between president obama's white house and hillary clinton's state department. while the administration's ambassador to the united nations first blamed the attack on a spontaneous protest and discounted the idea that terrorists had killed u.s. ambassador chris stevens, it's not clear what, if anything, she was basing that on. last night, the state department said it was not them according to one official, that was not our conclusion. this as congress gets ready for what could be explosive hearings today. when the state department's career bureaucracy takes on a leftist democratic administration and tries to separate itself from a liberal white house, you know the white house has got a big problem. >> reporter: the white house denies there was a coverup but, beyond that, there will be more questions about security at the u.s. compound with new documents showing well over 200 security-related incidents in the 14 months prior to the

attack. congress will ask whether the state department ignored signs that could have prevented stevens' death. >> reporter: some democrats are already discounting today's hearings saying they are politically motivated. back to you, allison. >> thanks, sarah. the taliban is claiming responsibility for the shooting of a 14-year-old girl. the teen activist is mulailah mufei. she was shot twice. the unknown gunman asked for her by name and shot her in the head and neck. she is still alive but doctors say that the next few days are critical. she is an advocate for girls education which the taliban opposes. the supreme court takes up a big case today that could have an impact on college campuses nationwide. the justice will hear argument over a university of texas program that uses race as a factor in a quarter of its incoming classes. opponents say that the school

is practicing illegal discrimination by considering race at all. the case could produce new limits on affirmative action at universities or roll it back entirely. on the campaign trail, the president and mitt romney hit ohio. the president rallied students at ohio university and mitt romney plans to spend the next few days in the key battle state as well. new jersey governor chris christie joined him. no republican won the white house without taking ohio. vice president joe biden and republican paul ryan will work to boost numbers at the postand city of danville, kentucky, are hoping for a boost as well. stores are stocking up on

maryland health officials say three more cases of fungal meningitis have been reported in the state bringing the total there to eight. the c.d.c. says nearly 120 people are reported sick across ten states including 11 deaths, but there are reports of a possible 12th death in florida. some lawmakers are calling for stricter regulation of specialty pharmacies like the one in massachusetts that made

week. >> yeah. it's 4h national youth science day. this morning, students from our area are getting a glimpse into the future of science engineering and math. >> holly joins us live in chevy chase with more. all the studies point to this field being so lucrative, still, even with all the economic downturn and all that. what a great field to be for young people. >> reporter: that's a great field because there is a lot of demand. we come way short when it comes to people in science and technology in this country. the truth is that there are a lot of problems. you are looking at the brilliant minds that might come up with those answers and they are getting that bug by being here today as part of the 4h nationalout science. the concept is simple. if we get a million new
