get in here, detroit 69. 70 columbus. never going to quite make it. our frontal system from yesterday still hanging up across the area. here's your forecast. i'll have more details on what we can expect coming up in a few minutes. but 91 in washington later this afternoon. partial sunshine could be a stray storm again i think most of the area should be dry with the exception of southern maryland lower eastern shore south-central virginia later today. all right. allison, more weather in a minute. back to you upstairs. new this morning, the search for a missing prince george's county girl. police say 12-year-old maurisha davis disappeared august 5 along the 4900 block of mckinley street in temple hills. davis was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and bluejean shorts. she also goes by the name kisha. if you have seen her or know where she is, please call police. meantime, police are investigating an accident involving a pedestrian that shut down part of i-66 during the morning rush. this happened around 7:00 this

morning just east of route 28 in fairfax county. virginia state police say a person on the right shoulder was hit and a total of three people were taken to the hospital. turning now to the shooting at a religious temple in wisconsin, there is new information on the identity of the shooter. he was reportedly a neo-nazi white supremacist. and we're also learning he was discharged from the army. let's get the latest from fox 5's lauren demarco live in the newsroom with more about the shooter's back ground. lauren. >> reporter: tony, this morning detectives won't speculate on a motive behind the shooting and they say they may never have one for sure. but a picture is beginning to develop about the gunman. police say 40-year-old army veteran wade michael page opened fire in a weekend sikh tell on sunday morning his murder weapon a 9-millimeter handgun purchased legally. page trained in psychological warfare during his time in the

military from 1992 to 1998. pentagon sources say he was demoted for getting drunk on duty and going awol. he was later discharged. we are being told that page played in the bands definite hate and end apathy. and a civil rights group and a firm that searches the internet for terrorist activity both say page frequently posted items with extremist views or references to white supremacist mantra. while the shooter's background is coming to light, we're learning more about the attacks had claimed the lives of six victims and left three others wounded. 32-year-old police officer sam lenda took down the gunman. police lieutenant brian murphy, who is in critical condition, was shot nine times. he reportedly tried to wave off his colleagues' aids insisting that others needed their help more. and this is last moments the temple's president went head to head with the gunman. >> he ran up and tried to struggle with that man and stabbed him with a butter knife. >> he did everything he could

[ crying ] >> to the very end. >> protests of the shooting have been held around the world including this one in india. meanwhile survives of the mass shooting at the aurora theater in colorado are reaching out to help those who made it out of the wisconsin sikh temple alive. on their facebook page they are asking for resources for the sikhs, the same kind of love and support that was shown for them. meanwhile, wade page's band, end apathy, a reporting contract with label 56 out of linthicum heights, maryland, and they have removed all images and products from end apathy from their website. they add they don't think what page did was honorable or respectable. back to you. meanwhile, the sikh community here in the washington region came together for prayers last night.

the special prayer service was to remember the victims and pray for the families. they will have prayer sessions every night this week. the man accused of shooting congresswoman gabrielle giffords appears in court today and will enter a plea. sarah simmons has a look at what's happening in court. >> reporter: several high- profile court cases are back in the news today. remember jared lee loughner suspect charged with shooting gabrielle giffords? he is expected to plead guilty if found mentally competent. the change in plea would result in a life sentence but he would avoid the death penalty with this change. loughner spent more than a year in a federal medical facility being treated for mental illness. he is accused of killing 6 people and hurting 13 others during last year's shooting in tucson. the ohio man accused of killing his wife in her hospital bed is scheduled to appear in court today.

