welcome back. it's 9:1. if you or someone you know are dealing with cancer, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind. those diagnosed with cancer often times experience anger, denial, shock and sadness. this morning, we are learning about ways you can help someone cope with the disease or how you can deal with it firsthand. dr. stewart fleischman is a cancer expert and author of "learn to live through cancer, what you need to know and do." this is the book right here. it is out now. there it is right there. you can see it. thank you, doctor for coming in.
9:15 am
i want to jump right in. a lot of the focus on the book is on treating and caring for the whole person when they are dying with cancer. what do you mean by that? >> well, getting a diagnosis of cancer is devastating in a number of ways and it's very high-tech. we sometimes lose the fact that there's a human being involved in getting the diagnosis and going through treatments and we need to be able to factor that in and make sure all people's needs are taken care of not just the technical ones. >> you stress that it's important that this process begins from the moment of diagnosis. >> that's the innovative part. it used to be that people went all the way through treatments and then were very fatigued, lost our gained a lot of weight and very afraid. there are a number of things that people can do from the day of diagnosis on so that they don't have to feel that way and they can focus their attention where it pays off the most. >> you are talking to patients or those who care for their patients or loved ones, what have you, but in some respects
9:16 am
you're talking to doctors as well, right? >> yes. there's actually a companion guide for the professionals about how to use the "learn" system. >> one of the primary features of the book. can you give us a sense and explain what that is? >> sure. even if people go through treatment with radiation and chemotherapy together, there's a lot of down time during the week. and often people don't know what to do with themselves or not working and they are not going to school. so the idea that you sit down for a few minutes every week and make yourself a little lesson plan, turn off the computer and tv. yourself, with your family, go through the things that you will do that week in all the different aspects so "learn" living, make life meaningful do something for yourself or others. e, education, learn about how people cope, learn about my illness, learn about my treatment, learn about what i need to do. a, activity. no one likes to think about exercise so it's activity. movement is essential. that can be tailored to your
