joining us on the phone with more -- >> there are two right lanes letting traffic get through. it turned out to be a four- vehicle crash. there's one serious injury. no one else was injured in it. the cleanup will continue for a while, because the trailer erupted and we're still in the cleanup process now. >> is the injury to the truck, the tractor-trailer truck driver or someone in the other vehicle? >> the other vehicle. the original vehicle that was changing lanes and struck one of the other cars that caused the crash, that gentleman has been transported to the fairfax hospital with serious injuries. >> can you tell us what you expect now as far as a time line? i know this just happened within the past hour. but for folks trying to move around there, what are you

>> we'll have more on that as becomes necessary later in the hour. while you were sleeping, there was another earthquake. it gently rocked the area. the magnitude 2.4 earthquake hit just before 12:45 this morning. it was centered down to our south near mineral, virginia. you may remember that area sustained heavy damage in last year's magnitude 5.8 earthquake. let's head downstairs and get the latest on the weather with tucker barnes. >> it's warm, certainly humid outside. later this afternoon we'll see a few popup showers and storms develop. temperatures only in the mid- 80s. cooler than what we've gotten used to for the past month here, month of july. you can see the live look at the cloud cover. kind of partly sunny start here in the immediate washington area. bigger cloud cover with a few showers on the lower eastern shore. had thunderstorm activity overnight, too. i would expect we'll see showers and storms kind of redevelop this afternoon, just

like yesterday. bring along an umbrella and be ready for that possibility. good news, the cloud cover will hold down temperatures a little bit. temperature right now at reagan national, 77 degrees. but our afternoon highs will only reach the mid-80s. cooler than where we've been. 82% humidity. winds out of the east at 9 miles per hour. partial sunshine. scattered afternoon showers and storms return. highs in the mid-80s. 86 here in washington. i'll have more details on the forecast. 90 on the five-day. that's coming up. tony, back to you. thank you very much. new this morning, a string of shootings across d.c. overnight. this morning police are trying figure out what happened and whether there's a connection between these shootings. >> it started before midnight and ended with a deadly shooting. sherri ly has details this morning. >> reporter: good morning. just a couple of minutes ago police cleared this crime scene

in northeast. we had officers out here combing through the grass, looking for any evidence that may have been missed last night. this was the third shooting in d.c. overnight. this one, the only one, that was deadly. police are keeping the area blocked off, or had kept the area blocked off all night at brook street and northeast as they tried to piece together what happened. investigators went over the area inch by inch, taking measurements and searching for clues. a neighbor says the man was shot and killed in the driveway. police say he had been shot in the back. this happened around 11:45 last night. within 30 minutes of two other shootings that wounded three people. the first one of those on alabama avenue at 11:15 last night. the second shooting about 15 minutes later on naylor road in southeast. three people in all wounded. they are expected to survive. investigators say they have no information that links these three shootings and no word on

the suspects in any of those shootings, whether police have made any arrests. a neighbor tells us that she heard at least five shots last night, that police got here very, very quickly and were able to respond. but apparently by the time the police got here, this gunman was already gone. that's the latest in northeast. back to you. >> sherri, thank you very much. just over the d.c. line detectives in prince george's county are looking into a shooting that happened around midnight. they found a man injured in capitol heights. he had been shot on jansen avenue. teenagers had been drinking beer with the 54-year-old and now are charged as adults.

police found the victim beaten by a shovel and left by the side of newton street. police say the 15-year-old and 17-year-old admitted to the crime. in news making national headlines, this morning in chicago the jury is set and opening statements are scheduled in the murder trial of former policeman drew peterson. he's charged with killing his third wife, kathleen salvo. his lawyers say he's calm and confident. prosecutors think a costly divorce settlement may have prompted him to kill his third wife. the man accused in the colorado movie massacre is now formally charged with murder. james holmes sat silently without reacting as the charges were read. he faces 142 counts, including 24 counts of first degree murder, and 116 counts of attempted murder. holmes is accused of killing 12 people and injuring 58 others

during the midnight premier of "the dark knight rises." prosecutors could file additional charges. it is still unclear if they're going to seek the death penalty. more than a thousand fans are showing their support for penn state football. they joined a pep band to greet players gathering for offseason workouts this morning. the early morning rally comes as former starting quarterback ron bolden and backup safety tim buckley leave the team in the wake of the sanctions following the sandusky child sex abuse scandal. and star runningback silas red may be next. another big story today. a bill that would ban late term abortions in the district is up for a vote in the house. the bill is sponsored by republican arizona representative trent franks. it would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. supporters say that's when a

fetus can begin to feel pain. opponents, including congresswoman eleanor holmes norton say the bill is part of a campaign to overturn roe v. wade. >> we afford more protection to farm animals to keep them from having to go through unnecessary pain. >> they're trying to eliminate reproductive choice. don't come at us to make your ideological points. we are not your pawns. >> groups on both sides of the debate will be scoring the bill, or tracking lawmakers' votes. tony? allison, in the race for the white house, mitt romney is wrapping up his trip abroad today with a speech in the polish capital. he didn't directly criticize possible, but praised poland's economy. before leaving israel yesterday, he said israel's

