7:32 am
a little more sunshine so the fog will be burned off before too long so it's not all bad but in the meantime here's a look at our current temperatures at the airport. 66 degrees at reagan national airport this hour. 60 at dulls and 61 degrees at thur good marshall. so starting out fairly mild. 63 at cull pepper. we have 60 at hagerstown. 61 degrees for martinsburg and we've got 64 degrees and 69 at annapolis. so not all bad. we're getting there. dense fog advisory in effect and this includes cull pepper where the visibility is less than a quarter of a mile. so do be careful if you're driving out there. just be aware of this. this is going to expire at 9:00 this morning. in the meantime we're on the back edge of some cloud cover. that's going to give us a few sunny breaks as we head through the course of the day, but we are still dealing with a slight
7:33 am
chance now before the day is over into this afternoon and tonight i'm seeing maybe just a popup spotty shower or even a thunderstorm is possible, but very spotty and isolated in nature. nothing that's just going to be dragging on or sticking around for the entire day or evening at all. so another upper level disturbance and this system to the south pushing its way off the coast. by tomorrow a little bit more sunshine for you. the skies will end up being a lot brighter. for today a high of 84 degrees, mostly sunny skies. once again chance of an afternoon or evening popup shower or thunderstorm is possible. same story for tonight at 66 degrees. look at how those temperatures are rising headed to the mid to upper 80s by the time we hit into the end of the week. let's check in now with traffic. >> all right. well, we've got delays right now if you are traveling along georgia avenue working our your way inbound. talking about the delays headed out from forest glen headed out

1999 during the internet boom. reasons for apple's stock market success, the impending launch of the iphone 5 and possibly a smaller and cheaper ipad. well, a company not celebrating this morning, facebook. for the first timeshares fell below $19. that happened yesterday. less than half the $38 a share price of its initial public offering or ipo. the stock did end up rebounding to the end of the day closing at just over $20 a share, but that number has many investors and insiders wondering about the company's future now. joining us now is someone closely monitoring this situation. dr. david cast at the robert h. smith school of business at the university of maryland. good morning. >> good morning. >> you know, facebook, that's something that everybody's plugged into whether you want to be or not t. it's just what's happening now and now the stocks though, not
7:36 am
necessarily reflecting that popularity. what's going on here? >> well, what happened here, there was, let's say excessive amounts of enthusiasm at the ipo three months ago. the initial offering price was at $38, and in fact, during the first hour or two when it initially traded it actually bumped up to 42, then 45, at which point it started coming down as it has steadily over the past three months. the problem there, again, these prices are determined by demand and supply and a lot of supply has come on the market at the ipo certainly there was some early investors who sold some of their shares, and since then, there's been perhaps more careful analysis for the outlook of the company. the valuation initially was excessively high, unrealisticly high in my opinion and even
7:37 am
today at today's price for example around $20 a share, with the shares having come down this much, the valuation based on a price earnings ratio still appears to be quite high. and roughly a price earnings ratio should be somewhat correlated with projected growth rates for the company's earnings per share for example. and right now based on looking forward one year, or estimated earnings, projected earnings for facebook it is still selling at 41 times projected earnings over the next year. by contrast google is currently selling at 20 times projected earnings, and apple and microsoft at 15 times earnings. so the market p even at this price is projecting a much high r growth rate than these other very successful companies. >> we did the story right before
7:38 am
we began our talk about apple and how it's the most successful. with apple though, you see the lines, people going to buy a physical product. when facebook a lot of people wondered well, how does facebook make all this money anyway? did that play into this? >> well, in part it certainly did. on july 26th, facebook released its second quarter earnings report, and it actually reported a loss for the quarter. its revenues were still growing but the growth rate is slowing down and it's costs are increasing. facebook derives its revenues -- 84% of its revenues are derived from advertising and the question being raised going to the future, what percentage of internet advertising can facebook attract. it does have 900 million monthly users, it's very popular, but what is the projected revenue
7:39 am
going forward? >> >> and does this have any reflection on the popularity of facebook itself? people logging on, checking out what their friends are doing that day, does that have any direct correlation with what we know as facebook? >> yes, i think users with facebook continue to be very happy with it. the one question that's being raised and should be raised is will there be competition for is in angoing forward? excellent situation, but looking out three to five years, will there be other sites that could effectively compete against facebook? and that's really an unknown. we don't know that. >> right. i guess my last question is, is there any take home message? so you didn't jump into the facebook ipo. is there a message going forward, any warning signs that investors could look at and perhaps stay away from if they're worried about the same thing happening? noo i would recommend a look at recent ipos for the company you're considering in your
