as a live look outside, for some of you it's a fairly stormy morning. not everybody getting the rain or the thunder or the lightning. there's a live view over the district right now. this is friday, august 10th, 2012. we could be in for some more storms. good morning, everybody, i'm tony perkins. >> and i'm alison seymour. happy you're with us on this friday. though the forecast isn't that great, but here's tucker barnes to put a nicer spin on it, right? >> i'll do the best i can. >> smile while you give it to us. >> it's friday. there you go. that's always a good thing. let's get your radar and kick it off. showers and thunderstorms moving through the area. need the rain, that's good news. but some of the rain coming down awfully heavy in parts of the area, particularly now south and east of the city as we get down towards southern maryland, leonardtown, if you cross the bay there.

looks like showers shortly in places like cambridge. fredericksburg, more heavy rain, as the first in a series of heavy rains are moving through. i think the rain will be with us the next couple of hours. temperature now at reagan national is 73 degrees. it's fallen 6 degrees in the past hour with the heavy rain that's been falling through the region. 80 annapolis. 60s to the north and west. 68 now in winchester. here's your forecast for today, stormy conditions. will be a bit of a break here for the middle of the day. but by late this afternoon and during the evening hours another round of showers and storms. highs only in the mid- to upper 80s, but very humid. more details on the forecast, i promise the weekend looks better, particularly sunday. those details coming up. let's do traffic with lauren demarco. >> good morning, tucker. slick pavement in some areas, but things are getting better. let's take a live look from trafficland. if you are heading inbound on 66th, heavy and slow traffic

from the fairfax county parkway towards 123. also 29, south of 66 is shut down in both directions. south of 15 actually because of a building fire. avoid that area if you can. earlier wreck 123 approaching 66, it's cleared out. same story westbound on the dulles access road. had an accident after the fairfax county parkway. that is gone at this time. 95, no real issues for you making the trip towards springfield. 395 slows from the beltway to seminary and again across the 14th street bridge. let's take a look at waze. we have somebody writing in about an accident on the outer loop of the beltway, just past the dulles toll roads. watch for that. traveling in montgomery county, outer loop heavy and slow from 95 college park to silver spring. reports of an accident near connecticut avenue. you can get the free phone app and join us, look for waze on your smartphone and download it. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. allison, over to you.

thanks, lauren. an investigation is underway into a church fire in prince william county. we are told the church near gainesville suffered extensive damage. no injuries reported. we'll continue to update this story throughout the morning. we have more breaking news, this time from overseas. the u.s. military confirms the death of three service members in afghanistan. they were shot dead by a man in an afghan army uniform. it happened overnight. authorities have not given many more details. this is the third deadly attack on coalition troops this week, all carried out by afghan's training to take over security. expanding gambling in the state of maryland, today is the second day of a special session in the state capitol. >> the governor called the lawmakers back for the special session. we get more now from sherri ly. >> reporter: tony and allison,

national harbor has a spot here for a las vegas style casino, the raceway is another possible location. today the senate will take a major step to that direction. they'll begin to debate this bill on the floor and it could be passed as early as today. legislators returned to the state capitol yesterday. a senate committee passed the bill, despite heavy opposition from the state's biggest casino owner. the bill would add a sixth casino in prince george's county, allow table gaming and allow compensation for casinos that lose customers to a new one. the house, which did not meet yesterday, will hold its first hearing today at 11:00. national harbor and mgm are lobbying for a high end casino, an analysis project the changes could bring in more than $200 million and jobs, but opponents

lobbied legislators to say no. >> don't bring vice within one half of a mile of the john hansen school. >> they believe table games at all five sites would generate about 1800 jobs. once a sixth site comes online, about 2,200 jobs. >> reporter: the path in the senate is likely to be easier where senate president mike miller backed the casino in prince george's county. but house speaker michael busch is more skeptical. miller yesterday said he expects they can get a deal done and he says it could be done, he hopes by next tuesday. that's the latest in national harbor. back to you. >> sherri ly, thank you. more blood shed in arlington county. this morning a man is recovering from stab wounds after he tried to stop a thief

