74 in washington. 70 this morning in frederick. 64 degrees in winchester and 69 in ocean city. here's your forecast for the day. you will see a little sunshine here and there. high temperatures upper 80s to about 90. and again, a lot of humidity in the forecast for your wednesday. more details on the weather. we'll have a look at the weekend in a while. back to you. new this morning, police are searching for the driver in a deadly hit-and-run. it happened early this morning on center street in herndon, virginia. that's where police discovered a woman dead in a parking lot. fox 5's sherri ly is live on the scene with the latest. >> reporter: tony and allison, police found that woman's body in this condo parking lot right over here. you can see they have the markings on the pavement where her body was found. earlier this morning, we also saw police focus on a ground floor condo here. they were going in and out. it is right next to where the body was found.

police will tell us that this condo is connected to the case but they aren't saying if that woman lived there. numerous people called 911 after hearing the deadly hit- and-run. police say the woman was struck by a vehicle in the parking lot of the lifestyle condos an left to die. she has not been identified. at the same time, about a block away on center street as well, police found an abandoned black toyota camry that struck several parked cars. given the proximity, police believe that camry may also be tied to the deadly hit-and-run and police say the toyota plowed into those cars and didn't attempt to stop. >> looks like it was a fairly high speed accident into the last vehicle in the road there that drove all the cars parked along that side there one into the other. the investigators are trying to locate the owner of the vehicle to determine who was driving it. they are also trying to identify the adult female who

was deceased. once she's identified, we will try to notify next of kin. >> reporter: police stopped short of calling the person a suspect. at the scene you can see police back out here going over the crime scene where the woman died. there doesn't appear to be any type of skidmarks on the pavement here suggesting that the vehicle attempted to stop meaning this vehicle likely struck that woman and just kept going. that's the latest here in herndon. back to you. >> sherri, thank you. also new this morning, detectives are investigating if two robberies at two different 7-eleven stores are related. first one was at 4:00 a.m. at 2000 block of east/west highway in hyattsville then 4:40 then another one. no one was hurt in either

robbery. the robber was armed. checking some of our top stories, starting today, 47 million women nationwide will have new preventative healthcare benefits. under the affordable care act, women will now receive services including breast exams, prenatal care, hpv testing, contraception and domestic violence counseling at no extra cost. these requirements apply to women who have private insurance plans as well as those covered under medicare and medicaid. on capitol hill, last night a bill that would have banned abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy in the district failed. it needed a two-thirds majority to pass. 17 democrats joined 203 republicans voting in favor making the vote 220-154 and not news 4 send it on to the senate. -- and not enough to send it on to the senate. a horrific scene in calvert

county, a murder-suicide. they believe 32-year-old frank hayward killed his wife and 2- year-old daughter and critically injured his 12-year- old son before setting the house on fire then taking his own life. police are investigating a possible motive. hayward did have a history of domestic violence. in frederick, maryland, friend and family of robyn gardner are holding a special event tonight. they are marking the one-year anniversary of the 35-year- old's disappearance in aruba. and they are encouraging anyone with information about that to come forward. gardner's travel companion gaithersburg resident gary giordano reported her missing to aruban authorities on august 2, 2011 saying she didn't return to shore after they went snorkeling. >> he or dan no spent months in an aruban jail but was released because prosecutors didn't have enough evidence to continue holding him. tougher drunk driving laws go into effect today in the district. the new guidelines call for stiffer sentences for people

with especially high blood alcohol levels. there are harsher sentences for drunk driving in a commercial vehicle like a cab, limo or big rig. maximum sentence for first time offenders 180 days in jail. that's double the previous maximum. the minimum sentence will now be 10 days if your blood alcohol level is .20 or higher or if you're a repeat offender and the higher your blood alcohol level the longer you stay in jail. a mass show of support in the form of chicken sandwiches. chik-fil-a appreciation day is the brainchild of talk show host and former presidential candidate mike huckabee. he has thrown his support behind chik-fil-a's ceo, who recently spoke out about his belief in the biblical definition of marriage. meantime, on friday, gay rights activists are planning a kiss- in at chik-fil-a restaurants across the country. and in virginia, governor bob mcdonald is weighing in on new calls to ban chik-fil-a restaurants across the state.

from a huge win from the u.s. women's gymnasticses team. they routed the russian, chinese and romanian teams to take the gold the first time in 16 years. and they won big coming in 5 points ahead of the russians. something very rare in gymnastics. jordan weaver, began did i douglas and maroney set a relentless pace that the russians couldn't match. also another history making record from michael phelps. the baltimore native won his all-time 19th olympic medal yesterday. wisdom marcus has the story. >> reporter: he stands all by himself because he is now the most decorated olympian of all time as the u.s. took gold in the 200-meter freestyle relay yesterday. now, he was the final swimmer on his team and the roars from the crowd got louder with each stroke when phelps touched the wall, he finally had that gold at his final olympics. and a record for all ages.

