9:00 am
is here with where the candidates stand. chances are your kids probably drink them more than you want them to. one maryland family says an energy drink killed their daughter. melanie alnwick joins us with a look at how common it is. plus, the response from the fda. >> later this hour, few schools consider cheerleading a sport. a new report says that needs to change. good morning. i'm tony perkins. >> i'm allison seymour. tucker barnes is in the weather center, on your way there you stepped outside to see what it was like? >> a beautiful start to the day. you can feel it will warm up quickly. indeed, by later this afternoon, high temperature near 80. so, tony, i give you permission to get out and enjoy the afternoon, sneak out early from
9:01 am
work. we start with the satellite picture, clouds and showers to the north. you can see those in central pennsylvania. they are getting close. we are not thinking we will get showers in the immediate washington area. off to the north and west, out to hagerstown and southern pennsylvania, you mean see showers for you. for the rest of us, just cloud cover. not as much sunshine as yesterday. we expect you to be on the warm side. temperature at reagan national, 58. 53 dulles. bwi marshall 56 degrees. forecast highs later this afternoon on the warm side for this time of year. upper 70s to about 80. 79 in the city. 78 quantico. 77 the afternoon high out at manassas and dulles. nice looking forecast. more details on the weather coming up. we have a new tropical storm. i will show you that at 9:30 allison. back to you. last night's presidential
9:02 am
debate was the last one. for the next two weeks the candidates will hit the campaign trail to energize their base. both president obama and governor romney brought up the economy but most of the night was devoted to foreign policy including iran and other hot spots. >> you look at the record of the last four years and say is iran closer to a bomb, yes. is the middle east in few molt -- tumolt, yes. >> as long as i am president of the united states iran will not get a nuclear weapon. i made that clear when i came in office. we organized the strongest coalition and the strongest sanctions against iran in history. >> today president obama campaigns in florida and ohio, two key states. mitt romney is in nevada and colorado tonight te key states. election day is two weeks away with the race still wide open. joining us now with a look at
9:03 am
how each presidential camp is planning its camp to victory is leonard steinhorn. thanks for coming in. >> thanks for having me. >> we are getting down to the wire. we can focus on the numbers as the campaigns are doing. they each have different scenarios for how they get to the number 270 for electoral votes. let me ask you this. i have a feeling that we won't know who the next president is election night. what do you think. >> i'm with you on that. prepare the pot of coffee and stay up late. this could go any which way. there are predictions that have barack obama winning significant electoral college and others are moving mitt romney and that he may get more than 270. my guess it will be close to the 27 omar begin and we will
9:04 am
be wondering which state it low pressure i want to show you the current electoral map which shows the blue states are those that we know are for obama. the red states for romney. it shows 201 electoral votes for obama. 146 undecided. you have something slightly different. >> if president obama does not win michigan and pennsylvania, it will be very, very long night for the democrats. if you add those two in, you end up with 237 to 206, all right. because then you add north carolina to mitt romney. that's where it begins to get tight. those are the states after that 237-206 number that both sides are beginning to pour money into and compete over. so, for example, you look at the state of ohio. everyone is talking about ohio.
9:05 am
mitt romney needs ohio to win. in all likelihood if the president wins ohio then he probably can pull this off because nevada seems to be increasingly more in his column. >> this is scenario number one, the president winning ohio. we have him winning wisconsin, pennsylvania, nevada. in this he wins 272, romney 266. that takes michigan out. i think it's trending to obama. the romney people aren't putting money into it nor are they putting money into pennsylvania right now. >> interesting. >> so you add michigan in, obama wins a clear victory. that also brings up the issue of ohio. everybody is talking about ohio. it's red now. this is scenario number 2. the president loses ohio, pennsylvania and florida >> florida has been trending to mitt romney. people think that will be -- it
9:06 am
will be tight but likely romney. in that map you have north carolina going blue, it's probably going to go red. if you flip north carolina out of that, it gets closer. >> our scenario gives it to governor romney. scenario number 3, the romney campaign is not spending money in pennsylvania, this one shows the republicans losing pennsylvania but he does win ohio in this one. >> right. that's big. now, if he wins michigan as you have it in the map, this will be a good night for the republicans. so let's assume that michigan goes blue then the numbers begin to flip a bit. >> let's go to the fourth scenario. this is interesting because everyone -- we do it. everyone points out that no republican has won the white house without carrying ohio. this is a scenario where romney could lose ohio but still have the electoral votes to win. >> you have him winning
9:07 am
pennsylvania. i think there is a dream among the republicans that pennsylvania can ultimately fall red, go to mitt romney. but if he wins pennsylvania, then he will probably win ohio because they are states with some similar profiles. so, you see if pennsylvania goes red, it will be a good night for the republican party. >> what is interesting about pennsylvania, i hate to bring up eight years ago whenever it was, 12 years ago now you have the election issues about who is allowed to vote, who is not allowed to vote. that could cause controversy in pennsylvania. >> it could because the states basically said the voter i.d. law should not be in effect but some people are putting up big billboards saying you need to have i.d. to vote. that could cause big problems on election day. >> all about the numbers. we are talking the electoral numbers. the bottom line is your vote counts. people need to go out and vote.
9:08 am
>> my view is we haven't talked about virginia. that will be a tight one. that could decide the election. everybody in this region, no matter which party you are for, go out and work to get out the vote in the state of virginia. you could make a difference. >> all right. good to see you as always. thank you. >> thank you. >> thanks tony and lenny. a programming note. we have a new show airing on fox 5. fox 5 news edge will focus on both local and national candidates and issues during the final two weeks of the campaign. it airs every day at 6:30 p.m. we want to hear from you. tweet us your thoughts abouted election -- about the election and we may use them on the show. early voting is underway in the district. voters can cast their ballots at one judiciary square between 8:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. each ward offers early voting

