along the 3500 block of 14th street in northwest. this happened before 3:00 in the morning. officials say a woman was stabbed in the neck and taken to the hospital. no word on any suspects nor a motive. also the search is on for a man who assaulted a teenager as she walked to her bus stop. this happened yesterday morning near hickory drive in fort washington. police say the victim was able to kick her attacker and get away. if you have information, you are asked to give them a call. take a moment to look at your screen now. this is an updated sketch of the man who tried to kidnap a 13-year-old girl. this happened wednesday morning as that girl was walking to school in the 10000 block of blake lane. the girl was able to get away, fortunately. if you have information, you're asked to call the sheriff's office there. a former d.c. police officer has been found guilty of murder after less than two hours of deliberation by a

jury. richmond phillips showed no visible sign of emotion as the judge read guilty to all seven charges against him. he shot and killed his former girlfriend and then left their 11-month-old daughter to suffocate in a hot car. prosecutors say phillips killed wright over a paternity test for their daughter. he denied being her father. the defense decided not to present any of their evidence, sending the trial to closing arguments yesterday. the verdict leaves many relieved. >> he's a devil. that's all i can say. he's the devil. he's the devil. anyone can do something like that just doesn't have a heart. >> ever case is significant to us. but there is something unspeakable about quilling a child. this case struck a chord with all of us. >> a key piece of evidence was a video showing phillips holding a gun they say he used to shoot wright in a hill crest heights park.

prosecutors are seeking life in prison without the possibility of parole. he'll be sentenced in march. allison? checking our other top stories now, we will learn more today about the gun reform maryland's governor plans to pursue. the governor will outline his public safety priorities at a news conference this hour. he says he'll seek a ban on assault weapons, increase background checks as well as address mental health and school safety. in the meantime, d.c.'s mayor says he is open to the idea of armed guards at schools. the nra has proposed the move. d.c. council's chair, mendleson, agrees with the mayor. mendleson says the response to gun violence is not to have more guns. d.c. public school chancer henderson has released the list of 15 schools that will be closing as part of the consolidation plan. 13 will close at the end of

this year. the other two at the end of next year. our wisdom martin joins us with more on this story. means a lot to a lot of people. >> you're right, allison. a lot of people were protesting over this, and even with the protests outside mayor gray's house earlier this week, there was no stopping many of the school closings. chancellor henderson announced friday she'd start the process soon. but here's the thing, malcolm x elementary was saved and so was garrison in logan circle. some of the students will be transferred to nearby schools. others will be bused. when it comes to the school buildings themselves, the hope is to turn some into recreation centers or community centers. what about more school closures in the future? >> ultimately we're paying too much and offering too little. we'll be able to expand opportunities at some of our most sought after schools in the district. >> another school that will not close is johnson middle school.

the chancellor says she didn't close that because of safety. her explanation was, there was concern if you moved students from that school to other schools, it could cause problems because of the gang differences and the other beefs between the schools. she says at this point she hopes not to have to close anymore schools. and we want to tell you the list of school closings is on our web site, myfoxdc.com. tony? wisdom, thank you very much. we are following new developments in the ongoing hostage crisis in algeria. state media there says about 60 hostages are unaccounted for. this, after a botched raid by algerian forces yesterday in an attempt to free the hostages. some did escape, including we're told five americans. but the fate of other u.s. citizens is still unknown. other media in north africa reporting the kidnappers want to swap two remaining americans for terror suspects who are

currently in jail. four u.s. officials are in japan this morning to help investigate a 787 that made an emergency landing earlier this week. the boeing fleet has been grounded world wide after a series of incidents including battery problems. we continue to follow the preparations for the 57th presidential inauguration. >> from security measures to celebrations, it is crunch time for all the officials involved in planning the events. our own sherri ly has more from the d.c. armory, where help will be arriving later this morning. sherri? >> reporter: you know, it takes a tremendous amount of manpower to put on the presidential inauguration. in just about an hour from now we're expecting a huge influx here at the d.c. armory. they're going to be welcoming about 6,000 national guard troops from more than 25 states and territories. they'll be mobilizing here for the event.

