time on this but voter fraud has been in the news and we have seen this under cover video of patrick maran who was the field director for his dad jim moran talking about voter fraud. there's a person who comes up and says he's a reporter -- says he's a person. but patrick says unfortunate things. he has stepped down. but he in no way has committed voter fraud. how damaging is something like this? does the voter look at this and think about the campaign as a whole or this was a miss step? >> the campaign took the right step. they asked him to step down which he did. and that takes care of it with regard to that particular campaign. the overall issue of voter fraud is one we wrestle with up in pennsylvania, for example.

we had intimidation of voters that took place in philadelphia back a couple years ago. the whole question of voter fraud is a legitimate question i think. and that's what this project is trying to do is demonstrate that it's real and not as some people say a minor problem. but i think that in this particular case that the campaign made the right decision. and said that even the implications of voter fraud are not acceptable to us. >> he has come out and said he shouldn't have even humored this person which is what he thought he was doing. do you have thoughts on it? >> i don't think he was trying to advocate voter fraud. i think he was responding how would you do it? i don't know if i'd do this or that. in today's day and age, no matter what you say gets blown up out of proportion. we had a big case where the

republican national committee hired florida and they were doing things legal and the rnc fired them. there's always mistakes going on. i just voetd. -- voted. they checked me three different times. a lot of good ning things are happening. but i don't think it's a major problem. i think jim is going to get elected. been a great congressman. i'm glad i'm in his district. >> let's move on talking about national politics. this poll that came out. do you believe that an incumbent president is where he should be right now with this tight number? >> a year ago nobody thought obama could win. the fact that they are close is an indication that the american people are starting to make their decisions and looking at which candidates

best represents as a fiscally conservative democrat. my candidate i did vote for was barack obama. going to be better than what governor romney wants to do. >> what do you think about these close numbers? >> the momentum is with mitt romney right now. that's where we would want to be. the thing is some of these national numbers are not as meaningful as they might seem because you have states that are going to vote for obama. that shows up in the national data. what you have to look at in the swing state. the states that's really going to determine the elector call college vote. there's a poll out this week that shows romney up by four points in pennsylvania. it's a republican poll but that's been accurate in the past. and the field momentum in pennsylvania is pretty considerable. so i think

mitt romney is on a roll and large part because people got introduced to the real mitt romney and like what they saw. >> how big of a game changer were these debates? >> i think the debates give the candidates an opportunity to talk to the american people directly. this is an election where we're having clear choices on what you want to do. president obama has laid out how he wants to work and dealing with the deficit and dealing with the economy and how we go through this whole process of how you reduce the deficit. and you listen to governor romney. more and more people start to focus in on it. you can't give a $5 trillion tax cut and adds $7 trillion on top of the numbers now and not tell the american people you have to pay for it. you can't do it by eliminating loopholes.

>> and you can't do it by taxing the rich either. >> and i agree with you on that. >> and, you know, the difference here is the fact that obama has four years of showing us what he would do. and that four years has been a failure. failure in foreign policy and domestic policy. he put out a glossy booklet this week that said what the next four years would look like. exactly like the last four years. >> marty, last word. >> i find it interesting because governor romney has made three promises for the end of his second term. he would balance the budget by 2020. paul ryan doesn't do it until 2040. increase by the end of his second term and energy efficient. give obama one more

term. the deficit is the toughest thing to deal with. you just can't come into a mess that the republican party created for this country over the years with george bush when they got rid of pay as you go. remember how you balance the budget with clinton? you make sure any increase spending is offset by cuts in spending. they eliminated that. two tax cuts not paid for. and i'll guarantee you we would have never fought those two wars we would have to pay for it. >> we were a spending congress. >> come on, bob. the president is known as a veto pin. >> he didn't use the vote owe pin. >> we'll pick it up right here next weekend. we'll be right back in the meantime. le. good gf employees out there. this was a booming place. and mitt romney and bain capital turned it in to a junk yard.