police are still waiting for the autopsy results. it could impact the attempted murder charges that are pending against her husband of 45 years. police say john weiss shot and killed his wife in the icu saturday. investigators believe it may have been a mercy killing. still unclear why she was in the hospital. now to prince george's county, where university of maryland student who threatened to go on a killing spree is expected to plead guilty. prosecutors say alexander song is scheduled to appear in court today. he was arrested last march after he posted threats online to kill enough people apparently to make national news. song was also an honor student. back to you. >> thank you. some of the other stories making headlines this morning, police identify a body found in a did you feel back in fort washington, maryland. 22-year-old shavon phillips. the missing mother from southeast d.c. was last seen july 30 leaving her child's

daycare center in northeast. her remains were found on august 1 in a creek on braemer circle. police are trying to determine how she died. if you have any information about this case, please call prince george's county police. eight men convicted of kill catherine fuller in 1984 will not have their convictions overturned ruled by a judge monday. the lawyers said their clients were not guilty but the judge disagreed. one of the defense attorneys says evidence shows fuller was murdered by one or two people and not a group. but prosecutors say they stand by the verdict. defense attorneys say they will appeal. three parking lot attendants at the smithsonian are accused of stealing at least $400,000. they were arrested on saturday. court documents say the scheme started in 2009. they allegedly unplugged vehicle counters so the money

wouldn't be missed. the museum is a big draw for visitors featuring attractions including the shuttle discovery. it cost $15 to park there. d.c. mayor vince gray has been embroiled in scandal and now his staff reached out for help. judy smith is well known for handling political scandals, including monica lewinsky. gray's spokesman confirms that smith has met with staffers but won't say whether she met with the mayor himself. gray is under investigation for his 2010 mayoral campaign. in the race for the white house now, mitt romney trounces the president in fundraising last month. the campaign and republican national committee announced last night that they have raised more than $100,000 last month. >> and right after, president obama sent an email to

supporters say, quote, if we don't step it up we're in trouble. wisdom martin is back with more. >> reporter: we are talking about today and a few states the polls are opening kansas, michigan, missouri and washington state for the republican primaries. now, as far as the candidates today, the president is holding a couple of fundraisers tonight at the hotel w in the district and mitt romney is huddling with advisors in new hampshire one a person in charge of finding a running mate. he may announce his pick sometime next week for the vice president. this weekend he launches a bus tour in virginia with governor bob mcdonnell. he then has a stop in north carolina. then monday in florida senator marco rubio will be on the bus. when he goesohio on tuesday, senator robb portman will be with him.

finally, his thank you. tonight you may see an unusually large amount of law enforcement officers in your neighborhood because it's the 29th annual "national night out." from 6 to 10:00 p.m. residents are urged to spend time outside with neighbors and officers. the event is meant to encourage partnerships between the police and community they serve. in our area there will be law enforcement visiting areas in fairfax county, gaithersburg and the district and other areas. in northern virginia 95 had get a makeover. governor mcdonnell will kick off the new express lanes with a groundbreaking ceremony. the new project will add 29 miles of express lanes from stafford county to fairfax. it will also connect the new lanes on i-95 to those under construction on 495. today pepco customers will have their chance to share

complaints or compliments about the way pepco responded to the june 29th derecho. the maryland public service commission is holding a public hearing in rockville tonight. it's at 7:00 p.m. at the montgomery council office building on maryland avenue. the psc will hold hearings focusing on the response by bge next week. nasa has released some of the first video sent back by the mars rover curiosity. this low resolution clip shows the final few moments of curiosity's descent to the red planet. it captured the protective heat shield falling away as the rover traveled through mars' atmosphere early yesterday morning. coming up next on "fox 5 morning news," when was the last time you aced anything? for a local student was a few months ago when he got a perfect score on his a.c.t. >> just one more accomplishment for taariq mohammed to add to his resume' as he looks to head off to college, not too long from now.

we are back with a teenager who is adding a perfect score to his accomplishments. taariq mohammed a rising senior at howard county's river hill high school aced his a.c.t. test. so what's next? taariq joins me live in studio now to tell us all about it. good morning, congratulations. >> thank you. >> the picture we're showing in addition to doing so wonderfully on this test you are a medal winning wrestler, correct? >> yes. this year i was a varsity team captain for the river hill wrestling team and we won our first tournament title, state title.

individually i placed 6th. >> this has been a great year for you. let's talk about the a.c.t. congratulations. perfect score is 36. >> mm-hm. >> so here's my question. when you finished taking the test, you put the pencil down, you finished, did you feel like i did pretty well on this? >> i was -- lot of practice tests and on the practice tests you can score yourself. and so i was doing pretty well. and i was hoping would do well, hoping for a perfect score but i had no idea that i could. jude no idea. so when you found out, they notified you by letter? >> actually i checked on the website from my phone. >> when you saw that it was a perfect score, what did you do? >> well, first thing i did is i took a picture on my phone and sent it to my parents and my brothers. they helped me a lot. >> that's great. your family, i should say it's not just you but you have two brothers, right? >> mm-hm. >> both of them also doing very well academically. >> yes. >> one has graduated from johns hopkins with a degree in what?

