west. dulles at 54 degrees. bwi marshall 55. forecast for today, after early sunshine, clouds move in. breezy and mild. high temperature about 71. winds gusting out of the south at about 15 ahead of the front. more details on the forecast and a look at the weekend, looks good. that is coming up in a few minutes. back to you. tucker, thanks. new this morning, tragedy inside a home in the district. a man was found on fire inside a house on newton place northwest. that was around 3:30 this morning. he was taken to the hospital, but later died. investigators are looking at the role an oxygen tank may have played in that fire. a person was killed early this morning as they walked along route one in alexandria. this happened before 2:00 a.m. in the northbound lanes of route one near huntington avenue, south of the beltway. an investigation lasted several hours, but all lanes of route one are open at this time. new from the middle east today, suspected u.s. drone air strikes have killed at least seven al-qaida militants in yemen. that's according to security

officials there. the militants had apparently gathered at a farm in the southern part of the country. officials say the air strikes came after tips from local residents that an al-qaida attack on the town was imminent. federal agents disrupt a terror plot against the federal reserve building in new york city. >> this as the war on terror is playing a larger role in the race to the white house. fox5's melanie alnwick has details. >> quazi nafis had his first court appearance yesterday. he entered the united states on a student visa in january, allegedly to study cyber security. prosecutors say his true intent was to launch a terror attack on american soil. we're learning more about his plot and connections. but the resurgence of al-qaida appears to be having an impact on the campaign trail. >> reporter: another terror linked crime scene, this time the federal reserve building in new york city, just blocks away

from ground zero in manhattan. the accused plotter, 21-year- old quazi nafis who allegedly claimed to have al-qaida connections. the fbi said he thought he was going to detonate a van full of explosives. they were fake, provided by an undercover agent. it comes as al-qaida may be strengthening overseas, especially in north africa, a shift that may be changing the way president obama campaigns. here he was a week ago. >> and today, al-qaida is on the run. >> reporter: but yesterday, that changed. in two speeches, he has now dropped his usual line that al- qaida is on the run. >> i said we focus on the terrorists who attacked us on 9/11, and we have and bin laden is dead. >> reporter: the change comes as both candidates prepare for their last debate next week, where the focus will be on foreign policy. mitt romney hoping to chip away at an issue that most polls show favors the president. >> i look at what's happening throughout the middle east, and

pakistan and i look around north africa, and north malawi taken by an al-qaida affiliate and the world continues to be dangerous. >> this as the campaigns continue to argue about the terror attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi last month and what role al-qaida may have played. you can bet both issues will be coming up in the next debate. >> let me ask you a quick question, , what do we know about the suspect? any clues as to his motivation? >> obviously prosecutors are still trying to figure that out. london sky news talked with his family yesterday, his father is the vice president of a bank in bangladesh. his sister is a doctor. the family says they are stunned. they describe him as a devout and prayerful muslim. the prosecutors say he was influenced by anwar al-awlaki and wanted to become a martyr

for al-qaida. at this time they don't say quazi nafis had training or actual direction from the terrorist group. >> thank you. in the president race, republican mitt romney is only planning two public events ahead of monday's final debate. the remainder of his time will be devoted to preparing for the debate. last night he rallied voters in leesburg and got a round of applause. the president will speak tonight at the alfred e. murray dinner in new york city tonight. we are also learning where the president will be on electi campaign sources are saying he'll be at the mccormick place convention center in chicago. no reasons were given especially, but they say it makes sense from a security

point of view. the final debate for virginia senate seat is tonight. former democratic governor tim kaine will face off against former republican governor george allen. they debated twice already. this last debate is scheduled for 7:00 tonight on the campus of virginia tech in blacksburg. reminder that we have a new show debuting as election day approaches. fox5 news edge you decide 2012 will focus on both local and national candidates and issues during the final two weeks of campaign. it starts monday night at 6:30 right here on fox 5. weekly unemployment numbers are often talked about on the campaign trail. they likely will be again today. new applications for jobless benefits jumped last week to 388,000. that was a sharp increase from the week before when they had fallen to their lowest level in four years. however, the labor department says the highs and lows are due

in depart to processing claims in california. a lineman 19 years old getting a lot of credit after spotting a house fire in up marlboro. he rushed into the burning house several times and things got heated up after they learned a child was sleeping upstairs. audrey barnes has the story. >> reporter: a pepco crew upgrading electricity to a home under construction in upper marlboro spotted a fast moving fire inside. 19-year-old lineman ryan calahan rushed into help. >> the flame started back up and started burning the whole cabin. i walked back in, put my hood over my head, walked back in and put the fire out again. >> reporter: the homeowner, who was walking her 7 and 9-year- old children to the bus stop, ran back and let the crew know her 3-year-old was sleeping upstairs. she sprinted into the home with calahan behind her. >> she went out the top story. i guess there was no smoke up there. she went out the top story, her and her son were fine.

