>> the olympics opening ceremonies hours away. plus mitt romney gets called out by london's mayor. it's all ahead on fox 5 morning news. there's a live look outside. a little bit of haze in the atmosphere. some had rocking storms come through last night. hopefully today will be calm. this is friday, july 27th, 2012. good morning, i'm tony perkins. >> i'm alison seymour. before we talk weather in our area, take a look at this. >> wow. >> yeah. a transformer explosion north of new york city. there are severe storms across the northeast last night, knocking out power to more than 100,000 people. there were also reports of tornadoes in upstate new york. amateur video caught a possible

tornado in central pennsylvania as well last night. damaging winds from the storms brought down trees and power lines from the ohio river valley to the northeast. >> this time the bulk of it was north of us and really in pennsylvania, new jersey, new york, really hit hard. tucker barnes is here with us now with a little bit of recap, but more importantly what our forecast looks like for today. >> good morning. we're off to a warm and humid start today. we basically dodged the worst of the storms last night. risk is back and could see thunderstorms later today. be ready for that possibility. otherwise, another hot and humid friday afternoon. temperature now at reagan national, 79 degrees. 79 in washington. 74 fredericksburg. 72 in ocean city. our heat advisory is back, at least for the district and points east. heat advisory starts at 12 noon today through 7:00 tonight. much of the region, lower eastern shore, southern

maryland, parts of virginia under that advisory. air temperatures in the mid-90s and humidity will make it feel like 100 to 105 later today. lots of water, that kind of thing, if you'll be outside, out and about during the day. showers, one or two to the west. left oversprinkle north of frederick and few showers out to the west. i think things will be relatively quiet for the good part of the day. mid- to late afternoon, potential for scattered storms to redevelop along a frontal boundary. 96 today. a little better than our 100 yesterday. more details on the weekend forecast in just a minute. let's do traffic and julie wright has the latest. >> good morning, tucker. skyfox eastbound along 66. no change since the last time they were here. volume heavy and slow from fair oaks towards 123. lanes open continuing to work in towards the capital beltway.

beltway inner loop not too busy leaving braddock road headed to 66. this is the outer loop traveling into the sun from van dorn street to telegraph road in the direction of the wilson bridge. lanes are open and heavy and steady at this time. southbound 270, a different story. double nickel out of germantown. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. new this morning, in the district police are investigating a homicide. investigators say a man was shot and killed park place southeast after 1:00 this morning. that's near the intersection of minnesota and pennsylvania avenues. so far, detectives do not have a suspect nor do they have a motive. also new this morning, d.c. police are asking for help in the search for a missing 12- year-old boy. he was last seen last night

around 8:30 in the 500 block of rock creek clump northwest. if you have information, call d.c. police. the big story we're following this morning is time to place your bets on whether governor o'malley will hold a special session. >> he's expected to announce his decision later this morning. fox5's sherri ly is live at national harbor, which is a proposed site for a sixth casino. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. prince george's county has been looking at a mega casino here at national harbor, overlooking the water front. for weeks there has been no deal on expanding gambling in maryland to do that. with the governor's expected announcement a little bit later this morning, it appears the county and national harbor may soon hit the jackpot. administration sources say the governor will announce at 10:00 this morning he is calling a

special session. it's the first step. lawmakers are expected to vote on a referendum that would expand the number of casinos in the state and create a gambling commission that could compensate current casino owners are tax rates. the county executive backed the deal at national harbor. he and the governor both like the odds. >> broad consensus to be had here that will allow us to resolve this gaming issue in maryland. >> i said to the governor, it's about bringing revenues in to help the state of maryland to help prince george's county. >> reporter: a special session is no guarantee the state will expand gambling. any referendum would still have to go before voters and opponents are concerned that adding another casino to the state will hurt those that already have casinos and take away some of their customers. even if this referendum is

approved, there is no guarantee that a casino would go here at national harbor, even among the supporters there is not a consensus this should be the site of the sixth casino. back to you. >> thank you. in other news this morning, tens of thousands of civilian employees in the defense department could be notified about losing their jobs four days before the november election. some of them are concentrated in the state of virginia. the government is facing $1.2 trillion in automatic reductions in defense and domestic programs. that's part of a new law voted in by both parties last august. if the military cuts aren't averted, the layoffs would kick in january 2nd. d.c. officials are cutting the ribbon on the adams morgan district later today. it's cost about $7 million sprucing up the district. it took 17 months. the project was noisy and

disruptive for businesses there. some of those businesses ended up applying for interest-free loans from the city. take a look now at the other top stories. u.s. park police are searching for the suspect accused of sexually assaulting a woman on the capital crescent trail near the georgetown water front. the victim was jogging along wednesday night when a man attacked her from behind and choked her until she passed out. when she woke up, she started screaming and the attacker ran off. he's described as a muscular build, dreadlocks and light scruffy beard. police hope these pictures will help them found the man wanted in the abduction of cal ripken, jr.'s mother. the 74-year-old was kidnapped from her aberdeen, maryland home tuesday, forced into her car at gun point. she was found safe near her home the next day. police say the motive is

