storm evolving basically overnight. starting to take on some of the characteristics that were forecast. you can see it's undergoing wind shear now. the eye feature we had yesterday, that's a thing of the past. still a category 1 hurricane, tracking off to the north and west at about 13. it will interact with a cold front to the west, and that will likely cause issues across the mid-atlantic. time frame monday and tuesday. the rain will start late sunday afternoon. main event i think will be monday and tuesday. a lot of question marks about the intensity and eventual path of this storm. but there is cause for concern across the mid-atlantic. could be dealing with some of the issues relating to sandy by early next week. local weather and little fog this morning. no problems for friday. highs up to 70. now, it's 64 in washington.

62 at dulles and bwi marshall. forecast today, highs about 70 degrees later this afternoon, with sun developing after we burn off the fog later today. that's a look at the forecast. having a good time down here, back up to you. >> i heard the laughing in the background. thank you, tucker. local crews are preparing for the worst with this storm and plan to work throughout the storm to ensure everyone is safe. >> officials in virginia say the state is on increased readiness plan, meaning crews are ready to respond at any time. sherri ly is live in prince george's county, maryland, with how crews there are preparing, too. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, allison. prince george's county had already brought in road crews this morning for a preplanned snow drill. but with hurricane sandy barreling towards the east coast, they now found themselves in the midst of hurricane preparations. as snow plows headed out this morning for a dry run, they had

a secondary mission, clear backed up storm drains and check for trees that could be a threat to power lines. the command center will be ready and they'll have extra man power at pumping stations in case of flooding. the hurricane is expected to pack high winds, pounding rain and heavy surf up and down the east coast, as it heads through the area in the coming days. virginia, the state of emergency operation center is prepared to implement emergency operation plans. it's the same across the region, as emergency planners get ready should the hurricane deliver a devastating blow. >> it can be projected to be a horrendous storm and it veers and goes away. so it makes it a little bit precarious for us to know when to bring staff. staff is on standby now. >> reporter: here are some things you can do as well to prepare for the storm. charge your cell phone. make sure you have a full tank

enhanced satellite images, interactive models, a live chat and more. a woman is found dead in an apartment in leesburg, virginia. the discovery was made by police early this morning. the woman's relatives had called investigators after they hadn't heard from her in a few days. police aren't saying how she died, but call the incident isolated and stress that there's no threat to the public. president obama will be at the white house today, he has several interviews scheduled, including one with mtv. governor mitt romney will campaign in ohio and iowa. and monday, president obama returns to virginia. a new fox new poll of likely voters in virginia shows governor romney with 47% support compared to president obama's 45%. and president obama is now first sitting u.s. president to vote before election day.

he cast his vote at a polling site near his chicago home yesterday. illinois is one of several states that has early voting. the campaign camp says his participation will send a strong message to voters. a lot of money pouring into the race. as of yesterday both campaigns have raised $2 billion. the eye popping figure puts the election on the track to be the costliest ever. the outpouring of donations is coming from both ordinary citizens and the richest americans, hoping to influence the election. the 37th annual marine corps marathon and the 10k race take place sunday in northern virginia and d.c. runners from all over the world take part in what's now one of the top marathons in the nation. >> fox 5's sarah simmons is live at what will be the finish line of this year's race. hey, sarah. >> reporter: it's always exciting to see when the

preparations are underway. i was driving home yesterday and seeing everything that was going up. it's always exciting the weekend of the marathon and there are a lot of things surrounding it. basically a whole weekend of events that people are able to take part in. with me to talk more about that is the director of the marine corps marathon. thank you for coming by. >> we are excited. we are pumped. the runners are pumped. we opened up the doors to the expo yesterday at 4:00, and they are coming to town. >> reporter: how many again? >> we have 30,000 runners between the marathon and 10k, and they are excited to come to washington, d.c. and run on the streets and see our monuments and some of the things we sometimes take for granted, how lucky we are to live here. >> reporter: so true. as i was mentioning, runners start coming into town thursday and friday. then tomorrow is kind of when