from breaking into his car yesterday afternoon. the victim is in stable condition. the suspect is still on the the loose. it comes on the heels of four homicide in two weeks in that suburb. in maryland, a sad update to yesterday's top story. a second person has died in injuries sustained in an accidental house fire in capitol heights. the victim is 15-year-old ricky cole. the flames also killed her 5- year-old niece. man accused of a shooting rampage at a colorado movie theater will likely pursue an insanity defense. during a hearing yesterday, james holmes' attorneys told the judge their client is mentally ill. doctors will eventually evaluate the 24-year-old to determine if he is competent to stand trial. also yesterday, a group of news organizations asked the judge for access to documents related to the case. a move both the defense and the prosecution objects to.

the judge hasn't issued a decision yet. a crowd of thousands is expected to gather in wisconsin today to honor the six people killed last sunday in the shooting at a temple there. attorney general eric holder will speak at the event. the entire service will last 48 hours in accordance with sikh tradition. the temple reopened yesterday. today's service will be held at a nearby high school. the presidential race may now be an up hill battle for mitt romney. doug luzader has the story. >> reporter: we have new polling numbers here and they show how challenging this race is going to be for mitt romney. president obama touring an olympic training facility in the swing state of colorado, after complaining about his own contest in the role of outside republican groups. >> you've got these super pacs that are just, just going crazy. >> reporter: but the truth is,

it's the president's campaign and his outside groups that may be drawing blood on mitt romney. a new fox news poll shows president obama is widening his lead, up to 9 points, an eye opener for conservatives who say the attacks on romney have taken their toll. >> this poll is in response to the negative campaign against romney and its success. >> reporter: looking closer at the numbers on issues pertaining directly to the economy, romney is tied or leading. but on a host of other issues, including foreign policy and national security, the president has the advantage. look at the numbers among critical independent voters, where the president has an 11- point largent. what romney does have is a pending vp announcement. >> i certainly expect to have a person that has strength of character, vision for the country, that adds something to the political discourse about

the direction of the country. >> reporter: but the name of a v.p. candidate still a mystery, though we could hear an announcement any day now. in washington, doug luzader, fox news. despite the heavy rain storms we've seen in our area, the drought is getting worse elsewhere. it could impact not only the u.s. but the entire world. lack of rain is taking a toll on america's agriculture and that means globally could be a rise in food prices. 20% of the united states is in extreme drought condition and northerly 40% of the midwest is suffering. meantime, 90% of indiana, which is one of the nation's largest producer of corn and soybeans is in severe drought. tony? allison, robert griffin iii and the redskins are going to stick to the plan. >> let's go back to buffalo. the rookie quarterback played

making headlines this morning, federal investigators have issued a nationwide alert as they search for a woman accused of producing child pornography. they've released several photos, you're seeing them now, of this unidentified woman. investigators say she and a man appeared in videos with two victims, one of them possibly as young as 3 years old. goldman sachs will not face punishment for its role in the financial crisis. the securities and exchange commission commission has decided not to file charges against the bank over its billion dollar mortgage portfolio. goldman was accused of contributing to the melt down that crippled the economy. tropical storm ernesto is losing strength. it dumped dangerous rains and ripping roofs off of some homes

in the region. it's being blamed for the deaths of two fishermen who drowned. now we have a new tropical depression. >> we do? >> yeah. definitely picking up. maybe another one off the western coast of africa the next of days. >> oh, you have vacation plans. >> it scheduled around your vacation. >> you're mocking me, but i feel like it does. >> we have rain showers here. feels like a torrential downpour and parts of the area it is. currently 73 in washington. temperatures cooled off by 6 degrees in the past hour, so that's due to the very heavy rain we had. 87% humidity. winds out of the north and west at 13 miles per hour. want to focus here to our south and east. this is south and east of