washington international horse show draws horses and riders from all over the world. >> the finest of many breeds and takes place this week at the verizon center. holly has a preview. >> reporter: these riders compete all year long in terms of getting enough points to qualify to get here to compete. these are the best riders in the nation. they are competing in front of the most disearning judges and competing on the most creative courses. nobody knows that more than robert who is the co manager of the show. this is a big deal on many different levels. >> it's probably our number one competition in the united states. the washington international has been going on for 54 years. a major event on the international world scene. >> here we are already. it's not even 8:00 and we have competition going on. something that takes place over several days. for these riders to come here and compete in an indoor

arena, how has that changed the dynamic? >> it's tough obviously putting on an event like this. you are talking about an arena has only 280 feet long. these riders train their horses. >> talk about the transition in terms of the verizon center turning it into a competitive arena. >> david and i have managed this for the last five years. this procedure has gone on way before we got here. normally, it has to be transitioned from a hockey arena. but the nhl not being here, we transitioned it from a concert arena. and 24 hours later you have sand. an awful lot of sand that has to come in. >> what's the biggest logistical challenge? >> that would be one of the biggest. 48 loads of sand and 250 stalls here in the building and on f street closing down part of the city. one of the

great cities in the world is not the easiest thing in the world. and we have double that double of horses actually competing here. so there's a transition within the week. >> how much do you interact or get feedback from the stables that are here, the riders that are here. >> well, it's a 24-hour-a-day deal. when the competition is not going on. at night are the big jumpers. that leads up to the president scuff on saturday night. but even at 2:00 in the morning you are going to see riders here training, warming up. you can't just show up for your event. >> what about the judges? do they put in requests about how to make the show better? >> there are two different types of competitions. those are judged subjectively. and then you have the jumper competitions at night. those are the big jumps and if a jump comes down

good morning. i'm tony perkins. >> i'm allison seymour. happy you are with us this hour. >> let's get straight to the latest on hurricane sandy. the category 2 storm hit cuba overnight. now tropical storm warnings are in effect for the florida coast possibly toward the united states. yesterday sandy slammed jamaica killing at least two people. and it's still too soon to tell what impact sandy will have, federal forecasters are bracing for the worst. could collide with an early winter storm creating a super storm. that could mean the potential for heavy rain, even snow, winds and flooding. this all sounds alarming, we don't want to alarm you. people are concerned about this. tucker is here with the details. >> it's all just a possibility. we're not sure where it's going to track. some of the computer models want to take it out to

sea. worst case scenario were to happen, everything we just mentioned including the possibility of winter weather out to the west. not here in washington. i'll have more on this but here's your latest information and just getting the 8:00 update here. winds are still 105 miles per hour. category 2 hurricane and tracking off to the north at 10 miles per hour. it slowed down just a bit. that movement will be a key factor. run computer models and updates where it's going to be tracking. the most immediate threat the bahamas. hurricane warnings there. we'll talk local weather quickly. we're doing great. sunshine with mild temperature s this afternoon. we should be up near 75 for an afternoon high. 52 in washington. 56 in new york. and 57 in richmond. here are your forecast

isn't making much of an impact. the poll still shows the president tied with mitt romney. and romney is spending a whole day in the buckeye state which could make or break his election chances. the time in one state is temporary. yesterday the former massachusetts governor blitzed other battleground states riding momentum through appearances in nevada and iowa. obama is weighing in on the comments made by a candidate from indiana about rape and abortion. richard merdock said pregnants of rape are intended by god. when asked about it, here's what he said. >> rape is rape. it is a crime. and so these distinctions don't make any sense to me.

would need in order to commit fraud. >> utility bill or something like that. >> patrick moran was approached on october 8th. posing says he coming up to the scheme to cast ballots. in the video moran does the guy the new voter id laws would make it tough. and put his energy in getting nonvoters to the polls. moran is the one who brought up the idea using fake utility bills. >> he's talking about what we would need to do in order to vote in other people's names. anything other than this is outrageous. this is illegal, this is a felony is appalling. >> i don't like news gathering

that bates people and gets them to say things almost by goating them along and pushing them towards it. but again, even when it's the case, nobody should cross that line or come close. patrick moran did. >> congressman moran is not implicated. he is running for re-election. patrick released a statement which reads in part quote at no point have i or will i ever endorse any unethical behavior. at no point did i take this personal seriously. for thoonl reason did i humor him. i should have immediately walked away making it clear there is no place in the process for even a suggestion of illegal behavior joking or not. end quote. this is refuelling the controversy. doesn't have to have a picture. documents like those talked about utility bills, bank statements or a

