person is dead afteflames tore through an apartment. it happened in the 1600 block of 17th street. still no word on the victim's identity for what caused this fire. to maryland, a person is dead in that state after being hit by a car on the b w parkway. one other person was transported to the hospital. this happened around 4:00 and forced the complete closure of the highway. the person that was hit had gotten out of the car to switch seats with a passenger. no word on the passenger's condition nor the identity of the victim or if anyone will face charges. so far, there is no word this morning on what cause add metro train to break down outside the college park station. several passengers were caught on camera walking along the tracks. we are told one passenger hit the emergency button, got out and others followed suit. the train was eventually pushed into the station.

metro wants to remind you to never walk on the tracks. the loundoun county board of supervisors is jumping on board and will help pay for the extension of the silver line. board chairman scott york says that the rail extension will help relief congestion and spur economic development in the county. when completed. the silver line will span 23 miles between east false church and ashburn and will cost about $6 billion. we continue to stay on top of breaking news in upper marlboro, maryland. four people, including two kids, were sickened by carbon monoxide this morning. this happen at a hem on van brady road. the children's dad told authorities he had trouble waking them up. the children were flown to shock trauma in baltimore where they have a hyperbearic

chamber. officials are looking into whether a generate being used in the home caused that co poisoning. cleanup and effort to restore electricity continue across our region after the latest powerful storms. pepco is reporting more than 51,000 customers without power. more than 34,000 virginia dough minnian customers and bge reporting more than 34,000 there as well in montgomery, prince george's county and arundel and howard counties. the impact of friday's powerful storms is renewing debate whether to bury power lines. but that is costly, $15 million a mile and that cost will be passed along to customers.

several 4th of july celebrations have been canceled. kensington, germantown, rockville and gaithersburg have scrapped their july 4th celebrations. thousands will head to the mall now for the july 4th celebration. >> for more on how to do that is sarah simmons. >> reporter: would not be the 4th of july without the celebration here on the national mall. folks are happy to know that is still going on. if you take a look here, you can see that security is already down here quite in full force, too. police have already put up tents, they have gated areas. a lot of police are already down here just trying to get in place for this so people are going to be mindful of that. before tonight's fireworks that are set for 9:00 ten, there is going to be a parade down constitution avenue. the fire work show at 9:10.

and the capitol 4th start at 8:00 p.m. take a look at some video from last night. a there is a dress rehearsal on the west lawn. the rehearsal was cut short because of more bad weather. tonight's big celebration again still on. officials are urging people to take metro for this, but if you are driving, keep in mind there are a lot of road closures and restrictions. if you cannot make it down to the national mall for the big fireworks show, there are several other local places to celebrate the holiday. going to be plenty of fireworks in northern virginia. here are some of the places that will be going on. vienna, fairfax, arlington, manassas, fredericksburg. head to mount vernon nor a daytime smoke fireworks show. that's at 12:45 this afternoon.

a little bit earlier in the day. we have not heard of any fireworks displayed canceled because of the storm. so that's good news. maryland, fireworks will go off as planned. annapolis, university of maryland, greenbelt, takoma park and poolesville. there have been some cancellations as you guys mentioned due to power problems there. as the national park service says as they do each year, pack light. sun screen. it's already hot. as you can see, i'm starting to melt under the sun right now, even at this early 9:00 hour, tony and allison. it is going to be a nice one. >> you have a nice glow about you >> reporter: that's where we are going with this, okay, thank you. speaking of the 4th of july, president obama is celebrating the nation's 236th 4th of july at the white house

today. the president is due to speak at a citizenship ceremony for active duty military service. the big highlight at the white house is melia's birthday. she is turns 13 today mitt romney is marching in a july 4th parade in new hampshire. he is on vacation at the romney family estate with all 30 members of his family. that includes 18 grand children. republican presidential candidate will take a breast from his vacation to participate in the parade in the small town of wolfeboro. making headlines this morning, tony, another attack on americans reported in afghanistan. a man wearing an afghan army uniform opened fire on nato troops in the eastern part of that country, fire of them wounded. reportedly they were u.s.

personnel. pakistan reopened supply lines to nato after secretary of state hillary clinton said, sorry, we apologize for killing 24 pakistan soldiers last year. but the white house is denying any apology. thousands of trucks with military supplies have been sit on the border between afghanistan and pakistan. heavy fighting is reported near the syrian capital this morning. at least 17 have apparently been killed in fighting in suburbs of damascus. this week's violence has been particularly bloody with hundreds killed in the last few days. human rights watchers are accusing syria of several crimes against humanity and is calling for international action still ahead, a very high ranking member of the military throwing out the first pitch at

>> a decorated d.c. fire lieutenant who spoke out against the fire chief's policy has been demoted to sargeant and suspended without pay for 6 1/2 next. lieutenant alvorado contacted fox 5 to complain about a new requirement that firefighters only wear new clothing with the new d.c. elselogo. he calls it an expensive

change. the fire chief said that firefighters are given $5000 worth of clothing for allowance. but fire alvorado says that the allowance is spent on buying gear to get into a burning building, not just this clothing. another reason is that alvorado rushed to help a patient and didn't ask us to turn off the camera. >> they asked me to stop concentrating on a patient and violating the first amendment and stopping you. it's retaliatory and punitive and very vindictive. >> alvorado does have the right to appeal. the fire chief it says he won't comment until he sees that appeal. meantime, the d.c. firers union wants to know who ordered

an engine company to fill a private pool over the weekend. sources and witnesses say that less than 24 hours after a storm rolled true city leaving hundreds of thousands without power, someone at the highest level of the department ordered engine 13 to fill autopsy pool in northeast. the president of the firefighters union estimates that the engine was outs of service for at least a half hour filling the pool and heading to a hydrant for a refill of its own. >> it's high pressure unusual on a normal day, much less in a state of emergency, on the saturday, a day after the storm. >> fire chief ellerbie would not comment on that saying that the real story is the fact that fire and ems responded to more than 50,000 calls.

today. that's one new events they are having here as part of their 4th of july celebration at mount vernon. they are having a naturalization ceremony, military music and reenactments and all the daytime fireworks that they usually have but this is new and that's why we are doing it this morning. this is a process. you cannot just run out to dairy queen back in the 18th century and get a soft scoop serve. >> gail is the manager of reenactment. people will be surprised here. >> very much so. what you put together earlier is now cooked and whisked and ready to go into the ice cream freezer >> from start to finish, how long would it take to make ice cream? >> a couple of hours at least. >> maybe it makes the treat all that sweeter. >> of course, and you didn't get it that often.

tonight. >> reporter: we talked about it often, but music might be that one thing that transcends language, politics, what have you. that's the great equalizer. >> we have been doing it for 45 years. music is the message and music definitely brings people together around the world because we travel all over the world >> reporter: what strikes me as unique about kool and the gang is that core group has been there frominception through toi. is that a pretty rare thing with the band that you have come up with? >> yes. the four original members, we are the four standing -- we started in 1964 and we are still together. it's been great. >> and is that the jazziaks? is that how you say at that?

>> yes. >> you hear the jazz in there, the funk and r and b and pop in later years. how did that trans form may go come may go -- transformation come about that? >> you know, we listened to things. we had the great james brown on influenza and then 70s was more funky. >> and then more pop stuff in the 80s. >> do you sit back and say, my group is pretty amaze glg all the time. >> reporter: who came up with the nickname kool? because i wanted to ask you this for many, many yearsable country boy coming from youngstown, ohio, moving to jersey city, everyone has a nickname. i tried to fit n i thought it