>> reporter: the fire fueled by propane refused to be extinguished until calahan and the crew stepped in to turn everything off. the homeowner is thankful the crew was there, and her family wasn't hurt. >> they are heros and god sent them at the right time. i don't know what would have happened, because my husband just went out, and i was by myself and the kids. >> reporter: the reluctant hero says the child's mother is a hero, too. >> i think the mother is the hero, running in the house, not knowing what was going on. she got her son. i have to give it to her. >> reporter: audrey barnes, fox 5 news. >> quite a story. the jury in the trial of two prince george's county police officers charged with beating a university of maryland student could begin deliberating tomorrow. the beating happened in 2010 during wild celebrations after the terps beat duke in a basketball game. yesterday the judge threw out first degree charges against the officers, baker and harrison are still facing charges of second degree assault and misconduct in

office. george zimmerman is set to stand trial beginning next june. the former neighborhood watchman is accused of killing unarmed teenager trayvon martin in february. he is charged with second degree murder. his wife has been charged with perjury. she's accused of lying about the family's finances during her husband's first bond hearing. zimmerman has pleaded not guilty, claiming self-defense. disturbing new statistics from the u.s. bureau of justice. violent crime rates are up across the country for the first time in almost 20 years. the 18% rise last year is due to a large increase in the number of assaults. nearly 4 million people were assaulted last year. sexual assaults, property crimes and thefts were also up. violent crime had fallen by 65% since 1993. coming up, a popular weekly publication is turning its focus to the internet now. when "newsweek" will publish its last print copy ahead.

we have a health alert. four more people have died from the fungal meningitis outbreak, bringing the nationwide death toll to 19. nearly 250 people have been sickened, included a mayor in new hampshire who says he received the steroid shot for back pain in september. the steroids have been linked to a new england pharmacy that is under federal investigation. there could be a breakthrough in the fight against pancreatic cancer. researchers at the university of minnesota developed a drug to treat the disease they've been working on a treatment for

30 years. doctors say the experimental drug was successful on laboratory mice, but it is still very much in the preliminary development phase. pancreatic cancer kills 30,000 people every year. if you're feeling sleepy and need a pick me up, try a cat nap. a new study shows you may be able to think more clearly after a nap, even if it's for a few minutes. doctors think the brain does what they call important housekeeping during a resting state. several teachers are out of a job this morning after children wandered away from a day care center in bethesda. >> fox 5's karen gray houston caught up with some of the parents who say this could have had a tragic ending. >> reporter: it was about 4:45 monday afternoon. parents are picking up their children at the bethesda day care center, when wendy arrived, she was shocked. >> got out of my car, turned around and literally saw my son

and three other little kids across the street and coming up the block with a perfect stranger. >> reporter: she was with her 7- year-old son when she saw 2- year-old sammy out with a man walking his dog. >> i heard this man yelling outside, you've lost your kids. >> reporter: she wonders how did they get away from a fenced in play ground area? how long were they gone? >> managed to walk all the way up the block, hang a left, across the parking lot, down the street. >> they might have been run over by a car. or they might have just been lost. >> reporter: she yanked sammy out of the day care. other parents weren't so quick to act. >> it's a very good facility. the teachers are very loving. the curriculum, there's a nice balance of play and structured activity. >> reporter: even though most of the parents we talked to said they were comfortable leaving their children at the day care center, some parents said they were frightened by

just how far those toddlers had wandered away. >> because there are busy streets around here. it was worse than i thought it was. i didn't realize they had crossed a street. >> reporter: the day care center is part of a chain run by the montgomery county child care which released a statement. >> reporter: the statement says the teachers involved were fired, parents have been notified and the incident was reported to the appropriate oversight agencies. in bethesda, karen gray houston, fox 5 news. the average debt for new college graduates is up again. a new report shows two-thirds of the national college class of 2001 finished school with loan debt. students who borrowed money owe an average of $26,600, that's up 5% from the previous class. other recent figures show

