77 in baltimore and at the naval air station and 73 out at dulles. temperatures yesterday in the low 90s, today add a couple of degrees to that mid-90s. more details on the forecast. we'll look at the weekend in a couple of minutes. back to you. this morning a disaster narrowly averted at reagan national airport. three commuters jets came within seconds of colliding in midair. our fox 5's sherri ly has the latest on this live outside the airport. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this was a near disaster that was averted. at the time there apparently was some miscommunication with the control tower that put these three planes on a collision course.

>> reporter: the information coming from the "washington post" the near miss involved three u.s. airways commuter jets around 2:00 tuesday afternoon. at the time the air traffic control center in warrenton had switched the landing approach to the airport because of a change in the winds. in the meantime a plane was cleared to land from the wrong direction putting it in the path of two outbound flights coming within 12 seconds of a midair collision. the air traffic controller realized the mistake, ordered the plane to turn and break off the approach. an aviation expert told "fox 5 morning news" at 7:00 there is hardly any room for mistakes. >> precious little room to err. that's why the pilots again are the top of their game when they fly in there. and i think that that may ultimately have been one of the reasons that we avoided a midair collision of disastrous proportions over d.c. >> reporter: planes today are equipped with collision

avoidance system that go off if these planes get too close. it's unclear if those alarms sounded in this case. u.s. airways says "we are currently investigating and working with the faa to determine what occurred. the safety of our customers and employees is always our top priority." a federal official told the "post" that "this was a pretty big screw-up for a major airport." the faa is investigating and says it will, quote, take appropriate action to address the miscommunication. that's the latest here at reagan national. back to you. >> thank you, sherri. checking our other top stories, a suspicious death investigation is under way in fort washington, maryland. this after a body was found in a creek behind some homes on braemer circle. skyfox was over the scene this morning. prince george's county police say someone called 911 after finding the body in the creek.

an autopsy is set for today. a new twist in the investigation into an apparent hit-and-run. a woman was found dead along center street in herndon early yesterday. police said they were looking for her husband, fitsum, call him a person of interest. officials say he is the owner of the car involved in the hit- and-run but they can't say for sure if he used the door kill his wife. while combing the scene yesterday evening, officers discovered the body of a man in a nearby creek. that body bears a close resemblance to the husband. police can't confirm the identity until an autopsy is done. in maryland this morning officials are calling for stronger laws so that telephone threats aren't treated lightly in the future. this after news that a man accused of threatening to go on a shooting rampage at his former workplace in largo will only be charged with a misdemeanor. police seized about two dozen weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition from neil edwin

prescott's apartment. officers have talked him into voluntarily going to seek treatment at a mental hospital. an update on the movie massacre. the "denver post" reports that the psychiatrist treating suspect james holmes was so alarmed by his behavior that she notified the threat assessment team at the university of colorado. now that happened in june. but no further action was taken because he left shortly after that. the university says it can't confirm nor deny the report for privacy reasons. the assessment team is a group of employees trained in assessing potential threats on campus. it is a somber day for one maryland family. today is the one-year anniversary of the disappearance of robyn gardner. lauren dimarco is back with details on what family and friends are doing to cope during this hard time. >> reporter: tony and allison, even though it's been a year since robyn gardner went

missing her family is hopeful they will find her. yesterday robyn's mother, brother, sister and friends gathered to remember her but they made it very clear it was not just the memorial service. they want to keep the story alive and encourage anyone with any information to come forward. the 35-year-old from frederick, maryland was last seen vacationing with gary giordano in aruba last summer. he reported gardner missing a year ago today saying she disappeared while they were snorkeling. he spent months in jail but was released for lack of evidence. gardner's friends and family hope to bring renewed attention to the case and they are praying that they will find out what happened to the woman that they love. >> it's about what we're doing now and it's coming together for love and comfort right now. >> we have hope in the aruban authorities and everyone involved in the investigation. and also we have complete 100% faith in god that something good will come out of this.

