have gotten 2" of rain so if you are heading out be aware and watch yourself on the roads. as we look we are talking about temperatures into the 90s today once again, currently it is 78 degrees right now at reagan national airport. we have 80 already at annapolis. 76 degrees at bwi thurgood marshall, 74 to the south in fredericksburg. so a hot, sticky day today. i can't rule out showers or isolated thunderstorms popping up throughout the course of the morning because that system is actually continuing to push that wet weather a little more to the east but we'll stay on top of it for you. we'll have details for your weekend forecast a little later. back to you. a former president gives quite the seal of approval to the current president. bill clinton, president clinton, gave a fiery speech to the democratic delegates at the convention last night in his support of president barack

obama. as fox's doug luzader reports from charlotte, president obama will accept the renomination tonight with a little change in plans. >> reporter: there has been some last-minute drama here but last night former president bill clinton largely stuck to his script and made the case for president obama. one convention, two presidents. president obama came on stage to thank former president clinton for what amounted to a full-throated endorsement. [ applause and cheers ] >> i proudly nominate him to be the standard-bearer of the democratic party. [ applause and cheers ] >> reporter: he would hold the stage here for nearly an hour, well over his allotted time. but he fired up the crowd and he answered a question that has vexed democrats in recent day: are we better off now than we were four years ago? >> we were losing 750,000 jobs a month. are we doing better than that today? >> yes! >> the answer is yes. >> reporter: in the end, the clinton speech was exactly what the obama campaign wanted, but not everything here has gone by

the script. >> all those delegates opposed say no. >> no!! >> in the opinion of the -- let me did that again. >> reporter: for starters the party had to make an awkward revision to its platform which had omitted references to god and jerusalem a big issue for supporters of israel. and another complication, workers had to start dismantling the enormous stage at bank of america stadium. the planned venue for president obama's speech tonight was nixed officially because of threatening weather. but a party official admitted to having difficulties finding enough people to fill the seats. it means that president obama will be back on this smaller stage tonight to accept the democratic nomination. and this 20,000-seat arena will be much easier to fill and they will probably have to turn some people away. in charlotte, doug luzader, fox news. thanks, doug. and fox 5 will broadcast president obama's acceptance speech tonight beginning 10:00. then stay tuned for fox 5 ns

dnc and reaction. we'll also stream the president's speech on myfoxdc.com. meanwhile, it looks like mrs. obama has bragging rights over mitt romney's wife ann. the nielsen company says 4 million more people watched the first lady's convention speech than watched mrs. romney. the social media presence at both the democratic and republican conventions is soaring compared to previous years. in 2008, twitter reported a total of 360,000 tweets. this year, twitter is almost at 9 million tweets for the two party conventions and is expected to pass 10 million by the time the democrats wrap up their convention tonight. checking some of the morning's other top stories for you now, a 12-year-old boy from port washington has entered an alford plea to involuntary manslaughter in the beating case of a 2-year-old girl, a foster child living with his

family. in return, prosecutors dropped the more serious charges of second-degree murder. the boy's plea was not an admission of guilt but, rather, an acknowledgement that prosecutors had enough evidence to win the case in court. that little girl was found unresponsive in herfoster family's home. d.c. police are investigating whether an attack on capitol hill is connected to a similar crime that left a man in a coma. casey adams says two men jumped him while he was talking on his cell phone late tuesday night. the 26-year-old just moved to our area for an internship on the hill. he has several cuts on his face and swollen lip. this comes less than three weeks after tc maslin was beaten and robbed of his phone. both crimes happened on north carolina avenue near eastern market on the hill. >> just said that after they had knocked me down and got my phone from me, that they left me there, you know, on the street just -- i mean, i was unconscious for maybe a few

moments. but after the two gentlemen left, they hopped into the back of a car and they sped away. >> d.c. police released surveillance video last week that shows people in a 2005 hyundai sonata using the first victim's credit card near the crime scene. we have some breaking news this morning from baltimore. former ravens owner art modell has died. he passed away early this morning after a brief hospital stay at johns hopkins. modell bought the cleveland browns in 1961 and moved the team to baltimore in 1996. that move made him a hero in charm city but it made him hated back in cleveland. maryland governor martin o'malley issued a statement that says in part, quote, art brought the game and spirit of football back to baltimore. he helped reinvigorate baltimoreans' sense of pride in their team and their city. art modell was 87 years old.

