7:34 am
virginia he told an audience, mitt romney would wreak havoc on the middle class if elected the vice president said rom know plans to let big -- romney plans to let big banks make their own rules and put the middle class quote unquote in chains. jim innocenzi and emily executive director of young democrats of america sitting in for you know, jim's usual sparring partner, peter feen who is off vacationing. what is he doing? he is like his place in the cape i don't know. any way, thank you for being here. >> thank you for having me. >> let's start off talking about this comment made yesterday by biden he was mentioning to this crowd they would -- romney would unchain wall street regulation and saying after that, put you back in chains. some said he was talking to a
7:35 am
significant amount of african voters, some are saying this is a new low. >> isn't this the interesting part about having biden in a race you really never know what he is going to say i think his larger points that romney and ryan want to go back to failed economic policies that got us into this mess to begin with, unfortunately was lost by his poor choice of words, but you really never know what biden is going to say >> do you think it is okay what he said? >> no, i think it was an extremely poor choice of words given the context he was in virginia i understand later in the speech he thought he was in north carolina not that it makes it better but when biden goes off that is biden. >> it is one of those moments you just slap your forehead and go really? again? you really do. and i think the amazing thing is this guy has been doing this four yeargetting away with it four years if this was a
7:36 am
republican they would scream to get him off the ticket. just tone deaf and not a great thing to say in the setting he said it in. you know, emily is right, you know, his point was well taken if you would have said it in a different way but it is just more of the same. the sad part is, is there a lot of bigger issues we need to talk about now we will spend a day talking about the biden comments. >> let's talk more then about perhaps what you know people are talking about congressman paul ryan, obviously romney's pick both sides are saying different things about that. but there was some previous comments made, from erskine bowls. giving paul ryan a complement
7:37 am
let's listen to what he had to say about him >> he is honst, straightforward, sincere and the budget he came forward with is just like paul ryan, a sensible, straightforward, honest, serious budget and it cut the budget deficit just like we did by $4 trillion. >> emily, people look at this and say wow, he is saying he is on the democratic side he is giving complements here does this make democrats hypocritical. >> well, i think there is a different between respecting someone respecting their drive for public service absolutely respect that for paul ryan he had a drive for public service there is a difference between that and respecting him as a person and agreeing with his fundamental ideology and business of the country i definitely agree with jim, earlier points we should focus on the policies focus on what will make for a better future and the president has welcomed ryan to the race, and he
7:38 am
fundamentally disagrees with his vice. >> how much does this help? >> well, it didn't take long for democrats to jump all over paul ryan. and of course frankly paul ryan said there is a big difference between his view how the country should run versus how the president's view of the country should run but, what you hear, the whole you know thing about medicare and all the rest, that argument you have, it is sort of tampered by a guy who is bill clinton's chief of staff who basically said more than i just respect this guy he is a bright guy and has serious ideas which frankly is what i think you saw coming out of this weekend this is a guy i think this whole romney ryan ticket is now going to be about big ideas. i think it does hurt him because i think democrats look petty when they start scaring people and calling people different names and doing things like that. it goes back to what we were talking about which turns off a lot of voters let's have
7:39 am
discussions about policy not play these little games. >> i think it is sadly almost surprising, given our last vice presidential nominee, on the republican side he is coming in with strong ideas, with a clear vision, so i think, you know, we are very happy, everyone,. >> i think the voters in america really are looking for answers they want solutions for the problem. so for people to call each other names it just doesn't work any more i think they are willing to listen to both sides of the story. think this is a refreshingly good idea. we will see what happens. >> we will also see what happens as the conventions come up here quickly, looking ahead to the republican convention, we see chris christy and marco rubio having pretty big roles at the convention. is that looking forward to the 2016 presidential ticket? are there going to be rising stars in a sense? >> well, you presume that mitt
7:40 am
romney loses, you are talking about 2016, no. you hope mitt romney is running for re-election, 2016 but the bigger picture, a it is in the florida, marco rubio is a hispanic has a great story to tell, chris christy is a republican governor democrat state, said a lot of things controversial but they are blunt and in your face and not the politicalically correct thing to say. i think both cases it will be a good night for the republicans >> any reason we think sarah palin -- was there anything behind that why she wasn't asked to the podium >> i don't think it was her choice someone has a reason. they are also not asking the most recent former president, bush to speak they are trying to distance themselves from the most recent republican party of the past. >> thank you so much for coming in. >> you bet. >> maybe we can get her back in here to take you on soon.
7:41 am

