the outer loop trying to guest past coalsville road. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. thank you, julie. our top story this morning, an investigation is underway in prince george's county after a woman hit five children with her suv. >> this was the scene last night in hyattsville, and that's where our sherri ly is live with the latest on what is a truly tragic accident. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, allison. exactly that, a tragic accident. that's what neighbors here are describing to us this morning. it happened at a house about three houses down here. what neighbors are describing is that this woman had intended to put this car in drive, but instead, went in reverse. that suv hit five children who had been playing in the driveway, and then slammed into

the garage. this morning you can see the damage and some of the children's toys and belongings still on the ground there. neighbors described hearing a loud crash and seeing some of the children pinned beneath the vehicle. this happened around 8:45 last night in the 2200 block of hannen street. neighbors say the woman accidently put the car in reverse, then hit the gas. she heard the children screamed and tried to stop. the kids ranged in age from one and a half to 11 years old. police say the woman is the mother of at least one of the children and that all of the families have now been notified. all five of the children at last report were in critical condition at childrens hospital. police say medics performed cpr on at least one of the children. >> i say, what happened? she say, it looked like she was leaving the house and instead of going forward, the truck went backward. that's all she told me.

it was very scary. very scary. >> she say, oh, my son, my son, my son -- [inaudible]. >> reporter: we are expecting an update any time now from prince george's county police. from what neighbors are telling us, some of the children are in very bad shape and it doesn't look good. back to you. >> thank you very much, sherri. we have another disturbing incident on the roads, this one happening in dale city, virginia last night. a late model sedan was heading north on i-95 when a passenger side door opened and a man fell out and he was dragged for more than 200 feet before he fell to the home. he was flown to the hospital for treatment. state police are asking for help locating the driver of that vehicle. the search for a missing

man leads to a murder arrest. we want to warn you, these details are extremely disturbing. police say 21-year-old morgan state university student alexander kinyua has admitted to killing his house mate and eating parts of his body. earlier this week detectives found some of the remaining body parts inside the house that he shared with his family and the victim. alexander kinyua's father reported the victim missing last week. >> it's horrible. like, we can't believe something like this happened in this neighborhood. it's really sad. the family, they are such a good family. >> alexander kinyua was out of jail on bond for an unrelated crime when he was arrested for the murder. bail now has been denied. tony? maryland state police made an arrest in another disturbing case, this one involving boys in the bathroom at two i-95 rest stops. investigators say this man, 28-

year-old brian williams, took several videos that showed 11 boys using urinals at the rest stops, both north of baltimore on 95. the videos were allegedly taken on the afternoon of sunday, may 6th of this year. state police are looking for witnesses and potential victims to come forward. it appears the question of whether the government can say what marriage is will be decided by the supreme court. a federal appeals court in boston has ruled the federal law is unconstitutional. the three-judge package says the defense of marriage act denies gay couples the rights and privileges given to heterosexual couples. it is unlikely that former presidential candidate and senator john edwards will face a retrial. that is the word now from sources for the associated

press, reacting to yesterday's acquittal of edwards on one count. the judge declared a mistrial on five other counts. edwards was accused of using campaign contributions to cover up an extramarital affair, a scandal he addressed outside court after the verdict. >> this is about me. i want to make sure that everyone hears from me and from my voice that while i do not believe i did anything illegal or ever thought i was doing anything illegal, i did an awful, awful lot that was wrong. and there is no one else responsible for my sins, none of the people who came -- >> the jurors deliberated for nine days. they did not talk with the media as they left the courthouse yesterday. the economy sure to be a hot topic today, all eyes will be on the new unemployment

assignment editors. also an excellent musician. >> yeah. >> you were there yesterday. your overall impressions of the event? >> overall, unbelievable. couldn't believe being there, seeing all the musicians. the entire go go community was there. and all the go go man fans. it was unbelievable how many people were there. the atmosphere was so festive. i couldn't believe the smiles i was seeing on people's faces. i couldn't believe seeing kwame brown dancing with the biggest smile you've ever seen, like a kid. mayor gray, the same thing. dancing like you wouldn't believe. it was so festive. lots of hugs, lots of smiles. great music. i really enjoyed -- i was really proud more than anything to just be a part of the go go community and to see all the artists, all the band mates. it was d.c. through and through. i want to thank the brown family for allowing us to be a

