virginia. let's start off with the latest crash popped up on us. southbound 95 multi vehicle accident tying up the left side. the crash that we had earlier this northern north of 32 has cleared. traffic still backed up pushing your way up towards 175. accident activity north i 95. stay to the right to get by there. multi vehicle accident inner loop of the beltway approaching van dorn street. that's tied up the right side of the road. you are now slowing down to 16 miles an hour headed over towards 95 and 395. more troubles in virginia eastbound on 66. you'll find the left side of the roadway is blocked eastbound inside of the beltway. that's a check of your fox 5 on time traffic. >> thanks. today's big story

will play out in an arizona courtroom. 6 dead and injured. this was in january of 2011. some victims will confront him in court for the first time. and also word that giffords will attend the sentencing hearing. he is diagnosed with schizophrenia will get life without parole. part of the plea deal that spared him the death penalty. >> the race for president is over and now the hard work begins. as voters left the polls on election day. exit polls show the majority think the economy is the most important issue. only 15% said the focus should be on taming the deficit. the latest from capitol hill where a fiscal cliff is on the horizon. >> president obama has won another four years but does he

have the mandate? house republicans also won on tuesday. with the fiscal cliff approaching at the end of the year, the fundamentals haven't really changed. the first family about to settle in for another term. won't be much time to celebrate. the fiscal cliff is approaching just down the street and the government could start hemorrhaging cash at the end of the year. >> the fiscal year is $200 billion of spending cuts. going over the full cliff is a recipe. there's no question about it. >> after tuesday does the president have the mandate to raise taxes on the wealthy? something he has pushed for years. >> this is the message american people sent from all over. and that is they are tired of these partisan gridlocks. >> point to the impact higher taxes would have on hiring. but house speaker john boehner is

shown a willingness to raise revenue if it involves simplifying the tax system. not just raising rates. >> for the purposes of bipartisan agreement, we're willing to accept new revenue under the right conditions. >> and the reaction already from the markets. the dow fell in a big way yesterday. that's due to things happening overseas but also has to do with the approaching fiscal cliff. in washington, fox news. >> president obama will become the first sitting u.s. president to visit the southeast asian country of berma later this month. it was a repressive military regime. the white house has encouraged the move towards democracy. the visit was announced this morning. >> election official inside virginia are thinking of solutions to the long lines of voters forced to wait during

tuesday's election. voters shouldn't have to wait more than an hour. using optical scans instead of touch screens and bringing in more voting machines. the problem is being blamed on a high voter turn out and few voting machines. >> with the election in the books metro is looking ahead to the inauguration. that's also martin luther king junior day. smart trip cards are already on sale. there will be rush hour service for 17 hours on inauguration day from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m. peak fairs will be charged during that time. and charge for parking in lots. and that will be paid on the way out by smart trip card or credit card. >> the museum wants to get you close to the action for

the latest happens last thrsday in the 6,000 block. >> tracking down a man that attacked a 17-year-old girl. >> this happened tuesday night at the thomas jefferson library. melanie is live on the scene with details of the suspect. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is one of those stories that makes you shake your head. a public library is one of the last places you expect someone would be attacked. especially a teenager. appears people here at the library were familiar with this suspect. just before 9:00 tuesday night as the staff was getting to close up the library for a night. and they heard a girl scream. it was a 17-year-old student in the bathroom. touched and push by a man who followed her in there. the teen had been studying most of the day and noticed a guy was

starring at her. she saw the guy got up to follow her. she thought ducking in the bathroom was a better idea than going out into the parking lot alone. the teen ended up screaming and kicking the man and he ran away. >> this person was between five-seven and five-ten. he was african american. a shaved bald head a gap in his tooth and a scar on his head. >> reporter: they were familiar with this guy. seen him in the library before but never had any trouble from him. in addition, they say the man was wearing a long sleeved pail green shirt, khaki pants and carrying a brown or a tan soft leather briefcase. other patrons say they've felt safe here. but they say now obviously when hearing about

