[ laughter ] >> but you know what? i have some winning weather for everybody out there today. and i hope you're going to like it. let's take a look at the maps and put everything all together for you. we have temperatures right now that aren't too bad. 72 degrees officially at reagan national airport. 66 at dulles. and 67 at dwi thurgood marshall. the humidity is at 78%. we have a light northerly wind, winds going to the east by this

afternoon but a comfortable day for everybody. not much happening in the skies. we have a few clouds. a ridge of high pressure in control is going to hold us steady to the course of the weekend but today is another day like yesterday where i can't rule out the chance of a spotty pop-up shower or maybe even a rumble of thunder a little bit later on. so just be aware of that. it will be very isolated in nature and the chance is very slim. here's a look at isaac. this tropical storm is really giving forecasters a run for their money as we try to pinpoint whether or not it's going to affect the united states. i'll have the details updated on that storm system for you a little later and just what we can expect. but mostly sunny and spotty showers today in the forecast or a pop-up storm. our high today a comfortable 85 degrees and no shortage of sunshine for all those little ones heading back to school. back to you. some of the top stories we are following this morning, a maryland man faces charges of child abduction and second- degree assault after he

reported took his one-year- old son from a district heights home on monday. one-year-old cesar martinez has been found unharmed. we continue to follow a tragic story out of ellicott city maryland where two 19-year- old college students were killed after a freight train derailed early yesterday morning. now federal authorities are trying to figure out exactly what causedhe deadly wreck. fox 5's melanie alnwick has the latest on this ongoing investigation. >> reporter: allison and wisdom, it looks like the investigation is going to focus on the emergency braking system. it appears that a line snapped somewhere along the train which may have triggered the derailment and though we can't say for sure at this point, it is looking more and more like the death of those two young women on the bridge may have been a tragic coincidence. this morning we are getting a new look at the crash site courtesy of skyfox. the difficult work of removing the railcars continues. each car will need to be inspected before the nt can say exactly what went wrong.
9:03 am
the massive railcars went off the tracks and dumped piles of coal above the red and gold ellicott city sign. this is probably where those 19- year-old college students rose mayr and liz nass friends from high school in ellicott city were sitting. they had tweeted pictures before saying they were drinking on top of the sign. the pods were found on the bridge under a pile of coal and ntsb investigators say the train's crew didn't apply the emergency brake so they are trying to figure out how a brake line snapped and where. >> how they operate the trains, the grades of track, what the track maintenance, the locomotive maintenance, all the equipment. guys are look at every car involved in the derailment including the ones that didn't derail on in through the night. we'll look at track structure, bridges, everything there is to look at turn over every stone.
9:04 am
it's quite an expansive thorough investigation and takes a lot of time. >> the train does have an event data recorder and head-on video camera. that information is downloaded. investigators are now going through it to see if it can help them focus their efforts. we expect more information in about two hours. >> thanks. now, in a bizarre twist, a pretrial hearing for the alleged mastermind. 9/11 athe accident has been pose -- mastermind of the 9/11 attacks has been postponed because of the derailment. they were supposed to have a hearing today at the u.s. navy base at guantanomo bay. but when the train crashed, verizon said some fiberoptic lines that provide communications to the remote navy base were knocked out. as a result, lawyers in cuba didn't have internet connection. the service has since been restored and the hearing is expected to take place tomorrow. a former university of virginia lacrosse player

email threat against president obama. anton caluori was arrested in a seattle suburb meeting them at the door with a shotgun. two officers took control of the weapon and removed another gun they say was in caluori's ankle holster. the secret service won't say what was in the email but a spokesman says it was a threat to kill the president. new polls are out in the race for president and they show the race is a tight one. >> there are two new polls both showing the race for the white house is a deadlock. sarah simmons has more on the polls. >> reporter: one of the polls is a little closer than the other but the race for the white house is still a statistical dead heat. the latest strategy from president obama trying once again to win over young voters. he was in columbus, ohio hitting homicide on hitting mitt romney on

education. >> he doesn't think your education is a good investment. i do. that's what's at stake in this election. that's the choice in november. >> reporter: by just about all accounts, that choice in november should be a nail- biter. a new "associated press" poll shows the rates well within the margin of error with the president just one point up. a new nbc news poll shows a wider spread of four points but again within the margin of error. both polls include the addition of paul ryan to the romney ticket and ryan was on the attack yesterday in pennsylvania. >> you built this business! [ applause and cheers ] >> the government didn't build it for you! it's your business, your achievement! [ applause and cheers ] >> reporter: the romney campaign did have to deal with a big distraction. missouri congressman todd akin, whose controversial abortion comments have his fellow republicans urging him to abandon his senate race something he refuses to do. in a statement, romney himself said, akin should get out. but akin says everyone is overreacting. >> i haven't done anything that was morally or ethically wrong, as sometimes people in politics

