it started in northwest with a robbery along somerset, then just past 10:00 p.m., a robbery along rigs road. then just before midnight a woman tells police she was pushed off her bike along 11th street, northwest, she was robbed and threatened with what appeared to be a mallet the description is vague but police have this description, they are looking for three black men driving a four door, silver or tan vehicle in each case two suspects got out to commit the robbery and one stayed inside the car. >> overnight a dc police officer sprayed with a substance that could be pepper spray this happened 4:00 a.m. this morning, k street. police are searching for two trans gendered suspects the officer is currently being treated at a local hospital. we are also keeping an eye on a couple other big stories first, back to work for lawmakers in maryland working

to expand gambling in their special session to have legislature. friday the senate passed a bill expanding gambling by a vote of 28-14. the house is to gather at 0:00 a.m. this morning and the ways and means -- 10:00 a.m. this morning and the ways and means committee is set to work on the bill. crews will start to remove dozen offs trees in fairfax county. >> it was started after a decaying tree fell on a driver and killed him in great falls. good morning melanie. >> reporter: good morning sarah. drivers in this area, should be on the lookout for tree removal crews, throughout the next three weeks or so. they will be taking down trees, v dot looked at and determined were hazardous, dead or in decline as they called multiple defect. v dot and arborist crews inspected the trees after the massive old oliver's house oak fell july 17th killing carl ross as he drove past.

where rebel leaders said yes, there are al qaeda members within our ranks these members within their ranks are people who agree with them aid logically, agree with al qaeda aid logically. they share al qaeda's plan for a counter state. >> what is that? >> an organization that would run that part of the country, and basically, it is based on the islamic rule, that they low, this is the organize -- follow, this is the organization that says, if they reach out to us, we will reach back. they are trying to stay relevant. >> they have something to gain as well. >> absolutely. there would be a big vacuum keep in mind there are at least, three organizations, culture that is are going to be going head to head here you

have the sunis and others. and al qaeda has for the most party didn't fied with the suni sect and most likely going to support them but let's be clear this is not al qaeda central in pakistan or wherever the team may be, that are pushing this, these are people who are foreign fighters who fought with the al qaeda organizations given the message to go forth and try to do what you can to keep this organization relevant and then there are others who just simply agree with al qaeda who simply know where you can get weapons who simply know where the rebels can get support, and they are telling them this is where you can get it and we can help you get it and if we help you get it then perhaps you can help us. >> got you. all right. now, if al qaeda, is influencing this to some extent and some pippa thesers in rebel

forces -- some sympathizers in rebel forces, doesn't that in the u.s. put us in a strange position, we are supporting the rebels as well you have our sworn enemy supporting the rebels. makes for strange bedfellows. >> not the first time they did the same thing in iraq back during that war they looked for opportunities, to fight on the side of people who were fighting with the u.s. because they were trying to turn these people away from the u.s. remember the awakening that took place in iraq most of the people in iraq at the time, thought that al qaeda was fighting for them, and agreed in many situations to help al qaeda in any way they could until it was shown that al qaeda was killing, people indiscriminantly, then they showed the awakening and turned their backs on them.

al qaeda has fought to find cracks or seen where they could divide the u.s. or people the u.s. was supposedly trying to help or the u.s. agreed with them. they have fought back on numerous occasions around the world. they are a political organization as well. >> you are reporting this morning, on wtop we can't say al qaeda is gone, history, they don't have influence you are reporting on two particular individuals who as you say, are highly effective, when it comes to planning and that kind of thing. >> one of them has been out there for a long time he is the person that is thought to be the best equipped person to lead al qaeda central. he has been out there, an equivalent or a colleague the same age and experience wise as osama bin laden himself he is much better liked and

charismatic but there is another guy out there too, i spoke with a source from the un last week, who is the al qaeda taliban monitoring coordinator there, and he said to me, he is young, smart, savvy and he has experience in the u.s. because he lived in florida for a number of years right before he disappeared after the 9/11 attack. he has been spotted several places around the world he is out there, operational lisa surrey, good at what he -- operationally, savvy, good at what he does and possibly one of the most threatening possible targets for the u.s. at this point because of his capabilitythe fact he is familiar with the u.s. >> well, we have to continue to keep our eyes open and continue to follow what is happening in

after a weekend of side by side appearances, mitt romney and his newly named running mate are heading off in different directions. today romney heads to florida and ohio and wisconsin's congressman paul ryan will crisscross iowa. ryan and romney will likely push their economic plan trying to reassure seniors it won't strip their health benefits. ryan is known for his budget plan proposing big changes to medicare among other things. but in an interview with cbs's "60 minutes" that aired last night, the presumptive gop presidential nominee says he is running his campaign on his own budget and not ryan's. >> meanwhile, president obama will also be in iowa along with his rival's running mate to kick off a three-day bus tour. yesterday the president called paul ryan a decent man and articulate spokesman for mitt romney's vision, but a vision the president fundamentally disagrees with. new this morning,