no reports of damages and no tsunami warning. >> doctors in philadelphia say they have successfully separated 8 month old conjoined twins. the surgery took place in philadelphia. the girls were joined at the xeft and stomach. both babies are doing well and should lead healthy lives. >> seseme street is doing a hurricane special tomorrow. it's part of a series of disaster themed joins. about a devastating hurricane that destroyed big bird's nest and left the neighborhood in chaos. the series ran in 2005 following hurricane katrina. and last week they decided to air it again in the wake of super storm sandy. >> let's go back now to our top story. that naftly nor'easter that slammed new york and new

jersey. >> many communities are affected including long island. that's where where find jill this morning. >> reporter: yes, good morning. we areness door where we found houseboats which are damaged. this is from sandy. we're dealing with some of the affects and snow here. take a look behind us. you can see those houseboats. that is a big boat that veered into the houseboat. so again, out of these 12 boats here, only three remain. and we'll pan over to the left here through the parking lot and looks like those are two more houseboats in the middle of the street. here people are without power. new york, new jersey and connecticut. and take a look. another houseboat remains on the front lawn of somebody's home.

devastating here. we have lots of customers. 270,000 without power. and again throughout the whole east coast. lots of troubles with power issues. we have people here who stayed. one gentleman there coming out of his house. i believe has a gas can there. people running out and about. trying to get fuel which has been another big issue. a shortage of generators. people want to keep warm. it's been difficult for them to come here. if we ran this way, one more houseboat that is under water. and again, we were told 6 feet tidal wave came in. one resident actually stayed here throughout the storm. if it wasn't for his floating dock that was able to rise up, he would have been washed away. severely damaged. so complete devastation here . residents without the power, they can't catch a break.

omalley gained in tuesday's election. governor bob mcdonald of virginia has left to celebrate. joining us now for a look at the fall out is robert mc cart ney. columnist for the washington post. have you recovered from what was an all nighter? >> i got a lot of sleep. tried to catch up on the night before. >> still talking about the election. let's talk about this relationship before the election. these are two heavy hitters right? in our backyard. >> they've become sort of friendly fairly prominent rivals even at the national level. of course, they are neighbors. one's a democrat. one's a republican. they had their parties governor's association and often invited to be antagonists on talk shows that

discuss politics. one representing the republican view. and one the democratic view. mcdonald for romney and the campaign and omalley for obama. friendly but fairly pointed and substantial rivalry over whether the democratic view or the republican view is what's best for the country and they compare their state's economic performance and education performance. it's an on going thing. they both benefit from the attention. >> so now here comes the election and we know the results of the ballot initiatives. what's going on now? >> omalley won big. it was a democratic day overall. and he benefited from that. and also by taking risks in maryland medical doctor by pushing fairly controversial and risky things. same sex marriage first time it's been approved by popular vote in the country.

and also in maine of course. but happened in maryland, the first time it ever happened. and he very much pushed that. and also pushed the dream act which grants instate tuition to undocumented immigrants. that's the first time the dream act has been approved. he also won expansion of gambling whether you like that or oppose that. he put a lot of chips on that so to speak and that came through for him. and maryland picked up the congressional seat at the republicans expense largely because jerry mandered the redistricting map. in order to swipe a seat from the republicans in western maryland and northern montgomery county. across the river, mcdonald had a very bad day. he failed to deliver virginia, a crucial battleground state at the national level either for the

romney in the presidential race or in the closely watched senate race. the george allen came up short against tim kaine. the republicans won the last three off year elections three years in a row under mcdonald's leadership. but came up short big time on tuesday. >> i guess my question is how much cloud does the governor have over the people of that state? we looked at maryland, heavily democratic. virginia was the swing state. how much clout does the head man have? >> omalley had more to do with the victories than mcdonald had to do with the losses for his team in virginia. i think romney was not ana tracktive candidate in a presidential year in virginia when the electorate is different than off year.

