9:00 am
you can feel the temperatures working in. i'm in northwest washington. behind me, a tree that has fallen from the storms on friday night. impressive sight. old oak tree. we're estimating it was about 60 feet tall before it fell. it tore down several power lines with it and of course knocked out power to this entire neighborhood here in northwest washington. also closed the roadway. as of this time, no tree crews here yet. they'll have to deal with the tree first and they can start to restore power. i'm sure this is a sight we see again and again. it is warming up. it feels a little better. little less humidity than yesterday. bright and sunny day. reagan national was 82 degrees and 82 in quantico. much of the area in the 70s. just like the last couple of days, once the sun is up, the temperatures jump quickly.

highs this afternoon in the mid- 90. satellite radar storms overnight pushing off to the south and east. eastern shore had storms. they're out of here. should generally be a bright and sunny day. few passing clouds, might be an isolated storm late today. the trend will be to keep things dry today. here's your forecast today, 95 in washington. cooler in the mountains with highs in the low 90s. that's a look from here. i'll be back in a couple of minutes. back to you, tony and allison at the desk. >> tucker, thank you very much. hundreds of thousands of people in the area remain without power this morning. here are the latest numbers. pepco is reporting more than 235,000 customers are out. dominion virginia reporting more than 169,000 without power in northern virginia. and bge says in montgomery county, prince george's county, anne arundel and howard counties, more than 89,000 outages. these numbers fluctuate from hour to hour.
9:02 am

county, alexandria city, falls church city, and anne arundel county. check the bottom of your screen. and you can find the same information on our web site, myfoxdc.com. we continue our live coverage now with an update from virginia. >> fox 5's holly morris is standing by in falls church with the latest there. good morning, holly. >> reporter: good morning, tony, allison. you know i believe in reporter involvement, right? >> sure. >> reporter: well, i don't have power. and i haven't since friday. so this is what it says, it says that i know what it feels like. i know your frustration level, and i also know your thirst for information. you want to know when everything will be restored, when it will be put back on. if you live leer in the northern virginia area, this is what i can tell you, they are working as hard as they can. you can probably hear the generator that's going. it's not too far from me. let me take you to these pictures. the city engineer came moments ago really, fired up the generator, because they're
9:05 am
doing what they can in order to get the traffic intersections working until the full grid is up and running. this is a busy intersection. it's really like the intersection between annandale and falls church. to treat it like a four-way stop is easier said than done. multiple lanes and people were having difficulty. so they got the generator going, got the traffic light back and working. if you come back out live, you'll see across the way is a nissan dealership. and that is closed because they do not have power. there's a lot of small businesses, or even larger businesses, that aren't open because they're waiting for their power to be turned back on. if you just go right on around the intersection, you'll see a gas station there. and it's very busy. he does not have power. he does have gas. that's why he's so busy. if you take a closer look, you'll see we have pictures of the generator running over there.
9:06 am
he doesn't have lights on inside. he's only taking cash. but he is a small business owner, said i can't afford to be closed another day. so i'm going to provide what i can, which is gas, which a lot of people need. but you have to do it with cash. he has an atm inside, it's not running. you need to have the cash with you upon arrival. you don't get out to the intersection or get out to the gas stations until you leave your home. a lot of people right now are still dealing with downed debris and power outages, dangling wires and they want to know, i feel everyone's pain, but i want to know when my power will be back on. dan from dominion virginia power was on our show earlier, and said they're doing their best. but at this point they are not going to take personal restorations predictions and this is why. >> what we find is this early in the stage in the restoration process, if we put a time out
9:07 am
there, it's likely not to be accurate. and that's more frustrating than not having a time, when you get a call that says your lights should be back on at 4:00, and they don't come back on at 4:00, that's more frustrating. when we put the times out, we want them to be as accurate as we can make them. >> reporter: they understand customers are getting antsy. 80 to 85% will be back online by tomorrow is the prediction. 95% by friday. but there will be those in some areas that can't turn on their lights or have the ac back on until saturday or sunday. let's check in with melanie alnwick in kensington this morning. >> reporter: we're seeing slight improvement in the situation here on connecticut avenue. again, i say it is only a slight improvement, because it is such a big job they're having to deal with in the southbound lanes. the tree crews have cleared and
9:08 am
now we have this bulldozer here trying to get the heavy debris out of the way, so they can finally start working on reconnecting the power line. this is the kind of situation that they are finding in and out the oak tree lined neighborhoods, and that's part of the reason it makes it so difficult. the good news is, we started friday with 443,000 people without power in the pepco region. this morning they added an additional 10,000 people, reconnected. so now we're down to about 233,000. it's no comfort to the people who are still out, but they are, as in virginia, they are working as hard as they can. 2100 people in pepco, all hands on deck. they've activated some of their call centers down in tampa and in alabama to make sure they can take the customer service calls as well. today is the day pepco is supposed to be getting the mutual aid crews on the ground.
9:09 am
here's what the pepco president had to say. >> estimated restoration time, global estimated restoration time, we're going to provide today, is 11:00 p.m. friday, july 6th. that is for the vast majority of our customers. >> reporter: so that is for the vast majority of the customers. but wednesday evening, that is the date you want to look out for. because on wednesday you'll know whether you have a good chance of being back on friday or if you're one of the unlucky few that will have your power out through the weekend. as you know, we'll be staying on top of this one. back to you. >> no doubt about that. thank you so much. many d.c. neighborhoods suffered heavy damage from the storm. here is video we got in this morning of a fallen tree still on top of several cars on 11th street near massachusetts avenue.
9:10 am
look at that. d.c. fire and ems says they've gotten more than 1500 emergency calls since the storm. they're also helping ddot with tree removal. reminder for people in north virginia, boil water advisory in effect. the areas inside this map need to use boiled or bottled water for drinking and cooking until at least tonight. this applies if you're a falls church utility customer, or a vienna water customer. fairfax water customers aren't included. one big question out there, how long will that food in your fridge last before you need to throw it out? here's a rule of thumb, if the temperature in your freezer or fridge goes above 40 degrees, you have to throw it all out. that's usually two days if the freezer is packed full, and one day if it's half full. as far as the fridge, only about four to six hours. problems for commuters, a gas shortage across the washington region. >> coming up after the break,