>> you may remember giordano took an accidental -- took out an accidental death policy on gardner and himself an insurance policy before the trip. after she went missing, he filed a $3.5 million lawsuit against the insurance company for failing to pay that death benefit. again, robyn's family hopes something good will come from the devastating situation. they have earmarked donations that come in for a frederick- based domestic violence nonprofit called hartley house. go to myfoxdc.com. hopefully the family will find some closure. >> that would be the hope, lauren, thanks so much. gee to the campaign trail now where president obama will once again campaign in the battleground state of virginia. tonight the president holds an event at loudoun county high school in leesburg. some roads will be closed starting at 2:30 this afternoon so be prepared. other roads will close about 6:30 including lee avenue between dominion academy and dry mill road.

for a full list of closures and information on the presidential event, head to myfoxdc.com and click on web links. presumptive republican presidential nominee mitt romney will be campaigning in colorado today. romney just returned from a trip overseas where met with political power players in great britain, israel and poland. today he will hold a roundtable in aspen with three high- profile governors, chris christie, bobby jindal and scott walker. talk is still swirling about who romney will pick for his running mate. his campaign says the announcement will be made first on an app called mitt's vp. a group of baptist ministers wants d.c. mayor vincent gray to apologize for a tweet sent last week. the mayor tweeted that he did not support chik-fil-a's position on gay marriage. then ended the message with hashtag hate chicken. the conference takes issue with that message. they say those who oppose same- sex marriage based on religious beliefs should not be labeled

as hateful. no comment from the mayor. nearly 5.2 million americans are living with alzheimer's disease. some of them have a form of the disease called early onset alzheimer's. this condition can be diagnosed in people in their 30s, 40s, 50s. prince george's county executive baker has gone public with the revelation that his wife has this form of alzheimer's. early onset alzheimer's. krista beverly baker is 52. she is a civil rights lawyer. she is also the mother 6 three living with this illness for two years. in a letter to fox 5, rushern baker says he is sharing the news in hopes that other families in prince george's county and the d.c. metro area can learn what we have learned. mental health disease is not the end nor do you need to be embarrassed or ashamed." we spoke today with a neurologist about early onset

exciting news for washington nationals fans despite a loss with the phillies. the team is gearing up for the post-season. it announced that 2013 full season packages are now available and fans who place a deposit on them will receive 2012 post-season ticket priority. yeah. ♪ [ music ] >> these a good deal. a good way to get folks in there. we are just one week away now from the redskins' first preseason game. >> that's incredible to believe. players head back to the field today for day 7 of training camp and, of course, dave ross is live in ashburn, virginia with a look ahead. you're talking to a little guy, dave? >> reporter: well, little in some circles. to me he is a big guy, my height. but yeah, tony, it is bizarre to think about that in 7 days they will play a -- it actually is a meaningful game.

the win and loss doesn't mean anything in the preseason but we should get our first look at robert griffin iii next thursday in buffalo. if buffalo plays their starters, they got a guy mario williams in the outside he is pretty darn good at rushing the passer so keep your eye on that. but we are going to talk about the other rg iii first. rex grossman iii. i know a lot of people in town, rex grossman -- guess what the players love this guy. the locker room, they love this guy. last year he got the redskins off to a three in one start. he ended up starting 13 of the 16 games, finishing with 16 touchdowns and 20 picks. the 20 picks is why fans go ah! his rating 72-point 4. he led the skins to two big wins over the event super bowl champion giants. but in this scenario with the addition of rgiii, that means r g-3 rex grossman iii is a backup once again like he was to mcnabb two years ago so now his new role is a mentor to robert griffin iii. >> everything is going good. he has a lot on his plate but

is doing well with it. he is picking it up good. all the stuff we have added for him, everybody else is coming along with it well and, you know, he is playing pretty good. >> anytime you're around somebody who is a fun person to be around, we have good working relationship. >> rex has always been a very unselfish guy and he's going it to tutor people and he just knows how to dole with people. he is just kind of a -- he just knows how to deal with people. he is just kind of a guy's guy. he will say the right thing at the right time, and that's were the players respect him so so much. >> reporter: that's true. the definition of a backup quarter, do you mind putting him in for four or five games? i don't think so. in a short stint rex grossman can be serviceable and cape an as a backup quarterback. the one guy out here that's been turning heads this preseason is the smallest guy