7:40 am
industry or similar industries, what valuations were applied to those ipos, how did those ipos perform and look at the comparable valuation for the ipo you're about to invest in. >> in the mean time may i friend you on facebook? >> yes, you may. >> it's been a pleasure talking to you. well, coming up, just miles away an update from the straits of florida as diana closes in on a world record and the comedy world has lost a legend. as the word spreads of her death flowers were placed on her hollywood star of fame. a look back on her humor as her trademark next. wow,

7:45 am
humidity is at 84%. a light northerly wind is going to switch to the south before the day is over. and our neighborhood temperatures, what do we got here? 69 at annapolis. 59 at frederick. a little cooler there. 60 at hagerstown. fredericksburg at 64 degrees and we have 55 way to the west in cumberland. so sky conditions, well, we've got just a back edge of the clouds that are affecting us across the area right now, but also can't rule out the chance of a popup thunderstorm or shower. very, very low chance of that happening but i want to let you know. fog advisory in effect until 9:00 a.m. visibility in these areas less than a quarter of a mile. it does include cull pepper and counties to the west. so for today, by midday at least about 82 degrees. by the #35k hour we'll be at 83 and our daytime high today expected to be about 84 degrees or so. this is not correct. this is not what i wanted to

was being picked apart on specifically? i mean, obviously there was a stench there that -- but what were the big problems? >> one of the -- room one, the maxwell suite at the inn and it's a lovely property in vermont -- did have plumbing issues. the plum, actually didn't seal the toilet exhaust properly. so we never would check. we couldn't use that room for nine months but they asked us to check him into room one. >> oh, gosh. >> of course we wouldn't do that. but it's subsequently been fixed and rachael ray has stayed there and cloris leachman and when gordon comes back he is going to stay there. >> what was it like? what was he like to work with? was it pretty -- was he pretty vicious? i mean, on you? >> vicious is not maybe the right word. he is tough as nails. >> okay. >> and he gets right to the point and, you know, it is reality tv. so, you know, there's a lot that's dramatized and it's edited. remember, there are 200 hours of tape down to two 37 minute
8:48 am
segments. >> i want to show more of that. there is a part there where you kind of have an interaction if you will with gordon ramsey and he kind of pushes your buttons a little bit it seems like. let's watch it. >> excuse me. excuse me. >> go on, you pompous [ bleep ] >> excuse me! don't talk to me like that. >> what's wrong with it? i want to know what's wrong with it. >> don't speak to me like that. >> [ bleep ] start getting a little [ bleep ] real. you still haven't got it! now this place is sinking. start paying a little bit more attention to the guys on the ground, understand how hard it is out there, forget your [ bleep ] antique road show and start from the bottom running this business. >> now, you look pretty mad there. did he really kind of get to you and were you thinking he was a little bit over the top or did you know this was just part of the show? >> oh, no. you get it. you -- you become emotional. if you don't, you're not human. plus, we basically wanted -- i
8:49 am
mean, we were there to be fixed. so we knew there were issues and we wanted to get them fixed. but i don't like people, you know, swearing like that at me, constantly, you know. it was like being -- i now know what boot camp is like. they rip you down and build you up. >> i wanted to read a few things they mentioned. they were -- before they came in and ramsey came in they were saying besides the raw sewage smell, that they say he meets the inn's wealthy and arrogant owner robert dean ii. do you take a little bit of you know -- is that kind of stinging a little bit to hear that? >> yes. first of all, i'm not wealthy. [ laughter ] >> so that doesn't sting and i really hope i'm not arrogant. i'm proud of our property. i love our reasonable. we are proud of our employees. >> and you feel that everything has been fixed and it was good that he was there? >> oh, absolutely. i mean, you know, what they don't realize is yes, we were
8:50 am
slow in paying our employees as was brought out in the show and there was a lot of complaints about that, but, you know, we have had a lot of support and people saying well good for ari and robert who actually kept these people employed. we haven't taken a paycheck so, you know, it's -- you have to look behind the scenes too. >> robert dean owner of juniper hill in vermont we appreciate your coming in. you're really a good sport. i want to mention, too, you have some coffee from juniper hill. i don't know if we can get a shot of it. he redesigned your logo and everything, he did top to bottom everything on your inn. >> he really helped us a lot. this promotes the historic preservation trust at juniper hill and that's our new logo so we're pleased with that. >> thank you so much, robert. >> road trip. i would totally stay there. thanks for coming in. "totem" is the latest cirque du soleil production to hit our area. it's a cosmic mix of tribal costumes, high-tech set designs and a host of characters to make it fun for the whole family. holly is with us now to tell us more.
