrior ice hockey team. 85 stories, all told. >> it is been one of the great things in my life is to to know all 85 of these people. you get to know people really well, when you get to interview about their lives.

>> i would imagine, it is near pew tick for the vet and also -- therapeutic for the vet and also your families. in the book in the preface, i had to laugh out loud, how stories are passed down. veterans don't talk a lot so the story may diminish overtime. >> fascinating and scary at the same time in 1905, my great great grandfather was a civil war veteran told my grandfather because he didn't want to talk to a kid, about what he did in combat, he told my grandfather that he was a colored with bad posture who hid behind a skinny tree in the wilderness and was shot through the face and buttocks and that is what we believed until i researched the story in the 80s. >> the story was different. >> it was very different. he was leading the charge the last time he was shot first time he was out in front of the lines helping a wounded soldier

they were not stories of coward ess but he didn't want to talk >> my camera has gone away but these pictures you brought some of the great stories they tell, this is a native american. >> tom from north carolina retired up here. he flew a king fisher float plane. the first native american pilot, he flew it into the inside of yap lagoon during a big navy air strike on that place, and rescued two downed aviators he was awarded the distinguished flying cross for that event. the stories are just amazing, and the old men who live next door or young men that just came back, you have no idea, of the depth of the kinds of experiences that they have had. they are not all heros but they all took risk they all went overseas and they all came back and they've served a lifetime

making headlines, new clues in the search for a missing college student. police near lafayette found a bicycle belongs to the louisiana university student last seen may 19th. the bike was found in a remote swampy area, under a highway

won. the biggest precollege science fair in the entire world and 1500 students and they all have at least graduate thesis level projects and so, it is highly competitive and i won the grand award, $75,000. >> well, congratulations to you. >> thanks. >> that is amazing. now, 1500 people, you competed against from 70 countries and your invention won let's talk about this invention how you came up with it and what it is. >> so basically, we had this close family member that died due to pan creating cancer and then i got really -- pancreatic cancer and then i got really interested in detection. >> it is not easily detectable early. >> yeah, because the symptoms you have, they really are not significant toward pancreatic cancer you may have chest pain stuff like that, so the sensor, it is basically from one drop of blood to run six different

tests in my test i found that, for 100 patients, it had 100% diagnosis. >> so it is a blood test. >> yep >> and urine test as well. >> yep. >> you came up with the six tests that are tested from that sample. so how did you go about doing that? just an after school time. >> yeah, basically what happened i first came up with my idea and i was detecting this protein in the blood that is elevated when pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer or lung cancer are present. so my sensor, as i created my procedure for that and then e- mailed 200 professors at johns hopkins and national cancer institute and got 197 rejection e-mails and one acceptance. then i did work basically after school every single day and on the weekends every single break i had. >> when did you know, you really had something here that you were like, this could be

big. >> well, i didn't actually know the magnitude how large this would be until i won but i did kind of know that was pretty big because basically there is no actual cheap and inexpensive sensor that is accurate and easily used, that is out there right now. all of them they require some specialized thing and take maybe a week to do. >> at 15 years of age, you are single handedly, saving lives. that in and of itself, the $75,000 award is one thing but how does that make you feel? >> well, it just makes me feel awesome i can touch all these lives because about 44,000 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and 37,000 of them will die because it is the most lethal form of cancer and this could help alleviate that, only three takes five. i hear the apple doesn't

probably thought this day would never come you are doing a documentary about it, i sense it will have a funny edge because of the title. >> emphasis, a funny thing happened on the way to the white house, all types of comedians, dick gregory, we already have anthony anderson, sedrick the entertainer, tommy davidson, white, black, asian hispanic comedians all doing funny things about mr. obama or as mr. obama. so many people out there, who want to say negative things about mr. barack obama, make it seem like he is not doing a great job, that we just need some body on the other side, with a vehicle to say man you are doing a great job because i guarantee you, president bush, if he had killed osama laden, his picture would be on mount rush more we want to raise up our president and women love mr. obama.

like michael, i need you to be serious you play too much. right so can you tell us that before we let you guys go. >> the thing that i think keeps us together is that we really have a genuine love for each other. we really love each other. we care about each other, we care for each other, we laugh all the time, and we are best friends, so, whatever comes to us, we are going to handle it together, as friends i think that is the important thing in a marriage. >> we lift each other up, whatever idea the one has, the other is right there, lifting the other up. we like being with each other, we color coordinate and we laugh a lot. every single day, we spend a lot of time laughing and i don't think we argue, maybe twice. >> right.