the presidential election and the race to the white house is close. presumptive republican presidential nominee mitt romney is back home in boston this morning after a week-long trip overseas. romney made campaign stops in britain and israel before concluding his trip in poland. and that's where a heated exchange took place between reporters and a romney campaign aide at a memorial for pope john paul ii. >> show some respect here. >> we haven't had another chance to ask him questions. >> [ bleep ] this is a holy site for the polish people! >> mitt romney had a hard time some say abroad struggling through a series of missteps that drew criticism from british and palestinian officials. in the meantime, president barack obama is expected to make a campaign stop in ohio today. tomorrow, the president will be closer to home addressing a crowd in leesburg virginia. and there's also good news for the president in the form of a new poll out this morning. a survey from quinnipiac university, cbs news and the "new york times" shows president obama leading mitt

romney in three key swing states. the president has a six-point lead in ohio, florida and a 9- point lead in pennsylvania. no one has won the white house since 1960 without winning at least two of those states. the poll also found broad support in those states for president obama's proposal to raise taxes on households making more than $250,000 a year. president obama slaps new sanctions on iran just as congress is set to approve even stricter sanctions later this week. he says, "if the iranian government continues its defiance there should be no doubt that the united states and our partners will continue to impose increasing consequences." the new sanctions are on foreign banks in china and iraq that the u.s. says helped iran evade international penalties. conflict with iran has been a problem for american presidents over the years and what you may not realize is how bitter debates miscalculations and betrayals nearly brought the two nations to the brink of

war. historian and author david crist explores these and other revelations this is new book, "the twilight war," the secret history of america's 30-year conflict with iran. he joins us now to talk about it. thanks for coming in. good to have you here. >> thank you for having me. >> this has been a very complicated relationship. it's hard to remember the fact that at one time, these -- we were friends with iran during the time of the shah as a matter of fact. let me ask your opinion about sanctions like the ones that the president is imposing now. do these sanctions -- are they going to have any impact on iran and its policies and its ambitions? >> the sanctions will be building ever since the bush administration actually. there's a continuity in policy between the democrat and republicans on this. i think as the sanctions increasingly bite on the iranian economy, the oil exports down a third, and the

diplomatics efforts combined with a robust military presence in the gulf, i think the combination of all these have historically offered the best chance at least at getting iran to at least go along with our -- with the international community's desires on this. >> so it's not a foregone conclusion that we are headed towards war with iran? >> no. i think it's always better to talk than to fight. and throughout history, the iranians have shown a remarkable ability to step away from the brink of the cliff just as it appears we're headed to war. so i don't think it's a foregone conclusion. however, even if we resolve the nuclear issue, it doesn't change the ultimate dynamics of the relationship and the antagonism has been there since 1979 and i don't see that changing anytime soon. >> any relief in that coming? >> not so much. i think the -- one of the

fundamental problems we face is the revolution in 1979 the young students who shouted, down with the shah and over through an up popular american- backed dictator. now gray in their beards. but their attitudes haven't changed. so i don't think until this current supreme leader leaves and you have a new generation of leaders in iran, that they are going to -- i think we're going to make the strides that i think we would really like to see as far as rapprochement with iran. >> this book is detail. your research started in 1994 and you conducted 400 interviews. were there any surprises, any thing surprised you that had gone on during this time? >> many things. the insight of the way the u.s. has grappled with the problem. it's been interesting. but sometimes the most amazing stories actually fall into your lap. and i was contacted by a woman

who claimed that her father had been a spy for the u.s. government and had been hanged as a result of it. during the interview a number of stories started fitting together about this guy's life and what he did. he was indeed a spy for the u.s. government. he is an iranian navy captain and turned out to be one of the most important agents we had. he tipped off the u.s. government to a massive iranian attack on saudi arabia that would have led to a war in the middle east. and as a result, he compromised himself and was executed for it. >> hm. all right. the -- i want to talk about where we go from here. you say it's always better to talk and war is not an foregone conclusion. we have an election coming up. we have gone through five presidents in the last 30-odd years with the relationship with iran. do our policies change dramatically from president to president? or are we handing off the same problem and do we approach this

in kind of a unified way from president to president? >> it's a great question. the one interesting thing about the last 30 years in each as you said five administrations is there's a surprising continuity between the presidents. relationship has ping ponged back and forth between peace and war. every president has had to grapple with the prospects of going to war with iran or the potential there might be a diplomatic breakthrough. so i think no matter how it turns out in november, whether it's president romney or president obama, they are largely going to fall back on similar policies. >> very interesting. weigh could talk for an hour about -- we could talk this for an hour about this, mr. crist, thank you for coming in. you're going to be at the international spy museum for a briefing and book signing for today at noon and, of course, the spy museum is in northwest d.c. our holly morris has been there all morning long. so thank you very much for coming in.

serious flooding in arizona forcing highways to shut down. check out that picture. it also knocked out power and trapped cars on the roads. firefighters say they have rescued several people including a toddler from vehicles that got stuck during a storm. luckily none of those people seriously hurt. in this area we have seen our fair share of rain this summer, as well. >> all of that water is one of the reasons you may be seeing a lot of dragonflies buzzing around. earlier this morning during ask the weather guys, we learned that dragonflies won't breed in water that's poor quality. that means more dragonflies indicates good water quality in d.c. and the surrounding areas. you're also seeing more dragonflies and insects in general because of the warm weather. i'll explain that in a moment. now, if you see a dragonfly, these pictures look -- they look funny up close. scary looking. if you see a dragonfly no need to be afraid. they are not dangerous. they don't sting or bite