student debt has surpassed $1 trillion. big changes announced this morning for a long time weekly news magazine. "newsweek" will end its print publication after 80 years and become an online only format starting in early 2013. job cuts are expected. "newsweek"'s last u.s. print edition will be its december 31st issue. the online publication will be called "newsweek" global and will be a single world wide edition that requires a paid subscription. in an hour, over 1 million people expected to take part in an earthquake preparation drill. the great shakeout begins at 10:18 this morning. it's encouraging people to know all of the safety measures when an earthquake hits. experts say it's important to drop, take cover, and hold on. the drill is taking place in five states and in the district. still ahead, a promotional shoot for a rafting company takes a wrong turn. video you do not want to miss.

american airlines is hiring 1500 flight attendants over the next year. the recruitment process will start in november. the first new hired class is set to begin training in january 2013. remember, the airline recently

picture we have. >> i'd like to see the red and orange hues. >> it was beautiful, he'your black and white security photo. the clock ticking for the candidates. less than three weeks out from the election. >> two debates down, one to go. wisdom martin joins us live from american university with a look at what happened in the last debate and what needs to happen in the next one. >> reporter: good morning to you. we are here with professor lenny steinhart, talking the campaign trail and the race to the white house. one more debate to go. let's talk about the most recent debate. your reaction to what happened. your opinion, winners and losers. >> we're continuing to see reverberations from the first debate. mitt romney is ahead in the national polls. obama has the lead in some. but he's closing the edge in some key battleground states. the question is, did the vice

presidential debate have any influence and did the second presidential debate have influence? the conventional wisdom seems to be the president won the second debate by a small m, but more important than the margin is that a couple of mitt romney's answers seem to be dominating the news, and one of those is about women and the binder issue and the other is about libya. i think it would be great to find out what my students are thinkings. >> reporter: let's talk to some of the young voters. most of them this will be the first presidential election they voted in. you had to watch the debate, because it's part of class. what did you think? >> i thought the debate was really interesting. definitely a lot more energy than the last debate. got a little aggressive at times, but that was good. i think obama was really able to capitalize on what he missed from the first debate. he kept in competitive. romney did well, too.

>> reporter: what did you think? >> i think obama stepped it up. i'm not sure it's enough to sway voters who liked romney in the first debate. >> i think president obama came out firing and it was important for him because he came off lazy in the first debate. mitt romney held his own. i like how he took a strong stance on national gases and coal. >> reporter: you've made up your mine who you're going to vote for, anything happen in the debates that changed your minds? >> no. >> reporter: all right. anybody in the classroom, did it, anything change your mind so far, anything said or done in any of these debates, has it changed your mind? everybody is solid. there are a lot of indents out -- independents out there. how big of a deal are the

independents? doesn't seem to be a lot of independents. but what do i know? i'm just the reporter. >> i think in the classroom represents what is going on in the country. a lot of people have made up their minds. i don't think the debates will significantly change them. where it will move some of them, those who are unsure, but felt far more comfortable after the first debate moving to mitt romney. had an impact because of enthusiasm level. republicans got enthusiastic for mitt romney after the first election. we'll see if the second one boosts the enthusiasm of the democrats. >> reporter: what can we expect in the next debate? what can we expect to see in the third debate? >> it's going to be about foreign policy. this probably is going to be president obama's strength, one of his strengths. and mitt romney is not an experienced man on foreign policy. he made a few fumbles when he

was overseas this summer. however, the president is vulnerable on a couple of issues. iran will come up. libya will come up. middle east peace is going to come up. china will come up. we'll have to see how he handlings those criticisms. but also whether mitt romney shows a command of those issues. >> reporter: about 30 seconds left. what do you expect to see, or what do you hope to see in the next debate? your minds are made up, but what are you hoping to see? >> on foreign policy, i definitely want to see more specifics on libya and what we're doing to calm down the middle east. >> i think some people have been saying obama hit his stride, and will be interesting to see if he can be stronger in the third debate. >> i want to see how mitt romney will answer questions to foreign policy, because it's a perceived weakness of his, and a perceived strength of president obama. i'll be interested to see how president obama will handle that. >> reporter: there you have it, from the students and professor here at campaign u. we're streaming live now on