do. we do a lot of talking and to get a word in the wrong place, you know, that's not a good thing to do or to hurt anybody that way but it does seem like a little bit of an overreaction. >> reporter: mitt romney is now preparing for tampa where the republican convention is days away. and republicans are keeping a close eye on this on the weather. tropical storm isaac as it begins to bear down on florida. you can see this is a tropical satellite image behind us. they are going to keep a close eye on that. gwen has been talking about that. still early but we'll keep an eye on it. >> thank you. the democratic national convention will take place next month and georgetown university student sandra fluke will be among the speakers. she was thrown not spotlight when rush limbaugh called her a slut for supporting contraception insurance coverage. strategists say fluke will try to solidify president obama's support among women. one of the hottest races is
9:09 am
the one for virginia senate. democratic candidate tim kaine is out with his 30-second spot a positive time as governor of virginia. we spoke with him this morning and he says he takes issue with his republican opponent george allen for running negative ads. he also says republicans aren't doing anything about the looming defense cuts that could hurt our economy. >> congress is still drawing a paycheck and they need to find a solution to avoid defense cuts. i put a solution on the table. if we let the bush tax cuts expire at year end for people making more than $500,000 a year, that will create about $500 billion in revenue over the next 10 years and we can use that to then dramatically soften any of these cuts to defense and other core priorities. >> he also says george allen wants to make the bush tax cuts permanent but that would widen the deficit and we reached out
9:10 am
to the allen campaign. he wasn't able to appear with us this morning but we plan to have him on sometime in the future. the justice department has cleared the way for virginia's new voteer id law. under the law, every registered voter will receive a voter i.d. card. it also expands the option for other items you can bring instead like a social security card, driver's license, government id or a photo i.d. from your job. but now voters can also use a utility bill, paycheck, bank statement, a government check or a current virginia college id. >> voters are discouraged, i think that will change weather the actual id that they -- will change when the actual id that they need to vote will be coming in the mail to them of the they have all the information they need. we'll have all the information they can check and go to the polls on election day and vote. >> if you don't bring any of those forms of identification you can't vote without taking extra steps afterwards to prove w you are. you can no longer just provide

a signature to prove it's you. 350 million miles away, far out there, the "curiosity" rover on mars is about to take its first test drive. >> and to get ready for it, the rove is wiggling its wheels. it sent images of its rear wheel moving back and forth and it must have taken some time to do it. if you looks closely you can see the sun's shadow. later will park where it landed. >> kind of cool. >> yeah. very interesting. it's always interesting when we start getting pictures and all those things, the rover starts moving, fascinating stuff, love all the science fiction that's going on. fascinating. >> i like the history, you like the future. >> oh, yeah. the cities with the fattest paychecks, we can agree on that, find out which towns in our area make the cut. >> now, have you ever shopped at home? you may want to consider it. a financial author joins me after the break with tips on