checking headlines now and beginning overseas, two american soldiers died in afghanistan yesterday when their army scout helicopter crashed in the eastern part of the nation. also the afghan defense ministry fired hundreds of afghan soldiers in an investigation into insider attacks against nato trainers following a rash of green on blue killings. afghanistan is reevaluating soldiers to stop the attacks. hurricane isaac's aftermath is posing big problems for fishermen. some waterways are clogged with debris which has blocked the oxygen to fish killing them off. another problem is oil. bp says waves from the storm exposed deposits of buried tar, tar balls, on the louisiana coast left over from the massive spill two years ago. there is some good news this morning though to report. some dogs left homeless from isaac in mississippi will find new homes here in the district. nine abandoned dogs in that

state are set to arrive at the washington animal rescue league today. for the first time since 2006, a person in colorado has contracted the bubonic plague. the victim, a 7-year-old girl who is now recovering. when sierra jane downing started feeling sick after a family camping trip, her parents thought she had the flu but once sierra had a seizure, they knew there was something seriously wrong. she was returned to the hospital where medical workers struggled to figure out what was wrong. >> it's rare to see a 10 fever. and i remember speaking to the e.r. physician asking him three times, 107? he said yes, 107. documented 107? he said yes, 107. >> it was the core temperature. >> so it was impressively high and indicated that, you know, she needed prompt treatment and evaluation. >> the doctors eventually realized it was the plague based on sierra's symptoms, a history of where she had been and an online journal's article

about a teenager with similar symptoms. the bubonic plague is transmitted to humans by infected flea bites. she thinks her daughter may have been exposed to the disease by an insect found near a dead squirrel she wanted to bury. a huge spike in cases of the west nile virus. the cdc released new numbers wednesday and said there was a 25% jump from just last week some 1500 cases up to nearly 2,000. the number of deaths from the virus also jumped up 32% from 66 to 87%. the good news is that no new cases were reported in d.c., maryland or virginia. an 83-year-old fairfax county woman is in the hospital after being attacked by what appears to be a rabid beaver. this happened on tuesday at lake barcroft in the bailey crossroads area. a friend noticed the beaver that didn't seem right and made a beeline for the woman,

lillian paterson, swimming about 200 yards away. now peterson tried to beat off the beaver with her metal walking stick. the friend rescued her by hitting the beaver with a canoe paddle. the animal was euthanized to be tested for rabies. a maryland congressman can adhere row to his resume' after saving a 2-year-old boy's life. andy harris says he was driving on route 50 last month when he spotted three cars on the side of the road. he pulled over and said he saw a toddler who was not breathing on the pavement there. anesthesiologist by trade, harris was able to resuscitate that little boy. the boy's grandfather is grateful for harris' courageous act. he posted on the congressman's facebook page saying in part, quote, thank you andy from the bottom of our hearts for stopping in a storm and helping our family." a little good news for you, wonderful. >> yup.

check now on fox 5 morning now, d.c. councilman marion barry has been vocal on at which time they are week at the democratic national convention. th former mayor has been urging greater action on statehood and voting rights in congress accusing the dnc of marginalizing the d.c. delegation and said it was wrong that delegate eleanor holmes norton was not giving a speaking role at the convention. barry tweeted this link to a picture here showing the view of the d.c. delegates what they

have of the main stage at the dnc. buzz feed.com reports that several states which will likely go for mitt romney in november have better views at the arena in charlotte. so that's his perspective at the d.c. delegation to the states there. >> that's interesting. all right. it's not just democrats gathering in charlotte. virginia governor bob mcdonnell is among dozens of republicans offering counter arguments at the nearby nascar hall of fame and joins us live from charlotte. good morning, governor. how's it feel down there? you're in enemy territory. >> hi, tony. [ laughter ] >> i got a little friendly reception last week in tampa but it's nice to be down here. democracy is about the marketplace of ideas and the democrats have their show this week and having us for a few minutes to give counter points is healthy for everybody. >> let's start the process. let's talk about it. republicans have been saying for weeks now that president obama can't run on his record.

now, what seems interesting to me so far at the democratic national convention is, we are in fact seeing a defense of his record mostly by bill clinton last night. do you think republicans have to change their strategy? >> ha, no, not at all. listen, bill clinton is a good team player and gives a great speech. but you know what speeches don't create jobs. good policies do. and we're going it hear a great speech i'm sure from president obama tonight that will make people feel good, until tomorrow morning when they get the jobs report and we find out that for 43 months in a row, the unemployment rate has been at 8% or more and 23 million people don't have jobs or are underemployed. that's the bottom line at this point is rhetoric, we have a surplus of rhetoric in washington what we need is results and strong leadership. gas prices doubled as we heard on monday. and tuesday, we hit $16 trillion in national debt.