8:51 am
holly, are you really going to try some stuff? >> reporter: let's see. single ladies yesterday rings today, it's only tuesday. whoo. this is a tough workout. but it's a fun workweek and it's always a good impressive time when you're hanging out with people from cirque du soleil so when they're in town we like it go behind the scenes. francis jalbert is joining us. >> it's training area, where they do their makeup and 45 minutes to an hour depending on the complexity. >> is this what you did? how you warmed up this morning? >> no. [ laughter ] >> what people may not know is most of the people come from a sports background so they were competing in gymnastics before coming to cirque du soleil and then we train them how to become artists, so to dance, to sing to play with the crowds and to give emotion to the crowd and not just be perfect.
8:52 am
>> reporter: that's a whole different world or another level. >> it's a completely different mindset. you perform 10 times a week instead of 10 tips a year so it's different as the preparation that goes into sports. >> reporter: i'm glad you brought that up with 10 times a week versus 10 times a year. you have a full staff that takes care nd the artists in terms of massage and physical training and -- >> yes. we have 50 people that travel with them making sure they're in shape and to prevent injuries but you have a pilates coach and others that help them to maintain their quality of performance on stage. >> reporter: so are they in here every day? >> the [ indiscernible ] are here every day and the pilates come at different times during the week. >> reporter: are the athletes here every day? >> every day. so the cast of "totem" performs six days a week. >> reporter: why was it important to have acrobatics? >> this is based on circus.
8:53 am
it's 10 amazing acrobatic acts that come from traditional circus or the gymnastics tradition and you'll be blown away. >> reporter: i'm going to be blown away here in a second. >> we'll see. >> reporter: when ollie puts me into his act. this is ollie, ladies and gentlemen. when i say the show never looked so good... [ laughter ] >> reporter: look at this face. so ollie, i want to understand something. you were competing on -- for finland in the gymnastics. >> yes. >> reporter: and cirque came to you? >> yes, that's what happened. it was european championships twine-wright before the creation of "totem" started and they were look for one more guy on rings and i talked to one of the scouts by accident and that's what happened. >> reporter: you know what's different is we were talking about this, francis and i. when you compete in, you know, like the olympics or in men's gymnastics in general, the rings are stationary. they are not going anywhere. but here in cirque they are moving up, down, flying all around. how hard was that for you to make that transition? >> of course it's a hard thing like -- we had eight months of
8:54 am
"creation," we created the act, tried different things. for me it was most learning out of gymnastics for getting all the rigid moments of gymnastics and learning how to perform. >> reporter: did you get dizzy? >> a lot. >> reporter: i just want to make sure. okay. so what are we going to do? >> let's try it. a little sequence. had. >> reporter: this is going to help me hold on. not that i don't have huge upper body strength. >> it's for safety. >> reporter: right. >> so right hand and then turn. and we hold hands. couple of steps for spin... good. slow hang...
8:55 am
>> reporter: are you going to catch me as i stand up and try to stay standing up? i'll get my hand out of here later. fox 5 is our website. we have a link to "totem" cirque du soleil here at national harbor running through october 7. you heard francis say there are 10 shows a week, 3 on saturdays. next hour we have a full act in makeup, costume, we're going on stage. you will see it live right here. back to you. >> perfect! good job! >> that was impressive! >> what is going on? holly is in the cirque show now! >> thank you. the first lady's quest to get kids to eat healthy has always relied on a little star power and yesterday she got some help from reed alexander. >> still ahead in the next hour we'll sit down with the teen actor to talk about his