chance for education it's good because an educated person is what our society needs. what i would have liked to see president obama have done is attach a caveat to it where armed with a degree from our colleges in public health or maybe economics or accounting, they would go back to their home countries and serve for two years in their home countries so they become familiar with the problems in their home countries so that their children don't have to leave, so their children could be the foundation of building mexico, el salvador, honduras, because at the end of the day, i think it's important that service be part of whatever we offer those in this country illegally, as well. >> you also argue that one of the underlying problems is that in some of these other countries, poor countries, because it's so poor there, that's why people want to come here which we all know. but you say that our government should do something to help support those poor economies. >> yes. i'm a foreign policy expert and
8:18 am
wrote this book from that perspective. if american foreign policy starts focusing on latin america instead of pacific, we will create wealth in our southern hemisphere. let's just take an example. today we have 240,000 el salvadorans in our community in microloans for these salvadorans, hard working folks to be able to go back to their country, $3 billion is a huge amount of money, so they all pool their resources together, they go back to el salvador, open up a chipotle, a mcdonald's franchise, now what we have done is we have allowed a group to go back voluntarily, absolutely voluntarily, but then we have created jobs for the african-american community. one -- >> here. >> here in our country. one of the biggest unjust happenings in my opinion is that both political parties have abandoned the african- americans. >> you say that is because the
8:19 am
young african-american community, those are the people who frequently lose jobs to these illegal immigrants. >> absolutely. absolutely. today in ward 8 in washington, d.c., we have 33% unemployment. in baltimore, 44% of african- american teens are unemployed! 44%! when today, 1.7 million more young people enter the workforce because of the president's executive order, what's going to happen to these young teens? it's only natural that they are going to get into trouble. and that's not right. we need to find justice for both sides of the equation. >> what about the argument that some people make, though, that, you know, people -- you're saying that some of these jobs are going to illegal immigrants. but what about the argument that some people make that some young americans don't want these jobs. otherwise, they would be applying for the jobs. they don't necessarily apply for the jobs. and some of them aren't qualified for even some of the most basic jobs because of lack of education or opportunities.
8:20 am
>> i don't buy that argument. i think politicians are being very disingenuous to the american people when they suggest that you and i are lazy and don't want to do those jobs. i live in an area where a mile from me is a place called tobey town. it's african-american. it's an enclave full of people ready, willing and able to work. but they can't. why? because when you have a huge pool of labor, wages go down. and when wages go down, who will want to be able to work at $5, $6 an hour? what we need to do is create wealth south of the border so there is a magnet for those illegal immigrants to go back voluntarily but so our american population especially african- americans gets a chance at the american dream by allowing this broken immigration system to continue, we are relegating minorities to

third class citizenship. >> your five-point plan for immigration policy, start with make english official u.s. language. enforce immigration laws that currently exist. five-year immigration moratorium reevaluate the reunification of families and the like and promote economic growth in poorer nations. >> the last point promoting economic growth, if we just redirect part of our trade from china to mexico and el salvador, last year tony we imported $8 billion worth of toys from communist china. imagine if we manufactured that in central america or mexico. that's the biggest magnet we could provide for legal and illegal populations if they so choose to go back. that's what we need to do. >> some people say making english the official language which many states have getclaired that and putting a moratorium an immigration is a little harsh. you're the son of immigrants from iran. >> exactly. if i didn't study english, if i did not know the english
8:22 am
language, i wouldn't be sitting here talking with you. it's very important that immigrants learn english because studies show their wages increase by 30%. so english should be taught. english must be the official language because it's the glue that holds us together. as far as the moratorium, i believe we should keep open the country for refugees who are escaping political persecution, religious persecution, but the moratorium that i'm talking about is so that we can get a handle on our immigration problem which is tied to the economic vitality to america. neither political party is addressing it and that's why i wrote in book. it impacts our economy. >> one word answer really, the obama administration, what grade would you give them on their immigration policy? >> i think spot on in terms of wanting to provide education opportunities, but i would -- not spot on because i think that part of electioneering, i see a pandering that's going

we're taking a closer look at mars with the latest images from nasa's curiosity rover. joining us now we're going to turn to an expert to talk about this with more information on this is doug mcchristian director of the mars exploration program at nasa headquarters right here in d.c. thank you very much for coming in to talk with us. appreciate it. we are going to start off talking about these images. let's put them up now. the first four we're going to talk about. the first is the msl landing sites. >> this is not a brand-new picture but it's important for context. you can see where we landed and all the different pieces we leave behind. the descent stage and some others. what's important about this is the context of where we are. you see this light toned area on the upper right and then you see where we landed off to the left of that and just straight south of below that -- below that light area is another what the scientists call a unit. these three are very interesting because it looks like this is actually potentially water runoff from
8:35 am
the sides of the crater in ancient mars. so we have three different areas to look at right away given the scientists something exciting within a couple of hundred yards of the landing site. >> there is a possibility there could have been water there at some point, based on this. the number 2 picture we'll look at here rtg and explain what this is all about. >> this is one of the things that really makes this rover very different. this is a radioisotope thermal generator. it creates electricity with the decay of plutonium. this will produce electricity for us for almost two decades, no solar panels, no dust build- up. so it's a constant trickle charges on the batteries which is great. what's also neat about this picture is it gives you an idea of what the hardware looks like. you can see in the lower left corner looks like a little stick poking up. that's a sun died so it does a number of things for us. it allows us to understand what the angle of the sun is so we know where to point and not to point cameras. it's a calibration target for our cameras so we can understand exactly how the focus is working.
8:36 am
and what's also cool about that is that's a leftover from spirit and opportunity. we still had one on the shelf so we reuse things whenever we have the opportunity to save money as best we can. so you can see the antennas. the coffee can sticking up is the antenna where we send commands into the rover. and a communication antenna. the northern rim of the crater is about 20 miles away so you can see how far and how large and how deep this crater is. really interesting context picture. >> let's look at the third one here. the view of the blast zone. >> so when we came down on the sky crane, and we rolled the rover down on the cables and set it down, those eight engines on the sky crane were still running and what we found is four blast areas two on each side of the rover where those engines have actually blown the dust away. now, we see them on the right and the left. these are on the left side of
8:37 am
the rover. what's interesting about these is that it's blown so much material the way it's taken it down to the underlying bedrock. the next picture is a zoom in on that right hand one. >> mm-hm. >> and what you can see in that if they will bring it up -- there we go -- is layered rock. this is a really interesting thing. we have never seen anything like this on mars before. so it's going to be very interesting to explore this with the scientists. so there's fragments that have come off. a vertical piece there looks like we actually broke it off of the underlying material and it's like a piece of bread standing up on the end. so it's very interesting. i'm going to put a plug it for our website. >> all right. >> people can go to nasa.gov/mars and all these pictures and more are available. you can download these panoramas we're now taking in high resolution and zoom in and zoom in and zoom in and get right down to the pebble size and see what we're doing and follow the mission with us. >> we have 30 seconds left