in childhood obesity. joining us to talk about this is nutritionist robin webb, award winning nutritionist. thank you for coming in. good to see you. >> thank you. >> this is getting a lot of talk, particularly in new york city. from your view, is this plan, is that an effective way to deal with this obesity problem and the nutrition problem? >> of course we have a big obesity problem and we have to acknowledge that. i think the mayor's heart and intention are in the right place. we need to have the conversation started but we need to continue it. i don't know. i think this might be a band- aid approach to a much larger problem. the problem is, you tell children you can't have candy, what's the first thing they want? candy. i'm not quite sure. i give him kudos for fighting obesity and making it large scale, thinking about the sodas. then you have to start with the

milkshakes, then the hamburgers and this and that, and where does it end and what is going to really work here? i'm not quite sure. >> that's one of the things i've heard in conversation about this, and you mentioned milkshakes, this focus is on sodas and there are a lot of other drinks out there that are also high calorie, including in particular milkshakes. >> yeah, there are. i think the sodas, i think they're so out there, and people drink them more because they're cheaper perhaps than the milkshake. the volume of sodas is so high, so i think his intention was starting with that. i think starting the conversation to get it out there to stop it is important. i was raised in the 60s, and i remember the ban the cigarettes and people may have thought, that's a band-aid approach. in a way, when you look back on it, if you're a smoker now, you

know, you're kind of a parya. i understand people's reaction it's controversial and may be a band-aid approach, but maybe we have to start somewhere. i understand what he's trying to do. >> we have graphics that will show drinks, and the common calorie counts. slurpees. i thought they would be much worse. 210-calories for a big one. a soda, a pepsi, 300-calories. red bull, which is common, a lot of young people drink this, 320-calories. starbucks, a frappuccino, they range widely, from 150-calories to 700. this particular one is the salted caramel mocha, 420 calories. what might be a better approach, or what might be another approach that a mayor, a city, others could take to try and combat this problem?

>> you know, it's interesting, i remember several years ago, i believe it was, i could be wrong, but i believe it was the mayor of philadelphia, they had such an obesity problem that they started a city-wide exercise nutrition program. they really went for it in education. not necessarily a ban on something, but an education. and statistics show the people who participated in the program, lost their weight, prevented diabetes. it was a full scale tilt educational program city by city. >> one movement we've seen is soda companies working with school districts in some states to change what's in vending machines. has that been helpful? >> i don't know the statistics yet of what's happened, but it's a step in the right direction. a lot of the soda companies provide a lot of money to school systems for their sports programs and what not. yeah, schools need the money, absolutely. that's a whole other conversation. but you want to be careful when they're in bed with them, are

making headlines this morning, the federal government is cracking down on discount bus companies. they shut down 25 carriers and bus ticket seller this week due to their safety records. the companies transported about 1800 passengers daily along i- 95 between new york and florida. the agency also introduced a new app called safer bus. it allows you to look up bus companies to inspect their safety records and see whether they are legit. yeah, that's a black bear caught on surveillance video, sprinting across campus at a california elementary school. >> middle school or elementary school? >> you'll hear in just a moment. he stayed for a minute. but the elementary school was placed on lockdown and the

from afghanistan. afghan officials say a bomb has exploded at a u.s. led base in the eastern part of that country. nato is only saying insurgents are to blame, and nothing about injuries. afghan police official claims six civilians have been hurt. we have a check of some of the top stories now from our area. we now know one of five children hit by an suv last night in prince george's county has died. she was an 8-year-old girl. that's according to a man who lives in the home where the accident happened. the kids were hit outside the home on hannon street in hyattsville. police say a woman was backing up, didn't see the children, and it crashed into the garage. some disturbing details not appropriate for everyone. kids especially, so they might want to leave a room. involving a murder in maryland.

police say a 21-year-old morgan state university student, alexander kinyua, confessed to killing his house mate and eating parts of his body. earlier this week detectives found some of the remaining body parts in the house alexander kinyua shared with his family and the victim. police arrested alexander kinyua. he is being held without bail. the latest now from the campaign trail. president obama heads to the midwest this morning. he'll speak at a plant in minnesota, then heads to chicago later this day for campaign events and a fundraiser. another endorsement for republican presidential nominee mitt romney. yesterday former first lady nancy reagan announced her support. romney and his wife visited mrs. reagan at her home. in a statement, mrs. reagan said romney would provide

leadership that our country so desperately needs. none of the people who came to court and testified are responsible. none of the people working for the government is responsible. i am responsible. >> extraordinary statement after the trial was over. john edwards, that's him taking personal responsibility for what he calls his sins, but not legal responsibility. and a jury agrees. after nine days of deliberations, the jury acquitted him on one count and deadlocked on five others. joining us now is defense attorney and former prosecutor a. scott bolden, managing partner of the d.c. office of reed smith, with some insight. thanks for coming in again. >> thanks for having me. >> i don't recall seeing many cases that were more sordid in the details that came out about his personal behavior and all that kind of thing. >> right. >> but the jury could not agree on most of the charges and now we have a mistrial and one acquittal. were you surprised by the

