time to say good morning, today our facebook fan of the day is janet. she says she earned the title of being one of our biggest fans for two decadecannot start the day without watching she says fox 5 keeps getting better every day thank you so much. for a chance to be tomorrow's fan of the day log on to our facebook page and tell us why you should be tomorrow's fan of the day. >> very good thank you janet. top secret briefings and seminars on daring disguises, there is one summer event that puts kids skills and street smarts to the test. that is spy camp. >> this morning fox 5s holly morris is learning all about it. that was so cool in the ducts
7:53 am
like that. awesome. good morning. >> not crawling in our ducts with the station. >> yeah. >> at least not wearing that. >> i will have to watch you a different way. i am in training. move over agent 007, because 005 that is what i coined myself is learning the tricks of the trade. this is one of the coolest camps around, spy camp you can only do it here, international spy museum where we are live. we are doing our daily briefing from the top. good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> thanks for having us here. >> we are delighted to have you here. >> it is always so intriguing to be here. let's talk about how spy camp works,. >> i think that is your -- you are the creator. >> spy camp is based on real spy trade craft which i have learned from the best right over here and the kids run missions through the week, we run a story line, through the whole week i cannot divulge to
7:54 am
you the classified secrets they are working on but suffice to say -- [ overlapping voices ] >> the kids run missions throughout the city you see any children with mustaches, it is probably our recruits. >> got you. >> and they are working very very hard on this mission, and hopefully, they will accomplish their goal by friday. >> if you want to give a camp cred that is where peter comes in. if you are not familiar with peter he spent 35 years cia, 25 clandestine services mostly europe and middle east. the things kids are learning how real are the tactics. >> actually what they are learning is very real we just bring it down to their level. in other words the whole thing spies do is communicate with one another in a secret way. that is why you get into things like these dead drop sites,
7:55 am
signals, wearing disguises, that is all real stuff. i was cold war. if you look at the arrests of the russian illegals, and they were using the paraphernalia of espionage. they were using signals, they were using codes, they were using secret ways of communicating and they were using dead drops. so these -- the principles of what you see here, and what you see the kids doing are very much the same principles that have been employed and espionage for centuries. >> real quickly tell me some of the things the kids -- some of these spy gadgets they might be using. >> sure they do a lot with concealment devices they are unloading dead drops around the city. for instance they may go to a park and know exactly where their dead drop site is and this is like no other rock this is a spy rock they may unload their dead drop inside here may
7:56 am
be a coded message they might then use a decipher wheel once they know the key and they are receiving communication from a missing agent. they cannot meet with this agent personally so they are using impersonal communication threw dead drops and messages. >> this whole time while you thing i might just be wearing -- looks like peanut butter but something special is inside you might think i am wearing a regular watch, this is really, a secret watch, look at this, if i do this, can you see in there? i can record them and what they are saying, right there. look at that. pretty nifty. >> you are spying on the side >> does that make me a double agent? >> not quite. >> that is spy camp week two. okay myfoxdc.com is our website we have a link to international spy museum and listen spy camp is only this week and next week

herndon. back to you. as of today women nationwide can say good-bye to a copay for the pill. >> it is one of the most controversial parts of the affordable care act. but as of today, insurance companies are now required to provide fda-approved contraceptives at no cost. the obama administration says the changes will help as many as 47 million women. the free pill is just one of eight health benefits for women insurance companies must now provide for free including mammograms, prenatal care, screenings for cervical cancer, and domestic violence counseling. in the meantime a gop- backed bill criticized as an attack on women's reproductive rights died in the house. it would have banned abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy based on data saying that a fetus feels pain at that stage. it failed by 220-154. d.c. congresswoman eleanor holmes norton was an outspoken
8:06 am
critic of the legislation calling it an attack on the right protected by roe v. wade. and an attack on d.c.'s home rule. and she joins us now live from capitol hill with her reaction. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> tell me how you're feeling today. >> i tell you, it was hand-to- hand combat from the introduction of the bill in the hearing when they refused my request to even testify on a bill that affected only d.c. residents so in the end the victory was very, very sweet. they fell 30 votes short of what they needed to pass this bill. we in the district feel like this was a victory for home rule. it was certainly a victory for women in the district. and it was a victory for physicians in the district. but this bill had nationwide implications. the d.c. label on the bill
8:07 am
didn't fool anybody. and we had lots of allies. planned parenthood, naral pro- choice america, women's groups who all over america had this bill front and center. in the end pro-choice america won for d.c. and we won for the woman who would have been affected because if you think you can get roe vs. wade here, you will get it everywhere. it's a nationwide decision. and this bill was about the national right of women for reproductive health. >> needed that two-thirds majority to pass, didn't do that. so my question is, you see this as an attack on home rule. how do you move forward and making sure that provisions like this don't pass for d.c.? >> well, we have already done that for this bill. but we do have one rider on an
8:08 am
appropriation and that's one we're still trying to get off that keeps from us using our own local funds -- local funds now for abortions for women the way states and cities all over the country do. but understand what a departure this bill was. this wasn't your usual, let's do a rider on a d.c. appropriations bill that will affect d.c. women and usually low income women. this was the first stand-alone bill in the history of the country where the district was attacked and where the attempt was made to take out of the specter of constitutional rights that everybody enjoys. it would have said roe vs. wade constitutional right to reproductive choice announced almost 40 years ago applies everywhere except the district