culture allowed its economy to surpass the palestinians. that sparked calls of racism and a misunderstanding of israel's occupation of palestine. president barack obama will appear at loudoun county high school today. he arrived back at the white house last night after a fundraiser at the nomad hotel in new york. it raked in about $2.5 million for the campaign. the president told donors romney's camp is spending "like nobody's business." and democrats have to raise more to fight back. today's visit is part of a battle state tour. he'll also visit orlando florida, and akron ohio. genologists say they've made an interesting discovery. >> ancestry.com says it can claim president obama may be related to the first black african enslaved for life in america. sarah simmons has more to share this interesting story. >> it is. this is a new study from

ancestry.com, which says there is evidence the president could be a de descendant of an african slave. it's been reported in the past his ancestors weren't slaves. the president's black father was from kenya, his white mother from kansas. the web site says a team of researchers found the president's mother's mixed race family line marries to trace back to one of the first documented african slaves in the u.s. the company says the president could be the 11th great grandson of a slave in virginia. the company says two years of efforts have not established a definitive link because of gaps in family history. the white house has failed to report. interesting in and of itself. >> thank you. coming up, pepco's first report following that deadly derecho storm that left

pepco is out with a self- assessment following the storm that knocked out power to hundreds of thousands. it says they were ready, but the storm was supposed to weaken. who said that? the report also says pepco crews first took care of life- threatening situations like live downed wires. when it was all over, they had replaced almost 250 power poles, 215 transformers and 373,000 feet of wires and cables over the entire area.

beach goers on alert at cape cod after a possible shark attack. a man suffered from bites on his legs while swimming at boston beach. officials say they have been confirmed what caused the wounds -- haven't confirmed what caused the wounds, but according to witnesses a shark fin emerged from the water shortly after he was attacked. beaches have closed several times this summer because of shark sightings. most pregnant women know what they put or don't put in their bodies is more important to the well-being of their baby. many might not know what they are putting on their skin is as important. joining us is board certified dermatologist, dr. lisa ginn, and my personal dermatologist. good to see you. >> good to see you. >> we're talking how skin

i treat it all the time. >> one of my pregnant friends wants to know if acne can pop up in the middle of pregnancy? >> absolutely. it's the first step of unconditional love for your baby. >> that is so funny. let's talk about how do we fight this? are there ways? because we're so cautious about bug, eating the wrong fish and doing other things. the mercury and all this kind of thing. can things be harmful, some of the products we use? >> they can. one of the biggest take home messages is realizing because you buy something in a drugstore doesn't mean it's safe during pregnancy. fda has a system we use. runs a through x. a is very safe. and x has to be avoided. i tend to stay in the a to b range. i'm conservative, but i want to get high impact results, but safe. what i've done is i have products here that range from what you can get in the

drugstore to a speciality skin care store, to which you really want to get from a doctor's office and have guidance as far as how use. the good thing is that the building blocks for good skin care regiment in generally don't change. >> are there ingredients to look out for? >> there are. probably the biggest things are the products that contain common ingredients that are actually category c for pregnancy, meaning we don't know if there's harm. so i recommend only using those under the guidance of a dermatologist and in limited amounts. those include products that contain benz online benz

the d.c. commute should be easier for thousands of drivers who take the 11th street bridge. a new onramp that links 295 to the bridge is now open. where the entire project, when it's finished, commute time should be cut as much as 10 minutes. then comes development. officials say one day the river front will be bustling with new businesses, homes, and entertainment. a western maryland boy with a genetic disease will be reunited with his stolen tricycle today. >> ethan paul is seven years old and suffers from a syndrome that means he has little muscle tone and gains weight easily.

welcome back. we want to update you on that breaking news coming from the beltway. police say at least one person was seriously injured in this accident at 495 approaching the springfield mixing bowl. you can see there it's a different angle than we've been giving you. more like a street level angle of this accident. the overturned tractor-trailer. we're told four cars were involved in this one. moving to another story now, tornadoes, they usually happen on the great plains. but check this one out. it's in the rocky mountains. this was recorded just west of denver over the weekend. and at about 12,000 feet, the national weather service says it may be the second highest tornado on record.

gotten better in his timing and accuracy in practice since. the coaching staff has had griffin concentrating on short and mid-range passes, not so much with the deep stuff. yesterday griffin spoke for the first time since camp began and was brutally honest in his own assessment. >> day one of training camp, you know, everyone is amped up, lot of jitters. we did some things good, but some bad. we hit everything that was closely contested. and we missed everything that was wide open. so i think we've made strides since then, since day one. i'm proud of the offense. but by no means are we satisfied. we definitely have gotten better since day one. >> i've been impressed the way he handles himself on and off the football. he's an overchiefer with a lot of talent. when you have a guy like that, you have a chance to get better and your team has a chance to get better. >> reporter: now, on the other