9:10 am
with anybody that drives a car. on day one, if i'm honored to serve the people of virginia, i will introduce a bill to allow us to virginia to produce oil and gas off the coast then use the royalties for roads and transportation. if we have mitt romney in the white house, he will be saying yes to virginia energy from our coast to our coal fields. right now we have an administration and my opponent that doesn't have the same point of view. >> you can see the interview on our web site. we want to mention that allen's challenger, tim kaine will join us live on the fox 5 morning news next tuesday. fox 5 is holding a debate with the three candidates running for the u.s. senate in maryland a week from tomorrow from 9:00 until 10:00 in the morning. if you have a question that would you like to ask, sent it

[ minto ] you know, those ads saying mitt romneney
9:12 am
would ban all abortions and contraception seemed a bit extreme. so i looked into it. turns out, romney doesn't oppose contraception at all. in fact, he thinks abortion should be an option in cases of rape, incest, or to save a mother's life. this issue's important to me, but i'm more concerned about the debt our children will be left with. i voted for president obama last time, but we just can't afford four more years. [ romney ] i'm mitt romney and i approve this message.

other kids safe. the teen drank a 24-ounce monastery can on december 16th and another december 17th then stopped breathing and went into cardiac arrest. the autopsy report says she died of cardiac arrhythmia due to caffeine toxicity which complicated an under a lining -- underlining problem. >> you can't explain doing cpr on your own child and then when the emt's get there watching them use a defebruary but a lay tore on her four times. it's something you don't want to go through. >> we want the energy drink industry to be held accountable for injuries and deaths that they are causing to our children. we believe there are constructive steps that the energy drink industry can take to make sure that this doesn't happen to anybody else. >> the family is suing monster beverage for product liability,
9:17 am
negligence and wrongful death. monster said in a statement that it is not responsible. fda says just because a death in its database is linked to an energy drink does not mena they drew a conclusion that the drunk caused the death. >> so, the x-factor is the caffeine and she had a condition. how much caffeine. >> it can be huard to know. sometimes -- hard to know. sometimes it can be four cups of coffee. the fda does limit caffeine in soda to no more than 71 milligrams. energy drinks don't have limits. they have other ingredients that are stimulates. energy drinks aren't required to have labels. right now the agency considers them dietary supplements but that may be changing soon. >> we know, the sad part, kids are lighter than we are. it can be harmful. i don't want to place blame but what about the younger people that drink the drinks.
9:18 am
>> you are right. a lot of people asked the fda for the safety studies but the research on caffeine looks at the level of use in healthy adults. kids weigh less and might not know if they have one of these underlying health conditions where they shouldn't consume caffeine. there is problems with kids. there is a huge spike in e.r. visit since the popularity of the drinks have risen. the majority are 12 to 24. >> sad story either way. thank you so much. in other news, metro is proposing a new bus route that they hope will keep their drivers and passengers safe. the w 6 and w-8 bus routes are increasingly dangerous after rocks have been thrown at the buses even injury a driver. the incidents occurred on jasper and elvins road. metro is considering stopping bus service to the areas after 8:00 p.m. that would mean passengers would pick up a bus about a half mile down the road.