>> biomolecular engineering. >> holy moly. and you have another one who something going into his senior year? >> he is a biomedical engineer. >> what do you want to do? >> engineering seems like a good idea for now. [ laughter ] >> and then after that, hopefully i can go to medical school and be a doctor, which is ultimately what i want to do. >> so tell me, you said you took a lot of practice tests. have you done well academically throughout your career? >> yes. >> school career? >> yes. in high school i have a 4.0 gpa and i took -- i have eight ap tests i took and got five on all of them so i have been doing pretty well just because now taking practice tests is what i do to prepare and helps me prepare for tests because i know what to expect on test day. >> would that be you know -- for other people watching this, either kids who think, man, i want to do that well, or parents who are thinking, well, how do i get my kids to do that well, it's all about -- i mean,

seems relatively easy to say, it's all about the studying and you say practice, practice, practice. >> well, i have to say that's the one thing i did. but for my family i had, you know, two brothers who knew what i needed to do. and they told me, you know, start practicing early. they gave me the practice tests because they had their old ones and also, it just other things i had to my advantage, parents that had me start reading a a young age and having a religion that keeps me on the right track. >> so you have the family support. what do you do for fun? >> for fun? well, i do enjoy reading, which is -- >> i said for fun. [ laughter ] >> no, kidding. reading wonderful, obviously. do you read fiction or nonfiction? >> for funny read fun, i read fiction. >> you do wrestling. is it a state championship? >> yes, it's a team state championship and individually i

placed sixth. >> i also understand that you recently or sometime in the recent past helped organize some type of fundraiser? >> i am the vice president of the key club at river hill which was the new club that -- a new club started this year and also, i am part of the national organization society and the human rights organization at my school. we do a lot of community service. one thing we were talking about, we did organize like a dance marathon somewhat to raise money for cancer at mount sinai hospital. >> very good. that's great. do you play videogames? >> yeah. i like my videogames. >> do your parents limit the amount of time you can play videogames? >> not really. as long as i keep getting good grades, i do well in wrestling and everything that i do, they're okay with me spending my free time how i like. >> good for you. congratulations. >> thank you. >> you're doing all the right things. we like to hear this. this is one of these mornings where we have had a lot of bad news. so it have someone like you come in here and talk about what's going on with you and maybe inspire some others is a good thing.

team beat argentina 126-97 and advanced. the u.s.-led by only one point at halftime. kevin durant scored 28 points. the u.s. next plays australia tomorrow in the quarterfinals. bethesda's olympic princess is back from london already. >> gold medalist katie ledecky got a superstar welcome when she arrived at dulles yesterday. [ chanting ] >> stone ridge they were spelling. stone ridge! the crowd cheered stone ridge where katie ledecky is a sophomore. she is the youngest member of the olympic team at 15. she broke a record to get the gold. at the games she beat janet evans' u.s. record set 23 years ago. >> it was really neat. i was aware of her great

problems so southern maryland with heavy rain. there is a picture just got it 15 minutes ago. >> thank you. showers and thunderstorms, there you go. you can see it's very localized. la plata, earlier we had a good storm in southern calvert county, st. mary's county towards leonardtown a little further north and this is all that's left over. so it's not going to rain all day but these thunderstorms as they have developed are slow movers. this one is pushing ever so slowly to the east drifting here. and this is the warm and humid air that we still have in place from yesterday. parts of the area -- let's move to our next map. parts of the area here have started to get in on the drier air. this is our cold front from yesterday. parts of the area getting in on the drier air and more sunshine off to the north and west, and the rest of us, washington and points south and east a lot of humidity and heat. that will be the case later this afternoon. we'll see a few more showers and thunderstorms pop up today