bethesda maryland came in at number one on cnn's money's list of top earning towns. greenwich, connecticut, and palo alto, california, round out the top 3. also, in our area ashburn, virginia, comes in at number 6. and two other cities almost make the top 10. arlington 11th and ellicott city in 12th place. wherever wisdom lives, that's number 5. >> i was going to say allison, i think your home area may be on that list. [ laughter ] >> then you thought again. okay. [ laughter ] >> thank you, allison. now, most americans aren't like allison, bringing home that big paycheck, that big fat paycheck and back-to-school shopping can hit you hard in the wallet. fortunately, there are some secrets to squeeze more out of your dollar as you work the aisles at local stores. here to tell us more about that is financial author jennifer street. thank you for talking with us. >> thanks for having me.
9:17 am
>> so school in some cases. >> it's not too late for the big sales. once the kids start school, you see what the classes are going to need. right now in august, late july, just guesstimating but once you get in there and get started, then you really know what's needed. >> and you also say you should look at home before you go out. >> start at home first. if you have pencils, pen, booming bags, calculators -- book bags, calculators, anything good last year is still good now. start there first. >> we have a list of tips. stick to your list. explain that. >> stick to your list. there are so many cute and trendy things, once you get in the store, you're going to be inundated with all these colors and oh, this makes this noise and oh, this is -- you know, we can do this with this. make sure you stick to the list first so you get what they need
9:18 am
and that's where you want to put your dollars, what they need. >> when you're walking up and down these aisles in these stores, is there some kind of strategy there? >> i think what you should be doing is looking for the lowest price. if you can get 10 pencils for a penny, you should be looking for that kind of deal. go to the dollar store next. start at home, then the dollar store and then the grocery store. >> again, you just said it. last one on there, shop at several stores. get your list together, out what you need and then go to several different stores and find the best deal. >> find the best price. you don't have to be wedded to one store. if you have to stop around for the best deal, do that because you want to save money. >> now, a lot of people shop based on, all right, well, i'm in the store, i don't want the hassle. so i'm just going to get this. instead of shopping around, that's probably not a good idea. >> it's not at all and it drives your price up. the national research council came out with an estimate that the average family will spend $668. >> that's a lot of money. >> on school supplies.
9:19 am
not clothes, school supplies. that's a lot of money. so yes, it is worth it to drive around to get the best deal. get the grocery store circulars. see what's coming in the mail and see where the best deal is and go after it. >> now, as summertime deems or the end of the season deals are great, is it possible that you can start even before the summertime deals come out or should you wait like maybe in the -- at the end of the school year in may or in june or july or something like that? if you find a good deal, take it. nothing says that you have to start back-to-school shopping end of july, early august. if you find a great deal, take it. even with clothing, there are going to be stores that have sales on short-sleed shirts, blouses, things that you know your kids are going to use and need so go ahead and do that. sometimes trying to group everything all in at one time shoots the price up. >> so a lot of planning. so is there any strategy as far as budgeting for this well in advance? >> yeah. have a budget. go in and say, i'm not going to spend $600. we're not going to buy all
9:20 am
these trendy things. this i my budget. stick to it. >> any other advice for parents getting ready? >> keep your head down, keep your plan together. nothing trendy unless they keep the trapper keeper back, my favorite. >> stick to the game plan, have a list, stick to it shop around. thank you very much for coming in and talking with us. we appreciate it. >> thank you so much. >> allison, back to you. thank you. pay by card. ahead, a big face-lift for d.c. cabs. plus, imagine rummaging through your attic and finding a piece of history. an interview with dr. martin luther king, jr. and what he said is straight ahead. first, though, let's check back in with holly speaking of history and uncovering some. hey. >> reporter: on a similar note, we are indeed digging up the past ourselve this morning. we are live at josiah henson

[ laughter ] >> that's fair. >> that's fair for mrs. martin. good stuff. gwen here with us now. the forecast dare i say a winner? maybe not quite a million dollars. >> well, depends how you look
9:32 am
at it. i like to think it's a million- dollar forecast, you know? a little bit of a bias i think. we have a pretty nice forecast for today. maybe half a million. 73 degrees now at reagan national airport. humidity at 73%. light northerly wind this hour at 3 miles an hour. and you know what, the winds shift from the east through today but overall a nice day outside. temperatures right now 71 at baltimore, 78 degrees at annapolis. it's warmed up there. 70 at fredericksburg, the same at dulles and frederick. 67 degrees for hagerstown. and as we look at the west we have 64 degrees for winchester and 65 for martinsburg. we have this weak ridge of high pressure that's in control. not a lot of clouds to worry about today. mostly sunny skies. but once again, like yesterday, i have been saying this all morning because i really want to let you know, i can't rule out the slight chance of a pop- up shower or an isolated storm a little later on. we had one last evening. so there is a slight possibility that we could see that once again in some of our neighborhoods so just be aware.
9:33 am
and we have a system that's pushing its way off the coast. we have another system to the north of us. combination of all that just setting us up for that slight chance. that ridge of high pressure is going to hold steady through the weekend. so that's going to bring us plenty of sunshine right now through until sunday. so we are going to do very well. let's look at the tropics and see what's going on with tropical storm isaac moving west now at 20 miles an hour maximum sustained winds at 45. expected to strengthen and become a hurricane over the next 48 hours. once it moves across cuba and heads more to the north, is it going to impact florida? three to five days out is too early to confirm whether it will but it does bear watching. this is the cone of uncertainty that you can see here. as we expand it out it continues to go over florida. so this cone is what we really have to keep an eye on. we have put together some models which are a combination of different computer models sort of to get their reading and take on it and a lot of them are kind of coming
9:34 am
together with it moving over at least the southern portion of florida and then one kind of moving a little more to the northeast. so we'll have to really stay on top of this to see what this storm is going to do. here at home, mostly sunny, chance of showers or storms, heating to 85 today. overnight low, 65 degrees. once again with a light east wind. here's a look at your five-day forecast for you. we're talking about those temperatures rising starting from tomorrow through to the end of the week. we are heading to the upper 80s. 89 by saturday and 88 on sunday with plenty of sunshine. i can't think of a better way for a weekend to start and a weekend to end. back to allison and to wisdom. >> thank you. this morning, we just couldn't resist introducing you to nelly. she is one adorable sea otter request the brains to go along with the cuteness. she stacks plastic cups while floating on her back. then she returns them to the