of all. not me. brandon bank 5'7" tall. 153 pounds. but guess what! if he makes this team, it's not going to be just as a special teams player. it's going to be as a wide receiver. and so far, he has been catching everything thrown to him. last year you may recall he was not healthy during training camp. this year he is and it's making a big difference. >> had a good off season, did a lot of rehabbing and strengthening of my legs concerning my knee problems and conditioning with my chest and everything with my lungs, so i think i took care of my body real well. >> didn't know how to do the little things the right way and he matured and he understands that if he is going to play in the national football league he has to be at the top of his game. he has an excellent off season program by getting in top shape and doing the things he has to do. >> reporter: the one thing when you watch that clip of him running back a kickoff, he is

the most exciting guy i think arguably in the nfl and yes, he has to improve on his wide receiver skills which he is doing now. it's going tough for him to make the team when you have all the other players, it's going to be a tough task but he is doing everything he to put the best foot forward. day 7 already out at training camp. tony and allison, i know you can't wait for football. i can't wait for football. >> dave, can i ask a quick question? if they left him as a specialist a kick returner would that improve his chance of making the team? >> reporter: absolutely. he would still do those duties as well as being a weighed receiver but what they are saying -- wide receiver, but whatter in saying is they can spend one of those 53-man spots on just a kickoff or punt returner. he has to be able to do double duty and play wide receiver as well. >> i think he brings so much to the team. thank you. coming up in just a little bit a new service for travelers through wbi marshall. >> plus another auto recall to

last saturday at their home in glen ellen virginia north of richmond and 56 she got him out she started cpr. lauren kornacki joins us via skype this morning. thanks for talking with us. you know, i'm sure such a brave woman and i'm sure you're thinking, i can't believe i was able to do that. walk us through what happened that day. >> i will in a second but if i could first just say, if anyone is touched by this story, you should go out and get cpr, get certified with the red cross because, you know, obviously, i -- that's where i got it and it saves people's lives. so thank you and you know, first thing that happened was my dad was outside fixing his -- my little sister's car. and he was under there by himself and we were all inside and i was getting ready to leave to go pick up one might have good friends and we were going to go get her car and i

came outside and found him pinned underneath the car. >> so after -- your instincts just kicked in? you immediately lifted up the car? what did it feel like to do that? >> well, i mean, the first thing they teach new cpr is you need to get someone out of immediate danger and obviously, a car on top of someone is immediate danger. and now, i kind of -- it was kind of a last-ditch effort and i kind of was just throwing myself at the car and it's kind of like since the wheel was off it was like a table with a short leg so, you know, me being on that side and stay with us kind of lifting it up kind of balance it out a little bit and then me pushing to throw my body at it must have shifted it enough just to get my dad loose and get me enough space to be able to pull out my dad. >> we saw a picture of you with your dad. he is expected to be okay.

he has fractured ribs, sternum and vertebrae. what's it been like talking with him since this occurred? what has he had to say to you about this? >> you know, we are the same kind of person. and to be honest pretty much we really don't have to say much to each other. we kind of understand each other. but every time that i have been to the hospital and seen him, if i leave the room at all for any reason, you know, he will just saw i love you, thank you for saving my life. and, you know, that, uhm, in itself, that just says everything. you don't have to say anything else. i have been trying to tell him not to say that anymore because it's hard for me to take that and -- >> right. >> -- realize what happened. >> reporter: lauren, real quickly i have always wanted to ask somebody this when they do something like lifting a heavy piece of equipment off someone. you know, when the adrenaline is pumping, did you feel anything after that? does your body feel the impact of it from like the next day like as if you had done a hard workout or anything?