unclear. a $2,000 reward is being offered for tips leading to a conviction. the family members of the 4- year-old boy who accidently shot and killed himself in woodbridge, virginia are speaking out. kyrell mcneill died wednesday after police say he found a loaded gun inside the family's pickup truck outside his home. according to his grandmother, the truck was locked, but he got inside by climbing through a sliding back window. that's when he found the gun. she is mourning the loss of her began son, but -- grandson but is not blaming anyone for his death. but she thinks guns are too available. >> the pain is just, it's too much. i've never experienced -- i've experienced death of parents, but never a child. no. i hate guns. i realize that in certain jobs you have to have them or

they're required of you. but there are too many. >> kyrell lived with his mother, stepfather and five brothers. the family is still trying to figure out the funeral arrangements. his grandmother says they could really use help. if you want to donate, head to myfoxdc.com for the information. the suspect in the colorado movie massacre claims he doesn't remember the shooting rampage. "the new york daily news" is reporting that james holmes keeps asking jail guards, "why am i here." the newspaper says he is complaining about the food at the detention center where he is. the former honor student reportedly picks at his meals, sometimes doesn't eat anything. jail guards think he may be faking the memory loss. the white house is signaling there will be no push for new gun control laws, but says the president will try to find ways to work around the stalemate in congress.

the race for the white house -- >> republican presidential candidate mitt romney continues his overseas tour, but he may have hit a big speed bump along the way. doug luzader has more. >> reporter: mitt romney is going to attend the opening ceremonies for the olympics in london today, hoping for a fresh start. mitt romney was looking for images like these, meetings with world leaders in an almost presidential setting. what he didn't expect was this. >> i hear there's a guy, a guy called mitt romney, who wants to know whether or not we're ready, he wants to know whether we're ready. are we ready? >> reporter: that was the mayor of london, reacting to romney's comments from the day before when he spoke of some of the problems that london's olympics organizers were running into. >> that is not something that which is encouraging. >> reporter: that may not have registered in the u.s. but in

london, it was taken as an affront, touching off a feeding frenzy, romney had to backtrack. >> all the mistakes, and i made a few, all those are overwhelmed by the many things the athletes carry out that capture the spirit of the game. >> reporter: but the plan took away from one of his goals on the trip, eaching out to u.s. allies, that have times felt snubbed by the obama administration. and even a conservative commenter was dumbfounded. >> it's unbelievable, beyond human understanding. i'm out of adjectives. all the man has to do is say nothing. >> reporter: romney tried to get back on track last night. at a fundraiser he told guests he'll return a bust of winston churchill to the oval office, something the president removed soon after he took office. a man claims to be the

sandusky in a university shower has now come forward. his lawyers are planning to sue the university and hold it accountable for the horrific abuse he says he endured. so far, no comment from penn state. san dunk e was convicted of abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period last month. he has not yet been sentenced. there will be another news outlet in the big easy. new orleans national public radio station, wwwnofm is expanding with a nonprofit multimedia newsroom. it will be broadcast on the radio, web and mobile devices. it will produce indepth local reporting. tony, i don't know why we're reporting this. i don't know why. in case you travel down to the big easy, you can check out the newly expanded wwno fm. >> we're tight on time this morning, we could cut that story. there you go.

[ romney ] i'm mitt romney and i approve this message. scene at a post office in silver spring, maryland, a customer was stabbed at the facility on new hampshire avenue during business hours. witnesses say a man got angry because he thought someone was cutting in line. a spokesperson for the post office said two workers stepped in to help, setting off pepper spray, or basically spraying pepper spray, and that may have saved the victim's life. the attacker got away, but was arrested a short time later. we're learning new details about the suspect accused of

infecting dozens of patients with hepatitis c. an arizona valley hospital official says the man was fired after someone found him passed out in a men's locker room with a syringe nearby. investigators say he fed a drug habit by injecting himself with medicine before then using the dirty needles on patients. it's unclear if anyone connected to the suspect in arizona has contracted hepatitis c. he also worked at four hospitals in maryland. officials say they are contacting hundreds of patients from those facilities. it is 7:28 now on this friday morning. coming up next on fox 5 -- [ chanting] ] >> tensions rising over chick- fil-a's stance on same-sex marriage. the latest statements from the food chain. and a representative from the human rights campaign will join us in studio to weigh in on this.