a lot of minorities come out to vote who don't vote in the off year election. more democratic, liberal or moderate in virginia than it is the rest of the time. and he could not counteract that. the republicans were hoping he could. he won -- the thing is mcdonald led the republican party to three major victories. 09, 10 and 11 in virginia. it did not translate at all in the presidential year. and he had put a lot into this. >> what exactly did he do? >> he endorsed romney and allen early in the process. these were his candidates. the guys he had supported early on. he put his organization. he had a pretty strong political organization in virginia working on their behalf. so he was quite committed to these guys

and it didn't work. i will say another thing mcdonald he has not -- to succeed in the presidential years, the republican party needs to move more on the center. two straight years where it's been pretty good for the democrats in the presidential year and mcdonald is conservative himself but also his freedom to maneuver and move the republican party to the center is hampered because even more conservative people are in control in the general assembly. that hammers him as well. >> which was my question what needs to happen now. all right robert thank you so much for joining us. and we'll be right back. billion on their network. that's like building 4 nat's stadiums, 5 wilson bridges, and 8 dc convention centers...all in one year. and not a penny of it comes from taxpayers.

>> just hanging out. >> you all didn't name it romney. this is a specific breed of sheep. >> originally from england. and these sheep over on the right are tuna sheep. they are a medium breed and one of america's oldest breeds from the 1700s. >> when you talk about doing breed specific wool, tell me exactly like what that means and why you said we're one of the only people that are doing this. >> this is true. it's just like tomato es or apples. sheep grow different types of wool. you have different varieties and they do different things. you can see it's a little bit softer. it's a medium wool and makes a nice bouncy yarn. this is the romney fleece and it has luster and it's longer wool. and this is the karakle fleece. has double coated and a long

outer coat and a short under down. >> so you sheer the sheep. and this eventually become s yarn? >> yes. >> and this is super strong. it's originally used for rugs but it's a great felting wool. >> when you say breed specific, you are saying we're going to take the natural state of the wool, turning it into yarn and make things that work for that yarn. >> exactly. >> it's not just a matter and saying i like that colonel are. this is like hey i need to do a rug well then you should use this yarn. >> that's right. >> if you want a sweater, this is just great. >> this is the romney yarn. this is the way it comes back to us from the mills after we design it. >> so from sheep to shall so to speak, how long is that process?

going clean up efforts. also plunged parts of the northeast back into darkness. 60,000 people who just had electricity restored are now without heat and lights once again. the storm is on its way out but forecasters say there could be lingering rain and snow. >> the storm's impact can't even compare to sandy, it is taking toll on air travel. this is video from reagan national airport. you can see a few cancellations on the board. so far airlines have canceled 1300 flights into and out of the new york area since yesterday. >> really brutal. tucker is here to tell us what we can expect here. >> around here things are going to get better. the big coastal storm that impacted midatlantic, slowly pushing out to sea at the moment. things will gradually get better up and down the eastern sea board. not sure they'll be sun but it won't be snowing.

to professor from the earth science system. thanks for coming in. >> thank you. >> let's talk about sandy. i know that we cannot attribute anyone storm to global warming or climate change. but are you concerned about the warming of the ocean the melting of the ice cap ands that kind of thing and the affect it's beginning to have on our environment? >> the question now is really not whether each weather event is caused by global warming but the climates have warmed and the weather will form anyway but all forming in a much wetter climate. and the sea level is rising. especially in our region from north carolina to massachusetts. sea level rises accelerating at three times the rest of the green. gulf stream changes and so on. so the storm