the things get going. you have things for kids to do and other fun things. tell us a bit about it. >> we have our largest healthy kids fun run tomorrow. 3600 children will show up. if you were there last year in the snowstorm and saw the enthusiasm, these kids are coming. they only run one speed. unlike the marathon runners who come in different speeds. they're so excited. we not only want to teach them about health and fitness and running, the sponsors teach them about habitats, growing trees. reading books. so many good lessons. >> reporter: l's talk more about the race itself. there are new things you have. tell us about that with social media and different things. >> that is going to explode on sunday. we're doing a runner broadcast where the runner, their times and accomplishments on race day

one that's so special you think to people? >> this is a beautiful city. it's one of my favorite cities to run in. you're running the entire race outside these gorgeous monuments and water ways and veterans running with incredible stories. emotional appeal to this race, so i'm back again. >> reporter: you've ran how many marathons, six? >> seven or eight. i think it's eight. >> reporter: you get to meet a lot of people, you think you don't meet at the other marathons, like you mentioned the veterans out here. >> yeah. i work with a lot of the military groups, so i personally know a lot of these people running and some of the incredible stories. yeah, it's very emotional. it's emotional standing here in front of the memorial. a well put on event. >> reporter: steve and rick, thank you so much for talking with us. again, this will be happening all week long, and there's going to be road closures, that

place and elsewhere. his new book is "extreme productivity: boost your results, reduce your hours" he joins us now. thank you for coming in. good to have you here. >> glad to be here, tony. >> everybody needs this book. here in the washington area, i love what you say in here, and here's what it seems to me it's all about, we feel simply like there are not enough hours in the day to get done the things that we need to do. is that our own fault pretty much? >> i think so, because we're very focused on how many hours we're putting in as opposed to what we're achieving. the real point of our clients, friends, consumers, what are we getting accomplished, not how many hours we're spending at the office. if we can shift our mindset to what we're doing instead of the hours we're putting in, that's the first main step forward. >> i want to get to the concrete things you talk about in here. one of the things you talk about, which i love and i've always said this, meetings. meetings in the work place. i have always said it seems to

me the result of most meetings, you decide to meet again at some point. tell me your whole concept about meetings. >> well, to begin with, there are only a few reasons to have meetings. one is to debate issues. second is to come up with creative solutions, and third is to actually have personal relationship with a client or a colleague that you don't know before. so those are limited reasons. most meetings don't meet those tests. the most important thing is to avoid meetings, don't call them in if people tell you they want you to go to a meeting, one thing you can say is, look, i'm not going unless you give me an agenda and background material. another thing you can say is, how long is this meeting? my view is any meeting over an hour is suspect. any meeting over 90 minutes is totally worthless. i think we really have to be very tough on meetings. when you get there, the worst thing i hate is when the presenter stands up and goes

through 10, 20, 30 power points, reading literally off the power point. this is a total waste of time. >> and boring. >> it is boring. thepoint of the meeting is to discuss things. if you see somebody doing that, you should say, nicely, look, this is great stuff. why don't you finish up so we can debate it. >> how do you -- and again, i love how direct you are in the book, and you say, you know, we need to say sometimes to our superiors some of these things, but how do you do that in a tactful way and not get fired? >> first, you have to build up trust with your boss. managing your boss, which is a separate chapter here, is a very important chapter. and you have to get, have a good conversation with your boss. figure out together what does he or she want you to get done in the next week or month, and what are the metrics which you

can get it done. bosses are afraid people will go going to the baseball game or something. if you have a good set of objectives, your boss will let up and it doesn't matter whether you're in the office at 10:00 or 9:00 or 8:00. i'm proud of the fact, though i ran two large companies, i was always home at 7:00 p.m. to have dinner with my family and my kids. >> how about that. >> lots of people say they can't do that. >> but you can. >> you can. and you can because first of all, gives you an incentive to work faster and second of all, you have to do something, you can do it after 10:00 p.m. >> we're almost out of time. can you stress quickly the whole e-mail thing. this is something i have to say i get caught up in, reading e- mails, trying to figure out how to respond, who to respond to. tell me your concept of that. >> my concept is two-part, first of all you have to be disciplined to take 80 to 90% and disregard them right away. you can tell from the tags you're getting a standard thing or this is something that comes

