9:03 am
including the debt ceiling. what's in the approved deal and what issues still lie ahead? melanie is live with the latest. good morning, melanie. >> reporter: good morning, tony. we have avoided tax hikes income tax hikes for the vast majority of americans. but that means less money coming in for deficit reduction and also those big spending cuts that was supposed to go to deficit reduction. they have been pushed off. that sets up a very big budget battle. it was literally the 11th hour last night when house speaker john boehner finally put the senate plan up for a vote with mostly democrat support. republicans voted against it almost 2 to 1. house republicans were mad there were no spending cuts in the spending bill and no faith those cuts will materialize as promised. the sequestration we've heard so much about, those were delayed for two months.
9:04 am
the result of congress's inability for deficit reduction measures. that was just five months ago. and now, this bitterly divided congress will have to figure out where to take the money from. >> what i cannot promise is it will be done quickly and easily. it's going to require a whole new set of decisions. we don't want to kick the can down the road. don't want to lift sequestration and lose the benefit of the deficit reduction. sequestration is a bad idea. across the board arbitrary cuts. what we need to do is replace the cuts with the similar amount of deficit reduction. >> right about the same time that congress must vote on weather again increase the debt ceiling or risk default. telling folks on capitol hill he has begun to

9:06 am
payroll tax hike. now it goes up to 6.2%. here's what this means. a household earning $50,000 a year will see paychecks cut by $1,000. for workers making $110,000 a year which is the maximum wage subject to the payroll tax, that's $2200 less that will be coming home. numerous financial analysts say this could be a big hit to the economy. they add that it is likely a surprise to many americans who had mostly heard about income tax rates during all the fiscal cliff talk. now, there is some good news to share with you this morning. the fiscal cliff bill includes a farm provision that prevents milk prices from doubling. the bill also cancels a $900 raise members of congress were set to get in march. the taxes taken out of your paycheck will go up. it's a social
9:07 am
security payroll tax. not the income tax. we still have a lot of debate coming up in february as well with the debt ceiling. this is far from over. >> no escaping it. >> no. >> thanks, sarah. one thing the house did not vote on was aid for super storm sandy recovery. leaving law makers from both parties angered. approved $60 billion in aid. a house committee designed a $27 billion measure and expected to vote on it before congress's term ended. no word on if the house will vote on it by then. >> and days after dealing with the fiscal cliff negotiations, president obama heads back to hawaii to finish his vacation. left andrew's air force base last night. >> the president was forced to return to the white house last week for fiscal cliff talks.

9:14 am
2012 was a challenging year for many who lost their job or those re-entering the job market or job seekers looking for a new career. as the nation's unemployment rates falls companies are hiring but the competition remains fierce. how do you set yourself and the resume apart from the others out there? laura is the founder of the based career strategy group. she is here to offer important tips. i mean all important tips for landing the job that you want. >> yes, exactly. >> you can perhaps land a job. it's tough. but the job you really want. good morning and happy new year. >> same to you. >> first of all, this is the
9:15 am
book you co-authored. 100 conversations for career success. >> the first thing you need to start doing is taking an inventory of who you are and what you want to do. the biggest mistake job seekers make is they get laid off or they start sending their resume out to a merit of places and don't take time to look at it or figure out what it is they want to do. a resume needs to be targeted. very important they take inventory of what they've done and what value they bring to the employer. >> in this online world, like a piece of paper with your credentials on it seems old-fashioned but it is still your calling card. >> it is your calling card. a resume is very important. it's one of the most important tools that you have in your job search. it's probably the most important one. there are other things as well.
9:16 am
it needs to be up to date and have a photo. i can't tell you how many people whose profile was out. >> i thought you were going to say did you know you don't have a photo on your linked in. i don't. i'm learning something too. what about that resume? can we still go with a traditional resume? what do we need to do within the subtitle there? >> the first thing to do on our resume is make sure you know what job you are looking for. do not take all of your job experience and plummet everything you've done. the first thing is a job title. what job are you looking for? recruiters want to have easy access to what it is you can do for them. right across the top in bold the job you are looking for and a career summary. less
9:17 am
about the old objective. the old objective was about me. >> the one line under. >> that's been replaced by the career summary. all about the employer. what can i do for the employer. taking stock of what you've done and essentially it's summarizing it in this career summary piece and serving it so you are able to say here's the value i can provide for you. >> what are the mistakes we make? >> not having a targeted resume. not looking through your resume and figuring out what job you'd be good for. and also putting everything you've done on your resume is a big mistake. you may be going for a job as a television produce or a television afrpg or but you have done some other jobs in your career and been scattered throughout your career. you need to find a way to minimize
9:18 am
those experiences and maximize and put front and center on the first page in the prime real estate what it is you want to do. so you don't want to take everything you've done and throw it on your resume. you want to be thoughtful and have a strategy for how you target to the job you want. >> also talk about your online brand. tell us more about that. the internet is just everywhere now. you walk down the street and people are looking at their phone and can be looking at you if they are potential employers. one thing that's important for job seekers to know is what's out there about them is called their online brand. and their online brand gets to the interview before they do. so they need to make sure they are out in front of it. and managing it. the first thing they need to do is google themselves. if they find nothing, they have some work to do. they need to start building that portfolio of information. if they find a brand that goes
9:19 am
maybe not clean. has a little bit of this and that, they need to start minimizing things on the google results and start pushing to the top the ones they want to see. first thing first, linked in. it's a high authority web site according to google. what you put on linked in will show up higher in your google results. >> last but not least and we want to get to it is networking is still valuable. get out there and meet some people. >> yes, it's the most important thing. it's the most important thing in a job search. and a lot of things job seekers do is considered networking. it's important they focus on meeting people within their target companies. they need to make a list of target companies to go after and that's who they should try to be networking with. >> it's a full-time job to get a job. >> yes, it is. >> this is laura labovich,
