place along constitution avenue, independence avenue, virginia avenue, a number of streets across the mall. better take metro. make sure you have plenty of water and, of course, sun screen. on the other side of the town, accident activity, crash occurred in the 4:00 hour closing a stretch of the baltimore washington parkway. south wound, we've also have closure there isat powder mill road. traveling between d.c. and baltimore, the better bet is to stake with i-95 as the alternate route. >> thank you very much, july. >> we have more now on that deadly accident that we told you about on the b w parkway. the person who died was hit as they goat out of their car. the victim had pulled over to switch drove with another person in their car. that other person was taken to the hospital.

their injuries are not life threatening around 1:30 this morning, in an apartment building in the 1600 blocks of 17 street southeast, a person died. the cause of the fire is under investigation. a dangerous situation for some metro riders. transit agencies says that several passengers climbed out of a rail car on their own in an attempt to walk to a station after a train broke down outside college park. metro says that passengers should never take it upon themselves to do that the riders who stayed put were taken out later on but they described a terrible scene. >> police told us that the tracks were hot. when we got out, we had to walk the tracks and, at that time, they told us they were, indeed, still on.

>> about a mile in between the tracks. thank god, we were not electrocuted. this is crazy. we never should have to do that. that's crazy. you have little kids, all kinds of kids. >> frustration continued once the passengers reached the station because there was no shuttle bus waiting for them. some told fox 5 they were stranded for nearly two hours. this morning, frustrations continue for those still without power. five days now since friday's violent storms here is a look at the latest outage number. pepco is reported about 55,000 customers without power. nearly 40,000 dough minnian virginia customers are without power and b ge reported nearly 35,000. pepco customers in the dark. we'll get an update on the restoration efforts. extra crews have been added

to help people get back on line. melanie is live. mel? >> reporter: good morning. we have been watching those numbers from pepco and bge as well on the maryland public service website. we see them coming down slowly, inch by inch, maybe a thousand here and a thousand there. that's the good news. but as you can see with the situation behind me, there is so much cleanup to be done. folks here don't need to wait until tonight to know that their power is not going to come back on before the weekend is back. utility poles are still down, homes and cars are damaged. dark traffic signals adding to the frustration. the tree canopy in those older neighborhoods now becoming something of a liability. some homeowners who spent a fourth day in the dark made signs as a way to vent their

frustration. governor o'malley says that the company is getting extra help. >> we have now seen an addition, really a doubling of out-of-state crews that have now arrived in maryland and on the scene in the field, restoring feeders and restoring lines. we have gone from 1000 out-of- state crews yesterday to now approximately 2000. total work force out there on the streets has gone from 6000 yesterday to 8000. >> and governor o'malley speaking about total work foes statewide. pepco added about a thousand people to the restoration he was in the last day. we want to show you why certain places are going to take so long to get back up. what you are looking at is a tight shot of a transformer that is on top of a utility pole that had fallen down. inside that transformer, we believe, according to a pepco representative, we talked to neighbors here, there could be some toxic chemicals, toxic

pcb. the top popped off. there is a little bit of a sheen on the road. not only are they dealing with power lines and trees, in some cases, they are having to deal with toxic chemicals to clean up, too. >> melanie, thank you very much. the storms that rolled through last night in our area forced the u.s. capitol to evacuate the west lawn for a short time. rehearsals were being held for tonight's concert. rehearsal started back after 10:30. if you can make it down to the mall for fireworks show, there are other places to celebrate. >> there will be plenty of works to see in northern virginia. they will be going off tonight in vienna, fairfax, arlington, leesburg, manassas and fredericksburg. can you head out to the

nationals park. we have not heard of any cancellation from virginia. and in maryland. several 4th of july celebrations have been canceled due to ongoing problems from friday's big storms these are the events that are canceled now. kensington, germantown, rockville, gaithersburg, they have all scratched their fireworks displays for tonight. president obama is celebrating the nation's 236th 4th of july at the white house today. he returns from camp david this morning and later will speak at a citizenship ceremony for active duty military members in the east room. the president begins a two-day campaign bus tour in ohio and pennsylvania. his republican challenger in november, mitt romney, is taking a break from his vacation to attend a july 4th parade. romney and his family you due to march through the center of a small town in new hampshire this morning. he and his whole family who now

welcome back, 7:15, making headlines this morning, another attack on americans reported in afghanistan. a man wearing an afghan army uniform opened fire on nato troops in wardak pro since in the eastern part of the cup from time to time five are them were wounded and they are reportedly u.s. service personnel. the five injured are now being treated at a medical facility. a little closer to home, a fireworks explosion in new hampshire set two children to the hospital. police arrived the family home on fire last night.

they noticed several fireworks in and around the residence. a total of nine people were hurt. a neighbor heard a lot of fireworks going off and soon saw several firetrucks racing by his whole. you hear that whistle and you think of the name andy griffith who entered ma'am of our homes as sheriff taylor. he died yesterday at age 86. just hours after he passed away at his home in north carolina, he was buried. >> he was americana. >> he was a great story teller. he used to be on the talk shows and would tell these long, funny stories that had some heart to them he was great. he was really great. >> i love matlock. i know that's not popular with

are expecting? it's hard because of the heat. some people may stay away. >> it's hard to predict and we are not in that business anymore but we expect large crowds as the morning progresses, you know, there is a security sweep underway right now. the national mall opens at 10:00 and will remain open through the rest of the day. anyone coming on to the national mall or on to the west lawn will have to pass through the security check point. the vice is the less you bring, the better off you are. less is more, so to speak but some items you should bring along with you, water, gatorade to keep yourself hydrated. bring some trail mix or granola, something that has a little bit of salt in it that's going to help keep your electrolytes in balance. certainly your enemies are going to be caffeinated drinks and alcohol. those are really not a wise idea. alcohol is prohibited on the national mall to begin with.