surge will get worse with time. >> when you mention global warming or climate change particularly here in the united states and particularly here in washington, those terms have become politicized and people debate about is it caused by humans? should we be funding research into this. all that kind of thing. but what you just said, those are facts. the water is warming, the sea level is rising. >> yes. >> and so these weather events that would form anyway, how does that impae weather events? for example, could that contribute to a storm like sandy developing the way it developed? >> yes. from the fundamental level we know for sure we have increased greenhouse gasses which leads to increase in temperature. and with each degree warming we get about 7% increase in humidity and this comes from evaporation. even dry places are evaporating and

losing water and that is being supplied to wetter places. dry places becoming drier. with this, the rainfall goes up. and harder to rain in a wetter atmosphere. it rains only about 2% more and rains fewer times so you get much stronger rains. so it pours when it rains and the same goes into storms. when the storms form, they are much stronger and they are much stronger than before so even though the total number of hurricanes may not go up, we know for sure from science that category 4 and 5 hurricanes are going to go up in the coming years and decades. >> so the storms that develop will be stronger storms? >> much stronger storms. >> this is a short segment. we can do an 8 hour special on this but is there anything that we can do and i know this is where some of the debate comes from, i know many countries are beginning to try to control

their emission ands all that kind of thing, do we think that will have a positive impact or is it too little too late? >> it may not be too little too late yet. one is mitigation where we try to reduce the emissions. the other is adaptation. if we had some kind of a buffer or sea wall outside new york, could we have prevented the surge that got into the subway and so on? adaptation is priority right now for places that are more vulnerable. and mitigation is a longer term plan which includes engineering where you would have to sequester carbon somewhere. both are going forward. >> some politicians and others argue, look, the earth evolves overtime and would have occurred

anyway without human input. is that beside the point? even if it has nothing to do with what we are doing, is it something we still need to be worried about and try to do something about? >> yeah. we do know in the past climate had warmed when the dinosaurs were around. there was no ice in the arctic. but the fact is this is the most rapid warming in our history. and the evidences are multipled. sea levels are rising. temperatures rising. snow fall reducing. lakes are not freezing any more. frost days are fewer. seasons are changing. this is not something that we can attribute to natural change. it's definitely related to our activities. the question is how fast are things changing and who will really get harmed by all this? so we definitely have to deal with it. and there are a range of solutions that are being put forth. >> something we're going to be focusing on more and more in the

days, weeks and months ahead. professor of atmospheric and ocean science. thank you for coming in. >> thank you. >> thank you so much. let's turn to our climatologist, tucker barnes. >> thank you. off to a cool start here across the area. cool day with temperatures in the low 50s. but by the end of the weekend a warmup expecting milder temperatures by sunday and monday. let's get started with a look at local temperatures. we've been dealing with the system off to our north and east. and temperatures right now in washington, 42 degrees. cold air. new york this morning 35 degrees and 35 in boston as well. very chilly temperatures out there. looking at the satellite radar, i can show you the storm system around here. we're done with it. we did have

a few showers and snowflakes during the nighttime hours. those are out of here. pushing off to the north and east. very impressive sight. i think i mentioned 4 inches at jfk. newark 6 inches. so our trend will be more sunshine. cool temperatures and a breeze this afternoon with highs in the low 50s. there's your warming trend for the end of the weekend. by sunday and monday, mid 60s around here. that's closer to where we should be. average daytime high is in the low 60s. haven't done that all month. and looks like we'll get that warmup we've been looking for by the end of the weekend here. that's a look at weather more coming up in a minute. let's do some traffic. >> all right. leaving you with big delays right now for those continuing along 95 and 295

perspective here. it's hard to understand and to grasp. we wish we could show the viewer what i just saw. micro sculptor. what are the tools that you work with to create these work of art? >> i use broken shards of diamond. sharpening fine drills. i use diamonds which looks like bee stings and i glue them on the end of a wire and use a little jackhammer. i work very late at night to avoid vibration. it's painstaking work. i don't enjoy doing it but i enjoy finishing it. >> the first one i saw was that the white house? >> that's correct. >> the entire white house on the head of a needle there. how long does it take you? >> 6 weeks to do.