washington, down 95, into southern maryland, yellows and rains indicating moderate to heavy rain rates. creeping up towards annapolis as well. most of us will see morning rain showers. morning commute i think will be a wet one. to the west, west virginia, we have a dry slot and additional rain showers and thunderstorms now into central ohio. here's the plan for today, morning rain, bit of a break, and later this afternoon the showers and thunderstorms, at least the threat of the showers and thunderstorms, will redevelop with the second band of rain moving through late this afternoon and evening hours. some of those storms could be strong as well. got to look out for that potential. your five-day forecast, once we get it out of here by tomorrow afternoon, less humidity and cooler temperatures. by tomorrow afternoon. sunday's high, 86 with sunshine, low humidity. monday looks great, upper 80s, back to 90 tuesday. we need the rain, let's hope we don't get too much at one time.

president clinton and a bi-partisan congress helped end welfare as we know it, by requiring work for welfare. but on july 12th, president obama quietly announced a plan to gut welfare reform by dropping work requirements. under obama's plan, you wouldn't have to work, and wouldn't have to train for a job -- they just send you your welfare check. and welfare to work goes back to being plain, old welfare. mitt romney will restore the work requirement, because it works. "curiosity." they are the first panoramic views of the gale crater since it landed monday. nasa officials say the color images of the crater are crucial to understanding the martian landscape. >> the images have given us our first sense of what this terrain is like. >> with those mountains in the background there, these deeply dissected mountain ranges, and it just looks a lot like what you see in the mojave desert. it's cool. >> the mission also includes analyzing rocks and soil and the search for chemical blocks for life. >> maybe it is the mojave desert. just kidding. one step forward, one step backwards for nasa. a prototype spacecraft crashed and burned moments after liftoff. no one was hurt. a team is investigating what went wrong. that's too bad. still ahead in our next

earliy morning. that's been slowing the commute, of course. gray, gloomy day today. not great looking today. but language in there, this weekend things will improve. >> a lot better? >> a lot better. let's go to the radar. showers and thunderstorm activity. yellows and reds indicating heavy rain rates. south of the city, charles county you'll get heavy rain, if you haven't already gotten some. and pushing into portions of southern anne arundel county, and annapolis, a good band of rain entering the bay. the rest of us getting some local rain showers. this will be with us here the next couple of hours. i think we'll see a bit of a break. let's switch maps. i think we'll get a bit of a break and later this afternoon

and tonight the potential for an additional round of showers and thunderstorms. there's your morning rain, and it's widespread, from virginia into upstate new york at the moment. this will lift to the north and east here. middle of the day, lots of cloud cover. might be a peek or two of sunshine. and off to the west our next spoke of energy this afternoon and tonight and could kick off another round of thunderstorms. be ready for that. the good news is eventually the cooler and drier air behind that front will move in and later tonight, during the day tomorrow, you'll notice the slightly cooler temperatures and the finally the humidity starting to kind of kick back here as we get into saturday afternoon. more comfortable air on the way, and i think by sunday, should be absolutely beautiful. temperatures now, fallen back with the rain, 73 now in washington. 79 in annapolis. 60s north and west. gaithersburg, you had a pretty good thunderstorm about an hour

southbound towards 175. heavy and slow there again, car fire in howard county on 95. bw parkway no issues for you. traveling 95 in virginia, northbound, activity there to the left side of the roadway. doesn't appear to be causing issues leaving the prince william parkway heading across the bridge. 395 slow approaching duke street. reports of a disabled vehicle near the exit for duke. and off and on the brakes heading across the 14th street bridge. one of our wazers was reporting an accident on the beltway, on the turnpike, no delays here. but watch out for that. looks like new talks in sports. i get though redskins nation is breathing easy after a solid start last night in buffalo. robert griffin iii looked sharp