would ban all abortions and contraception seemed a bit extreme. so i looked into it. turns out, romney doesn't oppose contraception at all. in fact, he thinks abortion should be an option in cases of rape, incest, or to save a mother's life. this issue's important to me, but i'm more concerned about the debt our children will be left with. i voted for president obama last time, but we just can't afford four more years. up. the first picture you see to the left has the orchid in full bloom, then it's gone out of bloom. she wants to know is her orchid okay. from the picture it absolutely is. it's got a big brand-new leaf coming out. she's got it placed in a window sill, which means it's getting good light and looks like it's getting proper moisture. i have these two live orchids i wanted to show the viewers, because the thing about these guys is these are one of the easiest orchids to grow. basically bright light, moisture at least once a week, let it dry out just a bit between watering. and what will happen, this orchid here has been in bloom now almost a year. >> wow. >> what has been done, is every time the blooms have faded, i've cut it back, and it sent

out less blooms, but still blooms nonetheless. this is how you would probably get it when you first get it home. what you want to do is after all of these blooms fade, you want to cut it right, right above that node and that's where the new blooms will come out. so they're really easy to grow. the other thing is, if they want to send up new blooms, you'll get them in the window sill. when the night temperatures get cool, it helps it bloom. >> some things say ice. is that okay? >> it's a new thing and kind of a fool proof way to get moisture on it. the best way is to have the water sit a couple of days so the chlorine leeches out of it and water it. in it sits in the tray, the moisture can rot the roots. >> second question now. >> this was a write in. it was a really good write-in from bob and barbara, who say

they watch us all the time. they had a question about lilacs. they bought a reblooming lilac. what they wanted to know was why their lilac was not grown and they have an older lilac that also has not grown. lilacs are really, really easy to grow. they can grow in any soil. they can grow in almost any ph between 6 and 7, which is a normal ph. the big thing you don't want to do with your lilacs is have them in wet soil. want them at the top of a hill or very well drained soil. their letter said they were watering a lot during dry seasons. >> cut back on the water. >> they don't need that. >> that's good to know. >> sounds like they're doing everything well and the lilacs should come along. basically, they can google a number of web sites on lilac care and they're easy to grow. >> okay. this last question was on

twitter from ann quinn. >> she's asking about cool season veggies. cool season veggies, our area is so temprate now. i'll prune all this big tall stuff back so i get the fresher oregano. this stuff i'll dry, and your chives, your rosemary, all of this can stay outside and you can put it unagainst the house so it's a little bit warm, or if we get a snow storm it doesn't get too covered. i'll harvest from this all winter. the other thing with greens, you've got bok choy here, lettuces, these green mix are actually available now. you can plant them, the soil is warming up, and at least for the next month you can harvest baby greens for a fresh salad. and basil. basil is something that if you have it in a pot like this, you can bring it in, put it in a

follow mickey. >> really is. >> reporter: i think you're up for the challenge. you have a really cool story. you didn't start out figure skating. >> i did not. i'm a canadian, so i played hockey. until a couple of years ago, i got it in my head i could skate for disney on ice. and i put on an audition tape. >> reporter: how hard was it to make the transition? >> difficult. but worth it. it makes all the hard work i put into it worth it. >> reporter: you go from wearing hockey gear to wearing these crazy costumes. tell us what it's like to play to an arena filled with kids. >> i was a performer in high school, went through a dramatic arts program. to be in front of an audience this size every day and every show, it's amazing. we come together as a group and put together such a performance and we put out our energy into the venue every week and to have the audience take that in

and send it back to us, it's an amazing experience. >> reporter: i always ask when i'm with some of the performers from disney on ice, when you say the name disney, there's a bar that is really high. a level of excellence that has to be attained. do you like that or is that a little intimidating? >> it can be intimidating at times. but it's something to strive for. we have world class skaters on the show. it's amazing to see what they can do. it's inoperational for me -- inspirational for me. >> reporter: your favorite part of this show? >> every moment i'm on the ice in front of an audience is amazing to me. >> reporter: this is his second show. so we're talking to a veteran here. without further adieu, let's hand the ice over to our rock stars and let it go! >> disney on ice presents, rockin' ever after!
