this morning. and i happened to walk by when he was warming up a few minutes ago. you just hear the voice and you stop and where's it coming from? sounds that good. good morning everyone. >> it's a jam-packed hour. hi there i'm tony perkins and tucker barnes is also with us in the weather center with the latest on today's forecast. >> hey tony and hey sarah. good morning everybody. temperatures rightn and out in the 70s and going to be kind of hot and steamy here the middle part of the day with scattered showers and thunderstorms returning the later part of the afternoon. but we'll take it. 74 right now in washington and 70 this morning in baltimore. 76 now ocean city and still 60s to the north and west winchester currently 66 degrees. all right we're looking at the satellite and radar, to the north and west the white cloud cover. and some rain showers and thunderstorms starting to break out along that cold front. that will be moving through later this afternoon and tonight and early sunshine and afternoon clouds with scattered

thunderstorms developing. a few could be on the strong side and then clear during the day tomorrow and allow the cooler air to work in here. more details on how nice around the weekend coming up. today 92 in washington and let's see fredericksburg 93 degrees, we'll be a little hot and steamy for the friday. more details in a couple of minutes. back upstairs to you. thank you very much tucker. and topping the news now at 9:00, two u.s. troops have been gunned down by an afghan police officer. may toe says the shooting happened today in a western province as the americans were helping train the officer and other afghan security forces. this is the second such attack in a week. last friday, six u.s. soldiers were shot and killed by two afghan officers. today shooting commons on the heels of -- comes on the homes of another tragedy in afghan on the. the downing of a blackhawk helicopter. what brought the chopper down yesterday killing seven u.s.

soldiers and two afghanistans. the taliban was quick to claim responsibility but nato cannot con farm that. the big story we are following this morning, state are taking action to prevent the west nile virus from spreading. this is as the country experiences the worst outbreak ever. >> runs of west nile cases have been reported all over the u.s. including some in the area. our own lauren demarco is here to tell us about the disease. >> reporter: the numbers are really freightening. now here in our area we know that two people have come down with the virus in maryland the most recent a 70-year-old patient in the d.c. metro area. virginia also reported two cases one in southwest virginia and the other in the northwest part of the state. officials say these numbers are normal for our area for this time of the year. but take a look at this map. we are in the midst of the nation's worst outbreak of the west nile virus since it was first detected in the u.s. in

199. nearly 700 cases nationwide including 26 deaths. this map is from the centers for disease control we believe site and the -- website and the information was just updated a few days ago but new cases continue to pop up including the ones in virginia. the concentrated areas all of the gash green dots. nearly half of all west nile cases in the u.s. so far this year are in texas. in dallas county, it's killed at least ten people and caused more than 200 others to get sick. for the first time in 45 years, the county sent up planes to spray the area with insecticide last night. they had to wrap up early because of rain showers but be be at it again tonight. folks there happy about this spraying that we've heard from. >> i just never seen them this bad. >> i think we -- need to get rid of the mosquitoes and obviously causing a lot of sickness and some deaths. so i'm all for it.

>> it's killing people. that's enough you don't need to know any more. >> reporter: now there has been some continue verysy with some residents expressing concerns that spraying could harm their children, pets or other useful insects. the environmental protection agency says the chemicals don't pose a significant threat to wildlife or the environment although it does acknowledge no pesticide is 100% safe. as for the risks from west nile doctors say most people with the virus won't get sick but about one in 150 people will develop the severe form of the illness. symptoms including headache and fever can lead to a coma and muscle weakness and of course death. you're urged to dump any stander water out from near your home and yard and be sure to check for that. if you're spending any time outside wear repellent and protective clothing and some light long sleeves and pants particularly around dawn and dusk when they are most active.