>> definitely looks like it. >> well, he was in vegas partying and he was at a suite and i guess it looks like they were playing some pool, sans clothes, strip poker going on maybe. you know, just a lot of different "fun" things going on in the hotel room. >> we talked about it earlier wisdom and i out here. isn't someone minding the young prince? like doesn't he have a chaperone that says, you might not want to do that? >> not your best idea. one would think. but apparently he was left out on his own to his own devices and this is what happens. he is a fun one, though. he is a prince and knows how to have a good time. >> clearly playing pool and ending up naked in a room with some females. okay. >> we should say this is tmz's exclusive pictures too that we're looking at. goodness only knows what these other -- i heard this was a bare hug. if anybody is wondering at home what this picture is on your website. a bare hug with a female there,

9:42 am
there's a lot of people, they are still throwing names out there. at this time randy, they are not sure if he is going to be a judge or mentor so they are still trying to figure that out, as well. >> let me ask you about that. what are we to read between the lines and understand here? would this be something that he would want to do? i can't imagine it would be at the same pay scale as being a judge. >> i actually agree with you. i think that, you know, it's one of those things that i think they are trying to figure out but i think being a judge say bigger part of the show so depending what role he wants to end up taking in the end and what role idol wants him in. >> thanks for joining us. >> thank you. moving on to -- we're still talking about clothing. how much is too much? up next, nike's new sneaker is break the bank. but is it worth it? we are going to have gwen and sarah join us after the break with a look at some of the stories that people are talking about today.