maryland's house of delegates heads back to work on a gambling expansion bill. the state senate passed it friday in the second day of the special session to allow table games like poker at existing casinos and the construction of a new casino at national harbor. also new this morning, an effort to remove decaying trees from great falls, virginia. the plan comes weeks after a 40- ton tree fell and killed a driver. our melanie alnwick is live in great falls with the details. melanie. >> reporter: tony, v-dot says that drivers in the area can expect to see some tree removal crews sometime after 9:00 this morning probably in the area of riverbend road where 25 trees need to come down. it was july 17 when a massive oak tree just up the road on georgetown pike fell out of the blue and neighbors we talked to that morning said they had concerns not only about that tree, but about several others here in the great falls area

which is heavily wooded. it was the oliver's house oak tree as it was known that weighed 40 tons and it was believed to be 200 years old when it crashed on carl roth's car killing him. a second tree was also taken down because it was unsafe. both were on v-dot's right of way and although the tree was half dead, v-dot had no record of complaints and the agency doesn't routinely survey trees along its right of ways. after the accident however, v- dot did conduct an area wide survey with a state arborist. crews will now remove 59 hazardous trees in great falls including the 25 on riverbend road, 15 on browns mill road west of difficult run, 7 on beach mill, 6 on georgetown pike, four on walker road and 2 on udder back store road. these -- out other back store road. two trees at the corner of walker and georgetown pike have been talked about a lot by some

of of the residents. the removal will take place over the next three weeks. >> thank you, melanie. and in other news, the d.c. airport authority board is take some heavy criticism from federal officials. transportation secretary ray lahood tells the "washington post" he has serious questions about how the board has operated. he also accused some board members of lavish spending and cronyism but secretary lahood says he is confident in jack potter president and chief executive of the authority and hopes potter can clean up the issues. it's not what drivers want to hear but gas prices are going up. according to aaa, the national average for a gallon offing very now $3.70. that's up 31 cents from a month ago. prices are even higher in the district where drivers are

shelling out about 3.97 a gallon. in maryland it's 3.67. and 3.55 in virginia. in the penn state child abuse scandal the university is backing tough penalties that were imposed by the ncaa last month. in a conference call yesterday, a vast majority of the board of trustees supported the university president. rodney ericksson accepted the punishment handed down last month over how the university handled the molestation allegations against jerry sandusky. the miami dolphins released chad johnson on the same day the wide receiver was released from jail. johnson, formerly known as chad ocho cinco chases battery after his wife accused him of head butting her after an argument. johnson claims his reality tv star wife hit him. if convicted, johnson could face a year in jail and a

the pace improves. dealing with a structure fire north capital at new york avenue lanes open again traffic flowing freely no problems reported leaving florida towards the 3rd street tunnel. that's a check of your "fox 5 on-time traffic." back to you. >> thank you. this morning we're taking a closer look at the man running for vice president alongside mitt romney. and joining us now to talk about that -- to talk about the wisconsin congressman, paul ryan, is david h arsani. i apologize for butchering your name. let's talk about this. congressman ryan, how much did this energy the romney ticket? >> a ton. a lot of grassroots conservatives didn't trust romney as a conservative. ryan has a plan and talked

about things in an articulate way and less platitudes than most will be helpful. >> democrats are excited about the pick, as well. tell us why. >> well, i think part of that's a little bit gamesmanship. i don't know if they're really excited. perhaps they are. i think that's because there is a plan. there's something to point to, especially on medicare, where you can point to a plan not just say that the guy wants to change the way medicare, social security and spending but actually has a plan they can point to. >> they are talking about his economic policies he pushed and you mentioned medicare and the economics, as well. tell us how that's going to play into this. >> you know, the debate sort of disintegrated and got personal and nasty even though i don't think that's unprecedented, it happens all the time. now you can talk about issues and visions that are different, real cuts that ryan has made even though mitt romney said he is going to run on his plan which we're not sure about all

the specifics. surely ryan's plan will be a big part of the debate at least. >> you said nasty, which these campaigns typically turn nasty with the language on the commercials and rhetoric. is it going to change? i'm sure it's going to get worse. what's going to happen as far as like democrats? they have already come up with a commercial with ryan in it and vice versa. so it'going to get worse? >> reading all the pundits i hear it's going to get better because we'll be talking about issues. i'm skeptical but in the end they will attack ryan in ways that are probably unfair to his budget and then, you know, that will just escalate as usual. >> also we want to talk about how this impacts with the independent voters as well as women voters. >> well, i think there will be a rush to define who paul ryan is. and that's the most important part of the debate. i'm of the mind that people don't really move their votes