>> they have been veritive this year. thank you. out west fire crews have lifted some evacuation ordered as they continue to fight wildfires but some washington state residents still don't feel safe from the flames. the crews have made some progress containing the fires burning across the state but watching the weather conditions over the next few days. health officials in california between a man and a woman contracted a rare rodent borne disease at yosemite park. the hantavirus was found. the woman is seriously ill but is expected to survive and the man died. the two victims didn't know each other. each cabin was thoroughly cleaned. sarah, the shooting at the family research council's head quarters in northwest d.c. continues making headlines this

morning. the suspect 28-year-old floyd lee core kins is being hold without bond and must grounds a mental evaluation. corkins appeared in court for the first time yesterday and he's facing assault and firearms charges. on wednesday he allegedly opened fire on a security guard in the lobby of the offices. this morning we are starting to learn more details about the security guard people around the world are calling a hero. leonardo johnson is 46 years old and has a 24-year-old daughter. the family research council says he was only a part-time security guard and served as the building's operation manager. he was shot in the arm when a gunman opened fire in the lobby of the family research council's headquarters. johnson is still in the hospital but is expected to make a full recovery. fire and ems investigation only only fox r5 and we are learning that two ambulance crews may have actually discussed an emergency

transport amongst themselves. all while a 93-year-old woman with a head injury waited for help. sources tell us that switching out the two balances caused a 15 minute delay in getting the woman to the hospital. fortunately she survived and and now recovering at home after five day hospital day. >> to the emergency and that's why we're investigating it very actively and we will take appropriate action. >> d.c. first responders are supposed to be on the scene in less than seven minutes according to department guidelines. in the case the response time was more than double that. gay marriage, gambling and immigration. maryland voters will already decide on those issues this november. now a fourth big referendum could be added to the ballot. the maryland court of appeals could rule as soon as today whether to put a new redistricting map to the public vote. they redrew districts after the census. that changed republican congressman roscoe bartlett's district to include a huge

number of democratic leaning voters. the road to the white house passing through our area once again. today republican vice presidential candidate paul ryan will be campaigning in virginia. wisdom martin back now with the details on the visit plus the latest numbers that are coming out of the battleground state. >> say are the latest information is that now we are hearing the obama campaign just within the last hour or so came out with a special offer to mitt romney saying if he releases five years of tax returns they won't credit same him for not releasing them any more. a new poll showing president obama leaving romney in -- leading romney in virginia. the race to white house comes to virginia once again. now republican vice presidential candidate paul ryan will be in glen allen this morning and then in springfield this afternoon. the campaign for the moment continues to focus on medicare while issues about running mates and taxes tax returns are keeping both sides on the

defensive. now mitt romney rolls up his sleeves and pulls out a white board and to literally sketch out the differences between his plan and the president's plan when it comes to medicare. on another topic, the white house says despite some recent gaffes by joe biden and this one's gotten a lot of attention as well. he remains the president's vice presidential pick even though john mccain for one says that biden should be replaced. >> and while i appreciate i have great admiration for and respect for and a long relationship with senator john mccain, but one place i would not go for advice on vice presidential running mates is the senator mccain. >> meantime, maryland congressman chris van holland has an important role to keeping democrats in the white house. the "washington post" and the "new york times" reports that he agreed to play ryan in the vice presidential debate preparations, is van holland has great insight about ryan having worked closely with him during last year's debt ceiling

negotiation. back to you sarah. >> thank you. jesse jackson jrgot a visit from a former congressman who also suffers from bipolar disorder. patrick kennedy stopped by the mayo clinic yesterday. he spent about an hour with jackson and says the chicago democrat is in a deep depression and has a lot of work ahead. but he also says jackson recognizes the challenges he faces and has great determination to recover. kennedy retired from congress last year and he is also been treated at the mayo clinic in minnesota. making headlines overseas and we start with a horrific massacre in south africa that was caught on video. riot police opened fire on 1,000 striking workers at a mine killing more than 30. and this morning, south africa is in shock over the worst shootings since the apartheid era. now we are not going to show you the video which shows police raising their machine guns and cutting down dozens of miners. this is part of it but we won't show you that part. police are blaming the striking miners but there's now a full

investigation into the massacre. and the president is cutting short a foreign trip to deal with the crisis. imagine being on an airplane when the crew says you have to land because you're low on fuel. then they ask you to chip in for the gas. this happened to passengers aboard an air france flight. it was going from paris to beirut wednesday and had to make that energy fuel landing in damascus, syria of all places. passengers were asked to see whether they had enough cash the pay for more fuel. air france says the crew only asked for cash as a precautionary measure because sanctions now in place against syria made the fill-up complicated. it says the airline wound up paying for the fuel without the help of the passengers. >> yeah. a lot of people don't even have cash on them anymore. i'd be like i have $1. >> it would be a strange you know request. >> it would be. all right, well coming up director -- combining director and actor there. director actor producer and he does it all and a very busy man. we are talking about spike lee.