that's unstainable and immoral! $200,000 plus for an american family of four. at the end of the day rhetoric doesn't matter. there will be a little bump from the conventions and then the middle class voters wants to know who will get it done and they will pick mitt romney who has a plan. >> with the whole better off theme that romney and ryan are talking about, let's talk about what president clinton said and talking about the jobs number. he pointed out that the -- this administration has been adding jobs recently not enough but has been adding jobs and according to president clinton, he said since 1961, far more jobs have been created under democratic presidents than republican presidents. he cites 42 million to 24 million. what's your response to that? >> that may very well be accurate and most of those were probably created in the 90s 90s when bill clinton was president working with a republican congress because bill clinton tacked to the center. he worked together with them, welfare reform, balanced budget, job creation, that was

what they did working together. that's not what you got with this president. no matter how you slice the numbers, 23 million people don't have work. and i tell you, the worst effect has been on minorities, on the poor, and on college graduates. these are the coalitions that got president obama elected in 2008. the message hasn't worked for them. they are very discouraged, even the top official in virginia senator mark warner said just yesterday that he doesn't see nearly the enthusiasm in virginia. he doesn't see the same amount of signs. and that's why obama's gone from 8 up to now even in virginia. i see a lot more enthusiasm for republicans because you know what they see? they see mitt romney having solutions. when he was governor of massachusetts, the unemployment rate and the deficits went down and the surpluses went up. just the opposite of what you got with this president. so at the end of the day, tony, results matter. the talk and the speeches and rhetoric are nice for a short period of time but people are hurting and they want solutions and mitt romney has a record

and an ideas-driven campaign to get there. >> governor, i want to ask you for a quick answer if possible. i know you go the a letter from officials from 38 different counties and cities across the state about transportation issues in virginia saying more needs to be done. >> weavewe have more to do. we have $4 billion in bonds and other things a couple of years ago. i had a plan this year to get $300 million past the house rejected in the senate. i'll be back at it again. i grew up in fairfax county as you know and we have to do more to keep that great economic engine in northern virginia aive look right now. we have the hot links projects on 95 and the beltway. more needs to be done. >> governor coming to us from charlotte, north carolina, thank you. >> thanks, tony. nice to talk to him get that perspective. >> it is. well, are your sleep habits a warning sign of dementia? we'll tell you what a new study

breaking news out of philadelphia. here's what you are looking at on your screen. you're looking live at philadelphia international airport. the bomb squad is on board that u.s. airways plane that you see there in the middle of the screen. fox in philadelphia is reporting that authorities acted on a anonymous tip about a suspicious man on board. the flight left philly at 8:00 this morning heading for dallas when it was turned around after take-off. all the passengers are off the plane. we'll continue to follow it throughout the hour and let you know what's going on there but again, that's a live shot of the airport in philadelphia where they are checking out the u.s. airways jet. we have a health alert for you this morning. ' new study says trouble

sleeping could be signs of alzheimer's disease. researchers in the uk found a type of brain plaque commonly found in alzheimer's patients showed up in mice around the same time the mice started having trouble sleeping. the hope is that this will eventually lead to earlier detection of alzheimer's disease in human beings. this morning, hundreds of people in d.c. have a new sense of how healthy they are. more than 800 people were given free physicals yesterday thanks to a visit from dr. oz and dozens of medical volunteers from the howard university college of medicine. participants were screened for blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, weight and waist size. dr. oz's team found the state of health in d.c. is not all that good. more than half of those tested have high blood pressure. two-thirds were overweight or obese. only 20% were at normal weight. the national average is 33%. and more young people in d.c. are smokers compared with the other cities where dr. oz

so this isn't making it any easier. a few strikes of lightning there, but not as much as it was earlier. so we are going to watch this closely. we are talking about the rain moving its way to the east already you can see some just heading towards the district. expect it to continue into the morning hours. but hopefully, clearing out by the afternoon. so let's go to our weather maps then and take a look at where we have this warning in effect right here spotsylvania, stafford county. this is where we are under this warning and also that includes the city of fredericksburg until 11:15. it's a warm start to your day. 73 degrees at max, same at gaithersburg, 73 at manassas. 79 at reagan national airport. 76 at baltimore and 76 at dulles. we are going to continue to see warm conditions across the region just about everywhere. this is the same map so we'll continue with that. this is actually going up the mid-atlantic, that's what it is. 68 at boston, cooler, and 73 for new york city. so we have a frontal system that's causing issues across the area that will continue to do so into tomorrow. we'll see a lot more sunshine

in our forecast. but the next frontal system will be the weathermaker into the weekend. we are talking some showers and some storms. in the meantime, for today, 90 degrees. we are still talking about the isolated storms that are popping up and the showers but partly sunny by the afternoon hours. hopefully that sun will make a return. storms for your saturday and sunday and then we clear out. back to you, allison and tony. all right. last week, students at -- [ coughing ] >> pardon me. choked up. it's my alma mater. last week students at american university critiqued the republican national convention as mitt romney was nominated. today they were following the dnc in charlotte. wisdom martin joins us from american university with this morning's campaign u2012. wisdom, make you feel old being there with though students or not? >> reporter: allison and tony, i'm not used to being in a classroom at this advanced age. i remember it fondly though.