unveiled the trucks. gay rights groups have called for a boycott, and politicians in boston and chicago told the chain they are not welcome there, and aren't welcome to expand there. in the meantime, supporters are throwing their support, promising to buy sandwiches and fries next week on chick-fil-a appreciation day. paul, good morning to you. >> good morning. how are you? >> at first glance, you'll say, what is going on here? this is like, i mean, it's good food, but it's fast food. this is a fast food chain, throwing itself in this whole political arena. what do you make of it? >> they didn't have to do it. they decided to make statements that are anti-gay and we're going to expose them for it. >> so it's 2012. do you think the company felt -- didn't maybe understand the country now is in a whole, going in a different direction as far as human rights and, you know, i know people stand on

both sides of this, but it seems like an antiquated view. >> times are changing and we're seeing the lead in corporate america. most companies have come out in support on quality in marriage and other issues. they really stick out as one of the few anti-gay companies. >> i wanted to read a statement here that the ceo put out. a part of his statement was, the company has always applied bibbcally based principles -- >> does this fall in line with what's going on now, in your opinion? >> that sounds to me like they're willing to take our

money and still discriminate. >> okay, okay. let's talk about what's happening to them now. financially. if it comes down to money, boston's mayor has said, no thank you to the chain. chicago's mayor has said no thank you to expanding there. and groups like your own are out there in front bringing this problem to the forefront. what do you want to happen, i guess, from this? >> first of all, we are not calling for a boycott. that's not something we do. we're raising awareness of what chick-fil-a is about and what they've been doing. they have the rights to their own opinions. so do the mayor of chicago and the mayor of boston. they've made their choice and they're speaking up after listening to chick-fil-a speak up in their anti-lgbt ways. >> can a chain -- can it go forward and exist? i guess in the larger cities where you have a more diverse population, is this possibly a death nail for this company?

>> that's tough to say. they may be okay going forward financially. i don't know. again, we're not calling for a boycott. it seems out of step with america, where the people are and where the rest of corporate america is. >> as far as human rights campaign goes, what do you do moving forward now to keep this in the forefront? >> we're going to keep an eye on them, and it's not just about their president speaking against marriage equality. they're giving money to groups, some which have been designated as hate groups. when they sit there and say we will no longer speak on this issue, if they continue to give money to these hate groups, they are in fact speaking up on this issue and we'll be keeping an eye on them and we'll be calling them out whenever we need to. >> thanks for coming in, talking about this today. >> my pleasure. >> you never know when a political fire storm will pop up. this is paul, the deputy press

apparently katherine jackson might not be that torn up about her on going family drama involving her grandchildren. her jackson said the two met yesterday and she is doing fine. this comes days after a judge decided to temporarily suspend her as guardian. the lawyer also says she was laughing about a report claiming she had a stroke. that's one person's opinion. put it out there. she's a strong woman. been through a lot. who are we to say?

looks like life won't imitate art for the stars of "twilight." robert pattinson and kristin stewart are on the fritz. according to people magazine, pattinson has moved out of the couple's home. this comes a day after stewart issued a public apology about an affair she had with married director rupert sanders, who i never heard of until all of this. the scandal comes to light weeks after sanders's wife revealed the couple was having marital problems. she told you magazine they were going through hard times, but was convinced the main difficulties had passed. we know way too much about all this. ross quit her modeling career to move to l.a. with sanders. the couple have two children. this should be a private matter, shouldn't it? it's all being played out -- talking in magazines and

four bags to be contaminated with germs, specifically e. coli is a common one people generally know. actually they also found men's wallets, so men are not off the hook here, are about four times germier than purses. we find germs on door knobs and our desks, for example, and the keyboards and the mice we use at our computers. germs are present on a lot of inanimate objects. they can survive from hours to months. you can clean those objects and you can remove those germs. the number one thing we can do is wash our hands with soap and water. >> right. give us an idea, i mean, there are a lot of different places, you mentioned earlier you have your own bag, you're quite sure it's germy as well. where we sit down, if you're on metro, or if you set your bag down on the bathroom floor, are

these the biggest culprits, where are we picking up most of the germs? >> right. i think people need to be smart thinking about where they're going to put their bags down. bathrooms as you mentioned. hospital floors probably not a good place to sit your bag down. and also on the metro as you mentioned. places where there's lots of traffic, potential for fecal contamination. so thinking about those places. reusable bags -- >> everybody is using these now. go to the grocery store, and you take your reusable bag. >> we're putting meat and poultry that are often found to carry drug resistant bacteria into these bags. just washing these bags can remove about 99.9% of the germs. >> you can wash those. for the handbags, good to keep wipes around, wipe these down as well? >> yeah. surfaces for example on this

