it's 71 officially at reagan. 67 at dulles. 70 at bwi thurgood marshall. here is a look at the area temperatures elsewhere. we have 75 degrees this hour at annapolis. 69 near fredricksburg. 66 culpeper and 69 degrees at dulles as i mentioned before. 64 at hagerstown. it's gradually warming up. it's sticky out there. it will be on the humid side. here is the satellite and radar coosite. we are getting closer as far as the weather -- wet weather is concerned. not a total washout. there will be more through the evening and a chance of a the skies for ater tonight. that. nothing will be heavy, heavy rainfall at all. high today will be 78 degrees. i don't remember night low 66 degrees. by about midday we will be close to the 80-degree mark. keep your umbrella handy and the wet weather will be

of the art tv studio. but school schedules and transportation throughout the county are changing as well. middle school students are getting 40 minutes added to the school day at the beginning or the end to give them extra concentrated instruction and it will allow the middle and high schools to consolidate schedules and share bus routes and save $5 million in the school system. the biggest thing there will be a brand-new superintendent. the current superintendent will be leaving at the end of the month to go to the philadelphia school system. he told me it's a bittersweet day but he is proud of what the system achieved while he has been here. >> taught us quite a bit. i think that we have really changed in some respect the perception of the system and we have seen student outcomes increase particularly over the last three years. we are excited about the progress. we have seen more students who

have access to more rigorous course standards. students are getting into college or going into the workforce and we think that has been a function of what we have been able to create together. with a group of committed parents and educators. >> the school board has selected alvin crawley from the d.c. public school system to come in and be the interim superintendent. his first day is september 4th and they begin the search for a full time superintendent shortly. back to you. >> thanks, melanie. new this morning, prince george county police are investigating a police-involved shooting. it happened late last night on bar that by lane. officers say the suspect became combative. he told an officer that he would kill him.

that's when an officer opened fire. the suspect is suffering from nonlife-threatening injuries. police say he was high on pcp. the capitol hill father brutally beaten over the weekend is in critical condition. thomas maslin was found unconscious in front of a house on north carolina avenue. the 29-year-old was walking home after spending the night out with friends at a baseball game. he was just blocks away from his house. >> he was the last person you would think this would happen to. it's heart-breaking. he is a young dad just like us breaking in on the hill and it's just devastating. >> he has undergone two surgeries on his skull to ease the swelling in his brain. police are trying to figure out where and why he was attacked. another american is shot and killed by an afghan police

officer. yesterday's shooting is the latest in a spring of insider or green on blue attacks in afghanistan. those are killings by forces who are cutting training from nato troops. pentagon chief leon panetta called afghan president over the weekend. martin dempsey is discussing the attacks with afghan commanders today. there could be a new an unusual tool to fight suicide among soldiers. the u.s. army awarded a $3 million grant to develop a nasal spray to a scientist who helped to discover a neurochemical that has antidepressant and antisuicidal effects but is not suitable for injection orlando rail use. they are designing a spray that will deliver appropriate doses of the drug to the brain over time. the fbi is reportedly investigating a late night swim in the sea of galilee that involves drinking and several

republican house members including one naked member of congress. political reports say it happened on a fact finding mission to the holy land last august. he admitted to jumping in the sea during the night out saying he did so regret i believe belly without a swimsuit. others swam with their clothes on and others with them off. eric cantor was so upset about the antics that he scolded the 30 house members that were on the trip the day after the swim. wisdom? i will take it. it's back to business on the campaign trail. after a week of solo appearances mitt romney will reunite with his running mate paul ryan. they will be in new hampshire to answer questions about the medicare plan that left some seniors a bit skittish. as for the president, he has a lunch date at the white house with vice president joe biden then he will sit for a series