they will have tomorrow off. now, yesterday was robert griffin iii's third press conference. he spoke to us for the third time. says he is much more comfortable than 11 days ago when training camp began and he said he is very eager for thursday night's start. didn't say he's nervous but rather that he is anxious, can't wait to do it. says his decision-making is getting better as to whether to run or pass when he is on the rollout. he knows an early touchdown maybe on that first drive, they say he is going to play 12 to 20 plays thursday night, would ease the minds of the fans and, of course, us, the media. >> you guys are putting more pressure on the game than i am. but, you know, it's just going to be fun. first pre-game even if it is a preseason game the first pre- game, first travel with the team, so it will be a -- an eye- opening experience. i look forward to it. we didn't have fans at practice every day. but, you know, it's great. you know, it's baylor times a

trillion as far as the fans go. baylor was great, and there's the same kind of excitement but it's a bigger city. d.c., all the fans here, the redskins are really motivated. >> it will be fun to see him thursday night 7:00 in buffalo. lindsay murphy will make the road trip. one other thing to keep an eye on the tight end position. chris cooley will play fullback in the game. niles paul has been coming very fast at that tight end position and what about fred davis? he had some issues off of the field last year that kept him out of the final four games. something we addressed yesterday after practice. >> here with fifth year tight end fred davis. can you believe four years have already come and gone in your pro career? >> no, i cannot. but it goes by fast. i heard once you come in you're on the way out. >> fred, let's address the elephant in the room. obviously, last year you and the trent williams were suspended the last four games

for violating the substance abuse policy. fans say they want to make sure fred is okay that it won't happen again. how do you reassure fans that that's behind you? >> by doing what i'm doing now. just focusing on what's at hand here, making sure i'm here for every game, making sure i'm not suspended doing what we have to dove the field all the things that you have to do for the nfl off the field. over time there won't be issues. >> so for you the issue is already beside. >> yes. everybody else you have to -- something that's an issue from last year. so until the year is over with it will still be an issue. >> we're hoping that those issues are behind fred davis because up until that point, tony and allison, he was having a monster breakout year through the first 12 games. let's hope he can play all 16 and maybe he will have a pro bowl type season. once again practice is closed today to the public so don't come out here and again, they have an off day tomorrow before they shuffle off to buffalo and we get our first look at the

♪[ music ] you hear the music there. you see the picture. we're getting word this morning that one of hollywood's best known as most successful composers has died. marvin hamlisch has died at the age of 68 in los angeles after a brief illness. you're hearing music from the sting. one of dozens and dozens of film scores that he composed. he also composed music for broadway. he won awards. he was an academy award winner, emmy and tony and golden globe winner, composed music for movies like the sting on broadway for a chorus line, the movie sophie's choice of. he won a pulitzer for a chorus line. >> he is one of only 12 people

to have been award the ammy, grammy, oscar, tony and one of only two to win all of those plus the pulitzer. >> wow. >> so quite an accomplishment. >> he was a fixture with the success of the sting, he became a fixture on talk shows and variety shows in the 1970s. breaking news. metro sources tell us five people have been hurt after an escalator accident at the la font plaza station. officials say the escalator stopped or slowed suddenly probably because of a passenger's bag or clothing caught in the side. three people were transported to local hospitals. we're told with cuts and scrapes. we have a crew on the way to the scene. we'll bring you more details as we get them. also, just a few moments ago when we were talk about the death of marvin hamlisch i believe i said that the music we were hearing from the sting was composed by him.

it was not, scott composed by scott joplin but it was the theme to the sting which marvin hamlisch was performing. so there you go. want to clear that up. this morning, holly is getting a behind-the-scenes look at one of the latest productions to hit the stage in our area. >> it is a romance, a comedy, and more. it's "little shop of horrors." holly joins us live from the olney theater with details. hey, holly. >> reporter: right now, i'm learning how to be one of the urchins. there's only supposed to be three of them and i'm number four and i'm in distress. where do we go from here? >> five, six, seven, eight. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: this is where they schoo me off the stage. they are going off. mark, where is your saunter on? they left with such flash. >> i can't compete with that. [ laughter ] >> reporter: what he does is direct the whole thing.