that much. there's really a narrow amount of people you can convince so it's important to define ryan right off the bat. same thing goes with the women who are undecided. i don't think there's much difference. >> you don't think the number in the middle is big enough to make a difference? >> i think it can make a difference in ohio and maybe in florida, places like that. >> battleground states. >> right. but i don't think it's a huge number. i don't think you're moving a ton of people but i think there are people who haven't -- might not like barack obama or what he has done but haven't said okay i can go with mitt romney. so i think that that number, you have to convince them that ryan is okay that they are going to be confident that they are not going to slash social security things like that. >> anything else we can look forward to as things continue to heat up between the two campaigns? >> you will see a lot of ads about ryan soon about his plan and just a fight on the air waves to see who can define him, yeah. >> so more fighting on the airwaves. >> yeah, yeah. >> as we get into this political battle for the white house. >> absolutely. >> all right. thank you very much for talking with us. we appreciate it.

president clinton and a bi-partisan congress helped end welfare as we know it, by requiring work for welfare. but on july 12th, president obama quietly announced a plan to gut welfare reform by dropping work requirements.

[ laughter ] >> this is back when i was working with donnie at wkys. >> yes. >> that's a long time ago. congratulations on all of your success. >> thank you. >> now, before we get into the whole whitney story, background but.

you're from here, which is wonderful. >> yes. >> and you have been doing makeup for quite some time. this is your love. >> mm-hm. >> and who have you work with? you've worked with a lot of famous people. >> angela bassett, megan good, venus and serena williams on the road with them, just a lot of different entertainers from the music world. >> so let me ask you the whitney connection, you met her briefly once before but how did you get the nod to work with her on this movie? >> it was at the director's request. i worked with saleem akeel on the movie jumping the broom with angela bassett. and so he wanted me to come back and work with him again and so i'm just glad that i was able to work with them. >> we have some photos from the shoot including you and whitney. your relationship -- i love this shop. you guys really developed a deep relationship.

working on a movie is months and the cast and crew become like family? >> that's right. >> so tell me about what it was like working with whitney and really getting to know her. >> she was a very endearing person. she was very personable. she was very funny, very whitty. and we had a whole lot in common. and we just immediately connected on set. we are both church babies so we grew up in church and we both are single moms to teenaged kids. so we had a lot of connections both from the east coast, so we connected in so many different ways on different levels. and it was a love fest. i mean, we laughed the whole time we were on set. we even taught her how to do the dugie. [ laughter ] >> you know, because we had a lot of free time in between camera set changes and things like that. so, you know, we tried to make it fun. we even did the michael jackson experience from the wii, she played that too. she was very good. so we had a good time. and that was the side of her

that most people don't get an opportunity to see because they see the icon, the legend and we got an opportunity to see whitney the lady. >> it is interesting because when you're filming a movie, the actors and the makeup artist, if you get along, it's very, very important because you spend a lot of time together, a lot of time in that makeup chair, more time doing that really than sometimes shooting the scenes themselves which can be just a minute or so at a time sometimes. whitney obviously we lost her, it was a shock. tell me how you found out and what your reaction was. >> i remember a friend of mine calling me and then i got all these phone calls around the same time. just seemed like it happened so quickly. and i was actually on my way to a birthday event and i just collapsed. i couldn't believe that someone that was so special to me was no longer here.

and it was very disheartening for me it hear the news. i actually thought it was a rumor because you know how twitter and facebook and things look that are. and the people that actually called me were actually calling to confirm it with me and not necessarily to tell me, not knowing that i had not -- i did not know. and i know that it was right before the event in l.a. that -- the grammy event and i just -- i was devastated. >> forgive me for asking this because it was a lot of speculation at the time about the troubles in her life and that kind of thing. did you see any of that when you were working with her on the set? >> absolutely not. she was in the most amazing place and you can really see that when you go out and see the film. you can really see, you know, it was -- she was so happy and so at peace. and she was very excited about the film. she was excited about coming back and making her, you know, her return to the big screen. and so this is her baby, "sparkle" was her baby her and

deborah martin chase who was the executive producer of the movie. you know, they had this going for 12 years. >> they optioned it years ago. leah was supposed to star in it originally. >> that's correct. they found their perfect person in jordin so this was a close to home project for her. it was in her heart so she was singing the parts with the girls and would do the movements with the girls. she was very, very excited to be a part of this. >> we're very happy that you came in to share some of these memories. by all accounts, everything i have read, this is a fantastic movie and from what i read everyone is going to be even that much more heartbroken because whitney could act. >> yes. >> and in this movie apparently, she does a really good job. >> she does a phenomenal job. she is a one-take wonder that's what we would call her on set. whitney you want to go through your lines? girl, i got it. i got it. and she had it! >> kym, come on the show again and continued good luck. >> thank you so much the good to see you. >> you, too. >> wisdom, back to you. get ready for an australian