model that wants to push it up to the carolinas and pull what is left of sandy up to the washington area early next week. question marks about this but it is the possibility that it could be a player in the forecast toward the end of the seven day period. sun and clouds. warm afternoon. winds south and west 5 to 10. there is the accuweather seven- day forecast. the next several days perfect with highs in the 70s. overnight lows in the 50s and low 60s then we cool it down by the ends of the weekend. stil a question mark but showers around here with cooler temperatures by monday, only 54 degrees. that's a look at weather. allison, back to you. >> what a difference a couple of days make. while it's nice, get ready to walk. this saturday is the aids walk washington. all proceeds benefit wittman walker health and mosh a dozen other organizations dedicated to fighting hiv aids. the grand marshal too little to finish a 5k event on their own,

9:36 am
has hiv. in 2010 we had more than 200 aids related deaths in d.c. chris no good reason for those numbers to be that high. we have certainly made great progress. until those numbers get to zero, we have a lot of work to to. the work continues. >> this is the 26th annual aids walk washington. you hit a milestone when it comes to raising not just awareness but funds. 500,000 this year? >> we are up to just over 550,000 as of yesterday. we have a few more days to go. we have money that comes in the day off r of and after -- the day of and after the event. so, it's a critical part of how we care for the thousands of patients that we see every year. >> fantastic. 3800 walkers so far. the purpose of the walk, can you break it down for us. where does the money go, what do you hope to do with it? >> it serves two purposes.
9:37 am
one is to raise awareness about the hiv epidemic. and because of medical advances it's not on people's radar screens any more. people are living longer and healthier lives and a normal life. some of the crisis mentality isn't around like the '80s and '90s. this is to bring awareness back to the epidemic in d.c. and raise money. we serve more than 3,000 people living with hiv. that care has to go on for years and years. it costs more. we need more funding to come in to help care for the people. >> we know your special honoree is to little to walk or run but how can viewers get involved. >> go to the web site. if you want to walk or run we have a 5k timed run as well. you can register online. if you -- up until friday evening. if you decide the morning off to come out and walk you can go to the site and register starting at 7:00 a.m.

if you don't want to or can't you can donate or be part of what we call the sleep walker program. you register, raise money but you don't have to get out of bed that early on a saturday morning. >> that will be on our web site. in the last couple of seconds that we have, d.c., how does it fit as far as the national picture? i know you said the numbers are coming down but it's too high. >> there are encouraging numbers but d.c. is one of the top areas in the country. i think one of the biggest problems we face in d.c. and around the country is a strong stigma around hiv. we are more than three decades into the epidemic. we have families that make them eat off plastic utensils and paper plates. people won't get tested, stay in treatment. we really see stigma as the biggest barrier. >> chip lewis with wittman walker health and the race is