this is mark waltrip the director of "little shop of horrors." good morning to you. >> good morning. >> reporter: and so i was reading about you and you said the first time you saw "little shop of horrors," that that was a moment for you. >> oh, i'll never forget it. i left that theater walking on air because i had never seen anything like that before. and i feel that over the years, you know, i saw it originally off broadway and then since then -- >> reporter: like 30 years ago. >> yeah. and it ran a really long time off broadway but since then the movie was made and it was revived on broadway and it sort of got blown up, what to me felt like out of proportion from the experience i had had. and it's been done everywhere, you know, in schools and community theaters, everybody has done "little shop of horrors." but my feeling is that it's gotten away from the experience i originally had. >> so you're bringing it back? >> i'm trying to really honor

that experience because it's easy to let it slide into a cartoon. what's fantastic and unique about it, to me, is how it combines comedy and horror and heart and emotion. you know? i think for this show to succeed, you should have some goosebumps, you should laugh a lot and maybe cry a couple of times. >> reporter: interesting. you feel like the audiences are getting that here? >> i do. and it's really gratifying to me. >> reporter: how much of it is the cast and the venue that allow that, and then your vision. i think it's all of them working together. i think only the perfect theater for this show because it is so intimate, the olney theater, i think, yes, they have allowed me to bring my vision to the show. the cast, though, i have to say, i have been so fortunate, especially james gardner who plays seymour and carolyn who plays audrey, i couldn't ask for two better actors because

they play the comedy, they get the comedy, they're hilarious. but they bring so much heart to it. and that's what i really wanted to bring. >> reporter: what are the chances of there being a fourth your chin? >> after this morning? i'm talking to them about it. [ laughter ] >> reporter: i'll have my people talk to your people and we'll see if we can negotiate. >> excellent. >> reporter: i have to in this moment as we have just received the news that the legendary marvin hamlisch has died as someone obviously who is themselves spending a lot of their life in the theater is. >> yeah. >> reporter: what does that news mean to you? >> it's like a giant going away. i mean, i -- i moved to new york right when a chorus line was the biggest thing that happened in the theater, you know, in 50 years. it was just monumental. it's a huge loss. very sad. i'm very surprised. >> reporter: one singular sensation gone from our lives. thank you forgiving us a

with us now. so what brings you back to the area? >> well, i have -- i'm doing a pbs special. my first pbs special comes out in a few days so i'm going to weta, a little a bitter on this afternoon, doing a little bit of recording and my new album is coming out. i'm doing a lot of different things. thanks for having me on to promote the album. >> locally you will be able to see the special on august 12th at 7:00 p.m. in other markets it will air later in the fall in september. but tell us about the new album. we have been talking a lot about that crossover from classical and pop. how does on do that? >> that is an interesting question. >> but he have always loved classical music but -- but i have always loved classical music but so many other genres like pop and folk. i have worked along several other incredible songwriters and we knocked nonstop until we wrote or found perfect cover

stocks that fit my voice well and had bits of classical and pop and folk so in this album you have some songs that are very opera, like the song i'll sing later on today, [ non- english language ] , and also songs like pop. so it's kind of a blend. >> it's nice. it brings audiences that might not otherwise, you know, cross over together. i like it very much. and before you sing, we have about 30 seconds, the news of marvin hamlisch. you know, as a songwriter and -- it must hit you somewhere today. >> absolutely. it's always sad when you lose such an amazing talent and undoubtedly his works will continue to inspire. he leaves behind so much of that magic through what he composed. >> a life well lived and now we are in for a treat. you said the name of the song that you'll be -- [ non-english language ] >> one of the most well loved songs in all of opera from one of puccini's operas. i don't know how much your viewers like opera especially at 9:00 a.m. but we'll give it a shot.
