conservative because that's exactly what gabrielle giffords was. so each race, they're doing this individually. >> that's the only way they have a prayer. the problem though, with the strategy, is if there becomes a ground swell of support against the president, a lot of these guys that are kind of on the edge could lose because of that. and we saw that years ago, and you know, you see it from time to time going all the way back to reagan and carter, where the incumbents who were really moderate members of congress lost because carter took a bath on it. and so i think that is why you are seeing a lot of democrats right now running away from the president. >> let's talk about some new numbers, a lot of story, a lot of different stories with that. and just trying to get to the bulk of it here. reuters poll shows that the job performance of the president in the people's opinion has dropped from 50% a month ago to 47%. and that is also good news then for mitt romney. they came in within like a point or so about who they want

to see in the white house. with that same poll. peter, what can we make of this? and as a strategist what do you do now? >> first of all, you don't panic. the republicans have come together after the tough nominating process, number one. secondly, the president's numbers, 47, 48, is about where he has been for a while. that 50 number is a little on the high side. and if he were down at 40, 38, the kind of numbers that jimmy carter was getting into, then you begin to really go whoa. the important thing i think right now is that a majority of americans think that he has helped the economy rather than hurt it and where as congress in that poll, 70% of the people think that congress has hurt the economy. they do not like what is happening in washington. there is no question. jim and i have talked about that for a couple of years now. if i were -- you know, on the obama side, i think what you have to do is do the contract.