some are coming from puerto rico and virgin islands. they'll be helping with traffic, crowd control and logistics among other things. another 2,000 troops outside the city will be on alert for the inauguration. it's part of the preparations for four days of events. many people will be using metro to get around. the agency is now selling a special one-day pass that costs $15. the card features president obama on it, and is being sold at nine metro stations. the transit agency expects about 600 to 800,000 people will use metro for the inauguration. tickets to the official events are also a hot commodity. ebay and craigslist have promised to crack down on scalpers trying to sell them for thousands online. senator schumer got complaints from his constituents. people from all over the country are here in d.c. to see

back now with a disgraced champion's confession. former cyclist lance armstrong admits to using performance- enhancing drugs in a candid interview with oprah winfrey that aired last night. armstrong says without the help of doping, he couldn't have won seven straight tour de frances. he says the admission goes far deeper than a tainted career. >> i made my decisions, they are my mistake and i am sitting here today to acknowledge that. i'll spend the rest of my life trying to earn back trust and apologize to people for the rest of my life. >> armstrong has been stripped of all of his titles, stripd of

you could use a micro fiber cloth. >> oh. >> it acts like -- >> look at that. >> it acts like a lint brush. >> yeah. >> this is really the best way. >> you wash that like a normal cloth? >> you do. you must be careful, because it collects things. micro fiber cloths collect and hold. you wash this with things that do not give off lint. otherwise, it will collect the lint. >> there are things that don't give off lint? too many questions. can we buy one of those handy heloise cloths? >> not the ones that say heloise. they're fabulous in big box stores. you need one. i'm trying not to clean it. >> they tell me this is to prevent the glare. that's what they tell me. i don't know. >> i've cleaned the spots for you. >> the second question comes from carol. we wash our linens regularly,

will you the lint traps always gets full. when do fabrics stop shedding, if ever? >> it agains on the fabric. when she says linens, if the sheets and pillowcases shed like that, they're going to continue to shed. it depends on how it's actually made. if they're made a certain way, it's one piece of thread. many times they're little fibers. you'll see this. it is going to continue to shed. this is nothing you can do for linens. now, if you have -- i did something in good housekeeping and it was a similar question. a woman had a jacket she loved. it's going to shed. i said you know what you can try, because i've done it, is the fabric spray that is used to waterproof fabrics, that you buy at the sporting goods store -- >> sure. >> -- it puts a fine layer on there, and that might help it prevent shedding. but you can't do that on bed

welcome back. last week we told you about the king of conga's battle. the king won $2,000 and a new set of congas. we are happy this morning to welcome samuel smoke here with his band. congratulations. good morning, everybody. glad to have you here. we've been hearing you through the walls here. you sound great, fantastic. you're the first ever winner. it was a first time competition. remind everybody how many did you take on in this competition, and defeat? >> actually it was 32 conga players. and i came out on top of all the 32. >> so you must be thrilled? >> i'm very thrilled. >> tell me what the whole experience was like, because it was the first time. your first time with this kind of competition. what was it like doing it, what was the crowd response? >> well, it was actually a very good show. that's why i want to thank nikko and heartbeat and fly source, and go go radio for throwing the show at first.

and it was a good show all around. it was all around good show. the competition was very strong. it was a lot of surprises out of that. >> we have some clips here from the show last week. this is something that will go on now i think year after year after year. it's a competition. but i would imagine most of the bands and conga players are friends, right? >> yeah. >> it's like a family, the go go community. >> we all know where we came from. >> tell us where you came from, how long you've been playing. >> i've been playing over 20 years. i started like in '88 and i first played with a band called legacy. we came out, and then i started playing with familiar faces and now i'm with da mixx. >> you played with a drummer. can you demonstrate a little bit of what you did? >> sure.