o. if you're running on empty, you're not alone. power outages are affecting gas stations, too. >> thought you were talking about my nerves. >> whole other thing. >> what is the best way to find a gas station that's open and has gas? sarah simmons is back with answers. she joins us now from the
9:15 am
newsroom. >> when you take a look at the pictures behind us here that we've been getting in from folks around the area, you can see the damage and why it's taking so long to get power back on. as you mentioned, gas stations are having a huge problem with that as well. so a lot of folks have been driving around, trying to figure out where they are going to find gas. a lot of places are still closed. with us now to help with details on this, lon anderson is joining us by phone now. can you hear me? >> i can, sarah. >> what's the best way for folks -- so they're not driving around emptying their tank, what's the best way to find a station open and running and has gas there? >> my advice is look for areas of businesses that have power, that's easy enough to check and see if restaurants in a given area are open. if the restaurants and other stores are open, then that likely means the gas stations are going to have power. that works in the government
9:16 am
county. we have some pockets where there is power, like in downtown silver spring and sure enough, the gas stations in downtown silver spring are open. similarly in northern virginia. where you find the downtown business districts, they are generally the first to get their power restored, so the gas stations in those areas are most likely the ones to be open. >> right, okay. that's a very good piece of advice. also i want to let people know, if they're on social media, people are sharing different places where they're seeing open gas stations, even on twitter, people put on the hashtag open gas stations, so that's helpful. one thing that's not helpful, there are issues it looks like with price gouging, perhaps. you've seen this even yourself driving around trying to get gas. >> well, i have, as a matter of fact. on saturday i filled up at a station in downtown silver spring for $3.75 a gallon,
9:17 am
which is fairly expensive. but the next day i went back, and the gas overnight had jumped to $3.90 a gallon. now, i know there is tremendous demand, there was a backup at this station. but that makes me believe there's gouging going on. it's hard for me to believe that station received delivery of gas overnight that was that much more. so i think in some cases we may see some merchants taking advantage of the fact that there aren't as many stations open now. so supply and demand. however-- >> how can people report it, lon? >> yes. in maryland, it's the comptroller's office you have to contact. and i apologize, i think it's the attorney general's office in virginia that has sway over it. >> okay. >> there are laws in both states against gouging. if people report that, it would
9:18 am
be helpful. >> absolutely. we want to let people know, we're glad you can join us by phone. you've been busy yourself, because you did not escape the wrath of the storm. we have a picture of your vehicle. this is your car, lon. i understand a fairly new car. tree came down on that. >> oh, my gosh. it's a beautiful explorer. we just looed that car. and as you can see, it is no more. we just have to stand and it took our breath away saturday morning when we went out and looked at the huge tree lying across it. it does take your breath away. >> it does, we're looking at the pictures now. our hearts go out to you and everybody else. we know a lot of people are dealing this as well. >> if everybody remembers, you know, it's just property damage, and you have to keep telling yourself that. unfortunately we had people that lost their lives in this terrible storm. >> right. lon anderson with aaa, thank you for talking with us this

what can you tell us about pepco's reliability plan? >> reporter: that's the question a lot of people have, because as we know, pepco has been under intense scrutiny from the public and from the public service commission, and they had to undertake this nearly billion dollar reliability enhancement slander. they're almost halfway through this five-year plan. and they've replaced transformers and very visible, we've seen a lot of tree trimming going on, those sorts of things. they say those have made improvements to their reliability, but those are intended to address what they call blue sky outages, not deal with situations such as what they're calling here catastrophic damage from these sudden storms. they do say, that they believe some of the improvements they've made, 21 sub stations went out. 21of them went out at the height of the storm.
9:34 am
they say that was probably less than would have gone out. they do think that the damage here and the power outages less than perhaps they would have been. but people are still saying pepco is on the clock, the clock is ticking for them. they want to know are they going to be able to get their power restored less than a week, a lot of people saying that week time frame, saying that's unacceptable. really pressuring pepco to get it on sooner than that. we have 2100 crews, pepco has all hands on deck working on this working as quickly as they can, working in 16-hour shifts. but you know, that's part of our job in the media, to hold their feet to the fire and make sure they're working as quickly and appropriately as they can, and as pepco did say after all of this is over, they'll have to file a report with the public service commission and we'll see whether they did live