of interviews. later tonight the president and first lady will host the winners of a campaign contest for dinner. a luncheon for 54 kids, winners of mrs. obama's healthy lunchtime challenge and their parents. they won by creating original recipes that are healthy and affordable. besides a white house tour, they will be treated to a performance by big time rush. on sunday morning talk shows, medicare was the big topic as the republican governor of virginia clashed with the democratic governor of maryland. >> i think governor romney's plan is for a country of less, where we cap what we do to protect the security of seniors. we give them a voucher and tell them good luck. you are on your own to cover whatever the difference is. the congressional budget estimated that this will lead to our nation spending anywhere from 5900 to 8,000 less per

senior. >> the medicare trust fund is going broke in 12 years and president obama is not only for the status quo but he wants more spending without reform. that is irrelevant responsible and reckless. every governor in the country is redefining pension systems because the numbers don't work. romney and ryan are honest in saying, look, we are not going the right direction. if you want money there for future generations you need reform. >> governor o'malley said romney's plan will cut health care spending for seniors. governor mcdonald responded by saying the medicare has no future without reform and the republican plan will give people a choice. this morning there is a big uproar over comments from a house member running for the senate. todd economy kin said in an -- akin said in an interview that women can prevent getting pregnant in what he called a

legitimate rape. >> reporter: the question from charles jaco is whether abortion should be legal in the case of rape. this was congressman todd akin's response. >> it seems to me, first of all, from what i understand from doctors, that is really rare. if it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to shut that whole thing down. let's assume that didn't work or something. i think there should be punishment but it ought to be in the rapist and not attacking the child. >> the senator mccaskill campaign released the following statement. it's beyond come present hen shown that someone can be so ignorant about the emotional and physical trauma brought on by rape. the yesterday that todd akin expressed about the serious crime of rape and impact on its victims are offensive. the akin comb pain countered. the congressman says he has deep empathy for the thousands of women raped and abused but that he misspoke. this is part of his statement.

i recognize that abortion and particularly in the case of rape is a very emotionally charged issue. i believe deeply apply in the -- deeply in the protection of all live and i do not believe harming another victim is the right action. >> we have months to go. i'm sure we can have a score card how many times somebody will say something and say gee i wish i said that a different way. >> reporter: joe cernik believes democrats will use the statement in a new rad and pro- life groups will rally behind him. a spokesperson for the mitt romney campaign said that romney and running mate paul ryan did not agree with akin's statement and that the candidates would not oppose abortion in instances of rape. statistics from a nih study done in the '90s show 5% of rape victims became pregnant. that was be more than 32,000 pregnancies a year. the research found about half the woman mine had an abortion.

controversy surrounding chick-fil-a rages on. protests are popping up all over the country since the president spoke out about same- sex marriage last month. the contract between the stew dent union and chick-fil-a has one year left on it. on mars curiosity recover zapped a rock with its laser and nasa released an image of what it looks like. it's a composite image of the first laser test by the chemistry and camera institutes. the laser will take its first test drive later this week. it hasn't moved from t landing site yet. a new discovery is raising privacy concerns. scientists found a way to predict future movements by creating an al go rhythm from the data from your cell phone. they compared one individual and the social network with places and frequency of visited areas in the past.

>> the book is -- what i have done is i started filming young people that come to my safe house, playing basketball or hanging out and a lot of them were in gangs. they would come to me, i'm trying to change lifestyle, i'm trying to get out of this trouble. i put them on tape and they tell me their life story. the next day or the same day, these people were being shot in the streets. i'ming there filming it then going to the hospitals, the mother crying over their child that is gone. >> that was documented in some of the films that you did. now, you were behind the camera, right, brother? >> i was the guy that gave him the first original camera so, i guess you could say i was behind the camera but mostly i was behind the effort that curtis was providing to the city. this is one man, an individual's attempt to get at

the problem, answering the calls of the youth, answering the calls of the parents, responding just by his heart, no funding, to just try to make a difference in his own way. it has had a strong impact in the community. >> often we see things go down -- a couple of years it was big, no snitching. don't snitch. you have gained the trust of some of these young people enough to actually go on camera. that is a huge leap from what most of us would expect a person perhaps in the life to do, to want to put their face on camera. that is amazing. i will ask both of you, how do you gain the trust and tell these stories in an effective way that you have? >> the trust comes -- they know i'm somebody that cares. when the shots go off at night i am there wrapping their legs up, calling 911 and they know that i'm living amongst the violence also.

