that's the good news in all of this. good news here, too. more than 6.7 million young adults in the country are out of school, out of work and disconnected from the economic mainstream. at the same time, major companies in various sectors are in need of quality entry level talent. there's a new book out detailing ways to bring these two groups together. joining us now is gerald chertavian, he is the author of "a year up, how a pioneering program teaches young adults real skills for real jobs with real success." thank you for coming in. good to have you here. >> thank you. >> this really is about the year up program, which you founded and has been on going since 2000, i believe, for some time now. i want to mention the title, great title. i love that, rediscovering america and the talent within. that's what this is all about. talk about, first of all, the population that you are trying to serve here. younger people, many of whom,
9:16 am
most of whom from disadvantaged backgrounds. >> that's right. we serve 18 to 24-year-olds in nine cities across the country, here in the capital region as well been established about six years. it's really young people who have come out of high school, but didn't have that next step to get into the mainstream of this country. many of our young people have had barriers, coming out of the foster care system, housing instability in the past. but fundamentally, they're motivated young people who want the access and the opportunity to realize their potential. >> you've referred to that gap there as an opportunity divide. because they don't have some of the opportunities that others have? >> that's correct. we unfortunately live in a country where one's potential can sometimes be limited by things like their zip code, bank balance of their parents, the school system they attended and color of their skin.
9:17 am
we don't feel those are appropriate limiters on those individuals. >> there are some who look at that population, and no one likes to generalize about a group of people, but some people look at that population and say, they're not motivated, otherwise they'd try harder, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. but you have found that not to be the case. >> no, not at all. in fact, having served 6,000 young people across the country and know that as they get into the companies we place them into, those companies are saying, we want more young people who look like this. and they're adding to the talent pipeline for the best companies in america. we work with google, facebook, to state street, j.p. morgan. >> hundreds of companies now. >> 250 companies across the country. those companies are telling us, we want and need more skilled workers in the young adults you're able to provide to us

are a pipeline of talent to help fuel our companies. >> obviously it's hard to get super detailed in a interview like this. but tell us what the program does. >> it's a one-year program, hence the name year up. six months of intensive training and development, followed by a six-month internship with one of those 250 organizations. after the end of the year, 85% of our graduates are able to earn more than $15 per hour, oring enrolled in college full- time. what we think about it, one year to go from poverty to a professional career. >> that's extraordinary. this is a big problem. many people see the problem. it's hard to get a handle on it and do something about it. you did. my understanding is that this kind of started, you were a big brother for many years. >> uh-huh.
9:19 am
>> to some other kids, disadvantaged youth and that opened your eyes? >> that's right. i've been a big brother now about 30 years. a 10-year-old boy at the 80s who lived in that point in new york city. i saw he was talented, motivated, hungry, but didn't have the access and opportunity he needed. that was really the inspiration. the reason we wrote the book is to help shine a spotlight on something working in this country, working for our economy and connecting young people with employers who really need a skilled workforce today. >> certainly in this political environment, it is very inspirational to read about a program that is helping young people. the book just came out and it debuts at number 8 on the "new york times" best seller list. >> that's right. and we believe many people in this country can help provide opportunities to others and
9:20 am
hope the book will inspire others to do so as well. >> congratulations on your success and congratulations to all the young people taking the initiative to go through the program. we have information about a book signing taking place tomorrow in baltimore. you can talk to gerald chertavian and get more insight about the book and pick up the book as well. thank you. >> thank you very much. >> my pleasure. coming up, why some couples say a mini baby boom may be on the horizon. plus conrad murray reaches out to katherine jackson. first, let's check back in with sarah. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we are covering everything handbag related this morning. how to keep them germ-free and the most fashion forward you'll find at the department store. what about all of us out there that are on a budget? we have covered this morning. we have plenty of beautiful handbags and wait until you find out how much some of these cost. you won't believe this. that's coming up on fox 5 morning news. stay with us. the first time i saw fios, itit was absolutely amazing.