with the high pyramids, jumping routines it's not surprising there are injuries among cheerleaders. the american academy of pediatrics is pushing for cheerleading to become known as a sport. joining us is lynn ellis a cheer coach at seneca valley high school. thanks for coming in. >> good morning. >> let me first of all, i'm a
9:48 am
little surprised. i thought cheerleading was considered a sport. in terms of how it's officially designated in school systems across the country, it often is not classified as a sport. >> that is correct. in some areas it's an activity, some it's a club. some jurisdictions do view it as a sport. >> before we talk about why that terminology is important, let's talk about the injury factor. you have been around cheerleading for many years. the numbers we reported are going up. why are the numbers going up. >> it's important to note that the increase in sports injury and cheerleading specifically is the increased rate of participation. 20 years ago it was limited to the high school sideline cheer which was much more tame, not as much tumbling. over the last four years you had four times the increase in participants. with that you will see more
9:49 am
injuries. also i think it's important to note that the active itself, call it a sport, activity has evolved over the years. in some cases, perhaps parents and coach education hasn't kept up with that which may cause injuries to be more likely depending on the setting and the training. >> i understand or it seems to me that cheerleading competitions, there are more of those. it's not just cheering on a team but the competitions get very -- we were showing some of the video. they get physical and some of the stunting is -- seems like some of the stunting is risky. >> it depends on how you go about your stunting. there are risks associated with any athletic activity. it's what you do as a coach and parent to mitigate the risks. are your coaches safety certified. do they follow safety skills progression. do the athletes perform and practice on safe surfaces. how do you go about putting
9:50 am
them up there. are you doing the basic before you try the more difficult skills. if not, where injuries occur. are you following safety standard guidelines to make sure that your kids are doing what they need to do when they need to do it. >> these are questions a parent should ask. >> yes. >> the term sports, why this recommendation that schools adopt cheerleading as a sport formally? >> there is arguments to be made on both sides. i can tell you just simply designating it as a sport will not change necessarily how individual school districts deal with the activity. for example, if you name it a sport, it doesn't mean that you will no longer be practicing in the cafeteria, that you will have access to gym time, access to athletic trainers. that just -- changing the title won't change it. what happens is how the activity is viewed overall.
9:51 am
how does your school district look at cheerleading. you need to talk tour coach, talk to the athletic director. across the board you have athletic directors that see cheerleading as standing on the sidelines with the pom poms and cheering. you have others that recognize the physicality of cheerleading and they take the steps to make it safer within the school. you have some districts that have the same type of views. as parents and coaches, you need to be aware of how it's viewed in your district whether it's called a club, activity, a sport. >> sounds like what you are saying is you got to do your due diligence? >> exactly. lynn ellis a cheer coach with seneca valley high school. thank you for coming in. >> thank you for having me. the movie war horse earned six academy award nominations. now it's moving from the big

screen to the stage. holly morris joins us. >> reporter: allison, i have done a lot of things at the kennedy center. i never thought that i would be riding a horse in the grand foyer but here i am on top of joey, the star of war horse. let's pick it up a bit. this is one of those shows where you are like am i really seeing what i think i am seeing? that is in part because of the magic of joey when they bring the horse to life. and another is the people that interact like andrew. good morning. >> good morning. >> you know about joey's mass gibing. >> yes. >> and what a wonderful friend he is. >> i will try to dismount gracefully. >> you are on your own or do you want help. >> i'm on my own. if i fall, don't laugh. what makes the story of the

show so special. >> what is wonderful about the relationship -- well done by the way. what is wonderful about the relationship between joey and albert is that they find themselves in a position early in life where they need each other. that's all they have and they are thrust upon each other and they are a blessing in each other's lives. albert is alonely boy from a difficult home. the two of them come together at a perfect time. >> you really do interact with joey throughout the show. you can pet joey. >> joey is a real horse. he has always been since the minute that we as cast members and puppeteers met him. when we come in for entrances, when joey is present he is a horse.
9:54 am
when you are in the zone and you are in your character and on stage, is there really a point where you forget that this is a puppet. >> i forget probably quicker than the audience which is about three minutes. at this point, as soon as i see joey, i forget. what the puppeteers do is brilliant at their craft. you forget that they are there. >> i told the story this morning, my mother-in-law lives in manhattan. when she saw war horse the play she refused to go see the movie because she had such a moment when i saw it on stage that i didn't want to raw than. >> what is difficult about the movie, most people think when you say you are in war horse they say the movie. steven spielberg saw the original production in london, was so inspired by it that he decided to take the rights and make it into a movie. what you find is that there is
9:55 am
something magical about what adrian and bazel have created with joey. there is something a little bit spectacular, beyond belief. >> the thing that i think would be the hardest to capture, which makes the emotions run so high, is the relationship that you have with an animal because you can't really -- he doesn't talk back to you, yet you communicate. to be able to do that on stage must be amazing. >> like anything else, any other relationship you have with a dog, a cat, that is where you infuse it. what is so special about the relationship with animals which is why audiences go to that place and have assist cyril con -- and have a vice sir rail connection, it's beyond words. it makes it a more holistic and pure relationship. >> so, like, when you work with animals you never know, they
9:56 am
are unpredictable, do unpredictable things happen with joey. >> which is so special in live theater because it's unique. but with this, every night you never quite know how joey will react to something. we have the framework we live in. joey's responsibility is to be a horse. if he is frightened or -- he won't do it. >> magical. >> thank you so much. thank you to joey for coming out with us this morning. myfoxdc.com is the web site. it opens tonight through november 11th each and every night. it's a special memory and a moment. come out and have it for your family. we will have more when we come back. stay with us. ith us. as governor, i cut five billllion dollars in spendg