>> oh, yeah. my back was in knots. i still have some numbness in some of my fingers. i don't know why. some cuts and bruises. but, you know, really not anything compared to my dad. >> absolutely. i'm sure. you'll take a sore back any day over what your dad had to go through. lauren kornacki, thanks so much for talking with us and the best to you and your dad and you're a very brave young woman. i'm sure you probably have heard that but you definitely are. and acted quickfully that moment. thanks so much. >> thank you. >> isn't it amazing? >> what a story. >> i know. >> and kudos to her for what she said about cpr. she knew it and we all should know t i have to admit i got training many years ago and i have let that lapse. >> when your son was born? >> yes. >> that's the last time i did. >> she is right. we really should know how. in that circumstance, you know, it's a good thing she knew. she is a pool manager apparently. she was an athlete in school too so i'm sure being a pool manager she has to know how to

do cpr so it's good. >> how do you learn how to pull a car off somebody? >> exactly. >> like we said, it's adrenaline. we always say,you said we always say oh, i could never do that. you don't know what you're capable of unless you have a loved one, a child, a father who is in danger. you don't know. you don't know. >> let's go out in the parking lot right now and try? i'm sure none of us could do it. >> i'm sure we couldn't. >> and we probably shouldn't try. >> no. >> wonderful story. >> thank you. all right. always great when you have a good news story. makes you feel good. her message is great and the love between her and her dad were great. >> we were in the weather center one day and a chair fell on him and i pushed it off him. >> it took him a long period of time to get it off. >> we both survived. it's going to be hot. 79 in manassas. pleasant temperatures north and westerly. satellite and radar are quiet. cold front overnight trying to come through, e h, it fell apart. so we are looking at just sunshine today. enough of a cap on the atmosphere that we won't see showers and thunderstorms today. we'll be dry today and tomorrow. as we watch once again this big dome of high pressure hot and humid air to the west, lift back national mid-atlantic for a couple of days. so after enjoying a couple of days in the upper 80s and low 90s, our forecast highs later today right back in the middle 90s with plenty of humidity building in particularly tonight and during the day tomorrow. so next couple of days on the hot side and then we'll cool down a little bit for the weekend with a few scattered thunderstorms around by saturday afternoon. sunshine, hot afternoon, 94 your daytime high. south winds at 5 to 10. calm conditions tonight. clear skies, very warm overnight 72 the overnight low. here is your five-day forecast. want to mention another hot one

tomorrow with temperatures getting very close to that advisory criteria mid-90s with plenty of heat. could be a scattered storm saturday and sunday. most of your weekend dry with temperatures about 90 or so. best chance of rain on the five- day forecast monday with a cold front. the american association of university women issued a report on sexual harassment in schools and found that nearly half the students surveyed said that they had been sexually harassed so they were concerned when new federal data was released on school bullying and some schools had no reports. joining us is lisa matz the director of public policy with aauw or american association of university women. thanks for being with us. >> good morning. >> can you tell us about what you sent out to analyze these findings ? tell us what's the

issue here? >> you know, finally the department of education and their office of civil rights was collecting a civil rights data set. and for the first time this year, they started to collect sexual harassment statistics which of course at our organization we were interested in it. when we looked at the top 20 school districts in the country 14 of them had absolutely no incidents of bullying and harassment which seemed implausible especially given our own research so we decided to send these schools a letter and say it's important, you need to look at how you're reporting things because the only way to address this critical issue is if we're honest with ourselves about how much it happens. >> what is the issue? is it not wanting to put themselves in a bad light, missing the point? what is the issue? >> i think part of it is not wanting to put themselves in a bad light. i think also we need to give them a break in that this is the first year they had to collect it and that's part of

why we did this. we knew this was the first time. if you have questions now is the time to answer them. but zero isn't going to stand up. you need to be proactively address this situation because we know that most kids aren't going to tell you which means if you're not pay attention this is under the radar and that's when disaster strikes. >> in our county, prince george's county and other counties are reviewing it. >> one of the things that's important is they have been in contact with the department of education because there are some concerns about how they are supposed to report and what kind of technical assistance they need. there is a state law in virginia. so fairfax county schools in that sense really needs to be looking at what did they report on the state level and what are think going to be doing at the federal level, as well. >> what are you hearing from students? >> you know, students say that