of columbia, an unprecedented bill. we had to pull out all the stops to defeat this bill. >> switching gears for a moment, congresswoman, talk about these defense cuts these across the board reductions to the tune of $110 billion slated for january. this affects a whole lot of people here in the district. the president has said that uniformed military personnel are exempt from this. but how does congress go forward with this? what's your position on these defense cuts? >> well, you're talking about a sequester. and that's the sort of damocles over the heads of the congress, particularly republicans who refuse to compromise and get anything done. so everybody agreed unless there is some -- an offer that we can't refuse, we're not likely to get very far. and i predict that the sequester will do it. it's not just the defense cuts. they would have terrible effects in the district and throughout the region. it would have equal effects for
8:10 am
the domestic side. so the defense people are speaking up because they have better lobbies. but the other side, the nondefense side, which is spread across virtually every part of the budget of every state and locality, is in equal jeopardy and i predict that that jeopardy will fade as everyone faces what nobody wants to happen and actually correct something you said earlier. you keep saying that mammograms and contraceptives and what the healthcare bill allows to go into effect today is free. free. women have paid for this with their health insurance. but insurers were requiring copays for that kind of care without providing copays for the kind of care that, for example, men get.
8:11 am
all this does is to say, look, women and men are going to be treated equally. when you pay for health insurance, and almost everybody pays for some insurance themselves, employer pays for some of it certainly federal employees are like that, they won't be able to say, you can get your contraceptives and your mammogram but you will have to pay extra for that. nothing is free in america. nothing is free in the healthcare bill. we all pay for it. >> very well said. thank you for that indeed. thank you very much, congresswoman. >> my pleasure. >> all right. tony. >> thank you very much. it is 11 minutes after 8:00 now. another big story on capitol hill, the future of the post office. barring any help from congress, today the u.s. postal service will likely default on a $5 billion treasury loan. the mail service owes the money in healthcare prepayments. the default some would say is largely symbolic only because it won't impact employee pay or mail delivery.

showers on the east side of the beltway towards 50 very light but probably enough to wet the road and a few showers in fact this is a thunderstorm not too long ago now just south and west of leesburg and more showers to the north and east of baltimore. earlier that was some good thunderstorm activity that pushed across the bay in the early-morning hours. the bigger picture warm and humid air mass in place and it's not going to take a lot to fire up more showers and more thunderstorms later today. and we think the trigger today will be this weak cold front that will be pushing in from the north and west. the front is going to fall apart before it moves on through. and behind the front the air is not cooler but it's slightly drier so tomorrow, we are going to be hot but the humidity will be in check so that's good news but you can see the cloud cover at this hour there will be some peeks of sunshine during the course of the day like yesterday kind of a partly sunny midday and showers and thunderstorms will fill in later this afternoon. current temperatures, not terrible. 74 in washington. 73 this morning in quantico. 70 in leonardtown, showers and thunderstorms overnight.

8:35 am
you have a lot of stuff there. >> reporter: the conventional wisdom says use a bug spray with deet, wear clothing with long sleeves all works great but chances are, you're already doing that stuff. so let's talk about mother nature as it relates to mosquitos. planting things like rosemary or catnip, marigolds or citronella grass in your garden will help to naturally repel mosquitos from your landscape. also when you have bushes and shrubs it's important to keep them trimmed back nice and tight. that helps to eliminate the standing water by exposing it to the sun and wind and helping it to evaporate. also talking about wind this is obviously a much smaller scale than what would you use but did you know that mosquitos don't like flying through any sort of steady breeze? so adding some outdoor fans to your outdoor living space will not only help keep you cool, but it will help to keep them away. >> i like that, very good. let me ask you, because i see you have there on the table light bulbs. what about these outdoor
8:36 am
lights? we have those yellow bug lights but they are not the most attractive thing in the world. >> /lot of people say they have to get the outdoor yellow light t works because it has a frequency to which mosquitos are not attracted. well, thank god for technology. l.e.d. lights have a natural element to repel mosquitos. standing water, you have to get rid of the standing water. that's where mosquitos breed. but some folks have things on their property that they can't get rid of the standing water like a rain barrel or birdbath or fish pond. so what you can do is add a product with something called bti in it. it's a natural bacteria. here's how it works. pop the disk in the standing water and the mosquitos are attracted to it. they eat it and then it kills them reducing the number of pests on your property.

so far, we have spent a whole lot of time talking about the redskins young offense. >> yup. today though dave ross goes one on one with veteran linebacker lorenzo alexander. dave is live in ashburn with more. i like lorenzo alexander. >> he is one of my favorite guys in the locker room and the impressive thing about zo, the one man gang, he played on various lines, defensive, outside linebacker last year, insideline backer this year, the captain of the special teams, what can he do? i don't know that there's anything he can't do. i went one on one with the man.
8:41 am
we call him a one-man gang yesterday before practice. we talk about inside linebacker. how does that feel when you hear that? >> feels good. you know, just another position on my resume' this year trying to help the team. i'm running from london every day. so i guess it's been a big experience so far. >> what's the biggest adjustment outside to inside. >> reporter: the route recognition. understanding what receivers are trying to do with tight end and receivers and i have to call the defenses get everybody set. those are probably two of the biggest things so i have to know everything and where everybody is at and being a cal guy isn't that hard. >> cal guys are smart guy. >> so you can handle it. i enjoy it. it's probably the most natural position. >> what position haven't you played? >> right. >> it seems like you have played almost every position. >> quarterback is probably the only one i haven't played. >> can you play quarterback? >> hand it off, yes, give it to roy. i can do that.
