a dc food stamp recipients who had to throw out food because of recent power outages have until tomorrow to file for reimbursement. according to the washington post. customers need to submit theth request to attest to the loss of food, and give the actual value of the food. about 140,000 people in the0, district are on food stamps.

first, i assume that anyone who gets the fax cut, if the fax cut is extended -- the tax cut, ifi the tax cut is extended, it's ad good thing. >> what under's doing, it's affecting a good portion of the population, so from that standpoint, it is definitely -- keep in mind this is less about trying to stimulate the economy today, and more about what n ppens come january 1 when the tax cuts effectively expire from the previous administration. if something's not done, wedon would see another $400 billionb for revenue. re >> as you say, not so much aboub stimulating but kind of more maintaining so that we don't have trouble in january? >> absolutely. in fact, it's more about keeping this already shaky economy from tipping over in recession. it's very possible, that without something happening about the

tax cuts that we could see the economy fall back. >> and nobody wants that. >> that's right.ri >> let's talk about what the republicans are looking for. for the most part, they are saying we want to extend the tax cuts, but we want to include everybody, not just those making less than $250,000 a year. are there some advantages toto doing that? >> well, in one sense, wee, already had that. last year, we had the debt ceiling crisis, the agreement that came out of that from both sides was let's go ahead and extend the tax cuts across the board for axeveryone and thend we'll deal with it again down a the garoad. we're back down the road again here a year later, and thisth whole issue of policy deferment, the fact we don't do anythingan seriously about comprehensive tax reform is an issue for this country as we approach the so-called fiscal cliffcl phenomenon at the end of the year. >> there's some talk of, in

fact, even nancy pelosi said let's raise that limit, insteadn of $250,000 a year, let's raise it to a million dollars a year.a what impact would that have onhv the tax cut? >> again, we're talking about putting an additional, i think it's $1.4 trillion over the course of the next ten years in terms of additional deficit as i result ciof keeping the tax cuts in place for at least the folks that are, the households makings $250,000 or less, but by and large, this has bigger impact around small businesses, for example.am the president's proposalt's yesterday talked a little about that, but 900,000 small business owners file under the individual tax code, and as a result ofesul that, they could be faced withad higher taxes as well, and we can ill afford put --pu [ indiscernible ] >> you mentioned the unemployment rate, because for

some, myself included, it's hard to get the exact correlation between the tax cut bill and unemployment. its potential impact.im >> and the timing of this is ath little funny in the sense that there really isn't much correlation between what thisat proposal is designed to do. it' designed to keep us from -- thi is nothing about trying tory inadjust a 8.2 high unemploymenn rate. >> do we know how much of a taxa increase, if they don't get the tax cut, we're talking primarily high income earners, how muchr their taxes newould go up? >> yeah, the highest marginal tax bracket is 35%. it would head to just south ofso 40% if they don't get any further relief.r re >> all right.l do you expect, you know, i don't want to insert you into the political debate, but do you expect that something will get
