if you are heading out later today, we have rain showers across the area to start the morning. much cooler temperatures. in fact the highs later today will be in the middle 80s. get ready for a nice respite from the impressive heat wave we had the last two weeks or so. there is your radar. shower activity is winding down. showers across central maryland and the north side of d.c. and anne arundel getting a few showers. generally the rain showers and thunderstorms overnight are winding down. the trend will be toward mostly cloud afternoon. i don't think we will see sunshine later. temperature at reagan 75 degrees. that is 27 degrees cooler than the high temperature yesterday. humidity 82%. winds out of the north and east at 9 miles per hour. looking at the forecast, plenty of clouds around later this afternoon. could be a few showers or left over storm if you are south of the city. as you get farther north, more

sunshine. northern maryland, southern pennsylvania a little sunshine for you. highs in the mid-80s. 85 washington. 85 waldorf. more details on the workweek forecast coming up in a minute. back to you. >> sounds good, tucker. crews are working around the clock to restore power to customers affected by yesterday's storms. more than 4,000 dominion virginia customers are without power. pepco is reporting less than 400 outages. bge 600 outages. we have school closures to pass along. in prince george county frances fuchs and thomas claggette are closed for lack of air- conditioning and brooklyn park and lake shore crofton woods and pershing are closed.

cleanup efforts are underway after another round of severe weather ripped through our area. >> storms seem to have hit fredricksburg virginia the hardest causing serious damage. that is where we find melanie alnwick with the latest this morning. melanie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, allison. building inspectors arrived a short time ago taking a look at what used to be the cheer fusion dance studio. you see the yellow sign there, danger. this building, as you can imagine has been condemned. take a look at it. there is practically nothing left. there were about 25 people inside. students, intructors and parents, when the half dollar size hail rained down. people said it sounded like an explosion as the roof tore off and the cinderblock walls collapsed. the roof landed about 300 feet away on top of a home. the house was knocked off its

foundation. people rushed inside to help the elderly couple out. we got video of the front of the fleming center that got hit first by the strong winds. there is a mat stress store, beauty shop with daylight where it shouldn't be because parts of the roof are missing or collapsed inside. now, the owner of the hair salon and her daughter were inside the building. they managed to run to a utility closet. when everything collapsed they got trapped inside. neighbors in this business park rushed to help them out and tony and allison, the one thing that everybody is commenting on as amazing and jaw dropping as the damages here, it's more incredible that there weren't any serious life threatening injuries. >> that is absolutely amazing. >> is the national weather service going to come through to take a look at the damage? >> reporter: we heard earlier that the national weather service was going to come through here because there was

talk whether it was a tornado or one of these microbursts. we have not sign the national weather service today. we do expect them. business owners are waiting for the gas company to come. we are not smelling anything but everybody before they go in the building they want to make sure that they are safe. once the building inspectors come in and the insurance companies, they want to get in the businesses and salvage whatever they can. i think it's safe to say it will be a long process before everything is back to normal. >> melanie alnwick reporting from fredricksburg, thank you. pepco says everyone that lost power on june 29th has finally gotten it back. crews made the last of the connections over the weekend. pepco and other maryland utilities have three weeks to submit reports to the public utilities commission on how they responded to the late june storm that knocked thousands of

people off the grid. >> pepco is not functioning as a good corporation should. take lockheed martin or boeing or general electric, this would be unaccept i believe for a company of their stature to be operating like pepco is. >> one custody started an online petition asking pepco ceo to bury the power lines using annual profits. they made $68 million in profits in the first three months of the year. a study by the electric power institute says it would cost between 5 to $15 million per mile to bury the line. new this morning a deadly police-involved shooting in alexandria and the hunt for a second suspect. this started around 11:20 last night when fairfax county officers confronted two men acting suspiciously at route 1 and fry road.

both men ran off. one pulled out a gun and started firing toward the officers. officers returned fire and the suspect was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. no officers were injured. the district, two people were stabbed in columbia heights section of northwest. police believe this started with a fight at a nearby establishment. the injuries are serious but both victims are expected to survive. to maryland, anne arundel county fire officials are trying to figure out what caused a fire at a home on newport avenue in millersville. the fire caused about $200,000 in damage. this morning investigators are trying to find out what caused a massive house fire in largo, maryland. this broke out last night at a single family home in the 1500

block of marjorie drive. flames consumed the front of the house forcing firefighters to evacuate the structure. the fire seriously damaged the home but no one was hurt. making headlines, six americans are killed in afghanistan. they died in a roadside bombing while serving with nato. the taliban is claiming responsibility for the attack. another two nato soldiers were killed in the south but nato has not said what country they are from. a total of 29 nato soldiers and civilians were killed yesterday. afghanistan is one of the poorest countries on earth but it is getting a financial post to the tune of $16 billion in development aid. secretary of state hillary clinton was at a donor's conference in tokyo and met with hamid karzai. the meeting was to show that there will be no quick exit from afghanistan after foreign