is revisiting the -- >> a little young. >> the school board is revisiting the issue so where do you draw the line? >> i think that's where you draw the line. i find that highly ridiculous. it's not like they are associated with some sort of gang. >> but it is blue. here's the deal. >> it's a dark blue. >> he is only 5. >> it doesn't matter. the schools have these rules in place for a reason and you can't start flexing the in and out of the rules oh, well this is an exception because this or that. >> are you kidding me? >> stick to the rules. the rules are in place. leave the rules alone. just change your shirt. it's not a big deal. move on. >> how many things are blue though? i don't understand how we're doing this. >> the reason that they picked it -- what is it, oklahoma? well, it's oklahoma within the state. [ indiscernible ] >> it's oklahoma and oklahoma state. oklahoma state is orange. >> but oklahoma school. >> oklahoma schools -- >> that kid may not be from there.
9:48 am
let him wear it. >> you know what? >> you're wrong on this. >> overboard. give me a break. what if the kid wore a blue shirt with a donald duck on it? >> the donald duck disney gang or something. >> come on. >> i find it -- there are so many other issues that we're faced with. >> if they're worried about it, go to uniforms. >> i agree with you on that! go with uniforms and be done with it. >> i just got done with school shopping. please! go to school uniforms. >> i lose that one to the ladies. how much is too much? we are talking about these nike shoes. these are the lebron james 10. initially when they said they were coming out they were going to be $315. that's absurd. then you have the president of the nafta urban league which mark more yoel this is ridiculous.
9:49 am
nike should get a conscience and do this. you know who is going to line up, young people who can't afford them are going to line up, create all this havoc and drama over some basketball shoes!! > wisdom. >> what. check out the feature. >> there's a sensor in the shoe. >> who cares!! all right. this is ridiculous. i'm going to get on my soapbox like yesterday. this is ridiculous. $300 for a pair of shoes? even if it's 180, because sarah you said you read some article -- >> i was reading something that a nike spokesman said hold on they're only 180. oh, i'm sorry. only 180. >> that's still a lot. >> absurd! the target audience, what's those expensive shoes the ladies wear? >> lubelouboutins. >> you ladies work so you're the target audience. when they make these $300 shoes, i'm not saying -- >> i think i do. >> i'm talking about you ladies. but when they make these $300
9:50 am
shoes i'm not the target audience. the target audience is young jobless kids who just want to play basketball. this is absurd. nike should get an conscience and stop doing this. >> they were upset they were coming out around school time. >> yeah. >> so the pressure is on the parents. >> some parents can't say no and just do this silliness. it's ridiculous. >> in the past we have done stories where people have been assaulted for only people stealing the shoes. it's a dangerous situation. peer pressure. it's not good. it will be $60 in a couple of years. >> isn't there a collector group out there a block of people that just buy them? >> they line up overnight and get these shoes and put them on ebay and sell them to collectors for more money
9:51 am
because they are rare and nike will make only a certain amount a pair and sell them. and once they stop selling them, they are gone and they will bring them out in a couple of years. it's just one big game. >> i think nike should put the money in scholarships for young people. >> ding, ding, ding. like that one. >> so there you have it. we're out of time. >> enough said. >> wisdom and the ladies again. enough said. that's our take on this whole thing. so now we're going to talk about more news. ongoing research at a site formerly known as "uncle tom's cabin" will soon be the topic of a national television program. >> the latest discoveries have also provided a unique learning opportunity for what could be the next generation of scientists and archeologists. isn't that fabulous. fox 5's holly morris is at the site in bethesda and joins us live once again. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. it was 2006 when maryland county park and planning commission started excavating this site. so they have been working it for some time. we're at josiah henson special
9:52 am
park. but it was the pbs show time team america that targeted this site a few weeks ago. they picked four national sites, and this was one of them. it's going to be featured in an episode coming up in the next year. they bring the team on location and have the latest technology in he remembers of it archeology but they also need a little help from young people in our area and they were up to the task. they are part of the field school. alexandra jones joins us as well as young budding archeologists. good morning. >> good morning. >> reporter: so tell me about the field school. >> what the field school is, a 4.5 day program where the students come out, they have all signed registrations forms, they learn about archeology, then learn about all the sciences that are incorporated with archeology and then get to participate and conduct hands- on activities for the full week. >> sea,' week.
9:53 am
>> reporter: we should have video of the upcoming video. >> what happened was we come into the area. we notify local schools, youth organizations, that we have this great camp coming. to participate they register. we accept everybody that registers and then you just show up on the first day and basically learn about archeology, participate in excavations, go on field trips, they conduct various activities with scientists and by the time it's done, i think we have a great group of budding scientists. >> reporter: i apologize for us not having the video from the show but can you tell me about the time when the casting crew were here? >> they come in for three days. during that time we bring in geophysical survey equipment, we bring in magnetometer equipment, things which the site normally wouldn't have access to. and for the next three days, we just full on take over the site with the assistance of the head
9:54 am
pi and just conduct archaeological excavations, hopefully trying though advance what the site wouldn't have known without all this science. >> reporter: very cool. looks like we have some of the show stuff now. so i want to talk to some of the kids. tell me your name and tell me about being a part of the show. is it what you expected or how -- tell me something about it? >> my name is leah. and it's definitely a lot more than i expected. i thought we were going to be doing a lot of just digging and excavating but the fact that we had a lot of hands on experience and a lot of experts and a lot of time to kind of go in depth with a lot of different parts of archeology not necessarily just the excavating. >> reporter: how long did you spend in makeup? [ laughter ] >> reporter: it's okay. you don't have to tell me that side of the story. but the other thing about archeology in general is time team america they come in for three days working against the clock. archeology kind of takes patience and takes time and so our -- tell me your name. you're in it for the long haul.
9:55 am
>> yeah. >> reporter: expound on that. [ laughter ] >> i basically came here to explore my options because i might pursue a science career. so it was a really good experience. >> reporter: i know we should also have video of you working in the field. was there anything -- did they give you any kind of direction? did they make it fun? your name? >> alana. one of things we did that i wasn't expecting we were do was experimental archeology. so we learned how to make fire the way the settlers and indians made it. at the same time we learned to throw spears. >> cool. so it was an educational experience for you, too. so for you what's it mean -- tell me your name and what it means to be working on this specific site. >> my name is jackie and we usually just met up at the mansion and just visited here but it was cool because we got to see how all the archeologists do when they're
9:56 am
excavating using ground- penetrating radar to know where all the artifacts are. there were a lot of interesting facts and a lot of field stuff we got to visit. >> reporter: i want to make sure i get my last person in. >> i'm anna. >> reporter: is this what you're going to be when you grow up? >> it's definitely something i'm going to think about now. it was a great experience and opened up some doors. >> reporter: very cool. thank you all for coming out this morning and sharing your point of view. the time team america show airs sometime in 2013. we have a link to their website. go to our website, myfoxdc.com for more. thank you. it's time to change the way we clean. it's time to free ourselves from the smell and harshness of bleach. had about the ones we love. new lysol power & free has more cleaning power than bleach. how? the secret is hydrogen peroxide. it attacks tough stains
