[ male announcer ] it started like this... i speak the language of business. i know how jobs are created. [ male announcer ] but it ended like this. one of the worst economic records in the country. when mitt romney was governor, massachusetts lost 40,000 manufacturing jobs. a rate twice the national average. and fell to forty-seventh in job creation. fourth from the bottom. instead of hiring workers from his own state, romney outsourced call center jobs to india. he cut taxes for millionaires like himself... while raising them on the middle class... and left the state two point six billion deeper in debt.
7:52 am
so now, when mitt romney talks about what he'd do as president... i know what it takes to create jobs. [ male announcer ] remember, we've heard it all before. i know how jobs are created. money in this down economy but before you head to the store looking for a deal, fox consumer reporter, steve says there are a few things that are worth paying full price for. he joins us live from dallas to explain. really steve? let's start with summer projects. >> believe it or not yeah, there are things you should actually buy quality for. please don't go cheap because it will only cost you more money in the end. for example diy projects all about getting a good quality tool we got this laser level from black and decker. while i want you to buy quality you don't necessarily have to pay full price. we found the brand we wanted on offers.com and got 75% off, this guy only cost us 5 bucks. now, let's talk about the home, take a look at the video, because i am officially waving the white flag on patio furniture. look here is the bottom line if you want it to last you have to invest but, here is good news why while you shouldn't go
8:34 am
cheap that doesn't mean you have to pay top dollar either particularly at stores which are seasonal furniture stores a huge amount of reason for negotiating and haggling you should be asking for a better price, than what is on the sale sticker. negotiate anything that you can including free delivery that way you get the best quality at the best price. >> hmm, all right. very interesting. summer travel you say there is a time to save and a time to pay. tell me about that. >> absolutely. make sure that you don't ruin your summer travel, by going so cheap on the hotel, that you hate being there. take a look at video, these are from a website called oyster.com, they have a great section on their website where they take picture from the brochure, and then they go visit the same place and take the same photo, candid to show you what the actual experience will be like. make sure you know what you are getting yourself into, and if it means paying a couple extra bucks for a nicer hotel, then i
8:35 am
think it is worth it on your family vacation particularly those once in a lifetime experiences, go ahead and invest in a nice camera. i know that you think your iphone takes incredible pictures and video, but trust me, it doesn't. the quality of a photo from a good camera is well worth the price. >> all right. and spring and summer are business see times for home sales, is this a place where we can save? >> you know, there is all sorts of places to try and save money when buying or selling a house. shop around your rate look at your fee structure i would not try and cheap out on the realtor. i know that 3 to 6% looks like a lot of money but, another the end of the day, -- but at the end of the day it is because those folks do a whole bunch of work for you. if you try and sell your home yourself you will have to do your own marketing, negotiating, paperwork you will have to be available every time some body wants to come over and take a look.
8:36 am
the 3% you are going to pay a realtor will do wonders for your stress level during this experience, not to mention the listing on the mls for a realtor and trust me you can make up that money when it comes time to sell that house or buy your next house, by negotiating a good price. we have links to cool diy tools on the cheap, offers.com they are offered on your station website. >> helpful information. see you soon. funny he has been shopping for patio furniture so have i. i have been waiting and i am a little disappointed. somethings you cannot cheap out on. >> okay 8:36 a.m., wednesday morning. coming up space shuttle enterprise heading to its file destination. but there was a bump -- final destination but there was a bump in the road that caused damage. >> more pomp and pageantry to mark the final celebrations i can't stand these spots.

themcoming, so like adding insult to injury. >> i love it just as they used to say educated consumer. >> bingo >> today we are talking about this specifically, travel fees that aggravate us, sneaky cell phone fees and irksome car fees. ing a have a rating travel fees, -- aggravating travel fees it is a drain to travel any where, especially air travel. >> that is probably the most annoying fee, baggage fees which keep getting bigger along with baggage. one thing to remember about that, if you are taking a big trip and you are packing heavily so that you will be hit with over weight baggage charges, probably cheaper to just ship the suitcase or ship the stuff you want to spend. that way you will save fees, more and more people will be charged seat fees. my husband and i just experienced this flying to australia to see our son there
8:47 am
as an intern we paid our tickets on quantas you know quite a lot of money to go all the to australia, then had to pay $20 extra, to reserve a seal. >> to sit next to each other. >> right. >> so any way, -- a seat. to sit next to each other. >> right. >> so any way, it has always been extra to sit in the exit aisle but now more and more a fee to reserve your seat ahead of time . there is a way to beat it, one way if you are willing to take your chances, you can wait until the day you fly, because the airlines will hold backseats to give to people on the day, they are going to assign you, your own seat and you won't pick it they will pick it for you if you are willing to take that chance if it is a short hop flight, you may just want to get there a couple hours early, get a good seat. >> tough, i experienced it with the kids i wanted them to be together you got to pay some times. the usage fees for online booking and most of us book online these days.
8:48 am
>> right. this isn't totally universal but on some airlines, spirit has its business model is that it offers rock bottom fares but charges you for everything else. you have to be careful. it will charge you for booking your ticket online the way around that if you book through kay yak or one of those other travel aggregation sites you are able to avoid that and spirit doesn't charm you for buying a ticket at the airport -- charm you for buying a ticket at the airport. >> sneaky cell phone fees what are the highlights how do we get around them. >> the interesting thing is everybody when you get your bill you always look at the bill itself, how many calls text messages et cetera, et cetera. look at the very bottom often there are additional charges that are stuck on there, that you may be totally unaware of maybe they are charges for international calling or ring tones. i did another interview a couple weeks ago the person who
8:49 am
was interviewing me said they got charged for ring tones they didn't sign up for. immediately get in contact with the provider and say i don't want -- i am not going to pay for this. don't charge me any more for third party services i don't subscribe to third party services. the car fees, the big one with the question is, do you want insurance and i am always like i don't know do i? so, what are the major ones with the sneaky fees with the car fees. >> well, the major thing is the biggest at least dollar wise one is the collision damage waiver which is basically insurance. now the short answer to that is, if you are a driver and got insurance on your car you really don't need this because you are going to be covered. that is the short answer some people, now days, say well, they don't want to risk having an accident and having it be on their regular insurance policy. in that case they purchase the

8:52 am