in his first experience and the redskins won 7-6. joining us is wisdom martin and harvey. >> robert griffin iii, you saw him. what do you think, limited but what did you think? >> i thought that was good. the big thing i saw, one, he's poised in the pocket. he had a little bounce, so you knew he could run if he wanted to. but he looked down the field. i thought that was good. what are the positives and negatives, threw the ball well, control. one thing i did see, he was looking -- >> for receivers? >> yeah. more into the game, people will key on that. >> what do we look for going forward, other than not staring

down the receivers? i'm sure they'll work on that. but going forward. >> i think what the coaches did was good, because the game plan was not to give so much guys will see what are you going to do? toss the ball out, roll out of the way. if you look at it, that opens up the door for him to be able to move, go down the field, throw it to the tight end. i think they'll start using the tight end. he had a special receiver and i think you'll see more of that combination. >> other issues, did you see other issues -- i know it was the first preseason game. people can't overreact. >> don't do flips. >> everybody noticed that. >> don't try to tackle somebody -- [inaudible] -- the big question was the o line. you did see some weaknesses in the o line. >> the running game looked kind of iffy to me. i know it's preseason. >> you could see the line getting blown back some. that's something you have to work on. the good thing is you have a quarterback that can move a

little bit. you don't want to rely on his foot speed to be the big game winner. >> right. make sure that offensive line can protect your franchise quarterback. we saw the guy who replaced him. i don't want to get you to hating on him. >> i'm not hating on him. when you get a chance to play, and you know in the preseason you have a limited chance, you have to catch every ball, even if it's one ball. if you're a quarterback, you have to make all the passes, even if it's someone else's fault, you have to yell in their face. my job is on the line. this is your chance to do what you got to do. he may be content to be number two, or three. but, but -- >> or just on the roster. >> right. when you get a chance you have to produce. >> right. one more thing about rg3, leadership, did you see any of leadership qualities that everybody is talking about? they were saying he was big in practice, and being a leader and the face of the franchise. did you see that last night?

>> one good thing, you want to see your quarterback, if your receiver gets a touchdown, run and do the whatever they were doing, you want to see the lineman, if he touches, concern that the quarterback got touched. i thought there was leadership in the way he handled himself in interviews. he's a well spoken guy. he said the right things. the good thing i heard on the interview, he said, the game was easy compared to practice. what that mean is, if your defense is doing their job, dominate in practice, the game should be easy. good teams win because you have good players going against them. i thought that was really good. >> you've been through this, because you played in the nfl for a long period of time. he's a rookie. what hurdles can he face going forward from here? again, that was first preseason game. next you have three more. what kind of obstacles will he face going forward? >> just don't read the press clippings. staying away from the press. the biggest issue is you can start thinking you're all that.

it can mess you up. or you think you're all that and you have a bad game and don't let it go. if you have a bad game, learn from it. that's what preseason is about. if you have a good game, learn from it. the whole thing is don't look at yourself as the guy and be in control. >> the difference between preseason and regular season is huge, right? >> preseason is like, we didn't get to them, that's okay. real season, i didn't get to you in the first quarter, but -- [ laughter ] i'm going to get you the next time. >> right. we understand where you're going with that. making headlines, police have arrested a man in connection with an accidental deadly shooting of a 4-year-old boy. tyrone mcneal shot himself last month after finding the gun in the pickup truck. the stepfather is now charged with injury and cruelty to children. good news for those of you traveling by plane soon. it seems u.s. airlines are doing a better job when it comes to handling luggage.

this year they are on pace to post their best performances ever. to find out the best airlines, officials looked at how many bags were lost, delayed or damaged in the first six months of 2012. the top five with the best performances are virgin america, airtran airways, jetblue, u.s. airways, and delta airlines. the philippines picking up tons of mud and debris after 12 days of downpours sparked heavy flooding. the rain has let up, but it's being blamed for the deaths of 23. millions of others are still stranded. millions. what the power of mother nature can do. frightening thing. i feel like we keep saying it, but the weather systems around the world this year have been very unusual and devastating in many places. >> yep. >> just very, very tough. >> tough year for it. around here, overnight -- probably don't need to tell you -- good thunderstorms that got