barred the university of colorado from releasing any records for shooting suspect james holmes. he spent a year studying neuroscience there. a judge says releasing the records would impede the investigation. lawmakers are honoring the victims. congress adopted a resolution yesterday that recognizing the people who tried to help and protect the victims, including first spenders. d.c. police investigating a deadly shooting from overnight. it happened around 1:00 this morning along the 2300 block of park place southeast. still no word on a suspect or a motive. day two of redskins training camp kicks off today in ashburn. >> the second day in a row the talk of the town will be the man known as rg3. our dave ross is live on the sidelines with a look at what

unique. >> yes. i wish -- you know, i could say it's his respect for my mind. but he has a book to sell. it's more for lawyers. it's an interesting book, because it explains his judicial philosophy and basically what he says is, look, stop applying the living or the spirit or whatever the constitution, apply the text. when it says the right to bear arms, that's what it means, the right to bear arms. some say, you know, if you start reading, you know, the 18th century constitution, you're going to start judging as an 18th century judge would, and there's been a lot of changes in the word. but he very much defends and es spouses this idea of textualism. we'll get into roe vs. wade, the heller case.

attorneys for an alleged victim in the jerry sandusky scandal released voice mails they say are between sandusky and so-called victim number two. sandusky was convicted on 45 counts of child sex abuse. in syria, the united states is warning of a possible massacre. the warning from the obama administration says syrian tasks are surrounding the city. the state department says the u.s. has grave concerns about the tanks and fighter jets being used in the densely populated city. another hot one yet. it will be another hot one today. tucker barnes is here with details. >> yeah. yesterday 100 degrees for the

children that were inside safe. tony? thank you very much. when the new 495 express lanes open later this year, there will be a new way to pay to ride on them. vdot announced its rolling out the e-zpass flex plan, allowing drivers to switch between toll- free and toll travel lanes with a flip of a switch. joining us now live to explain, is vdot communications director. tamara, are you there? >> i am, and good morning to you. >> good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm going to jump right in, because i have a lot of questions. first of all, what exactly is the e-zpass flex system and this new transponder, the thing we put on our cars? >> it's very similar in looks to the existing standard transponder you may have, except for the flex transponder has a switch, in which you can switch from the nonhov mode to the hov mode and you will be able to use this on the 495 express lanes, which are

scheduled to open by the end of this year, and the really neat thing about it is if you carpool, you'll need three people in the car, yourself, two or more people. you'll be able to ride those lanes for free. what is really exciting, for the first time, hov lanes on the capital beltway. we're looking forward to that. >> does it essentially, when you flip the switch, does it turn the transponder off so that the system isn't reading it or what's it doing? >> it doesn't turn it off, but it turns it to the hov mode. and the equipment that will be on the express lanes will be able to read which mode you're in, whether you are in the nonhov mode, if you're driving alone, it will be able to pick that up. or if you're in the hov mode. through the technology it can pick that up and charge accordingly. if you're carpooling, you can ride those lanes for free. if you're driving alone or one or two people in the car, you would pay a toll to ride in

those lanes. >> if i already have an e-zpass transponder, do i need to buy the new flex one? >> you can still use your standard transponder, but if you want to carpool, you will need to get a flex. we are encouraging carpooling, because that's the way to move more people with fewer cars. it's a way to reduce congestion, and finally we'll now have these great hov lanes that will open that will provide transportation choices that were never available before. >> in i don't get the flex, i have the old transponder and driving in the old hov lanes, am i needlessly paying a toll? >> yes. you'll want to get a flex new plan to carpool. you can switch it from single drive to carpool mode. >> how does the flex know i've got three or more people in the car? >> well, if you have three or more people -- well, you would have to have two or more people in the car. it would be yourself and two or

more people. you would flip it. a major part of this project, it will be heavily enforced to make sure there won't be violators. >> i see. police enforcement. >> yes. >> not the transponder itself, the police -- >> exactly. >> okay. how much does the new transponder cost? >> the new transponder, if you use it in the carpool mode, exclusively in the 495 express lanes, there will be no monthly fee. however, if you use it in standard mode or use it on other facilities, there will be a dollar fee that will kick in the first of the year. that would be the monthly fee for the flex transponder. if you use the flex in the nonhov mode, you would pay a variable toll when on the express lanes. >> okay. i think i'm confused by that. if i have an old transponder, if i buy the new one, can i turn in the old one and get credit or anything? >> you can exchange your trance

not just between two political parties, or even two people. it's a choice between two very different plans for our country. governor romney's plan would cut taxes for the folks at the very top. roll back regulations on big banks. and he says that if we do, our economy will grow and everyone will benefit. but you know what? we tried that top down approach. it's what caused the mess in the first place. i believe the only way to create an economy built to last is to strengthen the middle class. asking the wealthy to pay a little more so we can pay down our debt in a balanced way. so that we can afford to invest in education, manufacturing, and home-grown american energy for good middle class jobs. sometimes politics can seem very small. but the choice you face, it couldn't be bigger. ♪ i'm barack obama and i approve this message.