sometimes less. sometimes 8 weeks. you are looking at something which is smaller than a period. all the windows detailed. what are we looking at here? i couldn't show you what i was looking at. but what's the perspective there? >> it's probably about i would say 20 microms or something. >> that's the obama family. they are in a small needle. unbelievable. i think i recognize that dress the first lady has on. >> there's a lot more detail than that. it's difficult to photograph them. there's more detail. >> could we see another one? then you can really see. unbelievable. that is on the head of a pin. >> the queen of england asked me to deliver of it. >> you have been honored by the queen.

name would become. the greatest that ever lived. it was this encouragement that just sort of came out of me. i was inspired. so i sort of took that on board and i was inspired by him and i came what i came. a lot of kids out there that have learning difficulties and disabilities and whatever. i can be an inspiration to them. >> you can indeed. your story the documented and perhaps it's harder to even really talk about it. you are talking about instructors not nice at all. you went to this other place and you began this phenomenal career. and look at you. that is an inspiration. >> my teacher told me i was a consequence of failure. but my mother told me small things are going to make the biggest impact and that's what i did. the whole world knows about me now and i'm getting smaller.

8:46. and this morning we are learning more about romney. not governor romney. you might be surprised to know romney is a breed of sheep. >> that's right. some local business women are putting them to good use when it comes to the fiber arts. holly morris has more from red gate farm in leesburg, virginia. >> reporter: good morning. we've done a lot of farm to table. everybody wants to eat their food locally. well, why not get your yarn locally as well especially if you are a knitter. even if you are not, you can buy a sweater. these are the brilliant minds. thank you for letting us be out here. we're learning about the process. one of the things is you have the wool on the sheep and then it gets sheared and comes in this fleece. they do live outside. >> they do live outside and they do get dirty. the first time i brought home a dirty

fleece and hardly wait to see how it looked clean. you plunge them into cold water. look at the dirt that comes out immediately. after a day i will put this in hot water. the point i want to get across is don't be afraid to wash wool. wool washes beautifully. >> you were saying that's why the rain is so good because it cleans their wool. >> that's right. >> one of the big things that's so special is the fact that it's all local. we want to talk about these local sheep and what it can turn into. let's start here. >> these are from my farm. and they are mostly rug yarn or very

course yarn for outer garments. and this is a sample of what the yarn looks like. >> this is the natural color? >> yeah. >> and there's no karakle that comes in this color. >> i'm just in charge of the washing. she's in charge of the dying. >> that's why they make a great team. how do you go about the dying process? >> you can do dying in every stage after it's off the sheep. you can die the fleece. this is fleece that's been died. and then it gets blended when it's carted and spun. >> this looks like something lady gaga would wear. >> i'm sure she appreciates natural fibers. >> you can also die the yarn. >> so i die yarn in three different ways. two of them in pots. with wool you need heat. all of these yarns have been died or hand paints like this.

>> she knows her yarn. it starts like this. and this would be the finish product. >> these are the natural colors. >> what is romney good for? >> it's good for outer wear. you can use it for scarves, hats, sweaters. traditionally fabric. >> this is a hand paint. so those are laid out and you're basically making a canvas of yarn. and hand painting it. and it's not all in different places like this. you are not doing it straned by strand. . >> as you are explaining this, this is a labor of love. so why did you guys do this? other than your for

fiber arts. >> we love wool and we love sheep and we love doing it. but also lots of local small farms who don't necessarily have the fiber skills to create a value product don't know what to do with their wool. so we are able to buy fleeces from them at a much higher price than they could sell other places. we try to pay fair prices. >> you can create fair prices that you are not going to get at the box store which then makes the knitter be able to knit something. it's a win, win, win, win process. we have a link to solitude wool. they do sell it like the sheep and wool festival and at the farmer's market on sundays. they have them all listed on their web site. or you can get them at a new knitting shop on capitol hill. we're going to take you there coming up in our next