rolling about 3:00 in the morning. still moving throughout the city. southern maryland getting the worst of it, with very heavy rain. possible of ponding out there on some of the roadways, particularly waldorf and la plata. west of chestertown, down south and west of chesapeake beach, another line of showers and thunderstorms dropping good rain rates. rain and showers with us this morning, and another chance for it this afternoon. let's go to future cast, let me show you what futurecast has in store. i'll put it into motion. first of all, i think around midday a break. might be still gray and gloomy out, but we probably will see a period here between 11:00 and 4:00 or 5:00 where not much rain. later rain and showers likely redevelop and could see a line of thunderstorms move through late afternoon and early evening. some of those could be on the

coordinator and ann watts is museum specialist. everyone at the station is wondering about riversdale house and riverdale park. sort is out. >> that's a mystery. we're not sure why the town is called riverdale park. we do know the man who conceived this house did name the estate riversdale. but some day maybe we'll know the answer for sure. >> reporter: or maybe not. maybe that's part of the intrigue and why you should come out this weekend. the other reason is the huge 17th annual battle of bladensburg encampent you are having. here's my question, the battle of bladensburg was not a good one for the americans. in fact, it was quite a low point. but from the low point comes great things, right? so why are we commemorating this? >> well, it is true that the battle of bladensburg was a bad defeat for the americans. the british marched up from nottingham and soundly defeated

the americans. most of the militia troop, and they were poorly led and poorly equipped. in fact, when they turned and ran, some people later called it the bladensburg races. of course, there have been horse races here as well. however, when the british then marched on baltimore three weeks later, the people in baltimore were determined that they were not going to be defeated. they stood their ground. the british tried to bombard fort mchenry, but finally gave up and sailed away. also at fort mchenry there was a man named francis scott key and he was watching from a ship, and he wrote a poem which was set to music which we call the star spangled banner. we like to say without the battle of bladensburg we wouldn't have our national anthem. >> reporter: let's walk and talk a little bit, because we are in the house. samantha, can you tell us about the mansion here and who lives here and the importance of it?

>> absolutely. this house is owned by rosa lee speir calvert. her family fled the french revolution and she married george calvert, a descendant of the founding family. we have history here and we're fortunate to have a lot of letters mrs. calvert wrote. from those we have a lot of information about how the house was furnished and a lot of information about who lived leer, what was going on here during 1812 and throughout the course of the time that mrs. calvert did live here. >> reporter: evidence of the importance of journaling. >> absolutely. keep your diaries, ladies. >> reporter: we're in the dining room. tell me about life in the mansion. >> the calverts had nine children who lived here. we have one who is right over here. caroline calvert and rosa lee. these are portraiteds of them. the other side, george calvert,

harbor this morning. sherri, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, allison. good morning, tony. there was a major step to building a casino here, to expand gambling in maryland. the house will meet today, and it could get passed in the full senate as early as today. maryland lawmakers went back to work for a special session yesterday in an 11-1 vote a senate committee passed the bill, sending it to the floor for debate and possibly a vote today. the proposed legislation would add a sixth casino in prince george's county and allow table games. it faces stiff competition. opponents called on lawmakers to say no, but supporters believe the state will benefit. >> all about jobs, this is all about revenue, this is all

years we say, this is going to be the most never campaign we've seen. and every election cycle they manage to tick it up a notch. but i have to say that i think that this ad from priorities u.s.a. really takes negative campaigning to a whole new level, with all of the context removed, it looks like a pretty damning spot in terms of mitt romney. then when you put all the context back in and you know the real story, i think the onus is back onto priorities u.s.a. is what were you thinking when you came out with this ad? and the obama campaign saying we don't know anything about this guy's story, and turns out they had this conference call back in may, that they are now acknowledging, it's really beginning to look like they took this one way over the top. now, in the same manner, there are a lot of complaints about the welfare ad that mitt romney's campaign put out there. so you know the old saying