outcome? >> not really, actual. most of us in the criminal defense bar thought this was a thin read and a stretch to put a criminal fraudulent false statement overlay to some possible campaign finance violences. remember, the fcc, even the experts and former chairman came out and said they weren't convinced these were even civil or administrative discretions or violations and therefore, there were no administrative charges brought against edwards or his campaign. the standard for administrative violations is much lower than the higher standard, being the criminal standard here. whatever policy, whatever agenda the department of justice had, it failed miserable here, and most of us in the criminal defense bar predicted that. >> now, attorneys are smart and the prosecutors are smart as well. given all that information, why would they bring the case to begin with? >> you have to ask the department of justice that. there are some policies, some agendas, some cases that have to be brought.

this was not a case that had to be brought, not a case that had to be tried. in the end, the jury denied the prosecution of a victory with a novel theory that was brought to them. too hard to sort through. you can have campaign violations, you can be a bad person, you can do awful things in this life. none of us endorse it. but it doesn't make it criminal. it doesn't mean you can prove those claims against a human being beyond a reasonable doubt, and you know, the department of justice will often say, we'll let a jury decide or a judge decide. there are still some cases that are so significant, but out of bounds, it probably ought not be brought. >> interesting. i want to ask you about a couple of specific things, just struck me as odd. early in the deliberations they asked the judge if they could see transcripts from parts of the trial and he denied them that. why would they do that? >> it's the judge's discretion, that's the first thing. second of all, looking at all the transcripts probably would

have delayed this even further. they deliberated i think about nine days. then also a jury looking at transcripts, reviewing testimony, without the judge or the lawyers present to interpret, could be fairly dangerous in regard to what they extrapolate from it. some federal judges will let the jurors ask questions along the way, outside the presence -- or inside the presence of the courtroom, but outside their presence, as they write questions down. it really is a discretionary piece for judges. but i could see some risk there in not wanting to taint the jury based on their interpretation of those transcripts. >> interesting. did you make anything of the jury's behavior towards the end, you know, a couple of jurors seemed to start dressing alike. one juror allegedly they thought might have been beginning to flirt with edwards. it is odd. >> i make that it was bizarre

behavior. nothing i've ever seen in 25 years of practicing law in new york, d.c., prosecution or defense. but jurors are jurors. i thought what was more interesting was that the judge kind of went at it with abbey lowe quite a bit. probably different styles between them. more importantly, she let the alternates stay and deliberate, have lunch with the 12 jurors during the process, during the trial process. that's pretty unusual, because they could have undue influence on the ultimate outcome, even they they weren't going to be voting. the judge eventually let them go. but that was interesting. there were a lot of things that were interesting about this case. the jurors and their conduct and the flirting and the wardrobe apparel, wearing the same. but also the fact the case was even brought. a lot of sordid details. everyone now knows john edwards was many things, awful things, did awful things. he accepted responsible for them. but in a court of criminal law, it doesn't matter how bad you are. what matters is how criminal you are. in this case, john edwards is

time traffic. thank you so much. the big news from the campaign trail this week, mitt romney clinches the republican presidential nomination. where does his campaign go from here? one of his senior advisors will be a guest on fox news sunday and host chris wallace joins us for a preview. good morning. >> good morning. >> mitt romney is the man. what does happen now, now that he has gotten the delegates he needs? >> well, frankly not a lot different. ever since santorum dropped out of the race over a monday ago, he's basically been running as the nominee, and the obama campaign has been treating him as their opponent. and you know, clearly they're both focusing on the economy. romney made a surprise visit yesterday to solyndra, the solar panel company that the obama administration gave half a billion dollars in taxpayer money to that went bankrupt.

and he is attacking what he calls public equity, the idea that obama and his administration have been trying to pick winners and losers with taxpayer money. meanwhile, the obama campaign is continuing to undercut romney's record both in private equity and now as governor of massachusetts. the problem is, they went there yesterday, and let people know, and of course it's the headquarters of the romney campaign, and the romney campaign had hundreds of protestors out there who shot david axlerod down. finally got so bad, that axlerod said, you can't handle the truth like jack nicholson. never good when you're em percent nateing colonel jessup. >> i guess he felt like he would nowhere else to go. a lot of people have been making a lot about the negative ads and this sort of behavior. why are we surprised about this, chris? kind of been going on the last