they are sexually harassed at school, that they are bullied at school. any parent and student can tell you this. more than half of them. now, we know it affects girls more but it affects boys too. and that's the thing about title ix. this is the 40th anniversary of title ix. it helps both boys and girls but only if we're paying attention. >> let's talk about bullying versus sexual harassment. we have heard a lot about bullying lately. does one fall under the other? does sexual harassment fall under that bullying umbrella? and could that become sort of confusing too like the definition perhaps of either sexual harassment or bullying? where does it apply? >> i that's a great point. one of the things that the department of education needs to do is to be sure they are clear about those definitions. obviously, sexual harassment is something that is covered under title ix. and that's parent of where the data collection was coming from but the department of education has also recently said that when you're talking about same-

sex sexual harassment because of gender stereotypes, teasing kids, that's sexual harassment, as well. so the reality is, is that a lot of people think of traditional bullying falls under sexual harassment and it's something that we night to pay attention to. >> let's switch gears in the 30- second that we have to talk about what message can parents hear out there and also students if this is happening to them. what's the message. we got to be pro-active and parents need to work with schools to make sure that title ix coordinators know what they are supposed to do. every school is supposed to have one and the parents should know who they are. they need to ask their kids these questions because reality is that most kids are harrassed but most don't tell. so only by asking can we find out and oh, by the way paying very close attention, watching makes a big difference. >> any changes in their mood and they are different. thank you, lisa. >> thank you.

and the tore cuba gooding, junior will not face criminal charges after a bartender says the actor shoved her. the woman works at a restaurant in new orleans. police issued an arrest warrant yesterday for the actor on a misdemeanor charge of what's called municipal battery. the bartender said that gooding was upset because patrons asked for photos and then when she asked him to calm down, he pushed her. he left before police arrived. also august is almost infamous for the kids going back to school or what have you, we are just, you know, saying good- bye to summer. >> we'll show the viewers something they can do to make their own olive oil but first and foremost, these ice cube trays are really neat. and they are, you know, kind of squishy and what i wanted to show the viewers because one of the great things that you can do with mint -- and mint this time of the year is just extra super abundant in the garden and you're wondering what to do with it, and you want to have those fresh beverages what you can do is fill that up like that and here we have some that are already made. >> look at that. >> so what do you is that's going to be a great, great way to get mint ice cubes. and we're going to reference that later on in the segment, tony, don't worry about that one. >> i won't use that one. >> then we are going to

reference that later on in the segment. >> love it. >> that's great because if you want to, and you want to make like a spritzer with lemonade or whatever, you have already got the ice cubes pre-done. kind of saves you some of the work when you're getting your garden party together. >> great idea. >> another thing that's happening now and you can get these containers, you can reuse -- this is like a pepper vessel. you can reuse the peppercorn vessel, whatever container you want to use, start out with some extra virgin olive oil. i like to do -- and this is, you know, a must if it's going to be italian cooking -- i like to do a couple of bay leaves just the whole bay leaf, make sure it's completely covered. you want to use a little bit of thyme. this is thyme from the garden and once again, this time of year, the thyme is giving you an abundance. now, this is going to be -- this is not for the timid. this is going to be a really pungent wonderful sauce for

cooking. chop up a little bit of basil. that's some basil. and then put your lid back on. give it a twist. and you want that to sit for -- the other thing the one other thing that i love to do, you can do fresh or you can do dried. i was able to get some dried garlic. >> that was the first thing i smelled when i came out here. >> right. you can do the fresh garlic. if you use it, soak it in a little bit of salt to get some of that water bound up so that it doesn't spoil. let that sit for about a week. and you're ready for a great, great homemade sauce. >> love it. looks good, too. >> and you're going to be able to use that with your cooking, with meats, fish, whatever. it's going to be great. or with your itasausage. >> we have a minute left. >> the teas. we are going to start with our ice cubes. what we have here is we have got a sorrel and -- >> i don't know what sorrel is. >> it's a wonderful, wonderful herb that is used a lot in the