complicated. a fatal crash occurred earlier this morning. three people were killed as a result of this accident. route 1 remains shut down in each direction. police are still cleaning up accident activity where five vehicles were involved northbound on the bw parkway before 198. well north of town accident activity southbound 29. delays 29 at fair land road where the left lane is blocked. the long hall headed out to the split about an hour and 22 minute ride. that's a check of your fox 5 on time traffic. >> thank you very much julie. booster seats supposed to keep your children safe in the event of a car crash. is the seat in your car designed to do the best job? the insurance institute is out this morning with new rankings. joins us now with the results of how to make sure you are using

that seat correctly. let's talk first of all about the new report that is out. from what i read, most of the seats that you surveyed and you surveyed many of them are fine. there are a couple that are not. >> that's right. 91 seats out there now and about half of them are those seats would position seats properly in almost any vehicle. >> okay. when we're talking about seating the children properly, that's all about where the seat belt falls on the child. >> that's right. the purpose of the booster to elevate the child so the seat belts fit children properly to protect them in a crash. >> first, i want to put up a graphic or two that we have to show which are the two that are not recommended rating. we'll take a look at that now.

they are both by safety first. >> yes. >> one of them is the safety first all in one. the other one is the safety first alpha omega elite. and both of these are not recommended rating. why? what's the problem? >> our evaluations take measure the seat belt. in any of the seat belt configurations we look at, the booster wasn't ensuring good belt fit. and this is one of the not recommended seats. as you say, they are both safety first by dora l is the company. parents like these seats are known as three and one seats. child restraint with a harness, forward facing and rear facing and can be converted to a booster. these seats don't work

well as boosters. >> show me what the problem is. >> the lap belt is sitting on the tummy of the child. that's the most vulnerable place. the belt should be flat on the upper thighs. it's beginning to fall off the shoulder. should be positioned across the center of the shoulder. >> there's not a big difference between that position and the other position but can be all the difference in the world. >> that's right. the ratings are trying to do is take the guesswork. that booster should provide good lap and shoulder belt fit in almost any vehicle. >> boosters generally are for children 4 to 8 years old. >> that's the age range but the best advice now is to keep their child first of all in a child restraint as long as possible before they move to a booster.

hurricane conditions. we have to really watch this track as we get into the end of the weekend earl louisiana next week. the computer models have not been consistent. at least one of the computer models that hurricane forecasters really depend on has been consistent trying to bring this storm close to the eastern sea board by sate sunday and early monday. the cold front, the cooler air would energize with less of sandy and could have issues around here with gusty winds. perhaps rain across the midatlantic. a lot of questions with this. fine tune the forecast as we get closer. as we remember that time frame as you are focusing on the next 7 days. 75 today. temperatures guaranteed to be cooler around here by sunday, monday and tuesday. but, again, lots of question marks about the track of sandy.

welcome back. for more than 50 years, the washington international horse show has been a show case with the finest breeds and riders from all over the world. >> as we are learning, some of the most promising talent comes from our area. at the verizon center with details now. >> it's been interesting as we've been watching the competition go on, they announce the rider and where they are from. quite a few that's been from our area which speaks to the talent that is in the greater washington area in terms of this sport. we came over here because we thought this would be fun. this is where the riders warmup before they go out and compete. this is a very busy area. you are right in terms of young people from our area and involved in this year's show. i have hannah with me.

she is this year's youth ambassador. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> so first of all, how excited were you to be named that? >> i was so excited. this was a position i could see myself doing easily. >> you competed for years? >> not in this show. i've competed in local day which is a show run by washington. >> you knew all about it. you knew you could be a good ambassador. so what are your duties? >> my greatest duty is to provide the staff with a younger perspective on all the programs. >> what is the younger perspective? >> i want to make sure we keep the horse show young and exciting like kids day on saturday. and bar night which is tonight. >> what goes on at bar night? >> it's a great night for local barns to come and cheer. it's a great night for the barn. >> so sometimes when people see this sport they might think it's

go. this is all preparation you have right out here with all the other horses. >> you warmup here and go through the tunnel and head out there. tell me what your mind set is. >> i have to be extremely focused. the course what i have to do, i'm visualizing what's going on and what i'm doing out there so i know what i have to do. and what me and my horse have to do. >> you are in the hunters, right? >> yes. >> a lot of that is based on the horse. how do you make sure the horse performs the best it can? >> i have to make my horse look perfect. but i have to look like i'm not doing anything. natural and easy. >> how intimidating is it to compete in this show? >> it is very intimidating but also really exciting. i had a really great time and it was just amazing to be here. >> is it amazing you ever stop and think i am in downtown dc and i'm on my horse.