when the shots ring out, i'm ducking too. they know i'm serious. that meets a lot. >> you have gotten big time support from some national figures and one of them is former nba player c. web. >> my man. >> and naus as well. >> we are looking at this video. what are we looking at right now. >> a guy, two of my friends gunned down. i was at work and both of them were shot in the leg. thank got both survived. this was an ongoing thing that was going on. but it's getting better now. it's changing for the better. >> dana, we were talking before, the documentaries started, this is like -- the

book is 20 years in the making and these were started back in the day when d.c. was known as the murder capital of the world. you say it is getting better. is there hope? >> i think this book, people take a look at this book, they will be able to go beyond the headlines, look into the personal lives how the mothers were affected, the family members were affected and to do an attitude adjustment on our part because a lot of times when these things happen, these kids are crying out for help. we are not hearing. by reading this book, maybe someone, maybe in the same situation, they can kind of find a -- change their attitudes how they approach the kids instead of dealing with a lot of stereotypes. >> you put a human face on this issue is what you are doing. you know, you used to be a police officer. i'm sure that things that you saw were horrendous. >> yes. >> do you feel like you are

changing people? do you dare have hope that your work will change the future generation in some way. >> when people come up to me, they say them videos saved me. it's powerful. it's real. so powerful that i know down the road, somebody wants to commit a crime, they will remember this tape i showed and, wow. i'm not going to do that. it definitely has an impact. >> that is one of the things that is unique about the book. these folks know things went wrong in their lives and they know the outcome will be good. they called him, curtis, i want you to come in. when this plays out i don't want to be a name and a number and a statistic. i want people to know i was a human. i had goals and aspirations. i got lost. use my life story as a lesson for my kids and the next generation. they call him and give him

having a dog that constantly barks or jumps on you or others can be a nuisance. what can be done? can fixed? we learn more from a behavioral and training expert. good morning. >> good morning, wisdom and allison. many dog owners relate to these problems, jumping and excessive barking. the good news is you can fix the behavior with consistent training and, michelle, you, the director of behavior and training at the washington animal rescue league joins me. who did you bring with you today. >> this is foxy roxy. a 7-month-old female pit shepherd mix. >> beautiful dog. >> in my arms we have precious. >> right. >> she is so precious. >> let's go into barking.

dogs bark. that's the way they communicate and get the message across. excessive barking can get annoying. what can you do to fix the behavior. >> barking is one of those issues, especially because we live in the city, one of those they need to get it fixed immediately. too often we get frustrated with the dogs and go quiet, be quiet. >> to the dog, sounds like you are supporting them. >> barking is one of those problems -- not a problem but symptom. the problem is usually bar dome or frustration. too easy fixes, increased exercise. whatever you are doing, add about 15 minutes a day and also increase mental stimulation. i brought some toys to share. there are tons of great toys out there now that you can get.

this is one of my favorites, just a hollow rubber toy. >> you say 15 minutes, that's not long but some people don't have 15 minutes. but something like this you can give to them and they stimulate themselves. >> if you get four or five of these, you can treat them, put them in the freezer and they are ready to go for the workweek. leave them one and you come home to a dog more tired. it's a little bit like the difference between leaving you at home with nothing to do or leaving you at home with your ipad and computer and your cell phone. >> all of a sudden, he at the end of day -- >> let's quickly move into jumping. this is something my dog is notorious for. >> jumping is the dog's way of being social and friendly and the dog saying i love you and want to meet you. foxy is a notorious jumper.