of. that showed "she's got to have it." i rebel specifically going and just -- the movie was so fresh and so different from anything and i was an immediate fan. >> thank you. >> i am thrilled tommy you. >> love and support all through the years. >> i want to talk about and first about the new movie. you must be very excited about that because you're really out there and really pushing this. >> to be honest i'm excited about everything i do but the reason why i have to push it so much is because i -- i self- finance the film. and also self-distribution. there are no -- million dollar ads for this film. you won't see a tv commercial. >> you got to get out there -- >> got to get out there and get people like yourself to help spread the word. >> tell us about the movie. >> "red hook summer" is about the young kid. 13-year-old kid in the land of suburban atlanta. single mom and being sent to the hood. the props of red hook, brooklyn is spend the summer with her with his grandfather who he's

temperature 73. and again these temperatures are going to jump pretty good. 10, 15 degrees before all is said and done here. up ahead of the front. the winds now shifted out of the south and west and that's going to push up not only the temperature back in the low 90s but the humidity. remember yesterday we have a bit of a break? today it will be back and i think you will really notice it this afternoon. satellite and radar showing you the cold front. the clouds will start to move in later this afternoon and late today. 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 tonight we'll see showers and thunderstorms break out along this front. the good news behind the front, cooler and drier air will start to move in for your day tomorrow. so i mean we're going to open the windows and turn off the air conditioner i think saturday afternoon and saturday night and sunday here it's going to be really nice. here's the futurecast put it in motion for you and look what happens here by 7:00, 8:00 tonight indicating some showers and thunderstorms breaking out. if you're headed to nationals game, i think they'll get it in. but you may be dodging some rain drops here as the rain gets going. still 10:00 some showers and

thunderstorms across the area. one other feature tomorrow morning we're going to clear out gradually here. now south and east of the city. southern maryland and lower eastern shore the clouds will hold in longer for you and there could be a period of showers during the day saturday down at the beaches. not a perfect weekend down at the etch be as, still temperatures will be about -- beaches, still temperatures will be about 80 or. so 92 today. a.m. sunshine. p.m. clouds. we're looking out for the storms later today and a few could be strong. winds south to west here at about 5 to 1. then just kind of cloudy overnight and i think we'll wake up with a few clouds maybe the early shower tomorrow and then clearing gradually and there's the five day. check out the cool temperatures overnight lows back in the mid 60s here in town. low 50s north and west. and your daytime highs only low to mid-80s without a whole lot of humidity. so for a change we have a really nice pleasant couple of days here across the area as we get into the weekend. all right, that's a look at weather. sarah and tony back to the

desk. >> all right. thanks tucker. a man who'd en wanted in fairfax county for more than a decade is now back in the area. wesley thomasson was charged in 2010 with drugs with minors and filming himself for having sex with a minor. he was located in mexico and extradite today california on july 20th and then returned to fairfax county. detectives want to hear from anyone who might have potential information. prosecutors in the jerry sandusky case reportedly have a lot more of what they're calling highly incriminating evidence. it's material they never brought up during the child sex abuse trial. the statements come from triplets of meeting -- transcripts of meetings by lawyers but the evidence is not being released because of the ongoing criminal investigation and no word from prosecutors on who was being investigated. relatives of the shooting victims at virginia tech want

the presidential candidates to speak out about gun violence and what they will do to improve background checks. nearly 70 relatives of people killed or wounded atavism tech sent letters to -- at virginia tech sent letters to president obama and mitt romney. new this morning, a huge biker ride in our area. hundreds of bikers are honoring 9/11 victims and they are ridding in maryland and pennsylvania and virginia today. they are supposed to ride on parts of the interstate and it's the 11th annual ride to support emergency responders and honor the victims of the 9/11 attacks. if you drive in prince george's county, a reminder this morning to slow down. classes resume next week in the county and speed cam ares are posted -- cameras are posted around most schools. last year they generated nearly 350,000 tickets. along with slowing down near

