[ romney ] i'm mitt romney and i approve this message.
9:15 am
seen this? mitt romney claiming ththe president would end welfare's work requirements? i'm barack obabama and i approe this message the new york times calls it 'blatantly false' the washington post says: "the obama administration is not removing the bill's work requirements at all." in fact, obama's getting states to move twenty percent more people from welfare to work. and president clinton's reaction to the romney ad? it's just "not true." get the facts.
9:16 am
all right. you know, when the kids grow up and they go away to college some parents get sad by that. but maz rauber and amy reingold sent they are girls off to school and then start writing books for young adults. the first book in the series is capital girls concerning the adventures of well-off young washingtonians. there's a lot of parties, lots of shopping, dating, powerful men and a mysterious death, as well. so the authors published a book under the dual pseudonym ella monroe and join us now. thank you so much. >> thank you for having us. >> first off, how did ella monroe come up? your name maz rauber and amy reingold is nothing like ella monroe. how did you come up with that?
9:17 am
>> well, publishers like to have single bylines for books and it's easier for readers to find them in stores. st. martin's our publisher said a presidential sounding name would be good and my mother's maiden name is monroe so we came up with monroe and we both admire eleanor roosevelt so there you go. >> so what gave you the idea behind the book? i understand both of you have girls and met when they were kindergarten playmates. so that's the back story. what gave you the idea surrounding this to do this story? >> how hot d.c. has become when obama was running for president. the city became aive look and our kids were so excited about politics and we thought, wow, this is what maybe the idea of politics and teens and all the excitement and life of teens in d.c. could make a great book. >> give me an idea of what
9:18 am
we'll notice in the book. i was reading some information about it that feels like we are going to hear about and read about real places we see and go to in d.c. >> yeah. >> so this will really be an interesting book for people in the d.c. region. >> one of the characters is almost d.c. we tried to show what a great city it is, beautiful, historic, fun, lots and lots of fun, you know, mostly the book is just about kids growing up like -- i mean they're privileged but every -- you know, every kid has sort of teen angst. but these kids are in the spotlight and they also are pawns in their sort of parents' gameplaying so that's the difference that mostly just a really fun romp. >> "capital girls" is about girls in the capital and we're local, and we try as maz said that we wanted d.c. to be showcased as sort of a character in the book because it's such an amazing place to live and a lot of people, i
9:19 am
think from having spoken to friends, don't realize that d.c. is hometown for a lot of people. just a political center is what they say. >> right. they don't realize the life that goes on with it. give me an idea how much did some of the stories that are happening in washington, d.c. influence what are in the three books which -- the throw books are already written and just one is out. so how much does that influence them? >> well, i mean, it's all just a big sort of fantasy. but i used to be a reporter covering various scandals on capitol hill be and the clinton. even kind of back then, i noticed the kids -- even though every president tries to protect his kids from whatever is going on, they still somehow are used to a certain extent, you know, chelsea was a buffer for her parents. the bush girls were caught underaged drinking in texas.
9:20 am
>> huge headlines. >> so you feel sorry for these kids in a lot of ways as much as the parents try to protect them. there's only so much they can do. >> i understand, too, in the book part of it -- you have tomorrow pretty good players. one girl is the daughter of the chief of staff to the president. >> dating the president's son. >> it gives you an idea how interesting it could get. i have to ask you, how do your real-life daughters feel about this or your real-life children, you know do a lot -- are a lot of people afraid that's a story about me or not so much? >> i'm sure a lot of kids would think, oh, i can recognize this character or that. but nobody -- it's just a composite of different stories, different people. nobody is -- >> there were a couple of twists early on that my daughr read and said, mom, you have to take that out. that's too close to so-and-so. don't embarrass me, mom. [ laughter ] >> well, thank you both. the book is "capital girls,"
9:21 am
the first of three books coming out. when does the next one come out? >> november 13. >> during the election. yeah. >> absolutely. thank you both for coming in. we appreciate it. >> thanks a lot. >> tony, back to you. >> thank you. a week after landing on the red planet, "curiosity" is getting an upgrade. already. up next, a look at the newest images coming from the rover. >> and, honest or sneaky? an experiment tests people in the d.c. region. find out how well we did first. now, let's check in with holly. >> hey, tony. >> reporter: you might not expect to run into a barn owl up close at a county fair unless you come to the montgomery county fair where we are live this morning at the gaithersburg fairgrounds and raptors up close is one of the many special programs they have for your family. we'll talk about that and more all live later on "fox 5 morning news." stay with us.