let's focus on campaign u with the students of american university and the classroom of professor lenny steinhorn. he is about to give the students -- this is our second week here. we are going to be here every thursday getting reaction from what's happening in the political world and in the race for the white house. he is going to give the instructions to the class about what they are going to be discussing today and then we are going to hear from some of the students about what they thought about what's going on right now politically, the dnc, the republican national convention. professor steinhorn will talk and then we'll hit it. >> so convention. democratic convention. we're living through it right now. this seems to be a convention different from denver in 2008. they are not talking about dreams. they're talking about determination. they're not talking about promise. they're talking about patience. they're not talking about hope. they're talking about history. and that history is how we got into this mess and that it takes time and patience to get out of it. if that's part of the frame that they are trying to create, are they accomplishing their

goals and how did that marquis performance by the "explainer in chief" bill clinton, did it help reach those goals for the democratic party? >> reporter: that's professor lenny steinhorn asking you guys the questions. so we are going to ask you some questions. who thought the speech from bill clinton was good last night? let's start right here. we'll go easy right here. you thought the speech was good last night. tell me why. >> well, at first i thought bill clinton was going to talk to an empty love seat. >> clearly a reference to clint eastwood. >> yes. >> bill clinton fashion it was long. but he was very good highlighting obama's accomplishments which is definitely what he needed someone to clearly communicate what he has done. >> and do you think it worked? >> i do. i think the most important thing that clinton had to do was to reinforce the idea that neither clinton nor any of his predecessors could have possibly fixed the economy in four years and he made that perfectly clear. he was articulate and charismatic. >> who didn't like the speech last night? did anybody not like the bill clinton speech last night?

right here behind me. we're staying on this side of the room. this is the talkative side of the room. why didn't you like what he had it say? >> i felt a bit distracted by him constantly -- he was connecting to the democratic party and putting a lot of blame on the republican party and saying how the republican party was not connected as a party. i just felt very distracted by that after most points he made went back to that statement. >> okay. >> reporter: so we're almost out of time so we're going to ask one question for the whole class. compare the two. who thinks that the republicans are doing -- had done a great job with their convention by a show of hands? who liked the republican convention from what you saw? all right. who thinks that the dnc is great and they are doing a better job or you like what you see there? >> reporter: so it's fairly even for as far as the political landscape in this classroom. anybody else see anything that stood out for them at the dnc since that's what we're on

good morning to you. >> good morning. >> reporter: you know, i always think it's funny when they talk about kind of like updating your makeup because shouldn't you really kind of just stick with the colors that work for you? >> yes. but don't be afraid to play up some color especially lips. tonight we are going to be degree a lipstick bar which i know typically she says usually does a nude lip but i'm going to put a little bit of color on her. we are going to keep the eyes pretty calm and just kind of make the brows a little bit more bolder so we're really emphasizing our lips tonight. also, we are going to be doing a kind of day-to-night look too. some people are afraid of color but you don't need to be afraid to color. >> reporter: at nighttime the color is lower so more color is better. >> exactly. >> reporter: so go ahead and work on her and as you're doing that, you know, you said you're playing up the lips. >> yes. >> reporter: so is it always good to pick one feature? >> there are no rules. do whatever you want with your makeup. >> reporter: but if you don't

do it right, we'll make fun of you. [ laughter ] >> reporter: go ahead and work and talk at the same time. >> what i'm going to do is start off with a primer. it's essential. it makes the makeup last with the foundation, blush, everything from kind of -- it is a radiance primer. all this is really doing, we're going to give her a nice little glow. it's very quick and simple. i usually put it on people right before i do their foundation and before i do their eyes to let it set. while that's setting i come back and do eyes. i always do eyes before i do my foundation because just in case anything falls anything you cannot easily put it up. >> reporter: i always do my foundation first. >> do your eyes first but let your primer set. so brows, she has stunning brows already. so we are just really going to pencil them in a little bit, give them a little bit more definition. >> reporter: as do you that aren't you guys also doing brow