both of those contribute to dehydration which is what we don't want. certainly, come on to the mall, stake out your territory, bring sun screen, lather up with sun screen. you know better the weather forecast than i do but be prepared for some showers if that were to happen. if in the worst case scenario which we certainly do not hope happens, if there were thunderstorms in that four-p.m. to 7:00 p.m. range, let's say, we have experienced with three times prior within the last ten years of evacuating the national mall if that becomes necessary. there is what is called a shelter in place program in which various buildings along the national mall, constitution avenue and independence avenue where visitors are allowed to shelter in place in those buildings. once an okay sign is given, visitors are allowed to come back on to the mall. hopefully we won't have to use that in this year. the other thing that we say to

people, when you are coming down to the mall, pack yourself with a lot of patience. going to be a lot of people here, a lot of children, expect that. patience is also going to be the word of the day. >> bill, excellent information. we have to graphics that we're going to put up because you were mentioning what people can bring and you were saying, you know, don't bring calf nate drinks, no alcohol. i want to show what people should not bring to the mall. not allowed on the mall. weapons, can, goes without saying. fireworks. don't bring your fireworks. alcohol is prohibited and grills. and fireworks safety. can you talk about that for thosclose to the area where the fireworks are going to be going off? >> absolutely. hopefully, we have an area that is cordoned off, in a secure area. knowing the wind patterns that we have on the 4th of july, that area is all closed off to the public. the public will not be allowed in that area in the first

a decorated d.c. fire lieutenant who spoke out against the fire chief's policy has been demoted to sargent and suspended without pay for six and a half weeks. lieutenant robert al vorado contacted fox news to complain about the chief's policy to wear clothing with only the new d.c. logo. he says that's expensive. the fire chief says that firefighters are given $5000- year-old. >> other issue, this video that

some five days now after friday's vial exhibit and deadly storms, the cleanup and power restoration efforts continue. thousands have gotten their electricity back but at the same time, thousands of other homes and businesses are still without electricity. the impact of the storm now renewing the debate about whether to bury power lines, but relocating them under ground costs as much as $15 million per mile and that gets

came from right here on the plantation. you can go from the garden to the kitchen and the dining room and the exhibit ties it all together. they have some 125 exhibits or items on display. one will be on display through tomorrow and this is pretty incredible. >> this is one of my favorite things in the exhibit. this is called martha washington's cookbook but it was really put together by about six generations of women, women and their husbands. it dates back to the 17th century. >> reporter: so what martha washington got that cookbook, it had a century already on? >> yes. she may not have cooked from it, but there were some familiar recipes that we can relate. and then cakes made from marigold. >> this is only on loan until

verizon facility in arlington which knocked out 911 services in fairfax and arlington. arlington national cemetery was hit hard by the storms on try day. three of the nation's oldest trees were knocked down. eight large trees were destroyed and more than a dozen others will need trimming. there is a small number of headstones that were damaged. they will be replaced. the video has gone viral. a huge bump in the road sends an suv flying into the air. take a look for yourself. this happened on a wisconsin freeway earlier this week. it was so hot that the extreme heat caused the road to buckle you can see what happens when an suv tries to go over it. take a look. >> oh, wow.

where do we begin? >> we make chocolate ice cream. we have the chocolate display set up. >> reporter: was this his favorite flavor? >> i don't know. i don't know if he made that. he drank chocolate, so this may be a possibility. >> reporter: over on the ice cream side, this is the cream machine for ice. and you can see it's just a long tubular copper cylinder, and it has a lid on top. and the purpose for that was to go back and forth to keep the cream in motion. and if you visit our kitchen, you will see the same thingucke >> what are all these ingredients over here? >> these are spices that go into the chocolate and they would have also gone into the ice cream. you have more of a coloring

than a flavor, annise. cinnamon, cayenne. >> in ice cream? >> in ice cream. >> nutmeg and vanilla. vanilla not being as popular in the 18th century as it is today. >> reporter: where do we go from here? this looks like a chemistry experiment. >> it does. first, we need to get our ingredients in a bowl here. what you need to do first is snip off some sugar. >> reporter: okay. how do i know how much? >> just snip off how much you can get. >> i didn't get very much. >> i think what we will do is take a knife and slice off some sugar. >> and i put it in the wrong place. i should have put it in leer. >> break up the sugar, pound it first and you can put it light

into the bowl. >> i was trying to eliminate a step there. >> it's in the bowl. >> now, you have to grate your chocolate. >> now, , i'm thinking they don't make their ice cream in advance? you have to make it on get? >> you have. you have to make it and put knit a bucket of ice and salt. and eat it immediately. >> i hate to eat my ice cream immediately. >> they are making these demonstrations from 10:00 until noon so you want to come out early and start your july 4th here. we have a link on the website and the ice cream recipe on our website as well. we'll see how this all turns out coming up in our next half hour. i'm tired already. >> geez. >> a lot of work but i bet it's going to be worth it.