north and west of town. 76 dulles. much of the region here was in the upper 50s and low 60s this morning. so again, very comfortable start for the day one of the nicest so far this month. 76 in fredericksburg, 60s in winchester, 66 degrees, 73 right now in culpeper. temperatures cooperating, so is the humidity. dew point temperatures currently in the low 60s. this is why the air doesn't feel so bad. 61 right now in washington. that current dew point 66 in leonard. you get the idea. 61 martinsburg. anytime numbers are below 65 doesn't feel bad. should be a decent day temperatures and humidity. that will remain in check like yesterday. satellite and radar, there is the cloud cover. you can see the milky white. the high, thin clouds we are not expecting any showers or thunderstorms today. our next best chance for that will be tomorrow. there is a cold front out to the west and that will increase the clouds around here later this afternoon and tonight. i think most of the showers will hold off until tomorrow

but by tomorrow afternoon, the decent chance of showers and thunderstorms around her as the front moves through. behind that front more seasonable air for the middle of the week. no upper 90s, no triple digits this week. 90 today, mostly sunny skies, warm this afternoon no doubt about it. west winds at 5 but not terrible humidity so it should be an okay afternoon. cloudy tonight becoming increasingly muggy overnight. 74 the overnight low ahead of the cold front and there's your five-day forecast. as you get into the next couple of days, looks like our best chance of thunderstorms this week will be tomorrow. wednesday, thursday, friday, upper 80s to about 90 degrees. that's what i call just fine for the middle of august. all right. that's a look at weather. tony and sarah, back to you. >> you f. are you making your dog fat? canine obesity is one of the fastest growing health problems seen in dogs today and the extra weight can lead to a great number of health problems and it can be easier for smaller dogs to pack on the

pounds quickly. >> annie yu is learning more about obesity in small dogs and here's how you can help. >> reporter: diet and exercise are obviously a big part of some of the reasons why your dog can become over weight and no one knows that better than valerie, the owner and founder of bistro bites. yoshi is your dog. your line is all natural healthy snacks. >> yes. >> and you made this just for small dogs in mind. >> right. the problem that i had when i first got yoshi was she was about 10 weeks old and weighed about 8 pounds and the problem that i had is i couldn't find anything small enough. so what i did was what most of us do is we break up bigger bites for the dogs. but you find out that there's no way to control how much they get. there is no way to control the calories or the portions. that was a big problem plus i also looked at the ingredients and realized that there were a lot of things that they really
9:35 am
didn't need that we don't get like meal, chicken meal. we don't eat that in our food so why are we feeding it to our dogs? so i made bistro bites using buckwheat flower without gluten and gluten allergies are a big problem with dogs. you find that with a lot of dogs when you start changing their dog food, get sick. that's a gluten allergy. so bistro bites was no glutens in t outside of buckwheat flower it has garbanzo or coconut flower whether it's savory or sweet and it's all natural. the veggies are what we eat on our diets, peas, carrots and broccoli. >> because it's natural you can give it to the cat or other animals. >> we found that one of our folks actually went home one night and they were late and they had actually had some of the chicken lives and their cats just ate it up. so -- >> reporter: there are some breeds that are actually prone to becoming obese.
9:36 am
let's talk about that before we jump into some of the products here. >> right. and you'll find that it's just not just, you know, the smaller dogs like terrier or dachsund. the cavalier king charles is a big one. >> reporter: dachshunds so two pounds could add a lot. >> some of the larger dogs. you would never think that a bernice mountain dog would get heavy but they do. so you have to be careful with all the dogs you feed. >> now, what are some of the tips for people that are working to get their dogs' weight down? how do you incorporate some of these into their diet? >> it's all about portion control. so one of the things that is unique about bistro bites is actually the size. for a dog 10 pounds and under, this is the small size. for someone like yoshi, mediums are -- they are the right size
9:37 am
about 4 calories each. >> 4 calories. >> these are our training treats. and it's peanut butter and applesauce and buckwheat flour. so you know, the good thing about these is we package them in a one month supply. and the reason we do that is, you know, although you can find smaller biscuits on the market today, you get hundreds in a box. and you have no idea how much to feed the dog. so this actually, you know, you learn two to three treats a day is really what the dog should get. >> excellent. thank you. these are available on your website, bistro-bites.com which we linked to our website. i'm sure a lot of you are wondering who this little girl s her name is sky and, of course, sky didn't come alone. she brought her friends along. we have the s girls here because they are all named with ss. sophia, sugar, sadie and sky. they're all from the same