troops pull out in 2014. there is a ceremony going on at arlington national cemetery to bury six airmen that went missing nearly 50 years ago. >> the u.s. military is burying them with full military honors. we get more from sarah simmons. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tony and allison. the ceremony is going on in another section of arlington national cemetery. but the family members, it's hard for them to believe as well as many other people that it has been almost 50 years since that plane disappeared and finally the family members are going to be able to say their goodbyes this morning. let me give you back story about what happened. this was an air force plane that was nicknamed spooky. it was going on a mission christmas eve of 1965. there were six servicemen, six american servicemen on board. we have some of their pictures. you can take a look on your screen right now. we have four of the six

pictures. all of them were on board the plane. it took off from vietnam for a combat mission in 1965. there was reports of some sort of may day signal that came out over loas. there was two days of searching. they lost contact with them. they continued to search for two days and came up with nothing. that is all the family knew for all of these years. it wasn't until a few years ago in 2010 and 2011 that a joint u.s. loas seven mission was able to discover the remains and then bring them back home. as you mentioned, the burial service is getting under way right now. full military honors. they will be burying them in a single casket at arlington national cemetery. quite a bit of closure for many for all these years had no idea. they had hope maybe thinking that one of them or several

were taken as prisoners of war. but in the end all of them perished. the final goodbyes and finally a sense of closure for these families. that's the latest at arlington. back to you, tony and allison. >> thank you, sarah, very much. out west, an area charred by wildfire is being hit by a new problem. heavy rain is causing dangerous mudslides. the high point fire was contained this past weekend. neighbors placed sandbags around the property. still some people have reported several feet of water in their basements. how about good news here. baby eagle severely burned from a raging wildfire in utah is expected to survive. someone found the 70 day old bird burned alive in a charred nest last week. phoenix is being treated at a

free homes. one possible explanation, dirt and allergens brought into the home are good for babies's inmum system. prince george's county school will lose two superintendents. the school board says it will act quickly to appoint an interim superintendent and develop a process for naming a new permanent chief. lisa is here. good morning. thanks for being here. so, okay. is this coincidental that both of the top administrators are leaving at the same time or is something else going on here. >> prince george county had administrators -- had problems with administrators leaving the last 15 years. montgomery county replaced the superintendent after 12 years. fairfax is looking for a superintendent for the first time in eight or nine years.

prince george county is in a situation where it's viewed as a launching pad for positions in philadelphia and other high profile spots. it needs to become more of a destination district if it will hold on to people longer. >> dr. hite is going to philadelphia. that seems like a good move. >> sure. >> prince george county is the second largest in maryland with 123,000 kids, nothing to sneeze at but philadelphia is one of the biggest school districts in the nation, more of a national platform. so, he did say as it became public that he was looking at the position that he was approached, felt loyal to the district but an offer he couldn't refuse and he is going. >> so is the deputy superintendent. at first you may say she is going to ocean springs, mississippi but she is from mississippi. >> it's a return to her roots. you do see a bit when people

are promoted. we do see shuffling in the d.c. area. fairfax city got a superintendent is that was an administrator in fairfax county. >> some local or moving where you think could you grow perhaps. >> perhaps. >> so the school board says they will now try to get an interim person in there fairly quickly. >> right. >> okay. so, superintendent superintendent hyatt has 120 days on his contract. he will honor that. they want to get somebody in place so he can get on to philadelphia and they will have a lot of precedent from other areas that are recently done searches or are currently doing them. it will be good to get someone interim at the helm. it's a unique situation and sometimes the deputy can step up and fill the role. i believe that is how deputy height became the interim superintendent. >> so they are looking for -- will they look for both of

these positions at the same time or how will that play out. >> it will be interesting to see how it plays out. there could be promotion from within. an administrator could step up into the role. >> the school board said they will announce the whole process for getting this person in place in the long term. do we know what it might entail. >> it's different for every district. in general a lot of community engagement, a lot of outreach, talking to teachers what they want to see in a superintendent and often a national search is generally expected. >> you mentioned that dr. height was still technically around on the job, if you will. he is honoring his time. will he or do we have an indication that he might help in the search? >> i believe that he will. i think he has expressed that to other officials that he plans to honor his time and kind of talks that he usually has every week will turn to the

what the home should look like, the tubing and some balls and toys. >> they love to play. >> it's available at the pet store. >> correct. >> available at the arlington shelter, cute as can be. you brought in billy. let's talk about billy real quick. >> a 5-year-old male. he is vision impaired. but he doesn't know that. his world is a fuzzy world. he sees very well as far as shadows and figures. he loves to play. if you watch him play with string toys you would never know he had a vision problem. he has been checked by the vet. he is healthy. he will lead a healthy, normal life. >> being visioned impaired, what are you tips for people. >> billy gets around he is simply. you want to make sure that you don't move the furniture around or where his litter box is. he gets comfortable with his surroundings. he can jump on the furniture.

he knows heights. he is amazing. people watched him and didn't know he had a vision problem. >> how old is billy? >> about five. >> he is young. >> very young. he did live with another cat at one point and a dog but in a new household it would have to be an animal that is calm and easy going and wouldn't be chasing him or wanting to jump on him to play. if you had another cat, a mellow calm cat so he wouldn't feel intimidated. >> he is so precious. also available at the shelter now. and coming up you have the big summer fair saturday from 12:00 to 3:00 at the shelter. what is that about. >> we have the animals. you can come and visit the animals but it's a fair to get to know more about the shelter. >> you have food, entertainment. a fun day. check out the animals. >> they love to bureau