schools aaa advises drivers to watch out for bicyclists and to eliminate distracts driving. the group also recommends that drivers watch out for children when they put their cars in reverse. you know we have all heard child care is expensive but now we're learning shocking new information about it for parents. a new report by the child care aware of america says most people pay more for infant care than they do for rent. wow. in fact, in 35 states parents will be more -- will pay more for day care than they will for in-state tuition and fees at a four year public college. that's crazy. that's just too much. i mean -- >> i don't know how everyone is supposed to afford all that. >> i don't know. all right. 9:36 now. too close for comfort. what happened when one fan got a little too close to lady gaga. that's next. >> plus, whitney's last movie hits the big screen today. how our movie reviewer kevin mccarthy rated the film. the buzz bin is coming up next,

we have -- you know we have this springtime we have every school group in america like i said. we have the bowling club, we have the red hat ladies, we have the -- the civic groups. we have -- company outings. we have everything from the -- you know the president of the corporation to the president of the garden club. i mean and everybody in- between. >> reporter: and of course the kennedy center of course loves "sheer madness" now and couldn't be happier with it. with that you have a new seat. >> our beautiful new set. and the family theater here which is our temporary home renovating the theater upstairs where we were ast 25 years. >> reporter: where you're going to be in the fall. >> going back in november. i think middle of november back up stairs to a brand new theater. >> going to be exciting and the other thing about brand new is when you talk about the show you are really good at putting current events in the show. how do you know what works? how have you found out what hasn't worked? example a current thing you

might put in. >> honestly i think we go a social media a lot these days, cease what's live on twitter or youtube videos anything from a. to z. quite frankly. how does it work or not? if you get a laugh you're doing something that's entertaining and there's the three, the three try rule in theory anyway. if it's still not working go back to basics and check out a new bit or see what else you might not do. >> reporter: like a favorite joke that's been added maybe? >> i'm always watching "tmz" now because it's like -- >> reporter: that's good on fox. >> exactly see? >> what'd you put? >> miley cyrus. >> different things of the celebrities who are making news but i love that side it keeps the show fresh and people know at it. >> reporter: it gets the young people laughing. i wish i had like a cake and champagne. only this silver app versery. at least the champagne right?

these are the people you want to have at the next dinner party. but before we go give me your favorite "sheer madness" moment or favorite thing about the show. >> i think my favorite things about the show are there is you never know what's going to happen and the things that fall out after the fact are the best moments in the world. >> you? >> we have -- last week, we had two marriage proposals here on stage. and we also had a wedding a couple of years ago somebody bought out the entire house. and invited their guests to watch show. we put them into the show and afterwards they sailed away on their sailboat which is named "sheer madness." >> too fun and for you? >> this -- the audience. you know there's one lady out here a few weeks ago and she was laughing so hard that it cracked us up on stage every single joke she just out there like ha ha ha! and it -- we couldn't stay focused and we love it. we love the audiences every

>> great for you. it has to just be like a whirlwind. >> it really is. it's so exciting and kind of like one of the surreal moment where you're like is it really me? i haven't had a chance to get excited really yet because i want to get working and get started but i'm absolutely happy about it. >> going to be leaving for l. a. on monday actually and getting ready to leave. you can't talk too much about that but we know you have a record deal. i mean just what it was like to be on the show. and working with jennifer nettles -- you know, of course known from the duo sugarland, what was that like to be working her and singing with her? >> it is actually amazing, she is sump a -- like down to earth person and so kind hearted and the way that she allowed know just be free and the way that we picked the music and picked the socks and the way she let me be you know just step out of the box. there was this one thing she

always says is you take big russian, and you get -- risks, and you get big rewards. we did grease and i was that free. that was amazing. >> we have to brag on you a little bit because you are a local boy. you went to school in laurel. we're very proud of you and the fact you will be moving ahead on this. but you've had quite the singing career. how did you really get started and how things have gotten to this point? >> i really started off when i was really young. i was about 3 but my mom says 4. she's older obviously mom i know. all right i was 4. so -- you know i started singing when i was 4 and everybody in my family says i was humming when i was crying and they kind of knew i was a singer. but them you know i just went on in high school and middle school and i was really shy and didn't do a lo of singing but i did some little bits and pieces here. but then i went into the military and i got a chance to.