you do for a living. before getting this role, were you a janis joplin fan? >> all my life. my parents had the best record collection in town and i was raised on all the best music. so yeah. >> this must be a dream come true. >> it really is. before i got this role, i'm a touring musician and blues and soul band. she's definitely an idol. to be able to play someone i looked up to so much. >> that's one of the interesting things about this show and a show like this. because you can't just cast an actor. you have to have the chops. >> right. it's like a very designer role. if you can pick and choose parts, having done acting and been part of that and also being a musician, i kind of have the right dynamic of both worlds to put them together on this production.

>> janis joplin know a will the about her. one of these performer i wonder if the younger generation is as aware of her. she did pass as a young age but the music is still out there. tell me about who is coming to the show. young people? old people? >> we actually did a matinee performance for kids and they were into it. they had print outs and they were singing along having the best time. and teenagers usually things aren't cool. but they were actually really into it. but probably the main age group is around 50 to 65. people that were teenagers and children and young adults because this is their glory music. sometimes like i said i'll be singing piece of my

heart and tears. but big smiles on their faces. >> tell me about the show itself. it's not just a performance show. you are telling the story of her life. she had difficult challenges in her life. >> yes, she did. the whole premise of this show it would be if she was still alive, a 27-year-old and she did a show. it's one night with janis joplin. kind of like a first person perspective. artist comes out, does the story, does the number. so in between the songs, i'm doing monologues and where her musical influences came from. that's the corner stone. she was deeply rooted in blues music. and this show really highlights what artists were important to her and who she became musically. and the

actress sebrina. all of those. >> it's not just janis's music. >> we have three back up singers and a full band. >> talk to me about the voice. her voice was unique . >> very. >> always seemed to me it's got to be difficult to sing like that night after night. is it? >> it can be. for some reason, i'm able to. for some reason, i have the muscle. it's like working out. and i'm conditioned for it right now. when we were off for a month and you come back, oh, that's where that came from. but you have to be preventive and take care of yourself. >> looks like a great show. we are happy you came to join us. one night with janis joplin . showing at arena stage running through november 4th. >> correct. >> about a week or so left of the show. and we have all the information at our web site.

very nice to have you. >> thank you. >> see you again. >> great. thank you. the centers for disease control says this year whooping cough has sickened 32,000 americans and killed 16. a panel of vaccine experts is advising all pregnant women to get a booster shot. the fox medical team joins us from atlanta to talk about why. and it's strange here talking about whooping cough. a whole lot of people have not seen this. why is this making a come back now? >> reporter: good morning. there are several reason s. tends to run in cycles. seeing a real uptake. whooping cough is an infection that caused by a bacteria and starts out like a regular cold, maybe a severe cold. after a couple weeks you

start developing this deep severe cough. that is really dangerous especially for very young babies. babies cannot be vaccinated until they get their first vaccine at two months. so what they are seeing is these complications in babies who are three months and younger. and asking women who are pregnant to go ahead and get a booster shot, it's called a tdap booster. they are telling people if they do not get it when they are pregnant, they need it before they leave the hospital. the idea is you are trying to build a circle of protection around that baby who is not immunized and the young body of the baby is not able to fight off like whooping cough. most of us have never seen whooping cough before. i've talked to parents. they say it is just about the scareiest thing when your baby cannot breathe. it is just

terrifying. >> it does sound terrible. let's switch gears. we've been talking about it. you have tips on putting together a cold and flu kit. you have five things that you need in there. can you tell us what they are? >> yes. we talked to a nurse practitioner and asked her to take us shopping. and she said you really don't need more than a handful of things. musinex. it helps you get all that junk that's in your chest out. really important. you also need a cold and flu medication. that's going to help you with some of the symptoms. the cough, not being able to sleep. and she recommends you get a good working thermometer. help keep track of your temperature and see if you are moving in the higher fever area where you might need to get help. couple of other things to have. antihistomine. and a pain
