check it out. this was the scene in new york city last night as 3,000 people all dressed in white descended on the lincoln center for performing arts. the crowd was there to
9:30 am
participate in a diner en blanc, dinner in white. a secret location was emailed to those registered for the event just before it started. they brought their own food, drinks and tables and chairs. [ laughter ] >> the dinner, which was free, they brought everything else. i guess so, was started by a group of friends in paris in 1988 and now takes place in a dozen cities worldwide. this looks like a scene out of a thriller "jaws." this fin doesn't belong to a shark. it's a blue whale turned on its side with a portion of its tail fluke slicing through the water. >> passengers on board a boat were whale watching off dana point in california when they made this unusual sizing. the whale swam next to the body on its side for an extended period of time. i don't care if it's a whale or

9:32 am
storm this afternoon or this evening. it is very possible. very slight chance but i just want to at least get it on your radar. a bit warmer today, as well. temperatures will be on the rise and temperatures will really be rising by the time we hit into next week so we'll have a look at that five-day forecast and show you that as well. right now, 69 degrees at reagan national. humidity at 81%. light north winds. winds shifting south into the course of the afternoon. it's 64 degrees at culpeper and manassas and gaithersburg. we have 72 at annapolis. 74 at quantico. 61 at frederick and 61 degrees at hagerstown this hour. we have a few clouds still hitting the area but we will see more sunshine today a very weak ridge of high pressure will be building in but the clouds will be sticking around a little bit. can't quite get rid of them. we have a disturbance to the north and another one to the south and a combination of those two are really setting us up for the clouds and also for the chance of seeing a spotty storm or two pop up. but this ridge of high pressure will build in gradually and into the course of tomorrow and the end of the week we will see
9:33 am
a lot more sunshine but each day there is still that slight chance that we could see a pop- up shower or storm in the forecast so just be aware of that. here's a look at what else is happening. we have some action in the tropics. tropical depression 9 is expected to become a tropical storm in the course of today and wednesday as it moves towards the lesser antilles. it's going to push south and eventually could even move its way a little closer towards the north. take a look. it comes to hurricane status as well. we are looking at sunday. will it move closer to florida? that's the big question as it gets itself closer to cuba just what direction is it going to take. so definitely this is something that bears watching. in the meantime for today mostly sunny, chance of a spotty storm or shower popping up. same thing for tonight, mostly cloudy at 66 degrees. and your five-day forecast showing you look at these temperatures on the rise. by the time we get to saturday,
9:34 am
we're at 88 degrees. not bad. plenty of sunshine here. can't rule out, once again, one of those pop-up storms happening but overall a good week ahead. wisdom? >> all right, gwen. let's talk sports. the nats kicked off a series with the second place braves. bottom of the 13th, tied at 4, suzuki hits one, no one is covering third allowing danny espinosa to get there easily. chad tracy comes up and hits a grounder to dan ugla who bobbled it. the nats win 5-4 and have a six- game lead over the braves. just drop it. it's an historic time for a golf club. yesterday augusta announced its first female members since opening 80 years ago. former secretary of state condoleezza rice and south carolina financier darla moore will be the first women in green jackets when the club
9:35 am
opens for its new season. for years, the club that hosts the mass officers tournament has come under fire for its all-male member -- that hosts the masters tournament has come under fire for its all- male member policy. a free clinic across the county for lacrosse. joining us is the founder and director of the pgwla athlete russell. good morning. >> good morning. >> i'm so glad could you join us. for those not familiar with lacrosse, can you tell us what sort of skills it it entails? >> lacrosse is a really fast- moving sport with about 11 to 12 girls on the field at one time. it's a game of finesse and has the same theme as basketball. if you can run and play basketball, you can play lacrosse.
9:36 am
>> you're looking to diversify the sport with lacrosse, aren't you? >> yes, yes, yes. i'm very involved. we are at elizabeth seton high school where i'm the head coach where i have been for three years and i decided to get this program under way as a way to give back to the community and get lacrosse up and rolling in prince george's county and give the kids of the county an opportunity to play this great game. >> you have been very busy this summer. can you tell us about some of the opportunities that you afforded the residents there in prince george's county? >> we did a summer demonstration all throughout the county. we went to various summer camps, church camps, any type of community event to explain the fundamentals game and then we would allow kids to try it out. so we would explain things such as cradling, ground balls, how to pick those up and we would let the kids try it out for themselves. we provided them with soft sticks and miniature goals where they were able to, you know, learn what we have been teaching them and, you know,
9:37 am
let them try it out for themselves. it was a lot of fun. a lot of kids recognized it but never had the opportunity to play and we were able to give them that opportunity. >> okay. so let's talk about the league a little bit. it's a nonprofit organization. so i know that probably means you could always use some help. >> yes. >> with donations, volunteers and all that. but let's talk about the main mission and how moving forward girls can get involved in the county. >> like i said, we're a girls lacrosse organization different than the boys lacrosse game. we only focus on girls lacrosse and we want to give them the opportunity to play, youth at the ages of 5 through 14 years old, and we basically want to have these clinics where they have the opportunity to learn and then in the springtime we want to be able to offer them teams to be play on like any other sport. in addition to that, we want to give workshops and seminars on healthy living so how people
9:38 am
can get healthy not just for the girls but also for their families. so there's a lot of different things that are going on. we also want to push college acceptance so we will have workshops and seminars for girls in our organization on how to get into college and what that takes so they can learn at an early age what they need to do now to get into college. >> lacrosse is a sport that can be played through college, as well. i think that's important for parents to hear if you know what i'm saying. >> yes. yes. yes. there definitely is scholarship opportunities for lacrosse. i played at the division one level at the university of delaware so there are programs all throughout the country and they are always looking for lacrosse players so if we can get these girls playing at a youth level and get them to continue all the way throughout high school there is the opportunity for scholarships. >> and exposed to something you might not have thought about. we are going to put up information about upcoming clinics and there are many more opportunities to get involved again for the viewer. or you can go to our website, myfoxdc.com and see all this
9:39 am
and write down where the clinics are going to be but let me just ask you, if something is watching and interested, what's the best way to get in touch with you? >> the best way is to go to our website, www.pgw la.org. they will learn more about the free lacrosse clinic the first clinic that we partnership with, september a at the sports and learning complex from 9 to 11 and 12 to 2 so we really want to get people out there and get them involved. they can email us at info@pgwla.org. >> or go to our website for those fantastic links. ashley, applaud you for the good work that you're doing in prince george's county. and good luck with the future clinics and the league itself. >> thank you. thank you so much for having me. we're excited to get lacrosse rolling in prince george's county. >> all righty. thanks for joining us this
9:40 am
morning. that's ashley russell, founder and director of the pgwla. >> the great jim brown football player, the legendary football player was a lacrosse player, as well. some say he was one of the greatest lacrosse players ever. >> i did know that. amazingly. somewhere. >> somewhere in there. a major health scare for a popular comedian. >> that's next in the buzz bin along with rumors that nick minaj may be joining "american idol" and who may not be on board, when we come back.