every day. but second part is the things that are important, deal with then and there. don't put it off. if you put it off, you may forget it, and if you don't forget it, you say a week later, now i want to get back to this, then you'll spend an hour looking for it. that's the key to e-mails. the last thing i say is, if somebody says something nice to you or helps you in an e-mail, show your gratitude by not sending an e-mail that just says, thank you. those are the wasteful e-mails. >> fascinating stuff. in washington, d.c., this is a big problem, productivity using your time, fascinating book with real solutions. lot it depreciates, but the dealer can put 1,000 miles on it, and can still sell it as a brand-new automobile? haven't we all seen those cars with the dealer plates? i am phoning a dear friend to answer this question. it is the one and only robert, owner of easterns motors. good morning, robert. >> good morning. how are you? >> better now talking to you. what is the deal with this? we have all seen those really pretty cars and the dealer tag. does it lose the same amount? of course it does, right, it's not on the lot anymore? >> difference between retail and trade in value, one, the dealers are in the business of selling at tail and taking trade ins for resale. as far as a vehicle going over a curb and falling off a cliff

is old wives' tale. it does go from being a new vehicle to a used vehicle if you were to make a u-turn and come back in the dealership. as far as a vehicle being driven by the dealer, there are guidelines by different manufacturers that keep the new car options, new car warranty, the new car financing up to certain miles, that if an employee of the dealership or factory to drive the car, it will continue to offer a new car warranty and new car options for financing. also demos, if they use it as a service loaner, up to 2500 miles, different manufacturers have different limits, will permit the car to stay with the new car options. those are the advantages, the zero percentage for example, on the new car only, not used car. >> it stays new as long as a

radar. that milky gray you see, starting to get breaks in the cover. i think we'll see afternoon sun. mostly cloudy start for your day the next couple of hours and afternoon sun with highs about 70. that green you see, that's a cold front. it will be a big player in our forecast as we get into the weekend. here's the latest with sandy. it looks like it's getting sheered apart. not a pretty sight if you're a hurricane. but that's temporarily good news for us. starting to lose some of its structure. what is happening here, it's transitioning into its extra tropical nature. this was forecast to happen. over the near term, this storm won't be terribly strong. track off to the north and west at about 13. will push off to the north and east and now the forecast is to pull it back into the mid- atlantic coast by sunday, monday and tuesday. here's the latest. category 1 hurricane with 80- mile-per-hour winds. tracking to the east and pulled

back to the mid-atlantic and if this track were to verify, still big cone of uncertainty, could track further to the north, still question marks. if this were to verify as a category 1 hurricane, we would be impacted very hard here monday and tuesday, with extremely heavy rains. could be talking about winds gusting, sustained winds 50, 60 miles per hour. even here in washington. remember, isabel when it came up the coast last year it tracked just offshore. we were on the western fringe in washington. this one will get all of us. the wind field will expand as this storm becomes a hybrid. maybe 300 miles across tropical force winds. this will be a major story here early next week. futurecast, fine today. moves up the coast and by sunday afternoon, the banding

taking place in washington. the real event gets in sunday night and early monday. monday morning at 6:00 and getting heavy rain across the area. beach erosion, that's a guarantee. surge, flooding, yeah, unfortunately high tide, our moon is full monday, the tidal surges will be extra high by monday and tuesday. power outages, always a guarantee around here. and flooding rain. looking at potential for 5 to 8 inches of rain across parts of the area here by tuesday afternoon, tuesday night. there's your accu weather seven- day forecast. many question marks about the monday, tuesday time frame. in it does occur, primetime monday and tuesday. until then, we're fine. highs monday and tuesday upper 40s to about 50. chilly around here. now let's have fun with tony. let me mention quick, the fox 5 weather app, free, and will give you weather information 24

walker there, and you could go back in time and tell him anything, what would you tell him? >> mainly business stuff. mainly business stuff. that's what i would tell him. and tt would be it. gabe kaplan, who we started with, said look, we're all going to be successful. don't spend any money. >> that's what you want to know. your rise to success was, i won't say it was quick, but when it happened, it was big. >> i think that i was in a school of guys and girls, from richard pryor to jay leno to david letterman, david brenner, and whatever happened, happened at one time. it was a strange kind of thing. freddie prince was in that, gabe kaplan was in that. a lot of people in there. seemed like an explosion of guys at the same time. usually doesn't happen like that now.