"and we'll get back to you on that." romney's putting your paycheck at risk. planned parenthood action fund is responsible for the content of this advertising because mitt romney is out of touch and wrong for women.

talented natasha leggero. >> thank you, darling. >> okay. you're welcome. tony, over to you. >> funny, funny. thank you very much. 8# 38:00 now on this friday morning. still ahead, well, not so funny, the new unemployment numbers are out. they were released a few minutes ago. we're breaking them down after the break. >> but first, here's another that's my take. this morning the ambitious plan to improve the state of d.c. schools. >> a few weeks ago d.c. schools chancellor announced a five- year plan to boost the achievements of the public schools and raise the high school graduation rates. the goals of henderson's plans are aggressive. they include raising the math and reading proficiency rates from 43% to 70%. increasing the proficiency rates of the 40 poorest performing schools by 40%.

boosting graduation rates from 53% to 75%. adding a pilot program to expand the school day at some schools. but henderson has already gone on the record saying that this aggressive plan cannot be achieved given the current size of the district's public school system. we have too many schools with low enrollments, creating an inefficient system. 45 schools have less than 300 students. d.c. averages 382 students per school. compared with fairfax county, with 915. closing schools as the chancellor has called for, after the 2012/13 school year, is the most effective way to increase the efficiency of the school system. we agree with henderson. we can no longer afford to run 123 public schools. closing schools is the third rail for all school officials. chancellor henderson surely knows this. but to her credit, she has proposed a series of community discussions regarding the number and location of the schools that should be considered for closing,

renovation, or replacement by charter schools. chancellor henderson's office tells fox 5 that a series of state of the schools meetings will be held in each ward over the next few weeks. if you care about making the district's public school system better, this is your time to share your thoughts about this critical issue. but understand this, as long as all those vested in the process of improving the district's public school systems know that there is no gain without some pain. we can all look forward to a more successful and efficient public school system in the future. that's my take. let me know what you think. go to myfoxdc.com and click on that's my take or send me an e- mail. graduation, huh ?

may jobs report just came out, and it's a huge disappointment. employers added only 69,000 jobs this month. unemployment rose to 8.2%. before the report came out, experts had estimated u.s. employers were going to add somewhere around 150,000 jobs. of course, it didn't happen. this is the worst jobs report we've seen all year. we'll have more analysis of these numbers next hour.

all that good stuff. it's very important, you know, for shawna to match colors so she knows where the file location is, making sure we're printing the correct one. >> reporter: one lovely lady hands it off to the next lovely lady and you do the printing job. she talked about color matching, but what does that mean? >> she lays everything out on the proof sheet. when i come into the program to print it, i make sure all the presets where set, so when it sends it to the printer. it's the color it needs to be. >> reporter: these look like heavy duty printedders. >> they are. they print up to 6 feet of material. we have the glossy auto wrap material. >> reporter: i know there are different materials. how do you decide what materials to use? >> the different materials stick to different mediums, depending with a you're working with. auto wrap has an air release,

so as you're putting it on the vehicle, it goes on smoother without bumps or bubbles. >> reporter: how often do you have a problem, like in the middle you'd have to redo it? >> not often. usually as long as all the presets are set, all the material is loaded in straight, we don't really run into problems. but sometimes when you get, especially with grays, you have to mess around with color presets to make sure in here it might look gray, but when you take it outside, it's green. >> reporter: the different lighting affects it. that's the printing deal. let's walk over here, because we're going to move on to lamination. i'm interested, when people start this process with you, eddie, do you prefer for them to have some kind of idea of what they want, or do you like it better when they say, i don't know what i want, you help me out? >> i prefer for them to keep an open mind and not have expectations. >> reporter: then you can work together? >> yeah. they come in, set on something, a lot of times they really don't know what they need.

it's what they want. we got to kind of fill them in and adjust accordingly so it can be read quickly. not like a newspaper where you can hold it for a second. it's moving, 50 miles per hour, and it's got to be spot on. >> reporter: what's going on here? >> once we get the printing done, we laminate and this basically puts on a gloss clear coat, or we can put on a matte finish. matte is -- >> reporter: like a photo. >> yeah. glossy is good for outside, especially on the vehicles. then-- >> reporter: oh, my gosh! you all are too funny! they had this whole thing about how you had to come over here and see the laminate. you know what, that might be just the right size for the side of the live truck. i love it! y'all are too funny.
